What happens next depends on who controls the keys. If your cryptocurrency is held in a custodial exchange account, the exchange may be able to restore your login after identity checks. If you use a self-custody wallet, access normally depends on a recovery phrase, private key, or recovery method that you set up before the problem occurred. A wallet company can explain its software, but it generally cannot recreate missing self-custody secrets or move the assets for you.
Start by identifying what you lost: a device, app password or PIN, recovery phrase, private key, passkey, social-login access, or exchange credentials. Each situation has a different remedy, and trying the wrong one can expose your funds to a scam.

First determine whether the wallet is custodial or self-custody
The most important distinction is control of the private keys. In a custodial arrangement, an exchange holds the keys and credits your account with a balance. In self-custody, the wallet software helps you manage keys, but you are responsible for the recovery material.

| Wallet arrangement | Who controls the keys | What recovery usually requires | What the provider can do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Custodial exchange account | The exchange or custodian | Account-recovery request, identity checks and any required security review | May reset access, subject to its rules, holds and review times |
| Self-custody wallet | You, through a recovery phrase or private key | The correct phrase, private key or a recovery method configured in advance | Can explain its app and restore process, but normally cannot recreate a missing secret or transfer funds for you |
Coinbase’s explanation of exchanges and self-custody wallets makes the same custody distinction. Ethereum.org’s wallet FAQ says that without the seed phrase or private keys, funds cannot be recovered. Those are different outcomes from losing an exchange password, where the platform may still be able to verify your identity and reopen the account.

Match the problem to the credential you lost
You lost a phone, computer or wallet installation
A missing device does not necessarily mean the cryptocurrency is gone. A compatible wallet can usually recreate the wallet on a replacement device when you still have the correct recovery phrase or private key. Install the wallet only from its official website or app-store listing, then use its documented restore or import option.
Do not assume that every asset or account will appear automatically. A phrase restores the accounts supported by that wallet implementation; some networks or tokens may require adding the correct network or account type after restoration. Follow the wallet’s own instructions rather than entering the phrase into a random “recovery” website.
You forgot a local password or PIN
A local password or app PIN can protect an installation without being the key that controls the assets. MetaMask explicitly distinguishes its local password from its Secret Recovery Phrase: the password unlocks that installation, while the phrase restores the wallet elsewhere. If the device is still available, use the wallet’s password-reset or export procedure. If the installation is lost or cannot be unlocked, restore on a new device with the phrase.
A phone’s screen lock, a wallet app PIN and an exchange password are also separate credentials. Test each possibility carefully; repeated guesses can trigger security locks, while a fake reset page can steal the phrase you are trying to protect.
You lost a recovery phrase or private key
For ordinary self-custody wallets, this is the decisive failure. Search every location where you deliberately stored the phrase: a written backup, encrypted password manager entry, secure offline copy or another backup you created when setting up the wallet. Never treat a screenshot, email or cloud note as safe merely because it is convenient; anyone who obtains the phrase can generally control the funds.

If the phrase and private key are both gone, a wallet provider normally has no master copy to issue. Ethereum.org states, “Without your seed phrase or private keys, your funds cannot be recovered.” Coinbase Wallet likewise says it cannot access your authentication method or move funds on your behalf.
You lost a passkey, email, social login or cloud-backup access
Some newer wallets use a passkey, email or social account as part of their sign-in design. In those products, recovering the original sign-in method may restore access without typing a traditional phrase. Coinbase Wallet’s documented options include signing in with the original email, social or passkey method and, where configured, reimporting through a supported Google Drive or iCloud backup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThese options are product-specific. They do not mean that every self-custody wallet can be reset through email, and they do not give the provider a copy of your private key. Use the exact recovery path for the wallet and account type you created.
Immediate steps before you attempt recovery
- Stop responding to unsolicited messages. Do not follow a recovery link sent by direct message, email or a forum reply. Open the provider’s official website or app yourself.
- Write down what remains available. Record whether you still have the old device, app installation, PIN, recovery phrase, private key, passkey, email account, social account or exchange identity documents. Do not write a phrase into a support ticket.
- Check the destination before entering any credential. Verify the spelling of the domain and the publisher of the mobile app. A wallet provider’s support staff should never need your seed phrase or private key.
- Preserve evidence if theft may be involved. Save transaction hashes, wallet addresses, dates and screenshots, but redact recovery phrases, private keys, authentication codes and identity-document numbers before sharing anything.
- Do not uninstall a working wallet prematurely. If the old app still opens, use its official backup or export process first. Moving funds to a fresh wallet can be sensible after a suspected compromise, but do it only after confirming the destination address and network.
How to recover a custodial exchange account
Use the exchange’s account-recovery workflow, not a generic wallet-import screen. The exact identity checks, deadlines and transfer restrictions vary by platform.
Typical exchange recovery sequence
- Open the exchange’s official login page or mobile app and select the option for a lost email address, lost two-step-verification device or inaccessible account.
- Provide the requested account details and complete identity verification through the exchange’s secure process. Do not send documents to an individual who contacts you outside that process.
- Complete any additional review, such as a trusted-contact approval, if the exchange offers it for your case.
- Wait for the stated review decision and check the account for unauthorized withdrawals, changed security settings and unfamiliar devices before trading or transferring.
- After access returns, replace the lost email or authenticator, revoke unknown sessions and create new recovery codes.
Coinbase documents an ID-based process for some users who lose email or two-step-verification access. Its stated review can take up to 24 hours, and sending funds may be restricted for 24 hours after the process is completed. Those timings are Coinbase’s published process details, not a universal exchange standard.

How to restore a self-custody wallet with a recovery phrase
Use this route only when you possess the phrase and have verified that it belongs to the wallet you are trying to restore.
Recommended Free Tools
- Download the same wallet application, or a compatible wallet with documented import support, from its official distribution channel.
- Choose Restore, Import or the equivalent option. Do not select “create new wallet” if you intend to regain an existing one.
- Enter the words in the exact order shown on your backup. A single misspelling, missing word or changed order creates a different wallet.
- Set a new local password or PIN for the replacement installation. This protects the device; it is not a substitute for the recovery phrase.
- Confirm that the expected account addresses and balances appear on the correct networks. Check a public block explorer by address if the wallet display is incomplete.
- Before sending anything, make a fresh offline backup of the phrase and test that you can read every word. Never photograph or paste it into a website, chat or cloud document.
MetaMask’s restore guidance uses the Secret Recovery Phrase to recreate accounts on another device. The precise labels and supported account types differ among wallets, so do not infer that a MetaMask procedure applies unchanged to another product.
Wallet-specific methods that may work only when enabled beforehand
Cloud or social backups
Some consumer wallets let you protect an existing wallet backup with a Google Drive or iCloud account, or authenticate through an original email or social login. These methods can help when the phone is gone but the account used for the backup still works. They cannot retrieve a phrase that was never backed up, and a new cloud account will not magically contain an old wallet.
Smart-wallet passkey recovery
Smart wallets can use passkeys and on-chain signer changes rather than the conventional single phrase model. Coinbase’s documented Smart Wallet recovery flow requires the recovery phrase to have been generated while the original passkey still worked. That phrase can then be used to add a new passkey. Changing signers incurs network fees once for each chain in use.
This is a product-specific mechanism, not a general property of passkeys or all wallets. If the phrase was not generated in advance and the original passkey is unavailable, that particular recovery path may not exist.

What to do when no self-custody recovery material remains
Make one careful inventory before concluding that access is impossible: check every deliberate offline backup, a password manager protected by a separate master credential, a second device that is still unlocked, and any wallet-specific recovery feature that was configured before the loss. If none exists, do not keep handing information to people who promise a rescue.
Blockchain transactions generally cannot be reversed by a wallet company. A provider may help identify which app or network you used, but it cannot generate the missing private key. Be particularly cautious if someone asks for an upfront payment, remote desktop access, a seed phrase, a private key or a “verification transfer.” Bitcoin.org warns that “No legitimate firm offers guaranteed cryptocurrency recovery.”
How to spot fake support and recovery scams
- Unsolicited contact: Scammers monitor public posts about lost wallets and then impersonate support agents or recovery specialists.
- Requests for secrets: Legitimate support should not ask for a seed phrase, private key, one-time code or password.
- Guaranteed results: A promise to recover stolen or lost cryptocurrency for a fee is a major warning sign.
- Remote-access demands: Screen-sharing or remote-control software can expose an unlocked wallet and other accounts.
- Urgency and payment pressure: Requests for cryptocurrency, gift cards or an upfront “unlock” fee are not normal account-recovery steps.
If you already disclosed a phrase or private key, treat the wallet as compromised. Create a new wallet on a clean device, verify its backup, and transfer any remaining assets to the new addresses while checking each network and destination carefully. Do not reuse the exposed phrase.
After you regain access: make the next loss less damaging
- Keep at least one durable offline backup of the recovery phrase you still control. A metal backup plate can protect a phrase from fire or water, but it cannot recreate a phrase that is already missing.
- Store backup copies in separate secure locations so one burglary, fire or move does not destroy every copy. Avoid labeling the container in a way that advertises its contents.
- For exchange accounts, use a unique password, an authenticator or hardware security key where supported, updated recovery codes and a current email address.
- Review connected devices, passkeys, spending permissions and withdrawal addresses after any recovery event.
- Consider a hardware wallet for future setup if its operating model suits you, but remember that it does not solve a lost phrase. The same backup responsibility remains.
- Write down the exact wallet product, network names and account-derivation details needed to restore the setup. This reduces confusion if you must migrate later.
Recovery decision checklist
| What you still have | Most appropriate next action | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Exchange login email or identity documents, but not the password or second factor | Use the exchange’s official account-recovery process | Identity review, waiting periods and temporary transfer holds may apply |
| Self-custody recovery phrase or private key | Restore or import into the wallet’s official application | The phrase must be correct and compatible with the wallet and accounts |
| Old device with an unlocked wallet | Use the wallet’s backup, export or recovery-settings flow before replacing it | Leaving the device unlocked or exposing exports can compromise the funds |
| Configured cloud, social or passkey recovery | Use the wallet’s documented sign-in or backup-restore path | Availability depends on the exact product and prior setup |
| No phrase, private key, unlocked device or configured recovery method | Search existing secure backups once, then stop engaging recovery offers | For ordinary self-custody wallets, the provider generally cannot restore access |
Important product boundaries
“Wallet” can describe very different products. A consumer wallet, a smart wallet, an exchange account and an institutional on-chain wallet may use different keys, signers and recovery controls. Coinbase’s consumer Wallet instructions should not be generalized to Coinbase Smart Wallet or Coinbase Prime’s institutional procedures. Prime’s key-shard and signer processes are designed for institutional accounts, not an ordinary individual wallet.
When in doubt, identify the exact product name and follow only its current official help documentation. The recovery method is determined by how that product was designed and what you configured before access was lost—not by the fact that it displays cryptocurrency balances.
