FII/FPI and DII data shows how much institutional investors bought and sold in a defined market segment, and whether buying or selling was larger. Net buying is calculated as buy value minus sell value: a positive number means purchases exceeded sales, while a negative number means sales exceeded purchases. These flows can influence liquidity and short-term pricing in the Nifty and Sensex, but they are not standalone forecasts or automatic buy and sell signals.
To use the figures properly, first check the report date, market coverage, segment and provisional status. Then read buy, sell and net values together, compare several sessions, and test the flow story against index breadth, sector leadership, earnings, interest rates, currency moves, volatility and derivatives positioning.

What FII and DII figures actually measure
Daily institutional-flow tables are activity summaries. They report the rupee value of purchases, the rupee value of sales and the resulting net value for the scope named in the report.

- Positive net value: the reported group bought more than it sold in that table.
- Negative net value: the group sold more than it bought.
- Zero or near-zero net value: buying and selling were broadly balanced, even though gross turnover could still be large.
A net figure is therefore a balance, not a complete description of trading. Two days with the same net selling can have very different buy and sell totals, stock selection and market impact. Always retain the gross values and the report scope when comparing sessions.

FII/FPI and DII: what the labels imply
FII is the older market label for foreign institutional investors; current regulatory and exchange usage commonly refers to foreign portfolio investors (FPIs). DII means domestic institutional investors. The categories describe the investor’s domicile and reporting classification, not a promise that every member has the same strategy, holding period or risk tolerance.
| Comparison point | FII/FPI activity | DII activity | How an investor should use the distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Geography and mandate | Capital managed for investors outside India, subject to the applicable foreign-investor rules and mandates. | Capital managed by institutions based in India, under domestic mandates and regulations. | Geography helps explain sensitivity to different news, but it does not identify the reason for an individual trade. |
| Main influences | Global risk appetite, overseas interest rates, currency changes, valuations and reallocations between countries can matter alongside Indian fundamentals. | Domestic subscriptions and redemptions, local policy, domestic earnings and asset-allocation decisions can matter alongside global conditions. | Treat these as possible drivers, not a fixed cause-and-effect rule. |
| Time horizon | May include short-term, tactical and long-term mandates. | May include short-term, tactical and long-term mandates. | Do not label one group as inherently smarter or more patient. |
| Stock and sector concentration | Net selling can coexist with buying in selected index constituents or sectors. | Net buying can coexist with selling in other sectors or stocks. | Net totals cannot reveal breadth or concentration without stock-level data. |
| Reported market scope | The table may cover cash-market trades or another stated segment. | The table may cover cash-market trades or another stated segment. | Compare like with like; a cash-market number should not be treated as a complete derivatives-positioning measure. |
| Interaction | Foreign selling can add supply at the margin. | Domestic buying can absorb part of that supply, depending on timing, liquidity and stock selection. | Absorption can cushion an index, but it does not guarantee a rise. |
What the official reports include—and what they leave out
The National Stock Exchange publishes an NSE capital-market report and a combined report covering trades executed across BSE, NSE and MSEI. The combined report is collated from FII/FPI and DII trades on those exchanges. NSE says FII/FPI activity is compiled from PANs supplied by NSDL.
The exchange also cautions: “This trade data is provisional and subject to change, inter-alia, on account of custodial confirmation process, modifications etc.” A late-day number can therefore change after custodial confirmation or other corrections. Record the publication date and revisit the figure before relying on it in a longer-term analysis.

The report is an activity total, not an explanation of investor intent. By itself it does not tell you:
- which individual stocks were bought or sold;
- whether a transaction opened a new position, closed an old one or rebalanced an existing portfolio;
- whether a cash trade was paired with a hedge;
- the investor’s time horizon;
- the split between cash, futures and other instruments unless the selected report explicitly states that scope; or
- whether the flow was broad-based or concentrated in a few large constituents.
How to read a daily FII/DII table step by step
- Confirm the date. Match the flow date with the trading session you are analysing. A report published after the close can refer to the prior session.
- Check geography and exchange coverage. Note whether the table is NSE-only or the combined BSE, NSE and MSEI report. Do not compare an NSE-only series with a combined series as if they were identical.
- Check the segment label. Identify whether the figures are for the cash market or another segment. Keep separate series separate in your spreadsheet.
- Read buy and sell values before net. Calculate or verify net value as buy minus sell. Large gross turnover with a small net can indicate substantial two-way activity.
- Mark provisional observations. Treat the first publication as provisional until custodial and exchange revisions settle. Preserve the original number and the revised number if you maintain a historical database.
- Compare a run of sessions. A five-session view can show an immediate shift; a 20-session view can show whether the move is persistent. Neither window is a law, so choose one that matches your investment horizon.
- Cross-check the market response. Compare the flow trend with Nifty and Sensex returns, advance-decline breadth, volume, sector leadership, volatility, the rupee, interest rates, index futures, earnings announcements and major macroeconomic news.
How institutional flows can affect Nifty and Sensex
Institutional orders can affect demand and marginal pricing, especially in liquid index constituents. If a large seller meets insufficient immediate demand, prices can move lower; if buying demand overwhelms available supply, prices can move higher. Index weights mean activity in a small number of large constituents can influence an index more than an equal-value trade in a small company.
That mechanism does not make flows a deterministic index forecast. NSE describes indices as measures that “reflect the changing expectations of the stock market about future dividends of India’s corporate sector.” Expectations about earnings and future dividends can change because of interest rates, inflation, policy, commodity prices, currency moves, global risk appetite, valuation, sector rotation and company-specific news. Retail activity and derivatives positioning can also offset or amplify institutional cash flows.

For that reason, a positive institutional net total can accompany a falling index when other sellers dominate or when the buying is concentrated outside index leaders. A negative total can accompany a rising index when the selling is concentrated in weaker stocks while investors buy heavily weighted constituents, or when news improves expectations faster than the reported selling affects prices.
When FII and DII flows move in opposite directions
FIIs/FPIs sell while DIIs buy
Domestic demand may absorb part of the foreign supply and help an index remain resilient. The outcome depends on order timing, liquidity, stock selection, derivatives hedges and other news. Absorption can reduce the immediate price effect of foreign selling; it cannot guarantee that Nifty or Sensex will rise.
Both groups buy
Simultaneous net buying can reinforce demand, but check whether it is broad across index constituents and sectors. If both groups buy a narrow group of stocks, the headline totals may look strong while market breadth remains weak. Also verify that both figures cover the same cash-market scope.
Both groups sell
Two-sided institutional selling can increase downside pressure, particularly when liquidity is thin or risk aversion is rising. It still does not prove that flows caused a decline: disappointing earnings, a rate shock or a global sell-off may be the common reason for both the selling and the index move.
FIIs/FPIs buy while DIIs sell
This pattern can reflect domestic profit-taking alongside foreign accumulation, sector rotation or differences in portfolio construction. Examine which sectors lead, whether index futures agree with cash activity and whether the apparent disagreement persists beyond one session.

| Group | Net value in the combined report | What can be concluded | What cannot be concluded |
|---|---|---|---|
| DII | +₹2,124.14 crore | Reported DII buying exceeded selling for that report scope and date. | That DIIs bought every sector, or that the index had to rise. |
| FII/FPI | −₹542.71 crore | Reported FII/FPI selling exceeded buying for that report scope and date. | That foreign investors were uniformly bearish or that selling caused the day’s index move. |
Use the example as a reading exercise, not as a trading rule. The report is provisional when first published, and the table does not reveal the stocks, instruments, hedges or timing behind either net number.
Recent scale of domestic institutional participation
SEBI reported DII net inflows of ₹69,301 crore during January 2026. It also reported cumulative DII net inflows of ₹6.9 lakh crore during the first ten months of financial year 2025–26, and DII ownership equal to 18.4% of the market capitalisation of NSE-listed companies at the end of December 2025.
| Measure | Reported figure | Period or reference date | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| DII net inflow | ₹69,301 crore | January 2026 | A monthly aggregate; it does not describe every trading day or sector. |
| Cumulative DII net inflow | ₹6.9 lakh crore | First ten months of FY26 | A financial-year-to-date total; it is not a forecast for the remaining months. |
| DII share of market capitalisation | 18.4% | End-December 2025, NSE-listed companies | An ownership snapshot, not a measure of daily buying pressure. |
SEBI’s figures help explain why domestic institutions can act as a meaningful counterweight during sustained foreign outflows. They do not remove the need to check valuation, breadth, sector exposure or the exact exchange report used for a daily comparison.
Is FII/DII data a reliable buy or sell signal?
It is useful as context for liquidity, sentiment and positioning, but unreliable as a mechanical trigger. Reliability improves when several conditions hold:
- the exchange scope and segment are identical across the dates being compared;
- the figures have been checked for later revisions;
- the trend persists over multiple sessions rather than appearing on one volatile day;
- the flow direction agrees with breadth, volume and leadership from major index constituents; and
- earnings, rates, currency and global-market conditions do not point sharply in the opposite direction.
Reliability falls when a number is provisional, when the series mixes NSE-only and combined reports, when gross values are ignored, when a narrow sector dominates the total, or when cash flows are interpreted as a complete measure of derivatives exposure. No cited rule establishes that FII buying makes Nifty rise or FII selling makes Sensex fall.
A practical workflow for investors
For a daily review
- Save the official report with its date, title and segment label.
- Enter buy, sell and net values separately for each group.
- Flag the row as provisional until revisions are available.
- Record Nifty and Sensex close, daily range, advance-decline breadth, volume and leading sectors.
- Note major earnings, policy announcements, rate decisions, currency moves and global-market shocks.
- Write a one-sentence interpretation that distinguishes observation from inference, such as: “DIIs were net buyers in the combined cash report while FPIs were net sellers; the index held up as financial shares led.”
For a weekly or monthly review
- Calculate five-session and 20-session cumulative net flows.
- Separate persistent buying from one-day reversals.
- Check whether flows are broad or concentrated in a few sectors and index constituents.
- Compare cash activity with index-futures positioning and volatility indicators where those data are available.
- Reassess whether the flow trend supports, contradicts or merely accompanies your earnings and valuation thesis.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using net value without buy and sell totals
Problem: A small net can hide very large two-way turnover, while a large net can come from relatively light activity in a thin market.

Correction: Keep the gross buy and sell columns and inspect liquidity and volume.
Mixing report scopes
Problem: An NSE-only number and a combined BSE, NSE and MSEI number are treated as the same series.
Correction: Label every row by exchange coverage and compare only matching scopes.
Assuming the table covers every instrument
Problem: Cash-market totals are interpreted as a full picture of futures, options and hedges.
Correction: Read the segment label and obtain separate derivatives information when the decision depends on hedging or leverage.

Inferring intent from a group label
Problem: “Foreign selling” is read as a uniform bearish view, or “domestic buying” as a vote for every Indian stock.
Correction: Treat the label as a location and reporting category; investigate stock, sector, instrument and time-horizon evidence before inferring intent.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTurning one session into a forecast
Problem: A single positive or negative number becomes a buy or sell command.
Correction: Use a five-to-20-session trend and test it against breadth, earnings, valuation, rates, currency and volatility.
How to incorporate flows into a portfolio decision
Start with the investment decision you are actually making. A long-term investor evaluating earnings and valuation may use institutional flows to understand market positioning and liquidity, but should not replace fundamental work with a daily number. A shorter-term trader may care more about persistence, breadth, volume, volatility and whether cash and derivatives activity point in the same direction.
Define in advance what would invalidate your interpretation. For example, if you regard domestic buying as support, specify whether support means the index holds a level, breadth improves or selling pressure declines; do not change the definition after the market moves. Keep position size and risk limits independent of a single flow print, because the report can be revised and because other market participants can overwhelm institutional demand.
