In 2025, revenue reached NT$3,809.05 billion, up 31.6% year over year, while reported revenue in U.S. dollars was US$122.42 billion, up 35.9%. The different growth rates reflect different currency bases, not two separate operating results.
Those same forces explain why exceptionally strong demand can coexist with short-term margin pressure: new 2nm lines and overseas fabs carry startup costs before they reach mature utilization. Capital spending therefore rises ahead of capacity and revenue, while margins can soften during the investment phase and recover as productivity and utilization improve.

The four forces behind TSMC’s results
TSMC is a contract semiconductor manufacturer. Customers design chips, while TSMC manufactures them on specified process technologies. Its reported results therefore depend less on selling a single branded product than on the volume, price, technology level and utilization of the manufacturing capacity customers use.
- Demand and wafer volume: More orders for smartphones, high-performance computing (HPC), automotive systems and Internet-of-Things devices increase wafer shipments when TSMC has available capacity.
- Process mix: Leading-edge nodes generally carry different pricing and cost structures from mature or specialty processes. A greater share of advanced-node wafers can lift revenue per wafer, while a new-node ramp can temporarily raise costs.
- Fab utilization and productivity: Fixed manufacturing costs are spread across output. Higher utilization and process improvements generally support gross margin; underused capacity has the opposite effect.
- Investment cycle: TSMC spends ahead of demand on cleanrooms, equipment, advanced packaging and related infrastructure. That spending expands future capacity but introduces depreciation, startup and ramp costs before the facilities are fully productive.
Foreign-exchange movements add another variable. TSMC reports in New Taiwan dollars, but also presents U.S.-dollar figures for investors. Exchange rates can change the apparent growth rate and affect margins even when wafer demand and factory operations have not changed proportionally.

What TSMC actually reported for 2025
TSMC’s 2025 annual figures provide the full-year baseline for judging later quarters. The company reported revenue of NT$3,809.05 billion, a 31.6% increase from 2024. On a U.S.-dollar basis, revenue was US$122.42 billion, representing 35.9% growth. These percentages should not be compared as if they measured different levels of operating growth: the first uses New Taiwan dollars and the second uses U.S. dollars, so exchange-rate translation affects the result.
| Measure | 2025 reported result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | NT$3,809.05 billion | Full-year result in the company’s reporting currency |
| Revenue growth | 31.6% year over year | Growth measured in New Taiwan dollars |
| Revenue | US$122.42 billion | Same business translated into U.S. dollars |
| Revenue growth | 35.9% year over year | U.S.-dollar growth; not interchangeable with the NT-dollar rate |
| Gross margin | 59.9% | Gross profit after manufacturing costs as a percentage of revenue |
| Operating margin | 50.8% | Operating profit after operating expenses as a percentage of revenue |
| Net margin | 45.1% | Net income as a percentage of revenue |
| Capital expenditures | US$40.9 billion | Reported 2025 spending; this is not the 2026 budget |
The annual report attributes demand for advanced technologies to applications including smartphones, HPC, automotive and IoT. That is a description of the platforms using the company’s technologies, not a claim that any one end market independently caused the year’s revenue increase. TSMC also said its 2nm process entered high-volume manufacturing in the fourth quarter of 2025, marking the beginning of a new investment and ramp cycle.
Why process technology mix matters more than a simple wafer count
A wafer made on a leading-edge node is not economically equivalent to a wafer made on an older or specialty process. Smaller geometries require more advanced equipment, have different yields and can command different prices. Consequently, revenue and margins depend on the mix of nodes as well as on total wafer volume.

This is a process-node view of wafer revenue, not a breakdown by smartphone, HPC, automotive or IoT customer. The distinction matters: an end-market chart answers who uses the chips, while a node-mix chart answers which manufacturing technologies generated the wafer revenue. An investor should not substitute one for the other.
TSMC CFO Wendell Huang described the quarter this way: “Our business in the second quarter was supported by strong demand for our leading-edge process technologies.” That statement explains management’s emphasis on advanced-node demand, but it does not establish that every end market grew at the same rate or that demand alone determines profit.
How utilization, productivity and new fabs move margins
Gross margin is particularly sensitive to the stage of the manufacturing cycle. A mature fab running near capacity can spread depreciation and other fixed costs over more wafers. Yield improvements, automation and other productivity gains reduce cost per wafer. Conversely, a new line can incur engineering, qualification and depreciation costs while output is still building.

In Q2 2026, TSMC’s gross margin increased 150 basis points sequentially to 67.7%. Management said the main benefits were cost improvements and slightly higher utilization. Overseas-fab dilution partly offset those gains. The chief financial officer also identified exchange rates as a factor the company does not control.

That bridge illustrates why a strong revenue quarter does not automatically produce an equal margin increase. Utilization and productivity can improve profitability, while foreign exchange and ramp costs can reduce it in the same period. Operating margin and net margin also reflect expenses below gross profit, so they should be tracked separately rather than inferred from revenue growth.
The 2nm ramp trade-off
Management expected the 2nm ramp to dilute second-half 2026 gross margin by approximately 3–4 percentage points. This is a management estimate for that time horizon, not a reported result. The expected pressure reflects the cost of bringing a new technology into volume production before yields, throughput and factory loading reach mature levels.
Overseas-fab ramp costs
Management forecast overseas-fab ramp-up dilution of approximately 2–3 percentage points in the early stages, widening to approximately 3–4 percentage points later. Those estimates likewise describe expected startup effects, not permanent economics. Management cited strong leading-edge demand, productivity gains and optimization of capacity across nodes as potential offsets.
The practical lesson is to separate a temporary ramp charge from a change in long-run pricing power. A margin decline during a capacity build can be the cost of adding strategic supply, but investors still need to monitor whether utilization and productivity eventually improve enough to absorb it.

Why capital spending rises before revenue
TSMC’s capital budget is a forward-looking capacity decision. Semiconductor fabs require long lead times for land, buildings, cleanrooms, lithography and other equipment. Spending must begin before customer demand appears in reported shipments, so capital expenditures can rise well ahead of revenue.
For 2026, management raised the capital budget to US$60–64 billion, compared with reported 2025 capital expenditures of US$40.9 billion. The two figures are not equivalent: US$40.9 billion is spending that occurred in 2025, while US$60–64 billion is a 2026 budget range.
| 2026 capital allocation | Management’s approximate share | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Advanced process technologies | 70–80% | Capacity for leading-edge manufacturing, including newer nodes |
| Specialty technologies | Approximately 10% | Manufacturing processes serving specialized applications |
| Advanced packaging, testing, mask making and other items | 10–20% | Back-end integration and supporting manufacturing infrastructure |
The ranges are approximate management allocations, so they should not be read as a precise final project ledger. They do show the strategic priority: most of the budget is directed to advanced processes, with additional spending on specialty capacity and the packaging and testing capabilities needed to assemble increasingly complex systems.
Management linked the higher budget to continued structural demand, including the emerging agentic-AI market. It also framed investment as a way to capture future opportunities, saying: “At TSMC, a higher level of capital expenditures is always correlated to higher growth opportunities in following years.” That is management’s investment rationale, not an independently proven rule or a guarantee that every dollar spent will earn an acceptable return.

How to read the Q3 2026 outlook
At the July 16, 2026 announcement of Q2 results, TSMC guided Q3 revenue to US$44.6–45.8 billion. It guided gross margin to 65–67% and operating margin to 56–58%, using an assumed exchange rate of NT$32 per U.S. dollar.
| Q3 2026 item | Company guidance | Status and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | US$44.6–45.8 billion | Forward guidance issued July 16, 2026, not an actual result |
| Gross margin | 65–67% | Forward range; affected by utilization, ramps, costs and exchange rates |
| Operating margin | 56–58% | Forward range after operating expenses |
| Exchange-rate assumption | NT$32 per US$1 | Assumption embedded in the guidance |
Because the outlook is in U.S. dollars and includes an explicit exchange-rate assumption, actual results can differ even if wafer demand is close to plan. New-node and overseas-fab costs can also make the guided margin range lower than the exceptionally strong Q2 gross margin.
A framework for analyzing TSMC’s next report
Use the following sequence to connect the income statement with the manufacturing cycle:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Start with currency consistency. Compare NT-dollar revenue with NT-dollar historical figures, or U.S.-dollar revenue with U.S.-dollar figures. Explain any difference in growth rates through the exchange-rate basis.
- Separate actuals from guidance. Label Q2 2026 margins and process mix as reported results, and Q3 figures as management’s forecast.
- Check process mix. Track the share of 7nm-and-more-advanced technologies and the individual 2nm, 3nm, 5nm and 7nm contributions. A shift toward newer nodes can change both pricing and ramp costs.
- Look for the utilization and productivity bridge. Higher loading, yield gains and cost reductions support margins; underutilization and startup inefficiency weigh on them.
- Identify temporary investment effects. Ask whether margin changes reflect 2nm or overseas-fab ramps, and keep management’s estimated dilution separate from realized results.
- Compare spending with capacity objectives. Review how much of the budget goes to advanced processes versus specialty technologies and packaging, testing and masks. The allocation indicates where management expects future demand and operational bottlenecks.
- Reconcile revenue with end markets carefully. Platform demand and process-node mix are different analytical cuts. Do not infer an end-market growth rate from the node table alone.
What can make the story go wrong
- Currency confusion: Presenting 31.6% NT-dollar growth and 35.9% U.S.-dollar growth as interchangeable exaggerates or understates the operating comparison.
- Mixing budgets and spending: Treating the US$60–64 billion 2026 budget as if it were already spent, or replacing it with the US$40.9 billion 2025 actual, misstates the investment cycle.
- Reading guidance as a result: The Q3 revenue and margin ranges are forecasts issued on July 16, 2026, not subsequent reported performance.
- Assuming advanced means immediately more profitable: Leading-edge capacity can support long-term growth while depressing near-term margin during qualification and ramp-up.
- Ignoring overseas capacity costs: New international facilities can dilute gross margin in early and later stages before utilization and productivity mature.
- Over-attributing growth to one application: TSMC cites several platforms for advanced-technology demand; the available figures do not establish a single end-market cause.
The central investment-cycle insight
TSMC’s results are best understood as a linked sequence rather than isolated quarterly numbers. Demand for advanced chips supports wafer volume and the process mix. Utilization and productivity determine how efficiently that volume is manufactured. New 2nm lines and overseas fabs require capital and temporarily raise costs. If demand materializes and factories mature, the resulting utilization and productivity can support margins; if demand or execution falls short, the company carries more capacity and depreciation without the expected revenue leverage.
