For an Indian individual account, expect to submit the bank’s dormant-account activation or re-KYC form, current identity and address proof, PAN (or the bank’s accepted alternative), and sometimes a recent passport-size photograph. Carry original documents for verification and self-attested copies when requested. The exact list changes with the bank, account ownership, residency and whether the balance has become an unclaimed deposit.
First confirm what “dormant” means at your bank
“Dormant,” “inoperative,” “inactive,” “unclaimed” and “frozen” are not interchangeable labels. Before gathering paperwork, ask the bank which status applies and why. An account that is merely inoperative may need a re-KYC submission. An account treated as an unclaimed deposit can require a separate claim or revival process. An account frozen for a court order, compliance review or another reason may follow a different procedure altogether.

The examples in this guide are primarily from Indian banks and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Rules in another country, or for a different type of account, may be different. Even within India, each bank decides which forms and documents it will accept for a particular customer record.
Typical time thresholds
HDFC Bank’s customer guidance describes an account as dormant or inoperative after more than two years without operation and as unclaimed after more than ten years. The RBI’s instructions on unclaimed deposits address balances in accounts that have been unoperated for ten years or more and transferred to the Depositor Education and Awareness (DEA) Fund. These are useful reference points, not a substitute for the definition used by the bank holding your account.

The core document checklist for an Indian individual account
For a resident individual account, assemble the following before visiting or contacting the bank:
- Activation or re-KYC request: the bank’s dormant/inoperative-account activation form, re-KYC form or a written application if the bank directs you to use one.
- Identity and address proof: a current document accepted by that bank. Some banks accept one officially recognised document for both purposes; others ask for separate identity and address evidence.
- PAN: provide your PAN, or the bank’s approved declaration or alternative form if you do not have PAN.
- Photograph: a recent passport-size photograph where the bank’s checklist requires one.
- Verification copies: bring originals and self-attested photocopies in the format and number the bank specifies.
Do not assume that Aadhaar by itself will reactivate every account. The bank may need to reconcile the document with its existing KYC record, update an old address, collect a missing tax declaration or obtain a fresh signature.

What individual banks’ published checklists show
Published bank instructions illustrate how much the requirements can vary. They should be read as examples for those banks, not as a universal Indian checklist.

|---|---|
| Federal Bank, resident individual | Accepted identity document such as Aadhaar, permanent driving licence, voter ID or valid passport; PAN or Form 97 if PAN is unavailable; completed KYC updation form; latest passport-size photograph. Eligible resident savings customers may have a video-KYC option when PAN and Aadhaar are already updated and the account is a single-mode resident savings account. |
| Federal Bank, NRI | Valid passport or OCI card, valid visa, Form 97 if PAN is unavailable, recent photograph, NRI KYC updation form, and FATCA/CRS self-declaration or a valid tax-identification-number equivalent where not already updated. |
| Federal Bank, unclaimed deposit or inoperative revival | Signed branch application, including at a non-home branch; recent photograph; self-attested identity and address proof; PAN or Form 60 if PAN is unavailable; applicable NRI documents. The page states that one financial transaction is mandatory for activation, which is a Federal Bank instruction rather than a general rule. |
| HDFC Bank | Valid identity and address proof plus the relevant dormant-account activation form at a branch. The bank also lists an online option for resident single-holder accounts and distinguishes inoperative/dormant accounts from unclaimed accounts. |
| ICICI Bank | A re-KYC request and documents at a branch. Its examples include voter ID, driving licence, valid passport, proof of possession of an Aadhaar number, an NREGA job card or an NPR smart card. |
| Bandhan Bank | A request letter and valid identity and address proof at a branch. Additional documents may be requested after the submission is checked. |
| SBI, unclaimed account | A branch request with proper KYC. The listed items include a request letter, valid identity and address proof, and the latest photograph. |
The practical lesson is that the same customer may be asked for a different combination of documents by different banks. The account’s existing KYC data, ownership pattern, residency and status determine the final checklist.

Documents for joint accounts
Ask the bank whether every joint holder must sign the activation request and submit updated KYC. Banks commonly need to verify each person whose name remains on the account, particularly when one holder’s address, signature or identity document is outdated. Take the identity and address documents for all holders, along with any PAN or alternative declarations the bank requests for each person.
Do not rely on the signature of only the holder who visits unless the bank confirms that its mandate permits that route. A mismatch between the account mandate and the signatures on the revival form is a common reason for a second visit.

Extra documents for NRI customers
An NRI account can require evidence beyond the standard resident checklist. Be prepared to provide:
- A valid passport or OCI card.
- A valid visa or other proof of current residency status, where applicable.
- Evidence of the overseas residential address if the bank’s record needs updating.
- FATCA/CRS self-certification and tax-identification information, including a TIN-equivalent document when the bank does not already hold it.
- The bank’s NRI re-KYC or account-revival form, plus a recent photograph if requested.
Federal Bank’s NRI checklist specifically combines passport or OCI evidence, a valid visa, the NRI KYC form, photograph, PAN or Form 97, and FATCA/CRS information where needed. Other banks can use different forms or require additional verification.

When the account is an unclaimed deposit
After a long period without customer-initiated operation, the bank may classify the balance as an unclaimed deposit rather than an ordinary dormant account. HDFC Bank’s guidance uses more than ten years without operation for this status, while RBI instructions cover balances unoperated for ten years or more and the related DEA Fund process.
In that situation, ask for the bank’s unclaimed-deposit claim or revival form. The bank may need proof that links you to the deposit, such as the account relationship and updated KYC, rather than treating the request as a simple account reactivation. SBI’s published guidance for an unclaimed account lists a request letter, valid identity and address proof and the latest photograph. Federal Bank’s unclaimed-deposit/inoperative-revival instructions add a signed branch application, self-attested documents, PAN or Form 60 where applicable, and relevant NRI papers.
Ask the bank whether it wants a claim for the balance, reactivation of the account, or both. Those can be separate administrative steps, especially when the money has entered an unclaimed-deposit process.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to reactivate the account: a practical sequence
- Contact the bank first. Ask whether the account is inactive, inoperative/dormant, frozen, closed or unclaimed, and request the current document list for that exact account type.
- Obtain the correct form. Request the dormant-account activation, re-KYC, unclaimed-deposit claim or revival form. If the bank accepts a written application instead, ask what wording and attachments it requires.
- Check your KYC details. Confirm the name, address, date of birth, PAN, mobile number, tax status and signature recorded by the bank. Gather replacement documents for any item that has changed or expired.
- Prepare originals and copies. Carry the originals for inspection and self-attested copies where instructed. Keep a complete duplicate of the signed form and documents you submit.
- Confirm ownership signatures. For a joint account, ask whether all holders must sign and attend, or whether the account mandate allows one holder to submit the request.
- Submit through an available channel. Since the RBI’s June 12, 2025 amendment, banks must make KYC updation for activating inoperative accounts and unclaimed deposits available at all branches, including non-home branches. The amendment says: “A bank shall make available the facility of updation of KYC for activation of inoperative accounts and unclaimed deposits at all branches (including non-home branches).”
- Ask about digital eligibility. Some banks offer online or video-KYC routes only for narrow categories. HDFC Bank lists an online option for resident single-holder accounts. Federal Bank’s video-KYC eligibility includes a resident savings account in a single mode with PAN and Aadhaar already updated. An NRI, joint, business or unclaimed-deposit case may still require branch handling.
- Complete any bank-specific activation condition. Federal Bank states that one financial transaction is mandatory for activation in its unclaimed-deposit/inoperative-revival process. Do not treat that requirement as applying to every Indian bank.
- Obtain an acknowledgement. Keep the submission receipt, reference number or stamped copy. Ask when the bank expects the status to change and whether it needs anything else.
Why a submission may be delayed or rejected
- Wrong status: You used a dormant-account form when the bank has classified the balance as unclaimed, frozen or closed.
- Outdated KYC: The address, photograph, signature, PAN or tax-residency details no longer match the bank’s records.
- Incomplete ownership documentation: A joint holder’s signature or KYC is missing.
- Unacceptable document: The document is expired, the copy is not self-attested, or it is not on that bank’s accepted list.
- Unclaimed-deposit evidence missing: The bank needs additional material connecting the claimant with the old account or deposit.
- Digital route ineligible: The account type, residency, number of holders or existing KYC data falls outside the bank’s online or video-KYC criteria.
If the bank asks for more documents, request the reason in writing or on the acknowledgement and submit only the specific items required. If a non-home branch cannot complete the case, ask whether it can accept the KYC update and forward it, or whether a specialist unclaimed-deposit unit must process the claim.
Questions to ask before you leave the branch
- What exact status is recorded on the account?
- Is this an activation, re-KYC update, unclaimed-deposit claim or account-closure issue?
- Are originals required, and which copies must be self-attested?
- Must every joint holder sign or appear?
- Is a financial transaction required for this bank and this status?
- Can the request be completed at a non-home branch, through video KYC or online?
- What reference number and expected processing time will you receive?
The safest preparation is therefore not a single document such as Aadhaar. It is a complete, current KYC file matched to the bank’s status, ownership and residency requirements.
