What Etsy’s Creativity Standards Allow for AI-Assisted Products (2026 Rules)

Yes, Etsy allows some AI-assisted products. The item must reflect your own, individualized creative work: you provide the specific prompts, curate the result, and add meaningful creative input to that item. You must disclose AI use in the listing description. Etsy does not allow bulk bot-generated work without item-specific human oversight, AI-generated functional instructions, or standalone AI prompt bundles.

Etsy’s rules also require truthful presentation. An AI-assisted listing must show what the buyer will actually receive, and Etsy’s October 22, 2026 guidance adds a real-background, unedited photo requirement when AI is used in listing images. These requirements sit alongside Etsy’s intellectual-property, privacy, publicity, content, and production-partner rules.

What does Etsy allow when a product uses AI?

Etsy places seller-prompted AI creations in its “Designed by a seller” category. A fantasy illustration generated from your original prompt or a customized portrait of a buyer’s pet can qualify when you direct and curate the creation for that specific item. The fact that software generated pixels does not remove the need for a human creative role.

The policy is about the process and the finished listing, not a particular AI application. Etsy’s Seller Handbook guidance dated October 22, 2026 says every listed item must involve “direct, individual human prompting, curation, and creative input into that specific item.” Automated output made in bulk, with no individualized oversight, does not meet that standard.

What “individualized” means in practice

  • Write prompts for the particular design, commission, customer, or collection rather than accepting a generic batch of outputs.
  • Review and select the result yourself; reject unsuitable generations and make deliberate creative choices.
  • Edit, arrange, combine, or otherwise develop the output so the listed item reflects your contribution.
  • Keep enough process information to explain how the item was created if a buyer or Etsy needs clarification.

Individualized input does not mean every item must be made entirely by hand. It means your creative decisions must materially shape the specific item offered for sale.

Which Etsy seller category fits an AI-assisted product?

Etsy’s Creativity Standards identify four seller roles. AI-assisted original designs generally belong under “Designed by a seller,” while the other labels describe different relationships to the item.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Creativity Standards category What the category indicates How AI-assisted work relates
Made by a seller The seller makes the item. Do not use this label to imply an AI-generated design was entirely handmade.
Designed by a seller The seller creates the original design, including digital downloads or designs produced with a disclosed production partner. This is the relevant category for seller-prompted AI creations, with AI disclosure in the listing.
Handpicked by a seller The seller’s role is selecting items rather than creating the underlying design. AI generation does not automatically make a listing eligible for this category.
Sourced by a seller The seller obtains the item or materials from a source under Etsy’s standards. Choose this only when the listing genuinely fits Etsy’s sourcing rules; AI use alone is not a reason to use it.

If a production partner prints, manufactures, or fulfills your AI-assisted design, identify that partner accurately. Do not describe the result as handmade by you or as entirely your own physical creation when that would mislead buyers.

What AI-assisted products are prohibited?

Three restrictions matter most: automated content without individualized oversight, AI-generated functional instructions, and prompt bundles sold by themselves.

Listing or practice Status Why
Seller-prompted artwork customized and curated for a specific item Allowed when disclosed It includes individualized prompting, curation, and creative input.
Bulk images or products generated by a bot with no item-specific human involvement Prohibited Etsy requires a human touch in every listed item.
AI-generated craft patterns, recipes, project plans, assembly manuals, or task-oriented ebooks Prohibited Their main purpose is to help a buyer perform a task; the instructions must be the seller’s own work.
Standalone bundles of AI prompts Prohibited Etsy does not permit AI prompt bundles sold separately from finished artwork.

Why the purpose of the item matters

A finished creative work and a set of directions are treated differently. A generated illustration can be a creative product when you direct and curate it. A recipe, sewing pattern, repair guide, or assembly manual is functional content because the buyer relies on it to achieve a task; Etsy’s AI guidance says those instructions cannot be AI-generated.

Packaging prohibited instructions as a PDF or other digital download does not change their purpose. Likewise, adding a decorative cover or a small amount of human editing does not turn an AI-generated instruction set into the seller’s own work.

How must you disclose AI use in an Etsy listing?

Etsy requires sellers to disclose in the listing description when an item was created with AI. Put the disclosure where a buyer can find it while evaluating the item, and describe the seller’s role accurately rather than suggesting the work was entirely handmade.

A practical disclosure structure

  1. Identify the use: state that AI assisted the creation of the listed item.
  2. Explain your contribution: briefly describe your original concept, individualized prompting, selection, editing, or composition.
  3. Describe fulfillment: if a production partner prints or manufactures the design, name the relationship accurately.
  4. Match the description to the file or object: specify whether the buyer receives a digital download, a physical item, or both.

Do not present a generic statement such as “made with technology” if it hides the relevant fact that AI created part of the work. Etsy’s own wording is direct: sellers must disclose within the listing description if an item is created with the use of AI.

What are Etsy’s rules for AI-assisted listing images?

Listing images must accurately represent the item the buyer will receive. Etsy says AI tools may not alter photos to make an item look better, higher quality, or materially different from reality.

When AI is used in listing images, Etsy’s October 22, 2026 Seller Handbook guidance requires at least one unedited photo against a real background. That photo should show the actual physical item when the listing is for a physical product, rather than an AI-enhanced substitute. For visual digital downloads, Etsy Help also says to include a preview of the actual content.

Image review checklist

  • Confirm that the displayed colors, proportions, surface, and finish match the product delivered.
  • Include the required unedited, real-background photo if AI was used in the listing imagery.
  • For a digital artwork or printable, show a preview of the actual file or pages the buyer receives.
  • Remove mockups or generated scenes that imply features, scale, materials, or quality the product does not have.

These image rules are separate from the creative eligibility test. A product can involve genuine seller-directed AI work and still violate the policy if its photos misrepresent the item.

How do you list an AI-assisted digital product step by step?

Use this sequence before publishing or renewing a listing.

  1. Define the item: decide exactly what the buyer receives and whether it is a finished creative work rather than instructions for completing a task.
  2. Create with individualized input: write the original prompt or prompts for that item, make creative decisions, and curate the output.
  3. Complete your human contribution: edit, compose, or otherwise develop the selected result so the listing reflects your work.
  4. Check category and fulfillment: place an original AI-assisted design under “Designed by a seller” and identify any production partner accurately.
  5. Prepare truthful images: use the actual digital content as a preview; if AI appears in listing images, include an unedited photo against a real background as required.
  6. Write the disclosure: state that AI was used and summarize your creative role in the listing description.
  7. Run a policy check: review intellectual-property, privacy, publicity, content, and other Etsy requirements before publishing.

Save the final prompt, source material, edits, and selected output for your own records. Etsy’s published guidance does not prescribe a particular record-keeping system, but retaining this context helps you explain the individualized process behind a disputed listing.

How should you handle functional instructions and borderline products?

Ask what the buyer’s primary job is after purchase. If the buyer mainly looks at, displays, or uses a finished creative work, seller-directed AI may be acceptable with disclosure. If the buyer follows the item to make, prepare, build, repair, use, or complete something, Etsy treats it as functional instruction and says the instructions themselves must be the seller’s own work.

Examples that require caution

  • A decorative poster generated from a custom scene prompt is a creative output.
  • A sewing pattern that tells a buyer how to cut and assemble fabric is a functional instruction.
  • A digital recipe ebook is functional because its purpose is to guide preparation.
  • A project plan or assembly manual remains instructional even when illustrated with AI-generated graphics.

When a file combines artwork and directions, separate the purposes before listing. AI-generated artwork may be eligible, but AI-generated task instructions are not.

What other Etsy policies still apply to AI creations?

AI assistance does not transfer responsibility away from the seller. Etsy says these listings remain subject to its intellectual-property, privacy, publicity, and content rules, as well as requirements for truthful descriptions and accurate imagery.

  • Do not use another person’s protected work, identity, private information, or likeness in a way that violates applicable Etsy rules.
  • Describe the item, materials, dimensions, format, and fulfillment honestly.
  • Identify production partners rather than implying you made a manufactured item yourself.
  • Review the content for violations before publishing, even when an AI tool produced the initial output.

Etsy may remove a violating listing. Severe or repeated violations may result in permanent shop closure, according to the Seller Handbook guidance dated October 22, 2026.

How have Etsy’s AI rules changed over time?

The dates matter because Etsy’s general standards and its detailed AI guidance are separate documents.

The 20-year threshold mentioned in Etsy’s standards belongs to the separate vintage-item category. It is not a statistic about AI products and does not determine whether an AI-assisted design qualifies.

What should you check before renewing an older AI-assisted listing?

Review older listings whenever your images, description, fulfillment arrangement, or creative process has changed. Etsy’s AI-specific guidance asks sellers to meet the same individualized-input and disclosure expectations for each item, not merely for a shop as a whole.

  • Is the listed item tied to a specific human-directed creation rather than an automated batch?
  • Does the description disclose AI use and accurately describe your contribution?
  • Is the listing categorized as a seller-designed item when that is the true role?
  • Are any instructions, patterns, recipes, plans, or manuals AI-generated? If so, they do not meet the stated rule.
  • Do the images show the delivered item, include the required unedited real-background photo when applicable, and preview the actual digital content?
  • Are production partners, intellectual-property permissions, and other policy obligations represented truthfully?

If any answer is uncertain, pause the listing and resolve the underlying description, image, or content issue before renewing it. A compliant creative process cannot cure an inaccurate listing.

Frequently asked questions

Does Etsy publish a list of approved AI tools?

The cited Etsy guidance does not endorse particular providers or publish an approved-tool list. Compliance depends on how you use the tool: individualized prompting, curation, creative input, disclosure, and truthful presentation are the controlling factors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can an AI-assisted design be fulfilled by a production partner?

Yes, Etsy’s “Designed by a seller” category includes original designs produced with disclosed production partners. Your listing must identify that relationship accurately and must not imply that you personally manufactured the physical item.

Does the 20-year vintage rule apply to AI-assisted products?

No. Etsy’s 20-year threshold is part of the separate vintage category. It does not create an exception to, or a special test for, AI-assisted designs.
