What Happens to a Bond’s Price if You Need to Sell Before Maturity?

If you sell a bond before its maturity date, you receive its current market price—not an automatic return of face value. That price can be above or below par. For a fixed-rate bond, comparable market interest rates generally move in the opposite direction from the bond’s price: rising rates tend to push the price down, while falling rates tend to push it up.

Your actual proceeds can differ from the quoted market price because of the issuer’s creditworthiness, time remaining to maturity, trading liquidity, broker commissions and any dealer markdown. The issuer’s promise to repay face value at maturity is therefore not a promise that you can sell for face value early.

What you receive when you sell early

A bond has two different values depending on when you exit:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • At maturity: the issuer is scheduled to pay the bond’s face value, subject to the bond’s terms and the issuer meeting its obligations.
  • Before maturity: you sell to another investor through the market at a price determined by current conditions.

The early-sale price is based on what buyers are willing to pay for the bond’s remaining interest payments and repayment of principal. It may be lower than face value (a discount), equal to face value (par), or higher than face value (a premium). A government guarantee of scheduled payments, where applicable, does not guarantee the bond’s market price if you sell before maturity.

Why interest rates usually move a fixed-rate bond’s price

The coupon is locked in

A fixed-rate bond’s coupon is set when the bond is issued. Suppose your bond pays 3% annually. If newly issued bonds with similar risk and maturity begin offering 4%, buyers have little reason to pay full face value for your lower-paying bond. Its market price generally falls until the return available to a new buyer is competitive.

If comparable market rates fall to 2%, your 3% coupon becomes relatively attractive. Buyers may then bid the price above face value. Paying a premium compensates the buyer for receiving a coupon that is higher than current alternatives; the premium lowers the buyer’s yield to maturity to reflect the higher purchase price.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission summarizes the relationship this way: “A fundamental principle of bond investing is that market interest rates and bond prices generally move in opposite directions.” The relationship is a general rule, not a guarantee of an identical price move for every bond.

Yield to maturity explains the adjustment

Yield to maturity (YTM) incorporates the purchase price, coupon payments, time remaining and the repayment of face value at maturity. All else equal, paying more for the same future cash flows produces a lower YTM; paying less produces a higher YTM.

TreasuryDirect describes the par relationship for Treasury bonds and notes as follows: when YTM is above the auction-set interest rate, the price is below par; when YTM is below that rate, the price is above par. This describes the pricing relationship, not a promise about the price you will receive from a particular dealer.

The exact price of your bond requires its coupon, maturity date, payment schedule, credit quality, current market yields and trading conditions. A one-percentage-point rate move does not produce the same percentage price change for every bond.

What determines how far the price moves

Remaining maturity and rate sensitivity

Longer-maturity bonds generally have greater interest-rate risk than otherwise similar shorter-maturity bonds. More of the bond’s future payments remain exposed to changing market rates, so the price usually has more time to adjust. A bond close to maturity has fewer remaining payments and typically less rate sensitivity, although other risks can still affect its quote.

Coupon rate

Coupon and maturity work together. The SEC notes that both generally affect sensitivity to rate changes. A lower-coupon bond with a long time remaining can be more exposed to rate movements than a higher-coupon bond with the same maturity, but you cannot determine an exact price change from the rate move alone.

Issuer creditworthiness

Buyers evaluate whether the issuer can continue paying interest and return principal. If the issuer’s perceived ability to pay deteriorates, buyers may demand a higher yield, which can lower the bond’s price even if broader market rates have not changed. Improving credit perceptions can support a higher price.

Liquidity and recent trading activity

Liquidity is the ease of finding a buyer at a representative price. A thinly traded bond may take longer to sell, and an available quote may not reflect a deep, continuously traded market. Municipal bonds, for example, can have less-active markets, and quoted prices can differ from the price at which a transaction is ultimately completed.

Commissions and dealer markdowns

Your net proceeds can be lower than the quoted price. A broker may charge a commission or apply a markdown—an amount deducted from the sale price to cover transaction costs and the dealer’s profit. SEC guidance notes that brokers typically do not list markdowns separately on the confirmation. Ask for the markdown before authorizing the sale and compare estimates from more than one brokerage firm when practical.

Face value, quoted price and net proceeds are different numbers

Confusing these three amounts is a common source of surprise:

Amount Meaning Why it matters before selling
Face value (par) The principal amount scheduled for repayment at maturity, subject to the bond’s obligations and issuer performance. It is not an early-sale guarantee.
Market price or quote The price a market participant indicates for buying or selling the bond under current conditions. It can be above or below par and may change before execution.
Net proceeds The amount you actually receive after commissions, markdowns and other transaction charges. This is the figure to compare with your cost basis or financial need.

For example, a $1,000 face-value bond might be quoted at $970. If a dealer applies a $10 markdown, your proceeds would be $960 before any other applicable charge. The quote and the amount deposited into your account are not necessarily identical.

How to sell a bond before maturity

Step 1: Identify the bond’s terms

Record the issuer, coupon rate, maturity date, face value, payment frequency and account location. These details allow the broker to obtain a meaningful quote and help you compare it with the bond’s remaining cash flows.

Step 2: Request a live bid and the estimated net proceeds

Ask the brokerage for the current bid, the bid’s expiration or validity period, the commission, the markdown and the estimated amount you would receive. A bond quote may be expressed as a percentage of par, so confirm the dollar amount for your position.

Step 3: Ask how liquid the bond is

Find out whether the quote is based on a recent trade, an indicative price or a dealer’s willingness to make a market. Ask whether the firm expects difficulty executing the order or whether a limit price is available. A limit order can control the minimum acceptable price, but it may remain unfilled.

Step 4: Compare alternatives

When time permits, seek a second estimate from another brokerage firm. Compare net proceeds rather than headline prices. Also compare the quoted yield, remaining maturity, credit quality and evidence of recent trading activity.

TreasuryDirect has a specific transfer procedure

A marketable Treasury held in TreasuryDirect can be sold before maturity, but TreasuryDirect imposes an account holding period before you can sell or transfer it. You must hold the security there for 45 days first. After that period, you transfer it to a bank, broker or dealer, which executes the sale.

This 45-day rule applies to the TreasuryDirect account procedure; it is not a universal waiting period for every bond held at every brokerage. Check TreasuryDirect’s current instructions before initiating a transfer, especially if you need the proceeds by a particular date.

How to compare two possible sale quotes

Two bonds with the same $1,000 face value can produce very different proceeds. Use the following comparison axes:

Comparison Questions to answer Possible effect on the sale
Current yield versus coupon How does the bond’s coupon compare with yields on similar new bonds? A relatively low coupon can require a discount; a relatively high coupon can support a premium.
Remaining maturity and duration sensitivity How many payments remain, and how exposed is the bond to rate changes? Longer exposure generally means larger price sensitivity.
Issuer credit quality Has the market’s view of the issuer’s ability to pay changed? Higher perceived risk generally requires a higher yield and a lower price.
Liquidity Are there recent, comparable trades and multiple potential buyers? Thin trading can widen the gap between an indicative quote and an executable price.
Broker costs What commission or markdown will be deducted? Higher charges reduce net proceeds even when headline quotes are similar.

Common situations and what they mean

Rates rose after you bought

Your fixed coupon may now be below comparable yields. Unless the bond’s credit or liquidity has changed in your favor, the market price will generally be lower than when you purchased it. Selling locks in the market loss relative to your original purchase price; holding instead leaves the price exposure in place but preserves the scheduled coupon and potential face-value repayment at maturity, subject to issuer performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rates fell after you bought

Your bond’s fixed coupon may be higher than current alternatives. Its market price may therefore be above your purchase price or face value. Selling can realize that premium, but the buyer’s lower YTM reflects the premium paid and the remaining cash flows.

The issuer’s credit outlook weakened

A price decline can occur even when benchmark interest rates are stable. Buyers may demand additional yield for the perceived default risk, and a less-liquid issue can experience a larger discount or a longer execution time.

You need cash immediately from a thinly traded issue

An urgent sale can leave you accepting the available bid rather than waiting for a more favorable buyer. Request an executable quote, ask how long it is valid, and determine whether delaying the transaction is feasible. The practical cost of immediacy may be a wider markdown or a lower bid.

Pitfalls to avoid before placing the order

  • Assuming par is guaranteed early: Face value is the scheduled maturity repayment, not the market’s early-sale price.
  • Using the coupon as the expected return: The coupon is a payment rate on face value; your return after buying or selling also depends on price and time remaining.
  • Relying on a stale quote: Bond markets can be less active than stock markets. Confirm that the quote is current and executable.
  • Ignoring the markdown: Ask specifically what amount will be deducted. It may not be itemized on the confirmation.
  • Comparing only headline prices: Compare net proceeds, yield, liquidity and credit quality across quotes.
  • Overgeneralizing a TreasuryDirect rule: The 45-day holding requirement is an account procedure for securities held there, not a rule for all bonds.
  • Treating the SEC illustration as a forecast: The $1,082 and $925 figures describe one hypothetical Treasury, not your bond’s expected price.

A practical decision framework

Before selling, write down the reason for the sale and the minimum amount you need after costs. Then work through these questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Is the cash need urgent enough that accepting today’s bid is preferable to waiting?
  2. What is the bond’s current executable price, not merely an indicative quote?
  3. What will remain after the commission and markdown?
  4. How do the bond’s remaining coupon payments and maturity compare with your alternatives?
  5. Has the issuer’s creditworthiness or the bond’s liquidity changed?
  6. If you hold instead, can you tolerate further price changes before maturity?

There is no single correct choice based only on whether the quote is above or below par. A below-par sale may be sensible when liquidity or cash needs matter more than waiting; a premium sale may be attractive when you want to realize a gain or reduce exposure. The relevant comparison is the net amount today versus the value and risks of continuing to hold.

Questions to ask the broker

  • What is the current bid in dollars and as a percentage of par?
  • How long is that bid valid?
  • Is it executable for my entire position or only part of it?
  • What commission, markdown or other charge will be deducted?
  • What net proceeds should I expect after all charges?
  • When will the sale settle and the cash become available?
  • Is the quote based on a recent trade, and how active is this bond’s market?
  • Would a limit order be available, and what is the risk it will not execute?

Answering these questions separates the bond’s market value from the transaction cost of converting it to cash. It also makes clear whether a quoted price is a firm bid or merely an estimate.

The key takeaway

Selling before maturity means exchanging the bond’s future payments for whatever price the market offers now. Fixed-rate bond prices generally fall when comparable rates rise and rise when comparable rates fall, but maturity, coupon, creditworthiness and liquidity determine the size and reliability of the move. After the broker’s commission or markdown, your net proceeds may be different again. Check the executable bid, all deductions and the value of holding to maturity before you authorize the sale.
