What Happens If You Miss the IRA Excess Contribution Correction Deadline?

If an IRA excess contribution remains after the applicable correction deadline, the usual federal consequence is a 6% additional tax on the excess that remains in the IRA at the end of the tax year. You report that tax on Form 5329. A timely filer may still have a six-month withdrawal procedure, while later corrections can involve post-deadline withdrawal or applying the excess to a later year, depending on the IRA type and contribution history.

The immediate consequence: a 6% additional tax

The Internal Revenue Service generally imposes a 6% additional tax when an excess IRA contribution has not been removed by the deadline and remains in the account at the end of the tax year. Publication 590-A explains that the 6% applies to the excess contribution for that year; the tax can apply for each year an excess remains, subject to the applicable rules. The tax is limited to 6% of the combined value of all of your IRAs at year-end. See the IRS explanation in Publication 590-A (2025).

For example, the IRS gives a $500 excess contribution that produces a $30 additional tax for 2025 (6% × $500). That is a worked example, not a universal amount. Your excess must be calculated using the contribution limit, eligibility rules and all of your IRA contributions for the specific tax year.

The 6% charge is not the same as ordinary income tax on a distribution. It is an additional tax reported on Form 5329, and it may continue to apply in a later year if the excess has not been resolved. The account’s investment gain or loss can also affect the tax treatment of a withdrawal, so do not assume that withdrawing exactly the original contribution will always complete the correction.

Which deadline did you miss?

Two different timing rules are commonly confused. The regular correction deadline is the due date of the return for the contribution year, including extensions. A separate six-month procedure can be available only when the return itself was timely filed without removing the excess.

Situation Relevant timing What it can mean
Excess removed by the regular deadline By the return due date, including a valid extension The normal correction process may avoid the 6% tax for that year, provided the withdrawal and earnings are reported correctly.
Return timely filed, but excess was not removed Withdrawal no later than six months after the return due date, excluding extensions The IRS describes a limited procedure requiring an amended return, related earnings and an explanation of the withdrawal.
Both windows have passed After the six-month period Do not assume the excess is permanently uncorrectable. IRS rules describe some post-deadline traditional-IRA withdrawals and applying an excess to a later year, but eligibility and tax effects are fact-specific.

The six-month rule is not an automatic extension for everyone. The Form 5329 instructions state: “If you timely filed your 2025 tax return without withdrawing the excess contributions, you can still make the withdrawal no later than 6 months after the due date of your tax return, excluding extensions.” Read the edition for the year you are correcting at IRS Instructions for Form 5329.

How to use the six-month procedure

If your return was filed on time and you are still within six months after the applicable due date (not counting extensions), work through these steps before requesting a distribution.

  1. Confirm the tax year and the actual excess. Recalculate the permitted contribution for that year. Include contributions to every traditional and Roth IRA, and check the eligibility facts that determine whether a contribution was allowed.
  2. Check that the return was timely filed. The special procedure depends on timely filing. The date you obtained an extension and the date you filed the return are not interchangeable; review the filing record for the specific year.
  3. Request a corrective distribution from the IRA custodian. Tell the custodian that the distribution is intended to remove the excess and ask how it calculates the related earnings or losses. Keep the custodian’s calculation and confirmation.
  4. Withdraw by the six-month cutoff. The withdrawal must be completed no later than six months after the return due date, excluding extensions. Use the due date and the year involved rather than counting from the day you discovered the mistake.
  5. File an amended return when required. The IRS says to file an amended return marked “Filed pursuant to section 301.9100-2,” report the related earnings and explain the withdrawal. Use Form 1040-X if other changes are needed, and attach the appropriate year’s Form 5329 or other required schedules.
  6. Check the Form 5329 calculation. The form reports the additional tax and any remaining excess. Use the form edition for the tax year being corrected, not automatically the current-year version.

Keep statements showing the contribution, distribution, earnings calculation and filing dates. Those records help establish whether the withdrawal was timely and whether the amount reported matches the custodian’s calculation.

What if the six-month window has also passed?

Missing both deadlines does not by itself prove that no correction is possible. Publication 590-A describes circumstances in which an excess contribution to a traditional IRA can be withdrawn after the return deadline. It also describes applying an excess contribution to a later year when you have room under that later year’s limit. The precise route depends on the account type, the year of the contribution, whether a deduction was claimed or allowed, and what has already been reported.

Post-deadline withdrawal

For some traditional-IRA situations, a later withdrawal can address the excess, but the distribution may have income-tax consequences and may not receive the same treatment as a timely corrective distribution. The IRS rules do not authorize a blanket “withdraw anything now” solution. Ask the custodian what distribution code and calculation apply, then match that information to the instructions for the affected year.

Applying the excess to a later year

If a later year’s contribution limit has unused capacity, the excess can sometimes be treated as a contribution for that later year. This can stop the excess from continuing indefinitely, but it does not automatically erase the 6% tax for an earlier year in which the excess remained in the IRA at year-end. You may still need to file or amend the earlier year’s Form 5329 and pay the additional tax for that year.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Roth IRA and traditional IRA differences

The contribution limits are combined across your traditional and Roth IRAs, but the tax reporting is not identical. A traditional IRA contribution may have been deducted, partially deducted or nondeductible. Roth contributions are not deductible, yet an excess Roth contribution can still trigger the 6% additional tax. The distribution and basis rules therefore require a year-specific review rather than a one-size-fits-all instruction.

Calculate the excess before choosing a remedy

Do not use the $500 IRS example as your own calculation. Build a contribution record for the exact tax year.

  1. List every contribution by date and IRA. Include traditional and Roth IRAs, rollovers that were treated as contributions, and any recharacterizations or returned amounts shown by the custodian.
  2. Identify the year’s limit and eligibility rules. Contribution limits and income-based eligibility rules can change by tax year. Use the IRS publication and instructions for that year rather than a current-year chart.
  3. Subtract permitted contributions from total contributions. The excess is the amount above the allowed total after applying the year’s rules.
  4. Review deductions. Determine whether a traditional IRA contribution was claimed or allowed as a deduction. That fact can affect the tax result when money is later distributed.
  5. Check all year-end IRA values. The IRS limits the 6% tax to 6% of the combined value of all IRAs at year-end, so gather statements for every IRA, not only the account that received the contribution.
  6. Track prior-year excesses. An excess carried into the year can affect the amount subject to tax and the amount that can be applied to a later year.

If the custodian’s records conflict with your tax return, resolve the contribution and distribution dates first. A tax professional may need to reconstruct the basis and prior-year forms before determining the correct withdrawal or carry-forward amount.

Forms and reporting responsibilities

Form or instruction Purpose Important timing point
Form 5329 instructions Reports the additional tax on excess contributions and other IRA-related taxes. For a prior year, use that year’s form edition. The IRS specifically directs taxpayers to use the prior-year version when correcting a prior year.
Form 1040-X Amends a previously filed individual income-tax return when other return information must change. Use it with the applicable year’s Form 5329 when the correction changes items beyond the standalone additional-tax calculation.
Form 8606 instructions Addresses nondeductible traditional IRA contributions and certain basis, conversion and distribution reporting. Whether it is required depends on your contribution and distribution history.
Publication 17 (2025) Provides broader federal individual-income-tax filing guidance. Use the edition for the tax year at issue; filing deadlines and line references change.

Form 5329 is central even when you ultimately correct the account. If you are filing for a prior year, download that year’s form and instructions. If the amended return changes income, deductions or other items, Form 1040-X may be necessary in addition to Form 5329.

Worked examples of the three timing paths

Example Facts Likely reporting focus
Corrected by the regular deadline A taxpayer discovers a contribution exceeded the year’s allowed amount and obtains a properly calculated corrective distribution by the return due date, including an extension. Report the distribution and related earnings as instructed for that year; verify that no excess remains for the year-end calculation.
Timely return, six-month correction The taxpayer filed the return on time but did not remove the excess. The six-month period after the due date, excluding extensions, has not ended. Complete the corrective distribution, file the amended return marked “Filed pursuant to section 301.9100-2,” report related earnings and update Form 5329.
Both deadlines missed The excess remained in the IRA at year-end and the six-month period has expired. Calculate the 6% additional tax on the applicable excess, file the correct year’s Form 5329, and evaluate a permitted later withdrawal or application to a later year. Earlier-year tax is not automatically erased.
IRS’s numerical example A $500 excess for 2025. Publication 590-A illustrates a $30 additional tax (6% of $500). Your result can differ because your excess and year-end IRA values differ.

Common mistakes after missing the deadline

  • Using the current year’s limit. A contribution made in an earlier year must be tested against that earlier year’s limit and eligibility rules.
  • Counting only one IRA. The contribution limit applies across traditional and Roth IRAs, and the year-end value limitation considers all IRAs.
  • Confusing an extension with the six-month rule. The six-month procedure is tied to a timely filed return and excludes extensions when measuring the six months.
  • Assuming a later-year application wipes out an earlier tax. Applying an excess to a later year can address the contribution going forward, but it does not automatically remove a 6% tax caused by an earlier year-end excess.
  • Ignoring earnings or losses. A corrective distribution can include related earnings or losses calculated under the custodian’s method; report the amount required for the applicable year.
  • Filing only a current-year Form 5329. A prior-year correction generally requires the form edition for that prior year.
  • Overlooking deduction and basis records. Whether a traditional contribution was deducted or nondeductible can change the tax treatment of a later distribution and whether Form 8606 is needed.
  • Taking an uncoordinated distribution. A normal IRA distribution may create income tax or other consequences and may not correct the excess in the manner you intend.

When professional help is sensible

Consider a qualified tax professional or enrolled agent when the excess spans multiple years, involves both traditional and Roth IRAs, includes recharacterizations or conversions, or requires several amended returns. Professional review is especially useful when you cannot establish the original contribution dates, the deduction history or the year-end value of every IRA.

Bring contribution confirmations, year-end statements, Forms 1099-R and 5498, prior returns, Forms 5329 and 8606, and any custodian calculation of earnings or losses. The goal is to determine the exact excess for each year and file the corresponding forms, not simply to withdraw an arbitrary amount.

A practical checklist

  1. Identify the contribution year and whether the account is traditional, Roth or both.
  2. Recalculate total contributions against that year’s limit and eligibility rules.
  3. Determine whether the return was filed by its due date.
  4. Measure the six-month period from the due date, excluding extensions, if the return was timely.
  5. Obtain the custodian’s written calculation for any proposed withdrawal.
  6. Gather all IRA year-end values and prior-year excess information.
  7. Use the correct year’s Form 5329 and determine whether Form 1040-X or Form 8606 is also required.
  8. Check the relevant IRS instructions before filing and document every distribution and amendment.

The correct response to a missed deadline is therefore a documented, year-specific correction plan: calculate the excess, determine whether the six-month procedure is still open, report the 6% additional tax when required, and evaluate any post-deadline or later-year option under the rules for your particular IRA.
