In the United States, the principal federal support for survivors of a police officer who dies in the line of duty is the Public Safety Officers’ Benefits (PSOB) program, administered by the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) in the U.S. Department of Justice. A qualifying family may receive a one-time death payment and, for an eligible spouse or child, monthly educational assistance. Eligibility is determined under federal law and requires a claim review; employment as a police officer alone does not guarantee payment. State, local, pension, employer, union and insurance benefits may also apply, but those depend on the officer’s jurisdiction and employment arrangements.
The federal benefits families should check first
PSOB is the nationwide federal program for survivors of eligible public-safety officers, including law-enforcement officers. It has two financially distinct components: a lump-sum death benefit and education assistance. The BJA reviews each claim under the PSOB Act, regulations and supporting evidence. The cause of death, the officer’s statutory role, line-of-duty facts and the family member’s status all matter.

| Benefit | Who may receive it | Amount and date basis | Payment form | Administrator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PSOB death benefit | Eligible survivors of an officer whose death meets the federal line-of-duty standard | $477,336.00 for qualifying deaths from October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027 (FY 2027); $461,656 applied for FY 2026 deaths from October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026 | One-time payment | Bureau of Justice Assistance, U.S. Department of Justice |
| PSOB educational assistance | Eligible spouses and children of officers who died or were catastrophically injured in the line of duty, subject to program education rules | $1,621.00 for one month of full-time assistance beginning on or after October 1, 2026 | Monthly educational assistance, not a lump sum | Bureau of Justice Assistance, U.S. Department of Justice |
| State, local, pension, employer, union or insurance benefits | Depends on the jurisdiction, plan terms, employment status and policy language | Not stated federally; amounts and formulas vary | May be a pension, insurance proceeds, reimbursement, grant or other payment | Relevant state or local agency, retirement system, employer, union or insurer |
The fiscal-year date is attached to the federal death-benefit amount. A family should identify the date of death before relying on a figure, because the amount can change when a new federal fiscal-year schedule takes effect. The education figure is a monthly full-time rate, so the total depends on the months and coursework for which the student is approved.
When a police-officer death qualifies for PSOB
The line-of-duty causation test
PSOB’s fact sheet describes the death as needing to be the direct result of an injury sustained in the line of duty. The program examines the circumstances, the officer’s qualifying status and the documentation submitted with the application. A death occurring while the person was employed by a police agency is not automatically a covered death. Families should preserve incident, medical and employment records rather than assume that an agency payroll record is enough.

Eligible survivors and education beneficiaries
The death payment is made to survivors who satisfy the statutory order and definitions. PSOB also separately evaluates whether a spouse or child qualifies for educational assistance. Education eligibility can involve the relationship to the officer, the type and timing of the program of study, enrollment status and other PSOB rules. A person should confirm those details with PSOB before committing to a course schedule based on expected assistance.
Catastrophic-injury cases
Educational assistance is not limited to death claims. PSOB identifies education support for eligible spouses and children of officers who were catastrophically injured in the line of duty as well. That category has its own eligibility determination; it should not be treated as an automatic extension of every disability or workers’ compensation claim.
Special rule for certain cancer-related deaths
A statutory expansion can affect some law-enforcement cancer cases. The BJA’s PSOB Law & Regulations page reports that the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2026, signed December 18, 2025, included Section 8205, “Honoring Our Fallen Heroes,” which amended the PSOB Act. The amendment creates a presumption for certain listed cancers when all required conditions are met.

- Evidence must show that a line-of-duty action or activity exposed the officer to a listed carcinogen.
- The officer must have completed at least five years of service before the diagnosis.
- The officer must have left service fewer than 15 years before the diagnosis, where that condition applies.
- The listed cancer must have caused the death or permanent total disability relevant to the claim.
- The presumption applies to qualifying deaths from listed cancers on or after January 1, 2020, according to the BJA page.
This is not a blanket rule covering every occupational cancer. The cancer, exposure, service history, timing and medical causation still have to fit the statute, and the claimant must provide supporting evidence. Families dealing with a cancer death should identify the specific cancer and exposure history in the claim and ask PSOB how the amended criteria apply.
Other financial sources a family may have
PSOB is the federal baseline, not a complete inventory of what a particular family might receive. Additional programs are controlled by the officer’s state, municipality, agency, retirement system, collective-bargaining agreement, insurance policies and employment records. Because those rules differ, a national dollar amount would be misleading.
| Possible source | Typical eligibility trigger | Possible form of help | Where to start |
|---|---|---|---|
| State or municipal survivor program | Qualifying line-of-duty death under state or local law | May include a separate lump sum, tuition support, health coverage or other assistance | State public-safety benefits office, city or county human-resources or risk-management office |
| Police pension or retirement system | Membership and service records, plus the plan’s survivor provisions | Monthly survivor pension, refund of contributions or other plan benefit | Retirement-system claims unit or plan administrator |
| Employer-provided life insurance | Active coverage and policy terms at the time of death | Insurance proceeds, sometimes with separate accidental-death coverage | Agency benefits office and the insurer named in the policy |
| Workers’ compensation or occupational-disease program | State-specific employment and causation rules | Medical, wage-replacement or survivor payments | Agency workers’ compensation administrator or state board |
| Union or association assistance | Membership rules and any negotiated survivor provision | Grant, emergency assistance, memorial fund or negotiated benefit | Union representative or association benefits contact |
These sources can have different definitions of “line of duty,” different filing deadlines and coordination rules. Receiving a PSOB payment does not by itself establish entitlement under a pension, insurance policy or state statute. Ask each administrator how its benefit interacts with other payments before signing a settlement or waiver.

How to apply for PSOB benefits
New PSOB applications and claims are filed through the program’s official online claims portal. Use the current PSOB website rather than an unsolicited link, and keep a complete copy of every submission.
- Identify the claim type. Determine whether the application concerns a death benefit, educational assistance, catastrophic injury or a cancer-related eligibility issue. The claim type controls the evidence and forms requested.
- Notify the employing agency and preserve records. Ask the agency for its PSOB contact, incident reports, duty and training records, personnel file information, medical documentation and any internal line-of-duty determination. Keep originals and submit copies unless PSOB instructs otherwise.
- Open the online claim. Enter the survivor, officer and agency information exactly as shown on official records. Inconsistent names, dates or identification numbers can create avoidable follow-up requests.
- Describe the duty event and medical causation. Explain what happened, when it happened, the duty assignment, the injury or exposure and how the death or qualifying condition resulted. For cancer claims, identify the listed cancer and the evidence of carcinogen exposure.
- Upload supporting evidence. Provide the documents PSOB requests, which may include death certificates, medical and autopsy records, exposure or incident reports, employment and service records, marriage or birth records and proof of education enrollment. The exact list depends on the facts.
- Track requests and deadlines. Respond promptly to PSOB notices, document every contact and keep confirmation numbers. If a document is unavailable, explain why and ask what substitute evidence is acceptable rather than leaving the request unanswered.
- Get case-specific help. The PSOB Customer Resource Center page lists 1-888-744-6513 and [email protected]; verify the current contact details on the official page before using them. Ask about eligibility questions, missing documents and the status of an existing claim.
Documents and information to assemble
- Certified death certificate and, when applicable, autopsy or medical examiner records.
- Official incident, crash, use-of-force, fire or exposure reports describing the duty event.
- Agency records confirming appointment, qualifying position, dates of service and duty status.
- Medical records connecting the line-of-duty injury, illness or listed cancer to the death or qualifying disability.
- For a cancer claim, exposure evidence, carcinogen information, diagnosis date, service history and separation date.
- Marriage, birth, adoption or other records establishing the relationship of each survivor or education applicant.
- For education assistance, the school’s enrollment certification, program details and attendance dates requested by PSOB.
- Payment and contact information submitted only through the secure official claim process.
Do not send more personal information than the official process requests. Store copies securely because the file can contain identity, medical and financial records.

Assuming the agency’s conclusion is the federal decision
An agency may classify an event as line-of-duty for internal purposes, but PSOB applies its own statutory review. Submit the underlying records and explain the causal chain instead of relying only on a departmental label.

Using the wrong fiscal-year amount
Death-benefit schedules are tied to the date range published by BJA. Check the applicable fiscal year before budgeting, distributing an estate or comparing a federal payment with a state benefit.
Treating education assistance as an immediate cash award
Educational assistance is paid by month of approved full-time study. Confirm eligibility, enrollment and the school’s certification requirements before assuming that the full annual cost will be reimbursed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSubmitting an incomplete cancer claim
The cancer presumption requires more than a diagnosis. A claimant must address the listed cancer, qualifying exposure, service duration, separation timing and causation. Missing one element can lead to additional questions or an adverse determination.

Ignoring other filing deadlines
State pensions, workers’ compensation, insurance and union programs can have separate notice and application deadlines. Start those inquiries at the same time as the PSOB claim, even if the federal review is still pending.
Protecting the family from benefit scams
PSOB warns about imposters who claim to represent BJA and ask for personally identifying information, financial-account details or money. A legitimate request should be verified through the current official PSOB contact page or the secure claims portal. Do not pay a person who promises to unlock a federal benefit, and do not transfer funds in response to an unexpected email, text or call.
Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) is identified by PSOB as a collaborator providing peer support, counseling and assistance during claims review. Support services do not replace the federal application, so keep the claim moving while using counseling or peer assistance.

A practical order for the first 30 days
- Obtain several certified copies of the death certificate and ask the agency for its PSOB liaison.
- Open the PSOB claim and create a secure folder for every upload, notice and confirmation.
- Request pension, insurance, workers’ compensation, state and local survivor-program forms separately.
- List every potential survivor and education applicant, including school-age children and a spouse considering future enrollment.
- Build a calendar of federal and nonfederal deadlines, medical-record requests and school-certification dates.
- Verify any caller or email sender through official contact details before sharing data or money.
Families often need both immediate cash-flow planning and long-term income planning. The one-time federal payment may help with funeral costs, housing, debt or an emergency reserve, while a pension or education benefit may arrive under a different schedule. A fiduciary adviser or attorney familiar with survivor benefits can help coordinate decisions, but professional assistance is not a substitute for confirming the rules with each administrator.
What cannot be determined without the officer’s jurisdiction
No single national answer exists for the total package a surviving family will receive. The federal PSOB figures above are established for their stated dates, but a city pension, state line-of-duty award, employer policy, union contract and private insurance policy may add benefits, reduce benefits or impose different conditions. To calculate a family’s complete entitlement, the relevant agency, state, retirement plan and insurance documents must be reviewed individually.
