When a fixed deposit (FD) reaches its maturity date, the bank follows the instruction and contract attached to that deposit. It may transfer the proceeds to a linked account, renew the principal, renew the principal plus interest, or leave the money as an overdue deposit under a different interest rule. If you close the FD before maturity, the bank may recalculate interest for the actual holding period and deduct a disclosed penalty. The exact result depends on your country, bank, product, maturity instruction and deposit terms.
What can happen on the maturity date?
Maturity is the end of the agreed deposit term, not a guarantee of one universal payout. Your deposit receipt, application, renewal mandate or account agreement should identify what the bank will do. Check those documents before assuming that the money will arrive in your savings account or that it will continue earning the original FD rate.

| Maturity instruction or situation | What generally happens | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Payout to a linked account | The bank closes the FD and credits principal and any interest due to the nominated savings or current account. | Credit date, tax withholding, and whether the mandate includes interest as well as principal. |
| Renew principal only | The original principal starts a new FD; accrued interest is paid out to the linked account. | Amount renewed, new tenure, new rate, and destination of interest. |
| Renew principal plus interest | The maturity proceeds are combined and placed into a new FD. | Whether interest is actually compounded into the new deposit and the new maturity date. |
| No instruction or unpaid proceeds | The balance may become an overdue or matured-but-unpaid deposit. Its return can be lower than the original FD rate. | Overdue interest rule, any bank contact requirement, and whether renewal is still permitted. |
| Deposit pledged for borrowing | A lien or overdraft agreement may restrict payout or renewal until the secured borrowing is dealt with. | Lien status, set-off rights, outstanding balance, and the bank’s written maturity procedure. |
These are common outcomes, not a promise about every bank. A maturity mandate can be changed only within the window and by the method allowed in your agreement. Some institutions require an instruction before maturity; others provide a post-maturity grace period.

The interest rate can reset
An auto-renewed FD is normally a new contract. The rate that applied when you opened the original deposit does not necessarily carry forward. In one published Indian bank example, an enabled auto-renewal uses the rate prevailing on the maturity date for the original tenure. That is a bank-specific term, not a market-wide rule. Before renewal, confirm the rate shown for the new deposit rather than relying on an old receipt or a previous promotional rate.

The term and maturity date start again
Renewal starts a new clock. A one-year FD that renews on its maturity date generally receives a new maturity date one year later, but the term may differ if your mandate or the bank’s product rules specify another period. Record the new date immediately; an automatic renewal can otherwise pass unnoticed and make later access subject to another early-closure calculation.
Principal-only and principal-plus-interest renewal are different
With principal-only renewal, interest is paid out and only the original principal is locked again. With principal-plus-interest renewal, the interest is added to the amount of the new FD. The second option can produce a larger maturity amount because more money is deposited, but it also leaves less cash available outside the lock-in. Verify which option your mandate selected and whether the bank treats unpaid interest separately.
Renewal does not always mean the same tenure or product
A bank may renew for the original tenure, a default tenure stated in its terms, or another period selected in your instruction. Senior-citizen rates, callable or non-callable features, payout frequency and minimum-deposit rules can also change. Ask for a fresh advice or confirmation showing the amount, rate, tenure, interest treatment and next maturity date.

If you do nothing after maturity
India: the overdue balance may earn less
The Reserve Bank of India’s 2025 FAQ states that, for an unpaid matured domestic term deposit, the balance earns the lower of the applicable savings-account rate and the contracted term-deposit rate. In practical terms, an FD that has matured but has not been paid or renewed should not automatically be assumed to keep earning its original FD rate.
RBI guidance also says individual banks set transparent, notified policies for overdue deposits. The RBI FAQ describes a discretionary case in which renewal may be allowed when the overdue period is no more than 14 days, subject to the bank’s stated conditions. Fourteen days is not a universal grace period: a bank may impose different conditions, require a request, or treat a longer overdue period as a fresh term deposit under applicable rules. Ask the bank what rate and tenure will apply before accepting a renewal.
United States: disclosure rules are different
For US time accounts, Regulation DD requires the institution to disclose whether the account automatically renews at maturity. If it does, the disclosure must state whether a grace period is available and how long it lasts. If it does not automatically renew, the institution must state whether interest is paid after maturity when the account is not renewed. These are disclosure requirements; the account agreement still determines the actual rate, notice period, withdrawal rules and grace-window procedure.

What happens if you withdraw before maturity?
First, confirm that early closure is allowed
Some fixed deposits permit premature closure; others restrict it, especially deposits with special features or a non-callable designation. The receipt or terms should state whether you can close early, whether partial withdrawal is available, and how a request must be made. Do not assume that a bank must release the money simply because you ask.
Interest is usually recalculated for the actual holding period
The RBI’s published deposit direction states: “While prematurely closing a deposit, interest on the deposit for the period that it has remained with the bank will be paid at the rate applicable for the period for which the deposit remained with the bank and not at the contracted rate.” This means the bank can replace the original contracted rate with the rate applicable to the period the money actually stayed on deposit. The relevant rate may be lower than the rate printed on your original advice.
A disclosed penalty may be deducted
In India, RBI permits banks to levy a premature-withdrawal penalty under a board-approved comprehensive policy. The penalty component should be disclosed when the deposit is accepted, and the bank should make its penal-interest policy known to depositors. The exact deduction is therefore bank- and product-specific. Check the current schedule rather than estimating from another FD.

There may be a minimum holding period with no interest
RBI guidance says no interest is payable if the deposit is withdrawn before the prescribed minimum period. The minimum period and the product’s eligibility rules must be read from the current terms. If interest was already credited periodically, the bank may adjust or recover the excess when it closes the deposit.
How to obtain the actual early-closure amount
- Find the deposit number, principal, opening date, contractual maturity date and interest-payout option.
- Ask the bank for the rate applicable to the actual completed period, not merely the original FD rate.
- Ask for the penalty percentage or amount and whether it is applied to the rate, interest, principal or another base under the contract.
- Confirm adjustments for interest already paid, taxes, liens or outstanding charges.
- Request a written closure quote with the net amount and its validity date; rates and policies can change.
Without these details, an online FD calculator can show only a theoretical figure. It cannot know your bank’s penalty, minimum period, prior interest credits or lien status.

| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What rate and tenure apply on the new FD? | Renewal can reset both the return and the time your money is locked. |
| Does the bank renew principal, interest, or both? | The choice changes the amount reinvested and the cash you receive now. |
| When can you change the instruction? | A grace window may let you redirect funds without treating the action as an early closure, but the length and conditions are contract-specific. |
| What happens if the proceeds remain unpaid? | Overdue funds may earn a savings rate or another lower rate instead of the FD rate. |
| What would early closure cost later? | A new FD can have a different penalty, minimum period or withdrawal restriction from the old one. |
| Do you need the cash for a known expense? | Renewing locks the money again; taking the payout avoids a later premature-closure request. |
There is no universal best choice. A renewal can preserve a predictable deposit structure, while a payout can preserve access and let you compare current products. Base the decision on the new written terms and your expected cash requirement.

Overdue interest
For a domestic term deposit that has matured and remains unpaid, RBI’s 2025 FAQ uses the lower of the applicable savings-account rate and the contracted term-deposit rate. The rule concerns the unpaid matured proceeds; it does not mean every bank must automatically renew the deposit.
Premature-withdrawal policy
RBI allows a bank’s board-approved policy to set a penalty, provided the relevant penalty components are disclosed. The applicable interest is tied to the period actually completed, and no interest is payable before the prescribed minimum period. Because directions and bank schedules can be amended, use the latest RBI material and your bank’s current terms when making a decision.

Overdue renewal timing
RBI describes a discretionary renewal situation for an overdue period of no more than 14 days, subject to stated conditions. Beyond that, the bank may treat the transaction as a fresh term deposit under the applicable rules. Do not treat 14 days as an automatic entitlement or assume the original rate will be restored.
Special case: an FD linked to an overdraft or other borrowing
A fixed deposit that secures an overdraft is not an ordinary maturity payout. The bank may have a lien over the deposit and contractual rights to apply proceeds against the borrowing. Whether it renews the FD, releases surplus funds, or first requires repayment depends on the loan and deposit agreements. Before the maturity date, ask for the outstanding overdraft balance, the lien amount, the interest rate after maturity, and the exact steps for release or renewal. A public discussion or informal answer cannot establish the rule for your account.
A practical maturity checklist
- Mark the maturity date and the final date on which your bank accepts a change to the instruction.
- Read the deposit receipt and the latest terms for payout, renewal, overdue interest, grace period and early closure.
- Confirm the destination account is active and correctly linked.
- Ask for the maturity amount and, if renewal is proposed, a fresh quote showing rate, tenure, amount renewed and next maturity date.
- Check whether the deposit is pledged, jointly held or subject to any instruction that limits payout.
- If you may need the money soon, obtain the bank’s early-closure calculation before renewing.
- Save the confirmation, new receipt and transaction reference after the bank processes your instruction.
Questions to ask the bank
- What is my exact maturity date and maturity amount?
- Is the FD set to pay out, renew principal only, or renew principal plus interest?
- What rate and tenure will apply if it renews on the maturity date?
- Is there a grace period, how long is it, and how must I submit a change?
- What rate applies if the proceeds remain unpaid?
- Can I close early, and what rate, penalty and prior-interest adjustment will apply?
- Is any lien, overdraft or other restriction attached to the deposit?
Bottom line
Maturity ends the original FD contract; it does not guarantee automatic payout, automatic renewal or the original interest rate. Read the maturity instruction, verify the new rate before any renewal, and treat an unpaid balance as a separate interest situation. In India, RBI guidance links premature-closure interest to the actual holding period, permits disclosed penalties and applies a lower-of-savings-or-contracted-rate rule to unpaid matured domestic term deposits. US time-account customers should use the Regulation DD disclosures and their account agreement to determine automatic renewal and grace-period terms. For an FD tied to an overdraft, obtain the bank’s written lien and repayment procedure before maturity.
