Claiming Social Security retirement benefits before your full retirement age (FRA) starts checks sooner but permanently lowers the age-based monthly amount. Waiting past FRA raises the worker benefit with delayed retirement credits until age 70, when increases stop. Your birth year, earnings record, work plans, Medicare timing, and family-benefit rules determine how those choices apply to you.
FRA is not one age for everyone. Use the Social Security Administration’s birth-year chart and your personal estimate before choosing a start month.

What changes when you claim before, at, or after full retirement age?
Social Security retirement benefits can start as early as age 62. If you begin before your FRA, the administration reduces your worker retirement benefit for each month you claim early. The reduction is based on your birth year and the number of months between your start date and FRA; it is an age-based reduction, not a temporary penalty.
At FRA, you receive your unreduced worker retirement benefit under the program’s age rules. If you delay after FRA, delayed retirement credits increase that monthly worker benefit for each month of delay, but only through age 70. The check arrives for fewer months while you wait, so the practical choice is a trade-off between payment size, timing, health, income needs, and family circumstances rather than a universally best age.

| Claiming point | Monthly worker benefit | When payments begin | Work-earnings rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Before FRA | Reduced for each month claimed early; the percentage depends on birth year and start month. | As early as age 62. | If you are below FRA, annual earnings limits can cause temporary withholding. |
| At FRA | Unreduced age-based worker benefit. | At the month you select, subject to application processing. | Starting with the month you reach FRA, earnings do not reduce benefits. |
| After FRA, before age 70 | Higher through delayed retirement credits. | Later than FRA. | No earnings-test reduction once FRA is reached. |
| Age 70 or later | No additional delayed-credit increase after age 70. | At or after age 70. | Earnings do not reduce benefits because you are past FRA. |
The administration’s overview of claiming before FRA explains the timing trade-off, while its retirement-age and reduction chart supplies the birth-year-specific percentages.
Find your full retirement age first
FRA is tied to your year of birth. Do not assume that an age you have heard from a friend or seen in an older article applies to you. The SSA chart lists the applicable FRA for each birth-year group and shows the approximate reduction for a claim at 62 using a $1,000 FRA benefit as an illustration. That $1,000 figure is an example, not a typical or personal benefit, and the chart percentages are rounded.
Your actual amount depends on both your birth year and your earnings record. The start month matters too: claiming one month earlier or later changes the number of months used in the reduction calculation. Check the row for your birth year, then use your individual SSA estimate to translate the percentage into dollars.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy the birth-year chart matters
- It prevents applying the wrong FRA or reduction percentage to your claim.
- It shows that “claiming at 62” does not produce one standard reduction for every worker.
- It distinguishes the worker-retirement FRA from other program ages, including survivor-benefit rules.
The same SSA chart also notes that personal circumstances matter. It does not designate a single best claiming age or provide a universal break-even age, because those outcomes depend on lifespan, cash-flow needs, other income, and family eligibility.
How an early claim changes your payment
When you claim before FRA, SSA applies a permanent age-based reduction to the worker retirement amount. You receive checks for more months, but each check is smaller than it would have been at FRA. The reduction remains part of the benefit calculation; it is different from benefits that may be withheld temporarily under the earnings test.

Early filing can provide income when you stop work, cover essential expenses, or preserve other assets. It can also be reasonable for someone who needs cash now or who places a higher value on receiving benefits earlier. Those are personal decisions, not conclusions that can be drawn from the age-reduction table alone.
Early claiming and work are separate decisions
You can stop working and delay benefits, continue working and claim, or stop working and claim. Filing age does not determine when you must leave a job. If you work while claiming before FRA, the earnings test may withhold some benefits; SSA later adjusts your benefit for months affected by excess-earnings withholding.
How delaying after FRA raises the benefit
Delayed retirement credits apply after FRA and stop at age 70. For people born in 1943 or later, SSA lists an 8% increase for each 12 months of delay, equivalent to two-thirds of 1% for each month. People born earlier have different, cohort-specific rates in the administration’s delayed-retirement-credit table.
There is no additional delayed-credit increase for waiting beyond age 70. SSA states: “The benefit increase stops when you reach age 70.” If you are eligible but have not filed by then, delaying further does not raise the worker retirement amount through this credit.
What the 8% figure does and does not mean
The 8% rate is an annual delayed-credit rate for the specified birth cohorts, not an 8% return on every dollar you could have collected earlier. Waiting also means giving up months of payments before your filing date. Your own comparison must use your SSA estimates at the specific start months you are considering.

Medicare does not automatically wait with retirement benefits
Delaying Social Security retirement benefits past 65 is a separate decision from enrolling in Medicare. SSA warns that failing to enroll when required can delay coverage and increase costs in some circumstances. Review Medicare enrollment timing even if you plan to postpone your retirement application; the SSA delayed-credit guidance includes this reminder.

SSA generally calculates retirement benefits from your highest 35 years of earnings. If you have fewer than 35 years with earnings, years without earnings can enter the calculation as zeros. Continuing to work can improve the eventual benefit when a new, higher-earning year replaces a lower or zero year.
That means “when should I claim?” and “when should I stop working?” are separate questions. A person who delays filing but continues working may improve the earnings record as well as earn delayed credits. A person who claims early may still add earnings years, but the early age-based reduction remains part of the benefit calculation.
Use the SSA explanation of retirement age and stopping work to see how additional earnings can affect the 35-year computation. Your personal earnings history, not a generic salary example, is needed for a dollar estimate.
Working while collecting before FRA: the 2026 earnings test
If you are below FRA for the entire calendar year, SSA applies an annual earnings limit. For 2026, the limit is $24,480, and SSA withholds $1 in benefits for every $2 of earnings above that amount. This is a 2026 figure; limits are updated for later years.

In the calendar year you reach FRA, a different limit applies to earnings received before the month you reach FRA. For 2026, that limit is $65,160, and SSA withholds $1 for every $3 above it. Beginning with the month you reach FRA, earnings do not reduce your benefits regardless of how much you earn. SSA’s January 2, 2026 FAQ puts the rule this way: “Starting with the month you reach full retirement age, we will not reduce your benefits no matter how much you earn.” See SSA’s work-and-benefits FAQ and the 2026 COLA fact sheet for the published thresholds.
Withheld is not the same as permanently lost
When the earnings test causes SSA to withhold payments, do not treat every withheld dollar as a permanent age reduction. SSA recalculates your benefit at FRA to credit months in which payments were reduced or withheld because earnings exceeded the limit. That adjustment is separate from the permanent reduction for filing early.
The earnings test uses wages and other earnings covered by SSA’s rules, not simply whether you have a job. Report expected earnings accurately and update SSA if your work or pay changes. The receiving-benefits-while-working guidance describes withholding and the later adjustment.

A useful comparison starts with the exact start months and your SSA estimates, then tests the circumstances that can make one timing more practical than another.
Monthly income versus months of payments
An early claim produces income sooner and for more months, with a lower monthly amount. Delaying produces no retirement checks during the waiting period but a higher monthly amount afterward. Do not use a generic break-even age as a guarantee; the result changes with your birth date, estimates, start months, and how long benefits are received.

Health, longevity, and cash needs
Consider whether you need Social Security to meet current expenses, whether you have other income or savings, and how valuable a larger inflation-adjusted lifetime payment would be if you live into older age. These are planning inputs, not predictions. The SSA comparison page on working, applying, or doing both lays out the program choices without selecting an age for you.
Work plans
If you expect substantial earnings before FRA, include the applicable earnings-test limit and the possibility of temporary withholding. If you continue working after FRA, the earnings test no longer reduces benefits, and additional high-earning years may replace lower years in your 35-year record.
Spouse and survivor effects
Claiming decisions can affect an eligible spouse’s benefits and the amount available to a survivor. A person eligible for both a retirement benefit and a spousal benefit may be subject to deemed-filing rules; filing circumstances and birth date matter. Do not assume you can freely claim one benefit while delaying the other. Review SSA’s filing rules for retirement and spouse benefits.

A practical process for choosing a start month
- Confirm your birth-year FRA. Use SSA’s retirement-age chart, not a rule of thumb.
- List the exact start months. Compare age 62, your FRA month, and one or more dates after FRA up to age 70; a one-month difference can change the reduction or credit.
- Pull your personal estimates. Use your SSA record and earnings history. A $1,000 figure from the chart is only an illustration.
- Check the 35-year record. Identify zero or low-earning years that continued work might replace.
- Model work earnings. If you will be under FRA while collecting, apply the current year’s earnings-test limit and withholding rate. Refresh the figures when the calendar year changes.
- Separate Medicare enrollment. Decide when to enroll in Medicare independently of when you file for retirement benefits.
- Review family claims. Check deemed-filing, spousal, and survivor rules before assuming a strategy works for both partners.
- Recheck the plan before filing. Confirm the current rules and your estimate with SSA because annual limits and your earnings record can change.
What cannot be answered from a generic example
No article can state your exact dollar difference between two claiming ages without your birth date, earnings record, and intended start months. The administration’s online tools and your Social Security statement provide the individualized figures needed for that comparison. Program rules also change by calendar year, as shown by the 2026 earnings limits, so an older example may not be current.
For retirement benefits, the central distinction is straightforward: claiming before FRA permanently lowers the age-based monthly amount but provides checks sooner; delaying after FRA raises the monthly worker benefit through age 70 but gives up payments during the delay. Your FRA row, earnings record, work income, Medicare enrollment, and family-benefit rules determine which timing fits your situation.
