An AI stock is not a formal exchange or regulatory category. It is a shorthand for a publicly traded company with meaningful exposure to developing, supplying, enabling or using artificial intelligence. The useful question is not whether a company uses the words “AI” in its marketing, but where it sits in the AI value chain, which revenue or cost lines reflect that exposure, and whether the resulting cash flow can justify the investment required.
Some companies sell chips and data-center equipment directly into AI demand. Others rent computing capacity, sell software, add paid AI features or use AI inside an older advertising, commerce or enterprise business. Those models can have very different revenue visibility, margins, capital requirements and risks.

What counts as an AI stock?
For practical investing purposes, classify a company as an AI stock when AI is a material part of its products, infrastructure demand, growth plan or operating economics. “Material” does not require that every dollar of revenue come from AI. It means the company’s results or valuation could be meaningfully affected by AI adoption, spending or competition.
This definition is deliberately broader than a pure-play definition. A semiconductor designer whose processors train and run models has direct AI exposure. A cloud provider that sells computing capacity and model tools has platform exposure. A search, advertising or enterprise-software company may be an operational user if AI changes its product, costs or customer economics. Calling all three “AI stocks” is reasonable only if you also identify the type of exposure.

Nasdaq Global Indexes’ May 2026 taxonomy separates semiconductors, production-technology equipment, cloud platforms and AI services, networking, physical infrastructure, AI-adoption beneficiaries and other operational AI users. It describes semiconductor firms as immediate beneficiaries of the spending cycle, while the broader group includes suppliers and companies applying AI in workflows. This is an analytical taxonomy, not a universal security classification.

A company can occupy more than one row. The classification tells you what kind of AI economics you are buying; it does not by itself establish that the stock is attractive.
How AI companies make money
1. Selling compute and infrastructure
AI models require processors, servers, networking, storage and data-center systems. Infrastructure suppliers make money by selling those products to cloud companies, enterprises and other organizations building capacity. Revenue may be recognized when equipment is delivered, while the customer may generate its own AI revenue much later.

NVIDIA reported fiscal 2026 Data Center revenue of $193.7 billion, up 68% year over year. The company attributed fourth-quarter momentum to accelerated computing and AI. Data Center is a broad segment, however, and is not the same as a separately reported “pure AI revenue” line. The figure demonstrates substantial exposure to AI-driven infrastructure demand, not that every dollar came from AI products.
Infrastructure economics are cyclical. A supplier can enjoy rapid sales growth when customers expand capacity, then face slower orders, pricing pressure, excess inventory or a new generation of hardware. Check unit demand, product mix and customer commitments instead of treating one strong quarter as a permanent trend.

2. Renting cloud capacity and platforms
Cloud providers charge for the computing, storage and networking used to train or run models. They can also charge for development environments, model access, security, data tools and deployment services. Billing may be metered by compute time, tokens, storage or a broader enterprise contract.
Microsoft reported $168.9 billion of Microsoft Cloud revenue, up 23%, in fiscal 2025. Microsoft defines that total to include Microsoft 365 Commercial cloud, Azure and other cloud services, the commercial portion of LinkedIn and Dynamics 365. Azure and other cloud services revenue grew 34% in the same fiscal year. These are important indicators of cloud scale and growth, but neither number is an AI-only revenue figure.
Cloud AI can increase revenue while also increasing costs. Providers must buy or lease accelerators, expand data centers, secure electricity and networks, and absorb depreciation. A cloud customer’s AI usage is valuable only after those costs and support obligations are covered.
3. Selling AI software, models and services
Software vendors can sell access to a model or application through a subscription, usage-based pricing, an enterprise license or professional services. Examples include document analysis, coding assistance, customer-service automation, forecasting and industry-specific tools. Service providers may combine model access with implementation, data preparation, governance and ongoing support.
The key economic question is whether price exceeds the cost of inference, hosting, support and customer acquisition. A product can attract users but remain unprofitable if each query is expensive or customers use it more heavily than the contract assumes. Look for paid seats, usage revenue, renewal rates and gross-margin disclosure rather than user counts alone.

4. Adding paid AI features to established products
A company with an existing subscription or software suite can charge more for AI features, create a higher-priced tier or include AI in a broader bundle. This approach may monetize AI without building a completely new customer relationship.

The figures cited for Microsoft do not isolate sales from individual AI features, so they cannot prove how much customers paid specifically for AI. A credible analysis should state whether the company reports a separate AI line, a product-level growth rate or only a broader segment total.
5. Using AI inside search, advertising, commerce or enterprise workflows
AI can support an older business model without appearing as a separate product. Alphabet says it incorporates AI into Search, including AI Overviews and AI Mode, and into Google Cloud solutions. In a model funded by advertising, better answers could alter user behavior, ad placement, click-through rates and pricing. The same change could also require more computing per query.
Alphabet warns that monetization may differ from historic offers and could affect revenue growth and margins. That warning captures an important distinction: more AI engagement is not proof of incremental profit. An AI answer might improve usefulness while reducing a conventional click, or it might increase commercial intent; the financial result has to be measured.
6. Improving efficiency and output
An operational user can make money from AI indirectly by lowering labor or service costs, increasing revenue per employee, shortening production cycles or improving asset utilization. A retailer might improve forecasting, an insurer might process claims faster and a software company might increase developer output. The monetization is the resulting change in the existing business, not necessarily a new AI invoice.

Nasdaq includes these companies as AI-adoption beneficiaries and operational users. Treat adoption announcements as an operating hypothesis until reported expenses, productivity, margins, revenue per worker or cash flow show that the benefit is real and durable.
Direct AI revenue versus AI-supported revenue
There are three evidence levels, and they should not be blended.
- Separate AI revenue: the company reports sales for an AI product, segment or service with enough detail to track it.
- AI-linked segment revenue: a broader segment contains substantial AI activity, but also includes non-AI products. NVIDIA’s Data Center and Microsoft Cloud figures fit this category.
- AI-supported business revenue: AI changes an established product or process, while the company reports only the overall business. Search, advertising and many enterprise workflows often fall here.
Use the narrowest description supported by the filing. Calling a broad cloud, advertising or data-center total “AI revenue” overstates what the company disclosed and makes companies impossible to compare fairly.

AI revenue is only one side of the investment case. Training and serving models can require large amounts of computing, electricity, networking, real estate and specialized equipment. Cloud providers also incur depreciation, maintenance, data-transfer costs, security expense and personnel costs. Software companies may face model-inference bills that rise with customer usage.

Evaluate the following measures together:
- Gross margin: whether each additional dollar of AI revenue leaves enough after compute, hardware or delivery costs.
- Operating margin: whether research, sales, support and infrastructure spending are being absorbed as revenue scales.
- Free cash flow: cash remaining after capital expenditure, especially when data-center investment is accelerating.
- Operating leverage: whether costs grow more slowly than revenue as usage expands.
- Return on invested capital: whether the returns justify the money tied up in equipment, facilities and working capital.
Alphabet specifically notes that AI compute requirements can increase infrastructure costs and affect margins. Revenue growth without an improvement in these measures does not establish attractive returns.
How to evaluate whether a company is genuinely an AI stock
- Map its value-chain role. Decide whether it sells hardware, provides cloud capacity, sells AI software, adds AI to an established product or uses AI internally.
- Find the matching financial line. Read the annual report and earnings release for a separate product, segment or operating metric. Record exactly what the company includes in that line.
- Label the evidence. Mark it as separate AI revenue, a broader AI-linked segment, management commentary or an operational claim. Do not treat all four as equivalent.
- Check the customer’s economics. Determine whether demand is recurring subscription usage, a one-time equipment purchase, a long-term cloud contract or an internal efficiency project.
- Measure spending alongside growth. Compare capital expenditure, data-center costs, depreciation and energy or hosting costs with revenue and cash flow.
- Test profit conversion. Review gross margin, operating margin, free cash flow and return on invested capital over more than one reporting period.
- Assess adoption quality. Separate paid, diversified customer demand from partnerships, pilot programs, user counts or promotional access. The available sources do not provide a comparable company-by-company customer-concentration measure, so do not invent one.
- Separate company facts from forecasts. Identify whether a number is reported, management guidance or a third-party projection, and keep the fiscal period attached to it.
How the major business models compare

What the named company figures do—and do not—prove
Microsoft
Microsoft’s fiscal 2025 Microsoft Cloud revenue of $168.9 billion and 23% growth show the scale and expansion of a broad cloud portfolio. Azure and other cloud services growth of 34% indicates strong momentum in that category. Microsoft describes its strategy this way in its 2025 annual report: “We create platforms and tools, powered by AI, that deliver innovative solutions that meet the evolving needs of our customers.” That statement characterizes the strategy; it does not quantify AI-generated revenue or profit.
NVIDIA
NVIDIA’s fiscal 2026 Data Center revenue of $193.7 billion, up 68%, shows substantial exposure to accelerated computing and AI demand. Because Data Center is broader than a standalone AI product line, use it as evidence of AI-related segment exposure rather than a pure-play AI sales figure.
Alphabet
Alphabet’s disclosure that AI is being incorporated into Search, AI Overviews, AI Mode and Google Cloud establishes product and platform exposure. It also highlights the possibility that new monetization patterns and higher compute requirements could change revenue growth and margins. Engagement or feature launches alone cannot establish incremental profit.
Common mistakes when labeling an AI stock
- Counting every mention of AI. A press release can describe an ambition; a financial statement shows where money is currently recorded.
- Calling a whole segment AI revenue. Broad cloud, advertising and data-center totals include non-AI activity unless the company explicitly separates it.
- Ignoring infrastructure costs. High demand can coexist with lower returns if capex, depreciation, energy and inference costs rise faster than sales.
- Confusing partnerships with sales. A announced collaboration or pilot is not the same as diversified, recurring customer revenue.
- Using growth as a verdict. Revenue growth does not prove attractive margins, free cash flow or returns on invested capital.
- Mixing fiscal periods and forecasts. Microsoft’s fiscal year ended June 30, 2025; NVIDIA’s cited figure is fiscal 2026; Alphabet’s filing covers calendar 2025; Nasdaq’s $700 billion figure is a 2026 projection. Keep those periods distinct.
A practical definition to use in your own analysis
Write the label as a complete sentence: “This is an AI infrastructure supplier,” “This is a cloud platform with AI demand,” or “This is an established business using AI operationally.” Then add the evidence: the reported product or segment, its period, what it includes, and the cost and cash-flow measures that determine whether the exposure creates value.
That discipline prevents a marketing label from replacing analysis. AI can produce direct sales, support an existing revenue engine or reduce costs inside a conventional business. Those are all legitimate forms of exposure, but they are different investment propositions.
