You can keep the money invested without making new deposits, and it continues to earn interest at the rate applicable under the PPF Scheme. In that no-deposit mode, you may make one withdrawal in each year. You can instead close the account and take the balance, or elect a further five-year extension with deposits—but that election must be made within one year after maturity.
The short answer
A matured PPF account gives you three scheme-supported choices:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Keep it without new deposits: the balance remains in the account, continues earning the applicable PPF interest, and can be accessed through one withdrawal in each year.
- Close it: apply in Form-3 and receive the full balance, including interest due up to the last day of the month before closure.
- Extend it with deposits: elect another five-year block by submitting Form-4 before one year has elapsed from maturity.
These options come from the Public Provident Fund Scheme, 2019 and the National Savings Institute’s PPF account summary. The most important deadline is the one-year window for choosing the with-deposit extension. Once the account has continued in no-deposit mode for more than a year, you cannot later switch to the extension-with-deposits route.
What “maturity” means for a PPF account
PPF maturity is not calculated simply by adding 15 years to the date printed on your opening form. The scheme measures maturity after 15 complete financial years from the end of the financial year in which the account was opened. The opening financial year and the account record are therefore needed to establish the operative maturity date.
#1 Best Overall
For example, an account opened at any point during financial year 2010–11 is measured from 31 March 2011, the end of that opening financial year. The 15 complete financial years are then counted under the scheme. This illustrates why an account opened in July does not normally mature on the anniversary of the July opening date. Use the maturity date shown by your bank or post office record when calculating the one-year election deadline; do not rely on an anniversary calculation alone.
If the record is unclear, ask the branch or post office holding the account to confirm the maturity date in writing before submitting a closure or extension request. The date matters because the Form-4 election period runs from maturity, not from the date on which you happen to notice that the account has matured.
Your three choices after maturity
1. Leave the account open without new deposits
The PPF Scheme permits you to retain the matured account without making further deposits. The existing balance continues to earn interest at the rate applicable to the PPF Scheme. The account may be retained for any period under this option; the scheme does not require you to withdraw the money every year.

This makes the no-deposit mode useful when you want the money to remain invested but may need staged access rather than the entire balance immediately. A withdrawal in one year does not create a general right to make multiple withdrawals in that same year under this rule.
The one-withdrawal rule is an account feature, not a mandatory annual transaction. If you make no withdrawal, the balance can remain invested and continue earning the applicable scheme rate.

2. Close the account and withdraw the balance
You may apply to close a matured account using Form-3. On closure, the full balance is payable with interest due up to the last day of the month before closure, according to the scheme wording. This is the choice for someone who needs the entire balance, no longer wants a PPF account, or prefers to move the money elsewhere rather than retain the account under the post-maturity rules.
Because the interest calculation is tied to the month before closure, confirm the account office’s required form, identity documents and processing date before submitting the request. Keep the acknowledgement and the final account statement so you can reconcile the amount credited with the closure calculation.
3. Extend the account with deposits for another five years
You can elect a further five-year block with deposits by applying in Form-4 before one year expires from the maturity date. This route is designed for an account holder who wants to keep the PPF account active as an investment and continue contributing under the scheme.
The one-year period is a real cut-off. If the account has already remained in no-deposit mode for more than a year, the scheme does not allow a later switch to extension with deposits. Decide during the first year even if you do not yet know the exact deposit pattern you will use; waiting past the deadline can remove the with-deposit option.
Comparison of the post-maturity options
| Choice | New deposits | Access to money | Time limit or form | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Continue without deposits | Not made under this mode | One withdrawal in each year, of any amount within the balance | May be retained for any period; no annual withdrawal is compulsory | Someone who wants continued PPF interest with occasional access |
| Close the account | No | Full balance payable on closure, with interest due through the last day of the preceding month | Apply in Form-3 | Someone who needs the whole balance or wants to end the account |
| Extend with deposits | Yes, under a new five-year block | Withdrawal rules for the extended account apply under the scheme; choose this route only if you intend to keep contributing | Elect in Form-4 before one year after maturity expires | Someone who wants to keep investing through PPF and can meet the deadline |
The table separates two decisions that are often confused: whether to keep the account open and whether to keep depositing. Keeping it open without deposits is not the same as electing the five-year extension with deposits.

Can you withdraw PPF money in parts after maturity?
Yes, if you use the no-deposit continuation option, the scheme allows one withdrawal in each year and permits that withdrawal to be any amount within the balance. You therefore do not have to take the entire balance at once.
For example, you could leave the account invested, make one partial withdrawal in a year when you need funds, and make another permitted withdrawal in a later year. The rule does not say that you must withdraw a fixed percentage or a fixed rupee amount. It does, however, limit the no-deposit mode to one withdrawal in each year, so plan requests accordingly.
If you need the entire balance immediately, the closure route is different: submit Form-3 rather than trying to assemble the balance through repeated annual withdrawals.
Can you keep depositing after the PPF matures?
Only if you validly elect the with-deposit extension within one year after maturity. Form-4 is the form identified for that election and the extension is for a further five-year block.
Do not keep sending deposits while assuming that the account has automatically been extended. The scheme states that deposits made after the one-year extension-election period without a valid election are irregular and must be refunded without interest. A deposit accepted by an account office is not, by itself, proof that the required extension election was made on time.

Before making a post-maturity deposit, verify three items with the account office:
- the maturity date recorded for your account;
- the last date on which Form-4 can be submitted; and
- that the account has been recorded as extended with deposits before you send further money.
How interest works after maturity
The balance in the no-deposit mode continues to earn interest at the rate applicable under the PPF Scheme. The rate is not a single permanent number: small-savings rates are published through periodic Department of Economic Affairs notices. The Department’s Small Savings page lists those notices.
Do not use an old PPF rate as though it were current. A notice dated 30 September 2026 is listed for the third quarter of financial year 2026–27, but the material available here does not expose the PPF line from that notice. Check the current notice and the PPF entry applicable to the relevant quarter before making a projection. The scheme rule is clear that the account continues at the applicable rate; the exact rate must be verified for the period you are evaluating.
For a personal projection, use the balance shown on your latest statement, the verified maturity date, the official rate for each relevant period and the withdrawals you actually make. Do not assume that a partial withdrawal leaves the original balance untouched for subsequent interest calculations.

What about tax?
The National Savings Institute describes PPF interest as free from income tax in its general scheme summary. That is a scheme-level description, not individualized tax advice for a particular taxpayer, account structure or tax year. If your return, residency, family contribution or other facts create a special issue, obtain advice for that situation rather than treating a general summary as a personalized tax conclusion.

Choose no-deposit continuation when access can be gradual
- You want the balance to remain in a PPF account.
- You may need money occasionally but not the whole balance immediately.
- You value the ability to make one withdrawal in each year without committing to new deposits.
This route preserves flexibility, but remember that the with-deposit election cannot be recovered after more than a year in no-deposit mode.
Choose closure when you need the entire balance
- You have a defined use for all of the money.
- You no longer want the account to remain open.
- You prefer one settlement rather than managing annual withdrawal limits.
Use Form-3 and review the closure amount, including the interest due through the last day of the preceding month.

- You intend to keep putting money into PPF.
- You can submit Form-4 before the one-year deadline.
- You have checked the account office’s recording of the election before making further deposits.
If you are undecided, do not allow the deadline to pass silently. The practical cost of waiting is that the with-deposit route may no longer be available, even though the no-deposit account can continue.
A practical post-maturity checklist
- Confirm the maturity date. Ask your bank or post office for the date based on the financial year in which the account was opened and compare it with your statement.
- Mark the one-year Form-4 deadline. Count from the recorded maturity date, not from the date you receive a reminder or discover the account has matured.
- Decide whether you need all, some or none of the balance. Full access points toward Form-3; occasional access can fit the no-deposit mode.
- If extending with deposits, submit Form-4 on time. Retain the acknowledgement or other proof that the election was recorded.
- If closing, submit Form-3 and check the settlement. Confirm that the payment reflects interest due through the last day of the month before closure.
- If retaining without deposits, track withdrawals by year. The rule allows one withdrawal in each year, so record the date and amount of every request.
- Verify the applicable interest rate. Use the Department of Economic Affairs’ current small-savings notice rather than an outdated rate quoted elsewhere.
- Store statements and forms. Keep maturity confirmation, Form-3 or Form-4 records, withdrawal receipts and account statements together.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming maturity means automatic closure: the matured account may be retained under the scheme.
- Calculating maturity from the opening anniversary: the scheme uses 15 complete financial years from the end of the opening financial year.
- Making several withdrawals in one year: the no-deposit rule allows one withdrawal in each year.
- Waiting more than a year and then filing Form-4: the with-deposit election is not available after the account has remained in no-deposit mode for more than a year.
- Depositing first and checking later: late deposits without a valid election are irregular and must be refunded without interest.
- Quoting a fixed PPF rate indefinitely: the applicable small-savings rate is published periodically and should be checked for the period concerned.
- Treating a general tax statement as personal advice: the NSI description is general; individual circumstances can require separate advice.
Bottom line for an account holder
Leaving PPF money in the account after maturity is permitted and does not stop the balance from earning the applicable PPF interest. The no-deposit mode lets you keep the account open and make one withdrawal in each year. If you want the full balance, use Form-3 for closure. If you want to continue contributing, use Form-4 within one year of maturity; after that window, further deposits can be irregular and refundable without interest. Confirm the maturity date from your account record, make the election that matches your objective, and verify the current official interest notice before projecting returns.
