When a minor named on an Indian demat account turns 18, the account does not follow one automatic, identical process at every provider. The new adult must contact the account’s registered depository participant (DP) or broker and complete that provider’s minor-to-adult procedure. Depending on the provider, this may mean opening a fresh individual demat account or converting the existing minor account. Ask about documents, transaction restrictions and treatment of existing holdings before relying on the account for trades.
The short answer: turning 18 starts an account-status process
A demat account held in a child’s name is a minor account. On the 18th birthday, the account holder becomes an adult and must update the account relationship with the provider. The change is administrative but important: the provider has to verify the adult client’s identity and account details under its own process before normal adult-account use can be confirmed.

There is no evidence of one universal workflow used by every Indian DP or broker. An NSDL circular describes communicating with the client and following an account-opening procedure for a fresh account if the client proceeds. By contrast, Zerodha’s current support guidance describes converting its minor account into an individual account. These are examples of provider-specific procedures, not a promise that every DP will use either route.
Do not assume that the account converts silently on the birthday, that the same account number will remain, or that transactions will be available immediately. Contact the provider before the birthday, obtain its current checklist, submit the required forms and wait for written or in-app confirmation that the adult status is active.

SEBI explains that investors receive depository services through a registered DP. The DP is the customer-facing intermediary for routine demat-account service; investors generally do not complete this change directly with NSDL or CDSL. See SEBI’s explanation of depositories and DPs and its securities-market investor guidance.
Why your DP or broker determines the exact outcome
India has two depositories, NSDL and CDSL, but your account is serviced through the DP or broker with which you opened it. That provider maintains your customer records, supplies forms and tells you whether the change is handled as a conversion or as a new adult account.
Provider instructions can differ because the operational steps, agreements and internal checks are not identical. A depository-level circular may describe a framework, while a broker’s support page may prescribe a particular workflow for its own systems. The safest interpretation is therefore: the 18th birthday creates a requirement to regularise the account with the existing provider, but the route and timing must be confirmed with that provider.

Two documented models: fresh account or conversion
Fresh adult account under an NSDL procedure
NSDL’s circular on a minor attaining majority describes communicating with the client and, if the client wishes to continue, following the account-opening procedure for a fresh demat account. That means the adult may be asked to complete a new account-opening form, agreement and associated identity checks rather than simply clicking an automatic “convert” option.
The circular is an NSDL procedural source. It should not be read as proof that every DP currently requires a brand-new account, nor as a guarantee that an old account identifier or holdings will be handled in one particular way. Ask your DP how it applies the procedure today. The circular is available at NSDL’s minor-to-major account guidance.

Conversion to an individual account
Some providers describe a direct conversion. Zerodha’s current support article says its minor account must be converted into an individual account when the holder turns 18 and lists the steps and documents it requires from its clients. Its process is useful as an example of what a provider checklist can look like, but its forms, timing and restrictions apply to Zerodha customers rather than to all DPs.
Read the provider’s latest instructions rather than relying on an old form, a friend’s experience or a generic search result. The relevant question to ask is: “Will you convert my existing minor account, or must I open a fresh individual demat account?”

Starting early reduces the chance that a birthday falls between submission, verification and activation. Use this sequence:
- Identify the servicing DP and broker. Check the account statement, welcome email, mobile app or contract note for the legal name and customer-service channel of the DP or broker connected to the minor account.
- Ask for the current minor-to-major checklist. Request the exact forms, agreements, submission method, acceptable documents and expected processing stages. Ask whether the provider calls the process “conversion,” “minor-to-major update” or “fresh account opening.”
- Confirm the effective date. Ask whether you may submit before the birthday, whether documents are accepted only after the holder is 18, and what event marks completion in the provider’s system.
- Ask about trading and demat restrictions. Find out whether buy, sell, transfer, pledge or other instructions will be blocked during processing, and whether the provider sends an alert when restrictions begin and end.
- Ask about the existing portfolio. Confirm whether securities stay in the same account, move to a new account, or require a separate transfer instruction. The reviewed guidance does not establish one holdings process for every provider, so obtain the answer in writing.
Keep a dated copy of every form, attachment, acknowledgement and support ticket. If the provider gives a reference number, save it with the submission date and the name of the channel used.
Documents and information the adult should verify
Exact requirements vary, so use the provider’s list as the controlling checklist. The documented procedures support checking the following categories:
Rank #3
- Identity and age: the adult’s identity details and proof that the account holder has reached majority, if the provider requests it.
- PAN and KYC data: confirm that the PAN, name, date of birth, address and other KYC fields match the provider’s records and current documents.
- Contact details: update the adult’s mobile number and email address so notices, one-time passwords and account alerts reach the account holder.
- Bank details: verify the linked bank account and provide any bank proof or confirmation the DP requires.
- Signature and declarations: complete the adult signature specimen, account-opening agreement, risk or investor declarations and other forms in the current format.
Do not send documents to an address found in an old blog post or an unsolicited message. Use the DP or broker’s authenticated website, app or support channel and check that the submission acknowledgement identifies your account.

Possibly, but a freeze is provider-specific. Zerodha states that its account is frozen during the conversion process. That does not establish a universal freeze duration or prove that every DP blocks the same transactions.
Ask four precise questions before placing an order:
- Which transactions, if any, are restricted while the status change is pending?
- Does the restriction begin on the birthday, when the provider receives the request, or at another stage?
- What event or message confirms that the restriction has been removed?
- Can an urgent corporate-action response, transfer or other instruction still be submitted during the restriction?
If the provider says the account is restricted, do not treat a temporary inability to trade as evidence that securities have disappeared. Request a statement showing the holdings and ask how they will be displayed after conversion or re-opening.
What happens to existing shares, funds and the account number?
The available guidance does not establish one holdings-transfer or account-number rule for all DPs. A provider may retain the existing relationship through conversion, or it may create a fresh adult account and explain how the securities are mapped or transferred. The answer can also depend on whether the broker and DP are the same organisation or separate entities.

Before signing, ask the provider to explain:
- whether the old minor account remains visible after the adult account is activated;
- whether the new account has a different client or demat identifier;
- how each existing security will appear in the post-change statement;
- whether any transfer instruction, delivery instruction or additional authorisation is required; and
- which statement should be retained for tax and record-keeping purposes.
After completion, download the first adult-account statement and compare its security names and quantities with the last minor-account statement. Report any discrepancy promptly through the provider’s official grievance channel.
Step-by-step process after the birthday
- Log in through the official provider channel. Look for an account-status notice or a minor-to-major workflow. If none appears, contact support and quote the minor account details through a secure channel.
- Choose the route offered by the provider. Complete either the conversion workflow or the fresh individual-account opening procedure. Do not submit both routes unless the provider instructs you to do so.
- Complete current KYC and account forms. Enter the adult’s legal name, PAN, date of birth, address, bank and contact details exactly as required. Upload clear, unexpired documents in the specified file format.
- Sign the new agreement or declarations. NSDL’s described fresh-account route includes following account-opening procedure and a new agreement; a conversion workflow may contain equivalent electronic agreements.
- Submit and record proof. Save the acknowledgement, application number, uploaded files and any payment or appointment receipt. Keep screenshots only as a backup; retain the provider’s formal acknowledgement.
- Respond to verification queries. If the DP rejects a document or requests a clarification, answer through the same authenticated case and check that the corrected document replaces the old one.
- Wait for activation confirmation. Obtain a message, statement or account screen showing that the adult account is active and usable. If the provider gave an expected timeline and it passes, follow up with the reference number.
- Check the portfolio and permissions. Review holdings, linked bank details, nominee or other profile fields shown by the provider, and confirm that the transaction functions you need are enabled.
How to compare instructions from different providers
If you are moving between brokers or evaluating a provider’s service, compare the operational points that affect your ability to use the account:
| Comparison point | NSDL circular example | Zerodha support example | What to ask your provider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Account route | Describes following account-opening procedure for a fresh account after majority. | Describes converting the minor account into an individual account. | Is this a fresh account or an in-place conversion? |
| Agreement and checks | Includes a new account-opening procedure and agreement. | Lists provider-specific conversion requirements and account steps. | Which current forms, KYC checks and agreements apply? |
| Transaction restriction | Not stated in the cited circular. | States that the account is frozen during conversion. | Will any transactions be blocked, and when will access return? |
| Existing holdings | Not stated in the cited circular. | Not stated as a universal rule; ask the provider for its handling. | How will securities and identifiers appear after completion? |
This table demonstrates why copying another investor’s checklist can be risky. The same birthday can produce different screens, forms and temporary restrictions at different providers.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Waiting until after the birthday
Waiting can leave you without a confirmed adult status when you need to trade, transfer or respond to an account event. Start the enquiry several weeks ahead and ask whether pre-submission is allowed.

Using a generic document list
PAN, bank, signature and contact requirements can differ in format and timing. Use the current list supplied by the servicing DP or broker, not a checklist from an unrelated provider.
Ignoring restrictions
If the provider freezes the account during conversion, repeated order attempts may fail without explaining the underlying status. Ask which functions are disabled and how the provider will notify you when access is restored.
Failing to reconcile holdings
Download statements before and after the change. If a security, quantity or identifier appears different, raise a documented service request immediately and retain both statements.

When to escalate a problem
First use the DP or broker’s formal support or grievance channel and keep the case number. Escalate when the provider does not explain the required route, cannot confirm receipt of documents, leaves the account restricted beyond the stated period, or shows holdings that do not match your statements. SEBI’s Investor Charter provides general investor-service and grievance context. It does not replace the provider’s account-specific instructions, so include your DP correspondence and account records in any escalation.
The practical takeaway
At 18, a minor demat account needs a formal minor-to-adult update with its DP or broker. The provider may open a fresh individual account or convert the existing account; documents, account agreements, restrictions and holdings treatment are provider-specific. Contact the provider before the birthday, obtain the current checklist in writing, ask exactly how transactions and securities will be handled, keep submission records and wait for confirmation that the adult account is active.
