What Counts as an Old-Economy Investment? A Guide to Industrials, Energy, and Infrastructure

“Old-economy investment” is an informal description, not an official sector or industry classification. It usually refers to established, asset-intensive or foundational businesses such as machinery manufacturers, freight operators, oil and gas producers, electric utilities, construction contractors and owners of physical networks. The label is useful only when you define the underlying business activity and the classification system being used. A company’s age, familiar name or dividend history does not by itself make it an old-economy investment.

For a precise analysis, start with formal taxonomies. The Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS) places relevant companies mainly in Industrials, Energy and Utilities, while infrastructure exposure can span all three. SIC and NAICS are different systems with different purposes. This guide shows how to translate the informal label into a checkable description without treating a sector name as a recommendation or a prediction of returns.

What “old economy” means in investment discussions

Investors and journalists use “old economy” as shorthand for businesses tied to physical production, transportation, extraction, construction or essential services. Typical examples include factories that make industrial equipment, companies that build roads or airports, rail and trucking operators, oil and gas producers, fuel pipelines, electric and water utilities, and suppliers of materials used by those businesses.

The phrase has no single boundary. One writer may include regulated utilities and telecommunications networks because they operate large physical systems; another may reserve it for heavy manufacturing and fossil-fuel companies. Some firms combine physical and digital activities, so a label based on a company’s reputation can be misleading. The defensible approach is to describe what the company actually produces, operates, transports or services, then identify the taxonomy used to classify it.

GICS is designed for investment analysis. SIC codes identify the type of business reported in U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filings, while NAICS and Bureau of Economic Analysis terminology describe economic activity for other analytical and statistical purposes. These systems should not be treated as interchangeable. The SEC provides its SIC code list here: https://www.sec.gov/search-filings/standard-industrial-classification-sic-code-list. The BEA explains its sector terminology here: https://www.bea.gov/help/glossary/sector.

Because the expression is interpretive, an article or fund description that uses it should state the included activities. “Old economy” can describe an exposure theme, but it cannot substitute for reading a company’s filings, revenue mix, principal business activity or fund methodology.

Which formal sectors contain the businesses people call old economy?

Under GICS, companies are assigned according to their principal business activity. The current overview describes 11 sectors, 25 industry groups, 74 industries and 163 sub-industries. Those are levels in a classification hierarchy, not counts of investments or measures of performance. S&P Dow Jones Indices and MSCI review the methodology regularly, so details should be checked against the current GICS materials at https://www.spglobal.com/spdji/en/landing/topic/gics/ and https://www.msci.com/indexes/index-resources/gics.

Formal GICS sector Business activities covered Why it may be called old economy
Industrials Manufacturers and distributors of capital goods, including machinery, electrical equipment, building products, aerospace and defense; construction and engineering services; transportation providers; and various commercial and professional services. These businesses make, install, move or maintain equipment and structures used by households, companies and governments.
Energy Exploration and production, refining and marketing, storage and transportation of oil, gas and coal and other consumable fuels, plus oil and gas equipment and services. Operations depend on reserves, wells, processing plants, terminals, pipelines and other large physical assets.
Utilities Electric, gas and water utilities, independent power producers and certain renewable-electricity businesses. Utilities operate networks and generation assets that deliver essential services, often under regulated or contracted arrangements.
Infrastructure theme Not a separate GICS sector. Exposure can come from industrial construction and engineering, utility networks, or energy production, storage and transport. The common thread is ownership, operation or construction of long-lived physical systems rather than a single industry code.

S&P Dow Jones Indices describes GICS as an industry-analysis framework used for investment research, portfolio management and asset allocation. That purpose explains why the taxonomy is useful for organizing exposure, but it does not mean that a sector classification predicts a security’s return or suitability.

Industrials: the broadest old-economy category

Industrials is often the largest and most varied home for old-economy businesses. A machinery manufacturer, an electrical-equipment supplier, a building-products producer, an engineering contractor and a freight carrier can all fall in this sector even though their customers and economics differ.

Capital-goods manufacturers and distributors

Capital-goods companies make equipment that other organizations use to produce goods or deliver services. Examples include industrial machinery, electrical systems, tools, construction equipment and building products. A company’s classification follows its principal activity; a manufacturer that also sells software is not automatically a technology company, and a technology-enabled distributor is not automatically an old-economy industrial.

Construction and engineering

Construction and engineering firms design, build or maintain facilities and infrastructure. Their work can include civil projects, industrial plants, transportation systems and public works. Revenue may be project-based, recurring through maintenance contracts, or a mixture. The presence of a physical project does not by itself determine whether a company is classified in Industrials; the principal business activity does.

Transportation

Rail, trucking, air freight, marine transport and other transportation providers are included in Industrials under GICS. They may own vehicles and terminals, lease assets, or operate networks through contracts. Transportation is therefore an example of an old-economy exposure that is service-based as well as asset-intensive.

Commercial and professional services

GICS Industrials also includes several commercial and professional services. Some of these businesses may have limited physical assets compared with a factory or rail network. Calling every company in the sector “old economy” would therefore overstate the meaning of the shorthand. Use the specific industry and revenue sources instead of the sector label alone.

Energy: extraction, processing and fuel logistics

GICS Energy covers the chain that finds, produces, processes, markets, stores and transports oil, gas, coal and other consumable fuels, as well as companies that provide oil-and-gas equipment and services.

Exploration and production

Exploration and production businesses search for reserves and extract hydrocarbons. Their assets can include mineral rights, wells, gathering systems and production facilities. A company focused on these activities fits the Energy definition even if it has a modern digital operating system or sells electricity from a small adjacent business; classification follows principal activity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Refining and marketing

Refiners convert crude oil into fuels and other products, while marketing operations distribute those products. These activities involve processing plants, terminals and logistics. They are different from extraction economically, but both sit within the formal Energy sector.

Storage, transportation and services

Fuel pipelines, storage terminals and other transportation systems can be classified in Energy when their principal activity is moving or storing oil and gas. Oilfield-equipment and service providers support exploration and production without owning the same reserves. A company that builds a pipeline may instead be classified in Industrials if construction and engineering is its principal activity, which is why the infrastructure label cannot replace a taxonomy check.

Utilities: networks and power supply

Utilities include electric, gas and water utilities, independent power producers and certain renewable-electricity businesses. Their defining activity is supplying these services, not whether the generation technology is old or new. A utility operating a gas plant, a hydroelectric facility or a qualifying renewable portfolio can remain in Utilities because the principal business is electricity or other regulated service.

Utility exposure is often discussed as infrastructure because networks, substations, treatment plants, pipes and generation facilities are long-lived assets. However, “infrastructure” is not a GICS sector. Two companies that both own physical networks may fall into different sectors if one primarily provides regulated electricity and the other primarily transports fuel or builds equipment.

Why infrastructure crosses sectors

Infrastructure describes a role in the economy rather than one standardized industry code. A road builder and an electric utility both support essential systems, but the former may be in Industrials and the latter in Utilities. A fuel-storage operator may be in Energy, while a contractor that constructs the storage tanks may be in Industrials.

This cross-sector structure matters when an investor evaluates a fund, index or portfolio described as infrastructure-focused. The portfolio may combine construction and engineering companies, transport operators, utilities, energy logistics firms or owners of other physical assets. The label alone does not reveal the mix. Read the vehicle’s methodology and holdings to determine whether exposure comes from regulated networks, project construction, fuel transport, equipment manufacturing or another activity.

The UK government’s industrial-strategy definitions, updated June 9, 2026, note that sector definitions can overlap and that SIC-based definitions may not capture the full extent of some activities: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/industrial-strategy/industrial-strategy-sector-definitions-list. That is a useful reminder that classifications are analytical tools, not perfect descriptions of mixed-activity companies.

How GICS decides where a company belongs

GICS assigns a company to the sub-industry that best represents its principal business activity. MSCI identifies revenues as a key factor and also considers earnings and market perception. The practical implication is that a company’s largest or most important source of business generally matters more than a small side operation or a marketing description.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Principal activity: Identify what the company primarily produces, operates, transports or services.
  • Revenue mix: Examine which activities generate the largest share of revenue and whether that mix is changing.
  • Earnings contribution: Consider whether a smaller revenue line contributes a disproportionate share of profit.
  • Market perception: Classification frameworks can consider how the company is generally understood by investors, alongside operating evidence.
  • Corporate events: A merger, spin-off or major shift in operations can lead to a classification review.

Because GICS is reviewed annually, a classification can change as a company’s business changes. A historical label should not be assumed to remain current. Check the latest index or company documentation when the classification affects an investment decision.

How to check whether a specific company fits the label

Use the following process instead of relying on a ticker symbol, a fund name or an informal article description.

  1. Define the question. Decide whether you mean an investment classified under GICS, a business identified by an SEC SIC code, a NAICS economic activity, or a broader theme such as physical infrastructure. Write down the definition before comparing companies.
  2. Read the company’s principal-business description. Start with its annual report, regulatory filing or investor-relations description. List the products and services it actually sells, the assets it operates and the customers it serves.
  3. Map activities to the relevant taxonomy. For GICS, consult the company’s published classification or the index materials used by the investment product. For an SEC filer, locate the SIC code in EDGAR and compare it with the SEC’s official list at https://www.sec.gov/search-filings/standard-industrial-classification-sic-code-list. Do not convert an SIC code into a GICS sector as though the systems were identical.
  4. Check the revenue and earnings mix. Segment reporting can show whether the company is mainly a machinery maker, a transport operator, a utility, an energy producer or something else. If no comparable segment detail is disclosed, record that limitation rather than guessing.
  5. Identify the infrastructure role, if any. Ask whether the company builds infrastructure, owns a regulated network, transports or stores fuel, manufactures equipment, or provides a supporting service. Record the role separately from the formal sector.
  6. Check the date. Note the filing period and the date of the classification source. A company that has recently acquired or sold a major division may not fit an older description.
  7. Separate classification from suitability. A sector match tells you what business exposure you are buying. It does not establish that the stock, bond, fund or other security is appropriate for your objectives, risk tolerance, time horizon or diversification needs.

A practical comparison framework

When comparing possible old-economy exposures, use the same questions for every company or investment vehicle. This avoids comparing a regulated utility with a cyclical equipment maker solely because both own physical assets.

Question What to examine Why it changes the interpretation
What does it do? Products, services, assets and customers. Two companies with similar names may have entirely different principal activities.
Which taxonomy applies? GICS, SIC, NAICS, BEA or the vehicle’s own methodology. Labels from different systems are not interchangeable.
Where does infrastructure exposure arise? Construction, equipment, transport, utility networks, energy production, storage or fuel transport. The same theme can span Industrials, Energy and Utilities.
How is the business paid? Project contracts, freight rates, commodity sales, regulated rates, usage fees or long-term agreements. Revenue structure is more informative than the old-economy label itself.
What is the exposure vehicle? Individual company, exchange-traded fund, mutual fund, index or another instrument. A vehicle can combine several sectors even when its name emphasizes one theme.
What evidence is current? Latest filing, classification notice and fund holdings date. Business mixes and classifications can change.

If a table cell cannot be established from the company’s disclosures or the vehicle’s methodology, mark the information as not stated and investigate further. Do not fill the gap with an assumption based on the company’s age, logo, headquarters or share-price history.

Common mistakes when using “old economy”

Treating the label as an official sector

There is no GICS, SEC or government category called old economy. Presenting it as an official classification creates false precision. State the formal sector or code and then explain why you are using the informal theme.

Assuming old means obsolete

Established industries can adopt automation, data systems, electrification and other newer technologies. Conversely, a young company can own mines, pipelines or factories. Age and technology adoption do not determine the classification.

Putting all infrastructure in one bucket

Infrastructure may mean a contractor, a utility, an energy transporter, a port operator or an equipment supplier. These businesses can have different taxonomies, customers and revenue models. Identify the specific infrastructure role before comparing them.

Confusing a sector with an investment thesis

A sector description does not establish a forecast, a valuation advantage, a dividend promise or protection against inflation. The available classification sources do not provide a return ranking or security recommendation. Those questions require separate analysis of financial statements, valuation, risks and the investor’s circumstances.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mixing classification systems

An SIC code in an SEC filing is not a GICS sector, and a NAICS activity is not automatically equivalent to either. If two sources disagree, first check whether they are answering different classification questions.

Ignoring mixed-activity companies

Conglomerates and companies with major business segments can span several activities. Use segment revenue and the principal-business rule to determine the dominant exposure, and disclose any material secondary businesses rather than forcing a single broad label.

What the label can and cannot tell an investor

Used carefully, “old economy” helps a reader look for exposure to physical production, essential networks and foundational services. It can organize research across Industrials, Energy and Utilities and prompt useful questions about assets, contracts, regulation and commodity sensitivity.

It cannot tell you whether a security is cheap or expensive, whether its earnings will rise, how volatile it will be, or whether it belongs in a particular portfolio. A sector label describes business exposure. Investment suitability depends on the security’s structure, financial condition, risks, costs, diversification and the investor’s own objectives.
