If you sell a bond before its redemption date—normally its maturity date—you receive the bond’s current secondary-market price, not an automatic return of its face value. The price may be below par, above par, or close to par. Interest-rate changes, the bond’s coupon and remaining term, the issuer’s credit quality, trading liquidity, and your broker’s commission or markdown determine what you actually receive.
That outcome is different from holding the bond until maturity, when the issuer is scheduled to repay face value under the bond’s terms, and from an issuer calling a callable bond. The explanation below uses U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) investor guidance; market rules and tax treatment can differ elsewhere.

First, identify which “redemption” you mean
Retail investors often use “redemption date” to mean the bond’s maturity date: the date on which the issuer is due to repay the principal, usually the face (par) value. Selling before that date is a voluntary secondary-market transaction initiated by you.

Under its call provisions, the issuer can redeem the bond before maturity at a stated call price, usually face value, plus accrued interest and sometimes a call premium. You do not choose the market sale price in an issuer call; the bond ends according to the contract. The SEC describes these provisions in its callable-bond explanation.

What you receive when you sell early
Your broker seeks a buyer in the secondary market and gives you an executable quote for the quantity you want to sell. The quote reflects the bond’s market value at that time. It can be higher than the amount you paid, lower than face value, or lower than your original purchase cost even when the bond issuer continues making every scheduled payment.
The SEC’s guidance on selling before maturity emphasizes that an early sale is not a guaranteed par-value repayment. A Treasury’s government backing addresses the issuer’s obligation under its terms; it does not guarantee the market price if you sell before maturity. As the SEC puts it in its fixed-income bulletin, “In fact, the U.S. government does not guarantee the market price or value of the bond if you sell the bond before it matures.”
What reaches your account is the sale proceeds after any applicable broker commission, markdown, and other transaction charges. The exact amount also depends on the bond identifier and quantity, the live quote, trade timing, settlement and accrued-interest details, and the firm executing the order.

Market interest rates
For a conventional fixed-rate bond, market prices generally move in the opposite direction from prevailing interest rates. If newly issued bonds begin offering higher rates, an older bond with a lower coupon is less attractive, so buyers normally require a lower price. If market rates fall, the older bond’s relatively higher coupon can support a higher price. The relationship is not a promise for every trade; credit conditions, liquidity and supply and demand also affect the quote.

Coupon and remaining maturity
A bond paying less than current market rates usually trades at a discount, while one paying more may trade at a premium. Longer remaining maturities generally have greater interest-rate sensitivity than otherwise similar shorter maturities. Coupon level also affects that sensitivity. A short-dated bond and a long-dated bond with the same issuer and credit quality can therefore react differently to the same rate move.
SEC illustration: one bond, two rate environments
The SEC’s bulletin uses a $1,000 face-value Treasury with a 3% coupon and nine years remaining. These figures are illustrations, not current quotes or forecasts:
| Market-rate change in the SEC illustration | Illustrated bond value | What the example shows |
|---|---|---|
| Rates fall from 3% to 2% | $1,082 | The existing 3% coupon becomes more valuable relative to new 2% bonds, so the price is above par. |
| Rates rise from 3% to 4% | $925 | The existing 3% coupon becomes less attractive relative to new 4% bonds, so the price is below par. |
These are the SEC’s hypothetical values for that specific coupon, maturity and rate change. They are not a prediction of what your bond will sell for.

Issuer credit risk
Buyers evaluate whether the issuer can make interest and principal payments. If the issuer’s financial condition or perceived creditworthiness deteriorates, the bond’s market value can fall even when broad interest rates are unchanged. Credit risk applies to corporate, municipal and other non-government issuers, and it can matter for government securities issued by entities whose obligations are not backed in the same way as U.S. Treasury obligations.

Liquidity and supply and demand
A liquid bond has active buyers and sellers and generally more readily observable pricing. Thinly traded bonds may have fewer potential buyers, wider differences between buying and selling prices, and less transparent quotes. The SEC notes that corporate bonds can trade less frequently and have less price transparency than equities; you may need a broker to locate a buyer. A seller may have to accept a less favorable price or wait for a tradeable market.
How broker charges reduce your proceeds
The displayed price is not necessarily your net amount. A broker can charge a commission or reduce the price it pays you through a markdown. The SEC advises asking what markdown applies and comparing firms because both pricing and charges can vary. A markdown may not appear as a separate line on your confirmation statement, so ask how the quoted price was calculated before submitting the order.
Request these details in writing or in the firm’s order ticket:

What the sale process looks like
- Confirm the security. Check the CUSIP or other identifier, face amount, coupon rate, maturity date, call provisions and account in which the bond is held. A bond with the same issuer can have different prices if its coupon, maturity or seniority differs.
- Ask for a live quote. Tell the broker how much face value you want to sell and ask for the bid, quote time, validity period and whether the market is firm or indicative.
- Get the all-in cost. Ask specifically for commission, markdown and other charges, plus the estimated net proceeds after the trade settles.
- Check liquidity and order limits. A thinly traded issue may fill only partly or not immediately. Ask whether the broker will seek several dealers and how long an order can remain open.
- Review the order confirmation. Verify the security, quantity, execution price, charges and settlement details. If the confirmation does not show a markdown separately, request an explanation from the firm.
- Keep the records. Retain the confirmation and your purchase information. Your cost basis and tax result depend on your jurisdiction, account type, bond type and circumstances.
Will you lose money?
You lose money relative to your purchase cost when the net sale proceeds are lower than what you paid, after considering any transaction charges and income already received. A sale below par is not automatically a loss: you could have bought the bond at an even lower price, and coupon payments may offset part of the decline. Conversely, a sale above par can still produce a loss if your original purchase price was higher or costs are substantial.
There is no universal break-even calculation without your purchase price, quantity, coupon payments, current quote, accrued-interest settlement amount, charges and timing. The bond’s market price can change between an indicative quote and execution.

Holding a bond to maturity leaves you exposed to the issuer’s ability to pay, but it avoids having to sell at an interim market price. If the issuer meets its obligations and you hold the security through maturity, the contractual repayment is generally the face value, subject to the bond’s terms. You continue receiving scheduled coupons until then.

How bond type affects an early sale
| Bond or situation | What an early seller should focus on |
|---|---|
| U.S. Treasury or other government security | Market price still fluctuates with rates and trading conditions. Government backing does not guarantee the price received in an early sale. |
| Corporate bond | Assess issuer credit, dealer inventory and liquidity. Corporate issues may trade less often and have less transparent pricing than equities. |
| Municipal bond | Its market value can be above or below face value before maturity; evaluate the specific issue’s market and call terms. |
| Callable bond | Read the call schedule, call price, notice provisions and dates. An issuer call is a contractual redemption, not your voluntary secondary-market sale. |
The SEC’s investor materials provide overviews for fixed-rate bond price movements, bond risks, corporate bonds and municipal bonds.
Common situations and how to handle them
The quote is below par
Ask whether the discount reflects current rates, the issuer’s credit, a call feature, limited liquidity or a broker markdown. Compare the net quote with the value of keeping the bond and collecting coupons. Do not assume that waiting guarantees a recovery; prices can move in either direction.
The quote is above par
A premium may reflect a coupon higher than current market rates or a favorable change in rates or credit perception. Check the call schedule: an issuer may be able to redeem a premium bond at a stated call price before maturity, which can limit how long that premium persists.

Ask whether the bond is thinly traded, whether the broker can solicit several dealers, and whether a limit order or another execution method is available. A lack of an immediate quote does not establish a fair value; it indicates that execution may be difficult or delayed.
You need the money on a fixed date
Allow time for a quote, execution and settlement rather than assuming a sale is instantaneous. Confirm the settlement date and the amount that will be available for withdrawal before committing to a payment or purchase.
Taxes and record-keeping
The sources for this explanation do not establish a single tax rule. Tax treatment can depend on your country or state, taxable versus tax-advantaged account, bond type, purchase discount or premium, adjusted cost basis and the circumstances of the sale. Keep trade confirmations and acquisition records, and consult a qualified tax professional for a personal determination. Do not infer a tax result solely from the bond’s coupon or whether the sale price was above or below face value.
A practical checklist before placing the order
- Have I confirmed that I mean a voluntary sale, not an issuer call?
- Do I know the bond’s identifier, face amount, coupon, maturity and call terms?
- Is the quote executable, and when does it expire?
- What are the commission, markdown, other charges and estimated net proceeds?
- How liquid is this issue, and could the order fill only partially?
- What coupons and principal would I give up by selling now?
- Could interest rates, credit conditions or a call materially change the value while I wait?
- Have I confirmed settlement timing and retained my cost-basis records?
Checking these items turns an early bond sale from an assumption about getting your principal back into an informed decision about price, costs, timing and risk.
