What Does an ASX Broker Price Target Mean, and How Is It Calculated?

By TheFinanceBase Team 9 min read

An ASX broker price target is an analyst’s valuation opinion for a listed security: an estimate of what one share could be worth under the assumptions in a dated research report. It is not a price set by ASX, company guidance, or a promise that the market will reach that level.

There is no single ASX-mandated formula. Analysts forecast business results, apply one or more valuation approaches, adjust for capital structure and share count, and express the result as a per-share figure. To understand any target, read the original report’s method, assumptions, horizon, risks and disclosures.

What an ASX broker price target actually is

A broker price target is best understood as a price recommendation or valuation opinion from an equity analyst. The analyst forms a view about a company’s future earnings, cash generation, assets, projects or other value drivers, then converts that view into an implied value per share.

The target belongs to the broker’s report, not to the Australian Securities Exchange. ASX does not set, approve or certify every target. In an example report dated 17 April 2026, Canaccord Genuity changed its target for SKS Technologies Group Limited to A$6.47 from A$5.44 while retaining a Buy rating. That is one broker’s dated opinion about one company, not an ASX forecast or a universal calculation. The report also states that ASX did not prepare or contribute to its content (Canaccord report, 17 April 2026).

The Takeovers Panel has warned that the analytical work behind figures commonly called broker valuations can vary widely. It says “price recommendations” is a more accurate description in many contexts. Its Guidance Note 18 page is marked superseded, so treat that passage as explanatory context rather than current operative takeover guidance:

“Although they are commonly referred to in the market place as ‘broker valuations’, the amount of analysis and research which goes into the development of the figures which are published can vary widely.” — Takeovers Panel, Guidance Note 18, paragraph 19 (Guidance Note 18).

How analysts calculate a target price

No source establishes one formula that every ASX broker must use. The calculation is a chain of forecasts and assumptions, and the exact treatment differs between companies, sectors, brokers and report dates. Use the report itself as the authoritative explanation of a particular number.

1. Forecast the company’s drivers

The analyst starts with information available when the report is prepared and projects the drivers that matter for the business. Depending on the company, these may include revenue, margins, earnings, operating cash flow, capital expenditure, reserves, project volumes, commodity prices, subscriber numbers or asset values.

Forecast period and growth assumptions matter immediately. A target based on next year’s earnings can differ substantially from one based on a multi-year project ramp-up. Check whether the report gives explicit yearly estimates, a terminal period, or a stated target horizon.

2. Apply a valuation approach

The forecasts are put through one or more valuation techniques. Common approaches in equity research include discounted cash flow, earnings or revenue multiples, comparable-company analysis, sum-of-the-parts valuation and asset-based methods. A report may combine methods or weight them differently. Do not assume a method was used unless the report says so.

AASB 13 Fair Value Measurement discusses valuation techniques and inputs in an accounting fair-value context. It does not prescribe how a broker must set an equity price target. Accounting standards therefore should not be presented as the source of a universal broker formula.

3. Estimate company or equity value

The chosen method produces an estimated enterprise value, equity value, or value for separate business assets. Analysts may adjust for net debt, cash, leases, minority interests, investments, provisions or other claims on value. Project and commodity assumptions can be especially important for resources, energy and development companies.

4. Convert value to a per-share figure

The analyst then translates the estimated value into a price per share using the relevant capital structure and share-count assumptions. The report may account for current shares, options, performance rights, a proposed capital raising, dilution or other securities. There is no universal broker formula for which instruments are included or how dilution is timed; inspect the report’s model and notes.

5. Publish the target with a rating and date

The final number is normally published with a recommendation such as Buy, Hold or Sell, a report date, analyst attribution and risk disclosures. Canaccord’s SKS Technologies example shows why the date matters: it records a change from A$5.44 to A$6.47 and says the opinions and estimates reflect the author’s judgment as of the report date and may change without notice. A target is therefore a time-stamped view, not a permanent valuation.

Inputs worth checking in the original report

These are useful investigation points rather than a checklist that every report must contain:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Forecast period and horizon: Identify the years modelled and the period the target is intended to represent.
  • Growth and margins: Test whether revenue growth, operating margins or production assumptions are materially above or below recent performance.
  • Discount rate or cost of capital: Where a discounted-cash-flow method is used, small changes can materially alter present value.
  • Valuation multiples: Check the selected earnings, revenue, cash-flow or other multiple and the comparable companies used.
  • Assets, projects and commodities: Look for assumptions about reserves, construction timing, prices, volumes, approvals and ramp-up.
  • Net debt and cash: Enterprise-value calculations require a clear bridge to equity value.
  • Share count and dilution: Confirm whether options, rights, raisings or other potential shares are included.
  • Sensitivity and scenarios: A bull, base and bear case can show how dependent the target is on a few variables.
  • Disclosures: Read statements about interests, corporate relationships, fees and other conflicts.

Target price versus the traded market price

The market price is the price at which buyers and sellers most recently traded the security. The broker target is a forward-looking analytical opinion. They answer different questions: one records the market’s latest transaction; the other expresses what the analyst believes the share could be worth under stated assumptions.

ASX’s market-capitalisation methodology illustrates the distinction. ASX uses the previous trading day’s last traded price of ordinary securities and multiplies it by ordinary securities on issue. It updates the published market capitalisation and securities figure overnight on trading days. That is a methodology for reporting market capitalisation, not for calculating a broker target.

Calculating the arithmetic gap

To compare a target with a selected share price, use:

(target price ÷ current share price − 1) × 100 = implied percentage difference

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a share trades at A$10 and a report’s target is A$12, the arithmetic difference is 20%. Label the inputs clearly: specify the share-price date and the target report date. The result is not a probability, expected-return guarantee or promised gain. It excludes dividends, brokerage, taxes and other transaction costs, and the target may be revised before the market reaches it.

A target can be below the market price as well as above it. A share trading at A$12 against a A$10 target has a negative arithmetic gap, but that still does not establish how likely the target is or when it might be reached.

Why targets become stale

There is no universal expiry period for an ASX broker target in the sources available. A target can lose relevance when a company reports new results, changes its outlook, raises or repays capital, issues additional shares, alters a project, or faces a change in interest rates, commodity prices or market multiples.

Before using a number, check the report date, subsequent company announcements and whether the broker has issued an update. Treat an old target as historical analysis unless a current report confirms that the assumptions still stand.

Individual targets and consensus estimates

An individual target is one analyst’s view. A consensus figure aggregates targets or recommendations from multiple brokers; it is not an official ASX valuation and it does not remove the assumptions behind each contribution.

Market Index describes Australian services that collect broker reports and group differing rating vocabularies into Buy, Hold and Sell categories on its Broker Consensus & Recommendations page. Its warnings are important for small companies: there may be only one contributing analyst, and an analyst can stop coverage without notifying the market. Displayed consensus data can therefore become stale.

How to assess a consensus number

  1. Count the contributing analysts. A single target is not meaningfully diversified consensus.
  2. Check the date of every underlying report and the publisher’s freshness rules. Market Index applies a freshness cutoff to the dataset it displays, but cutoff rules can change and other providers may use different rules.
  3. Read the range as well as the average. A wide spread signals disagreement that a mean can conceal.
  4. Check whether contributors use comparable horizons and assumptions. A 12-month target and a long-term project valuation should not be treated as identical measures.
  5. Look for missing coverage. An average based on a few brokers may not represent the full market’s view.

A disciplined way to compare two broker targets

When two targets differ, the higher number is not automatically more accurate. Compare the reports on the same axes:

Comparison axis Questions to ask
Date and horizon Which report is newer, and what period is each target intended to cover?
Valuation method Does each analyst use discounted cash flow, multiples, asset value, sum-of-the-parts or a combination? How are methods weighted?
Business assumptions How do revenue, earnings, cash flow, margins, commodity prices, project timing or asset assumptions differ?
Capital structure Are debt, cash, dilution, options, raisings and share count treated differently?
Risks and scenarios Does either report show sensitivities, downside cases or explicit factors that could invalidate the model?
Consensus depth How many analysts contribute, and how wide is the target range?
Disclosures What relationships, interests, fees or conflicts does each broker disclose?

This context matters because the Takeovers Panel says the depth of analysis behind broker valuation figures varies. A target supported by a detailed model and sensitivities should not automatically be treated the same as a lightly explained number.

What a broker target does not mean

It is not an ASX-set price

The exchange does not set the target or guarantee its quality. ASX scheme reports are prepared by participating research providers, and the Canaccord example expressly says ASX did not prepare or contribute to that report.

It is not company guidance

An analyst’s report is separate from an issuer’s own guidance. ASX Guidance Note 8, dated 27 May 2024, warns that an issuer publishing analyst forecasts or consensus estimates on the Market Announcements Platform can imply endorsement and amount to de facto earnings guidance. The note’s caution is directed at the issuer’s act of publishing estimates; it does not convert an analyst target into company guidance.

“Publishing this information on MAP implies that the entity considers it to be market sensitive.” — ASX, Guidance Note 8, section 7.5 (ASX Guidance Note 8).

It is not a guarantee

A target reflects assumptions that can fail. The company may miss forecasts, markets may re-rate, capital costs may rise, or dilution may change the per-share value. The Takeovers Panel’s “price recommendation” language is a useful reminder not to treat the figure as a promised outcome.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is not personal investment advice

A broker rating is expressed for the analyst’s model, coverage universe and stated assumptions. Whether a security suits you depends on your objectives, time frame, diversification, risk capacity and tax position. The target alone cannot make that decision.

Where to find ASX broker research

ASX operates an Equity Research Scheme intended to support research on under-covered small-cap companies. ASX says readers can subscribe to a weekly email linking to reports received in the prior week, but it does not maintain a browsable database of published scheme research.

The scheme is open to eligible ASX Market Participants that provide research, and the reports are produced by those participating providers. Eligibility criteria and the list of participating providers described for FY27 are time-sensitive, so check the ASX page for current details rather than assuming they remain unchanged.

A practical reading workflow

  1. Open the full report: Do not rely on a headline target or a consensus widget alone.
  2. Record the essentials: Write down the broker, company, report date, target, rating and stated horizon.
  3. Find the valuation section: Identify the method, key forecasts, discount or multiple assumptions and any scenario analysis.
  4. Reconcile to per share: Follow the bridge from enterprise or asset value through debt, cash, dilution and share count.
  5. Check freshness: Search for newer results, capital raisings, guidance changes and broker updates.
  6. Compare carefully: If using consensus, record analyst count, report dates and the full range, not only the mean.
  7. Separate arithmetic from judgment: Calculate the target-price gap, but do not describe it as a probability or guaranteed return.
  8. Read disclosures and risks: Understand relationships and the events that could invalidate the valuation.

The most useful question is not “How far above today’s price is the target?” It is “Which assumptions produce this per-share figure, how current are they, and what would make them wrong?”
