If a tokenized-asset platform goes offline, you may lose access to its app, market, custody records, transfers, or redemption process. If the blockchain itself stops operating, transactions may not confirm and a distributed-ledger register may be unavailable. Neither event automatically proves that your legal claim has disappeared—or that it is fully protected.
Your position depends on the token’s legal structure, who holds the underlying asset and keys, how the register is maintained, the issuer’s continuity arrangements, insolvency rules, and the governing law. Treat an outage first as an access and settlement emergency, then establish what right the token actually represents.

Platform outage and blockchain outage are different failures
A platform is the company-operated layer: its website, mobile app, trading venue, custody system, customer support, and redemption workflow. A blockchain is the network that records and confirms transactions. They are separate dependencies.

A platform can fail while the network remains live, or the platform can remain online while the chain cannot process transactions. Custody, access, transaction processing, and legal entitlement therefore have to be checked separately. ESMA’s July 2026 supervisory priorities for crypto-asset custody identify governance, key and storage management, transaction controls, incident response, smart-contract risk, and third-party providers as distinct control areas.

Does an outage destroy ownership?
No automatic rule answers that question. A blank screen, frozen market, or halted blockchain says what service is unavailable; it does not by itself decide what legal right you hold. Read the token’s offering terms, custody agreement, trust or fund documents, and governing-law clause.
Investor.gov describes three broad structures for tokenized securities. They can look similar in a wallet but create materially different rights.
Issuer-sponsored token
The issuer itself sponsors the token and records the holder’s interest. Your rights may be directly against that issuer under the instrument’s terms. An outage can still prevent you from viewing the register or transferring the token, but the legal claim may be evidenced by issuer records, contractual documents, or a recoverable register rather than by the app alone.
Custodial tokenized interest
A securities intermediary or custodian holds the underlying security, while the token represents an entitlement recorded through that arrangement. The important questions are whether client assets are segregated, who is the registered owner, how beneficial interests are recorded, and what happens if the intermediary becomes insolvent. A platform outage does not tell you whether the underlying security is still held; the custody agreement and applicable insolvency law do.

Synthetic or linked token
A synthetic token can provide price exposure to a referenced security without giving you rights against that security’s issuer. Its value and redemption depend on the token contract, collateral or counterparty arrangements, and the issuer’s ability to perform. Possessing a token that tracks an asset is therefore not the same as owning that asset.
The SEC staff’s investor-education material says tokenized securities remain securities under the interpretation it describes, while clarifying that the page is staff educational material rather than a Commission rule or statement. The classification does not make every token identical: the claim, intermediary chain, and remedies still come from the specific instrument and jurisdiction.
What a blockchain outage can prevent
The FCA warns that a DLT interruption may stop a manager, unitholders, or the responsible firm from inspecting the register. Holders may be unable to effect or instruct transactions. Even if the asset and legal claim remain intact, the operational path for selling, transferring, subscribing, or redeeming can be closed.
- Confirmation: a submitted transaction may remain pending because validators or the network are not confirming blocks.
- Register access: the authoritative DLT record may be unreadable or unavailable to the parties that must rely on it.
- Settlement: a trade can be agreed commercially but fail to settle until the ledger resumes or an approved alternative is used.
- Corporate actions: distributions, redemptions, or changes to investor records may be delayed if they require a functioning smart contract or ledger.
- Instructions: a platform may accept an instruction but be unable to complete it; ask for a written status rather than assuming acceptance equals execution.
A hardware wallet does not repair any of these dependencies. It can protect a private key under your control, but it cannot restart a blockchain, restore an issuer’s platform, recreate a missing register, or guarantee redemption of a synthetic or custodial instrument.

Continuity arrangements that can protect holders
UK authorized-fund context
For authorized UK funds using DLT, the FCA expects firms to include outage risks in their risk policies and maintain resilience plans. Alternative processes should allow holders to buy, sell, or transfer units, potentially through fiat or off-chain procedures while the network is unavailable.
The responsible firm should also be capable of making unilateral register changes, such as reversing an incorrect entry or creating a new one. FCA guidance points to systems that combine on-chain and off-chain records when DLT alone cannot satisfy regulatory or operational requirements. That recovery capability matters if the chain records an error, becomes inaccessible, or cannot support a legally required correction.
In exceptional circumstances where a DLT network is unavailable for an extended period, the authorized fund manager and depositary should have procedures to wind up the fund, realize its assets, and distribute proceeds proportionately to investors’ interests. This is a UK authorized-fund rulebook context—not a universal promise for every cryptoasset, token issuer, or marketplace.

MiCA Article 34 requires issuers of EU asset-referenced tokens to support continued and regular performance of services, identify and mitigate operational risks, and maintain continuity plans. Those plans must preserve essential data and functions or provide timely recovery and resumption after an ICT interruption. The article also requires attention to third-party dependencies and related contracts. These obligations apply to the specified MiCA category; they should not be generalized to every token type or jurisdiction.

Why third parties matter
Your token may depend on a chain operator, cloud provider, custodian, oracle, transfer agent, broker, or redemption bank. ESMA’s custody priorities expressly include third-party providers. A platform can advertise continuity while a critical vendor remains a single point of failure, so identify each dependency in the documents rather than relying on a general uptime statement.

Possibly, but never assume it. The answer turns on which layer failed and what the terms permit.
If only the platform is offline
The chain might still process transactions, but you may have no authorized interface, customer authentication, order routing, or redemption channel. Do not send funds or tokens to an unverified replacement address. Preserve evidence of your balance and instructions, then use the issuer’s published incident channel or registered custodian contact.

A platform may remain reachable but be unable to settle or update the register. Check whether the issuer has an approved off-chain or fiat process, whether orders are queued or cancelled, and which timestamp determines your price or entitlement. A promise to “process later” is not the same as a completed transaction.

If the issuer or custodian is insolvent
Recovery depends on the token structure and insolvency treatment. Segregated client assets, a direct issuer claim, a trust arrangement, or a synthetic counterparty obligation can lead to very different outcomes. A blockchain’s return to service cannot cure an issuer’s insolvency or create rights that the instrument never granted.
What to do when an outage occurs
- Confirm the scope. Check the issuer’s official status notice, the network’s own incident information, and any regulated custodian notice. Distinguish a login problem from a chain halt or a scheduled maintenance window.
- Stop irreversible actions. Do not approve new smart-contract transactions, share seed phrases, or follow unsolicited “recovery” instructions. An outage creates a high-risk environment for impersonation scams.
- Capture records. Save statements, wallet addresses, transaction hashes, screenshots, confirmations, offering documents, custody terms, and every support ticket. Record the date and time in UTC.
- Ask precise questions in writing. Ask whether the register is accessible, whether your assets are segregated, whether your instruction was accepted or settled, what alternative process exists, and what event ends the contingency procedure.
- Check the legal documents. Find the governing law, redemption conditions, suspension powers, transfer restrictions, insolvency provisions, and any clause describing a network failure or force-majeure event.
- Escalate appropriately. Use the firm’s complaints process and the relevant financial regulator or ombudsman route where available. For a material holding, obtain advice from a lawyer familiar with the asset’s jurisdiction and structure.
- Verify recovery before acting. When service returns, compare the restored balance and register entry with your saved evidence. Check whether pending transactions were executed, reversed, or rejected before submitting anything again.
How to evaluate an asset before buying it
Ask these questions while the platform is functioning, and keep the answers with your records:
- Is the token issuer-sponsored, a custodial interest, or synthetic exposure?
- Who legally owns the underlying asset, and where is it held?
- Who controls the register? Is there an independent or off-chain copy?
- Who holds the private keys, and are client assets and records segregated?
- Can the responsible firm correct, reverse, or create register entries if the DLT fails?
- Is there a tested service-transfer, redemption, off-chain, fiat, or wind-up plan?
- Which law governs the token, custody relationship, and insolvency process?
- What exactly can you claim: the underlying asset, a contractual payment, a fund unit, or only a reference price?
- What are the suspension triggers, notice obligations, and expected recovery steps?
“Blockchain-based” is not a substitute for answers to these questions. The quality of the recovery design depends on the legal and operational architecture around the chain.

Why the wider market context matters
On 30 April 2026, the FCA said roughly 2,600 UK asset-management firms managed £16.5 trillion for UK and global clients. That figure describes the scale of the sector; it is not a measure of tokenization adoption or outage frequency. The same announcement quoted FCA executive director of markets Simon Walls: “Tokenisation has the potential to play an important role in asset management, and its adoption will be driven by firms and investors. We have focused on delivering what the market has asked for: a clear, practical framework that provides confidence in how fund tokenisation can operate within our rules, both now and into the future.”
For an individual holder, the practical lesson is narrower: resilience should be assessed at every layer. A functioning chain cannot compensate for a failed custodian, and a live platform cannot force a halted network to confirm a transaction. Your recovery prospects come from the instrument’s documented rights, the records maintained outside the failed component, and the regulated procedures that apply in the relevant jurisdiction.
