There is no universal vacation-food number. For a rough U.S. starting point, a 2025 Navy Federal guide cites about $58 per person per day, attributed to Pacaso. Treat that as a planning benchmark—not a current quote for your destination—because prices change with location, meal choices, party size, special dining, tips and delivery fees. The reliable method is to price the meals you actually expect to eat, multiply for your travelers and days, and then add the extras your itinerary makes likely.
Start with the meals on your itinerary
A budget becomes realistic when it mirrors a typical day rather than using one unexplained average. List breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and drinks for each day. Mark whether each item will be included with lodging or transportation, bought at a grocery store, packed as a picnic, purchased from a counter-service restaurant or ordered at a sit-down restaurant.

1. Write a representative day
Use the day you expect to repeat most often. A hotel breakfast, grocery-store lunch, quick dinner and two snacks produce a very different total from three restaurant meals. Make separate notes for unusually expensive days, such as a tasting menu, resort dinner or food-focused tour, rather than hiding them in an average.
2. Price the actual destination
Check current menus near the places you will visit and current grocery prices in the destination. A national benchmark cannot account for a resort town, an expensive capital city, a remote national park or a destination where cooking supplies are costly. USDA food plans can provide context for home-prepared food, but they are not restaurant-inclusive vacation budgets.

- Thermal Insulated: The lunch bag is made of insulated material which can keep food and drinks cool or warm for more than 4.5 hours. Besides, the interior lining is made of food grade PEVA foil so you can put your food into the bag directly without any worry. The built-in 2 mm EPE foam provides great protection to your containers, food and drinks
- Large Capacity: Dimensions - 10" ( 25.4cm ) × 6.7" ( 17cm ) × 8" ( 20.3cm ). The maximum capacity of lunchbox for adults is 9L, and is spacious enough to store 12 cans of coke (330ml), or your lunch such as sandwiches, salad, snacks, drinks and fruits and so on. It is suitable for office, for work, picnic, beach, trip.
- Leakproof & Waterproof: The exterior of lunch box for men is constructed out of 600D water-resistant dirt-proof Oxford fabric for durability and water proofing and easy cleaning. Even when full with water and ice, it holds fruits and drinks well, will not leak at all.
- Good Material: The lining of insulated lunch bag is made of PEVA foil that is dirt and wear resistant and won't melt easily when the lunchbox holds hot food. High quality strong zippers will minimize the possibility of breaking. Perfect for your needs of office and picnic food storage.
- Convenient & Portable: The lid of this cooler lunch bag can be opened up widely with strong two-way zippers, which means you can put your lunch container into the bag and take out of the bag vertically. Prevent liquids from leaking out of the container and soiling inside the bag. Tough handles and shoulder strap allows you to carry it easily. Moreover, the front and side extra pocket can hold small items like keys and earbuds
3. Multiply by people and days
Add the priced meals and snacks for one day, multiply by the number of travelers and then by the number of days. Adjust for children who will eat smaller portions, travelers with dietary restrictions and anyone following a different meal plan. A meal included with a hotel booking should be removed from the paid-meal total, while a breakfast that is merely “available” but not included should remain in it.
4. Add experiences and transaction costs
Put planned special meals on a separate line. Then add applicable tips, delivery charges and other fees. The Navy Federal guide does not establish whether its $58 benchmark includes every tax or incidental, so state your own assumption and leave a visible cushion if local taxes or service charges are uncertain.
5. Compare the result with your spending limit
If the total is above what you can spend, change the meal mix before the trip. Move one or two meals to groceries or a picnic, choose counter service on sightseeing days, or reserve the expensive restaurant for one evening. If the total is comfortably below your limit, keep the difference as protection against price changes and unplanned snacks rather than automatically increasing every meal.

Why a reasonable amount changes from trip to trip
Destination and season
Restaurant and grocery prices differ by country, city, neighborhood and season. Menus near major attractions may not resemble prices a few blocks away. Use prices from the locations and dates on your itinerary; an older national average is only a starting comparison.
Eating style
Groceries, packed lunches, street food, convenience food, counter service and full-service restaurants occupy different price levels. A kitchen or usable kitchenette can make self-catering practical, but include the cost of cooking staples, drinks and any supplies you would otherwise overlook.
Party size and individual needs
Every traveler needs a plan, even when portions differ. Families may spend less than a simple per-person multiplication suggests when young children share food, or more when teenagers need additional meals and snacks. Dietary restrictions, infant feeding and allergy-safe products can also change grocery and restaurant choices.

Special meals and add-ons
A celebration dinner, resort meal, tasting menu, room-service order or delivery can consume the amount saved by several inexpensive meals. Tips and delivery fees are easy to miss because they appear after the menu price; list them explicitly instead of treating them as an afterthought.
Included food
Breakfast included in a room rate, an airline meal or a tour-provided lunch reduces what you must buy, but only for that specific meal. Confirm what “included” means—full meal, continental breakfast, voucher or limited menu—before removing it from the budget.
Benchmarks: useful context, not interchangeable rates
| Source and date | Figure or method | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Navy Federal guide, 2025 | About $58 per person per day; the guide attributes the estimate to Pacaso. | A broad U.S. starting point. The cited passage does not provide the underlying sample, date range or precise inclusion of taxes and incidentals. |
| USDA food plans | Several cost levels for quantities of food intended to be purchased and prepared at home, updated for food-price changes. | Useful for grocery context. They do not represent restaurant-inclusive vacation spending. |
| RV Industry Association report, 2024 | A modeled four-person party (two adults and two children) used $53.71 per day in groceries, excluding alcohol. Modeled restaurant rates for listed destinations ranged from $59 to $79 per person per day. | Illustrates how grocery and restaurant components can be compared. Inputs came from USDA September 2022 costs and FY2023 GSA per-diem figures; the report assumed grocery cost did not vary by region, so it is not a current quote. |
| Guide to Iceland study, October 2026 | For Iceland, estimated daily per-person costs ranged from ISK 1,800–2,400 for cooking every meal to ISK 9,400–11,200 for mid-range restaurant eating all day. | A destination-specific illustration only. Currency conversions and local prices are time-sensitive and should not be generalized to another country. |
These figures measure different things: a consumer-finance benchmark, home-food plans, a historical model and a destination study. Combining them into one “average vacation cost” would create false precision.

How meal pattern changes a destination budget
The Iceland study shows the effect of meal choices while holding the destination constant. Its October 2026 estimates were:
| Daily pattern in Iceland | Estimated cost per person per day | What the pattern demonstrates |
|---|---|---|
| Cooking every meal | ISK 1,800–2,400 ($15–20) | Self-catering can be the lowest-cost pattern when accommodation and access to groceries make it practical. |
| Grocery meals plus one counter-service meal | ISK 3,700–4,800 ($30–39) | One paid meal raises the daily total without requiring restaurant dining all day. |
| Grocery breakfast and lunch plus a restaurant dinner | ISK 6,000–7,800 ($49–64) | Saving two meals for groceries can leave room for one substantial restaurant experience. |
| Mid-range restaurant eating all day | ISK 9,400–11,200 ($77–92) | Three restaurant meals can cost several times a cooking-focused day. |
The dollar equivalents are those reported by the study and are time-sensitive. They are not a recommended Iceland allowance for every traveler.

Using the U.S. benchmark as a check
Suppose two adults take a seven-day U.S. trip. Applying the $58 benchmark as a rough check gives $812 (2 travelers × 7 days × $58). That is not the final budget: subtract meals included with lodging, replace generic days with current menu and grocery prices, and add any special dinner, tips and delivery charges. The calculation is valuable because it exposes whether your detailed plan is broadly below or above the benchmark.

Planning for a family of four
Navy Federal gives an illustrative range of $120–$200 per day for a family of four eating quick meals and snacks. It is an example, not a universal family rate. For a five-day trip, that illustration would span $600–$1,000 before any special meals or fees. Rebuild the number from your own children’s portions, included breakfasts, destination prices and restaurant plans.
Separating ordinary days from an event meal
Make two lines in your worksheet: “regular day” and “special day.” Price the regular pattern from actual menus and groceries. For the special day, record the restaurant’s menu prices and your expected tip or service charge. This prevents one celebratory meal from disappearing inside a misleading daily average.
Ways to control the total without guessing
Use a deliberate meal mix
- Choose which meals are groceries, picnics, counter service and sit-down dining before departure.
- Reserve restaurant meals for experiences that matter to your group instead of defaulting to restaurants three times a day.
- Carry planned snacks and drinks for long outings. An optional insulated soft-sided cooler can help on road trips or picnic days; it is useful only when your itinerary supports carrying food safely.
- Check whether a lodging kitchen actually includes cookware, refrigeration and preparation space before relying on self-catering.
Look for value, but do not assume a discount
A National Restaurant Association survey of more than 1,000 consumers in May 2026 found that 90% considered affordability and convenient location important when choosing a vacation restaurant, while 70% looked for specials, discounts or value promotions. Those are reported preferences, not evidence that a particular promotion will reduce your bill. Verify the offer’s dates, exclusions and service charges.
The same survey reported that 98% of domestic summer travelers planned to use a restaurant and 79% wanted to experience local cuisine. Dr. Chad Moutray, the association’s chief economist, said, “Summer travel is one of the restaurant industry’s biggest demand drivers, and the data is clear: when consumers hit the road, restaurants are central to the trip.” If local food is part of your purpose, budget for it as an experience rather than treating every restaurant meal as an avoidable overspend.
Common budgeting mistakes and fixes
- Using a national average as a destination quote. Fix: price at least one breakfast, lunch and dinner near your actual itinerary.
- Counting only menu prices. Fix: add tips, taxes where applicable, delivery fees and other charges under a separate “extras” line.
- Ignoring snacks and drinks. Fix: list them by day, especially for children, road trips and long sightseeing periods.
- Assuming groceries always cost less. Fix: compare current grocery prices, cooking time, transport and waste with the price of a practical counter-service meal.
- Treating old modeled figures as current. Fix: label the date and assumptions of every benchmark; replace it with current local prices when making a booking decision.
- Hiding a special meal in the average. Fix: budget the event separately so ordinary days remain realistic.
- Multiplying one adult’s plan by everyone. Fix: adjust for children, shared dishes, dietary requirements and travelers who will eat different meals.
A pre-trip food-budget checklist
- Record destination, dates, traveler count and any children’s or dietary requirements.
- List each day’s breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and drinks.
- Mark every meal included with lodging, transport or an activity.
- Price planned restaurants from current menus and estimate groceries from current local prices.
- Choose which meals will be cooked, packed, counter-service or full-service.
- Multiply each daily plan by the appropriate travelers and number of days.
- Add special meals, tips, taxes, delivery fees and a clearly labeled contingency amount.
- Compare the result with your available trip budget and revise the meal mix before booking.
- Save the worksheet with the date and currency so you know which assumptions need updating.
The practical answer
A reasonable vacation food budget is the amount produced by your destination’s current prices and your actual meal pattern, not a universal daily rule. Use the $58-per-person-per-day U.S. benchmark from the 2025 Navy Federal guide only as a first-pass check, then replace it with priced meals, groceries, included food and clearly listed extras. That approach remains useful whether you cook most meals, mix groceries with counter service or make restaurants a central part of the trip.
