What Happens to a Fixed Deposit When It Matures and Is Not Renewed?

When a fixed deposit (FD) matures, the bank follows the maturity instruction recorded for that deposit. If the instruction is to close it, the principal and interest are normally paid to the designated linked account. If renewal is selected, the deposit may roll over—usually at the rate available on the maturity date, not the old rate. If instructions are missing, the account may be marked overdue or renewed automatically, depending on the bank and jurisdiction. There is no universal default, so check the instruction on your own FD and the bank’s current terms before the maturity date.

What can happen on the maturity date?

A fixed deposit does not have one outcome that applies at every bank. The result depends on the maturity instruction, the product’s terms and, in some cases, whether the linked payout account is still open.

Maturity instruction or status What generally happens Interest-rate treatment
Close and pay proceeds The bank closes the FD and transfers principal and interest to the designated savings or current account. The original contracted rate applies through the agreed term, subject to the bank’s tax and product rules.
Renew principal and interest The entire maturity amount is placed into a new FD, normally for the selected or original tenure. The renewed FD uses the rate prevailing on the renewal date; the original rate does not automatically continue.
Renew principal only The principal starts a new FD while the interest is paid to the designated account. The new principal deposit earns the rate available on the renewal date.
No instruction The bank may treat the deposit as overdue or apply an automatic-renewal default, according to its terms. The treatment of the period after maturity depends on the bank and applicable regulation.

“Not renewed” can therefore mean two different things: you expressly chose payout, or the deposit reached maturity without a valid renewal instruction. Those cases may be processed differently. A maturity advice, online-banking screen or account-opening form should show which instruction is recorded.

How Indian bank terms illustrate the outcomes

ICICI Bank: auto-renewal or payout to a designated account

ICICI Bank’s terms for resident and non-resident deposit accounts say that auto-renewal may be selected when the FD is opened. Where it is enabled, the principal, or the principal plus interest, renews for the original tenure at the rate prevailing on the maturity date. If no instruction is given, the bank’s terms describe the deposit as overdue. Unless auto-renewal applies, maturity proceeds go to the designated savings or current account.

Its consumer FAQ describes the practical outcome when no maturity instruction is provided and auto-renewal is not enabled: the FD closes and the proceeds are credited to the linked account. The FAQ says this credit is typically made on the maturity date and that instructions can be changed before maturity. These are ICICI procedures, not a promise that every Indian bank uses the same workflow. A particular FD variant’s terms can take precedence over general deposit terms.

Indian Bank: three distinct instructions

Indian Bank publishes three choices that make the distinction especially clear:

  • Option A: renew principal and interest after applicable tax deduction at source (TDS).
  • Option T: close the FD and transfer principal and interest, after applicable TDS, to the customer’s account.
  • Option P: renew the principal and credit the interest, after applicable TDS, to the customer’s account.

An FD set to Option P is partly renewed even though the interest is not reinvested. Calling every non-payout outcome “full renewal” can therefore give the wrong impression about what happens to the interest.

What “overdue” means for an Indian FD

An FD that has passed its maturity date without being paid out or validly renewed may be recorded as overdue. Overdue status is not the same as a guaranteed grace period during which the old FD rate continues.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) states that a bank may, at its discretion, renew an overdue deposit or part of it when the period from maturity to renewal, counting both dates, does not exceed 14 days. The rate on the amount renewed is the appropriate rate for the renewal period prevailing on the date of maturity. RBI’s wording is deliberately conditional:

“A bank may, at its discretion, renew an overdue deposit or a portion thereof provided the overdue period from the date of maturity till the date of renewal (both days inclusive) does not exceed 14 days and the rate of interest payable on the amount of the deposit so renewed shall be the appropriate rate of interest for the period of renewal as prevailing on the date of maturity.”

Fourteen days is a condition on the bank’s discretion, not an automatic customer entitlement. The bank can require a fresh instruction or documentation even within that period.

When the overdue period exceeds 14 days, RBI says that if the depositor places the overdue amount, or part of it, as a fresh term deposit, the bank may set its own rate for the overdue period. Do not assume that the original FD rate will be backdated, that the amount will be renewed automatically, or that no interest will be paid. Ask the bank to state the deposit’s status, the value date used and the rate applied.

Where the maturity money is paid

For a payout instruction, the destination is usually the savings or current account designated when the FD was opened. Verify that the account is still open, correctly linked and held in the required name or names. Joint-account mandates, non-resident status and account-holder changes can affect whether a transfer is accepted.

ICICI’s terms identify a designated savings or current account for maturity proceeds, and its FAQ says the amount is typically credited on the maturity date when payout applies. If a linked account has been closed, a bank may suspend the transfer, contact you for new instructions or apply a product-specific fallback. That is why checking the receiving account before maturity matters as much as checking the FD itself.

If the maturity date falls on a weekend or public holiday in India, the payment may occur on the next working day. The RBI rule on the intervening non-business period is addressed separately below; it does not mean that every later delay earns the contracted FD rate.

What rate applies if the deposit is renewed?

A renewal is generally a new pricing decision. ICICI says a renewed deposit earns the rate prevailing on the maturity date. DBS Singapore, discussed later as a jurisdiction-specific example, likewise refers to its prevailing rate. Consequently, a deposit opened when rates were high may renew at a lower rate, or vice versa.

Before allowing a full renewal, compare the new rate and tenure with your cash-flow needs. A longer tenure may lock money away when you need liquidity; a shorter tenure may produce a lower rate. Also check whether the bank renews only the principal or the combined principal and interest, because compounding and the final maturity amount differ.

Interest may be subject to TDS or other tax treatment. Indian Bank’s published choices expressly refer to renewal or payout after applicable TDS. The amount credited to you can therefore be lower than the gross interest shown in a maturity calculation. Review the bank’s tax statement and your own tax obligations rather than treating the credited amount as the pre-tax return.

What if maturity falls on a holiday in India?

For an Indian deposit whose term ends on a holiday, Sunday or other non-business day, RBI provides a specific rule for the intervening period. Its FAQ says:

“Banks should pay interest at the originally contracted rate on the deposit amount for the holiday/Sunday/Non-business working day intervening between the date of expiry of the specified term of the deposit and the date of payment of the proceeds of the deposits on the succeeding working day.”

This protects the intervening non-business day between expiry and payment on the succeeding working day. It is not a general promise that the old rate continues during a customer-caused delay, an overdue period lasting several days, or a deposit held outside India. The bank’s value date and holiday calendar should be confirmed if the amount is needed urgently.

Why a Singapore example can look different

Rules are jurisdiction-specific. DBS Singapore provides a useful contrast, not a universal rule for Indian deposits. Its maturity-instruction page says principal and interest renew automatically for the same tenor at the prevailing rate unless the depositor supplies different instructions at least one working day before maturity. It also says instructions cannot be changed on the maturity date itself.

DBS says matured proceeds are credited to the designated account under the payout instruction. If that designated account has been closed before or on maturity day, principal and interest renew for the same tenor at the prevailing rate at day end. This exception shows why an apparently simple “pay me at maturity” instruction can fail when the receiving account is no longer active. A bank in another country may use a different default, cutoff or fallback, so apply the rule of the bank and jurisdiction where your FD is held.

What to do before the maturity date

  1. Find the recorded instruction. Check the FD advice, mobile app or online-banking deposit details. Look specifically for wording such as renew principal and interest, renew principal only, or close and pay proceeds.
  2. Confirm the exact maturity date. Note whether the date falls on a weekend or holiday and ask how the bank calculates the succeeding working day.
  3. Check the amendment deadline. Some banks require instructions before maturity day; DBS Singapore, for example, requires at least one working day. Your bank may set a different cutoff, including an earlier time for branch or digital requests.
  4. Verify the payout account. Make sure the linked savings or current account is open, operational and held under the required ownership or mandate.
  5. Compare the choices. Calculate the amount available for spending, the amount that would be reinvested and the rate and tenure offered on renewal. Include any TDS in the cash-flow calculation.
  6. Submit and retain proof. Save the confirmation number, downloaded advice or branch acknowledgement showing the instruction and effective date.

If the FD has already matured

  1. Ask the bank whether the deposit is marked paid, overdue or renewed.
  2. Request the principal, gross interest, tax deducted, net credit, value date and any new FD number in writing.
  3. If it is overdue in India, ask whether the bank is applying the RBI treatment for renewal within 14 days or requiring a fresh term deposit.
  4. If the payout account is closed or inaccessible, provide the bank’s required replacement-account or mandate documents and ask when the transfer will be released.
  5. Do not sign a new renewal instruction until you know the rate, tenure and treatment of the days between maturity and the new placement.

Choosing payout, full renewal or principal-only renewal

Choice Useful when Questions to ask the bank
Payout of principal and interest You need the cash, want to move to another account or do not want to lock in the current renewal rate. Which account receives the funds, what is the value date, and what tax is deducted?
Full renewal You do not need the money and want the entire maturity amount to continue earning a term-deposit rate. What rate and tenure apply on the maturity date, and are both principal and interest being renewed?
Principal-only renewal You want to preserve the original capital in an FD while taking the interest as cash. When is the interest credited, what TDS applies, and what rate and tenure apply to the renewed principal?

Use the instruction that matches your cash requirement and tax position, not the option the bank happens to display first. If rates or personal plans are changing quickly, a shorter renewal can provide more flexibility, but the rate may differ from a longer term.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Assuming every bank pays automatically: confirm whether your FD has a payout instruction, an auto-renewal instruction or no instruction at all.
  • Expecting the old rate after renewal: ask for the prevailing maturity-date rate and the new tenure before accepting rollover.
  • Treating 14 days as a guaranteed grace period: RBI describes a bank’s discretion, not an automatic right to renewal.
  • Ignoring a closed linked account: update the receiving account before maturity and obtain written confirmation.
  • Changing instructions on maturity day: some banks reject same-day changes, so make the request before the stated cutoff.
  • Confusing gross and net interest: account for TDS and check the amount actually credited.
  • Applying an overseas rule to India: the Singapore example demonstrates why each bank’s terms and local regulation must be checked separately.

What to confirm in the bank’s terms

Before the FD matures, read the section headed maturity instructions, auto-renewal, overdue deposits or settlement of proceeds. Confirm the permitted instruction types, amendment cutoff, renewal tenure, applicable rate, tax handling, holiday payment rule and procedure when the linked account is closed. Product-specific terms can override a bank’s general FD conditions, so the terms attached to your particular deposit are the controlling document.
