What Could Make a Quantum Computing Stock Investment Lose Value? The short answer is that either the business can disappoint or the market can lower the price it is willing to pay for the business. A company might miss a technical milestone, fail to turn a working system into recurring sales, spend cash faster than it can raise it, issue shares that dilute existing owners, or lose its technological edge. Even if the technology works, a stock can fall when expectations, funding assumptions or valuation multiples reset.
The practical question is therefore: what can go wrong in the underlying business, its financing or the market’s expectations? The risks below are illustrated with dated company filings and the European Securities and Markets Authority’s (ESMA) sector analysis. They are general information, not a valuation or personal investment recommendation.

1. A technical roadmap may take longer, cost more or fail
Quantum-computing companies are selling a future capability as much as a current product. Their plans depend on research breakthroughs, engineering improvements and reliable manufacturing. D-Wave’s fiscal 2025 filing says its business depends on research and development breakthroughs and warns that its product roadmap may not be achieved on schedule or at all. Quantinuum similarly says longer-term revenue depends on developing, producing and commercializing fully scalable, fault-tolerant systems.

More physical qubits, for example, does not by itself prove useful performance, error correction, fault tolerance, customer value or economical production. A delay can increase spending and push revenue further into the future; a failed milestone can invalidate the assumptions behind a stock’s valuation.

What to check
- Which architecture and technical metric does the company use?
- Has the milestone been independently demonstrated, or is it still a target?
- Does the result improve useful workload performance, error rates, uptime or cost?
- What engineering, manufacturing and supplier steps must follow before customers can use it?
2. Technical progress may not become commercial revenue
A demonstration, partnership announcement or pilot is not the same as a production customer paying repeatedly. The commercial path includes finding a useful application, integrating it with a customer’s systems, completing procurement and security reviews, deploying it in production, supporting users and collecting cash. D-Wave identifies referenceable applications, faster sales cycles and moving customers into production applications as important to growth. Rigetti reports that it has generated revenue but has not yet generated profits.
Revenue can also be too small, irregular or low-margin to cover research, manufacturing, sales and support costs. Investors should separate announced partnerships, bookings and demonstrations from recognized revenue, recurring demand, gross margin, renewal rates and cash collection. A technically impressive system can still produce a weak investment return if customers do not find a sufficiently valuable use case.
Commercial evidence that matters
- Revenue recognized in the financial statements, rather than an announcement or memorandum of understanding.
- Customer concentration and whether demand comes from repeat users or one-off projects.
- Production deployment, utilization and the time required to move from pilot to paid use.
- Gross margins after cloud, hardware, support and delivery costs.
- Whether applications solve a problem that classical computing cannot address economically.
3. Continuing losses can create a financing problem
Quantum hardware and software require sustained spending on design, fabrication, testing, research, hiring, facilities and customer infrastructure. Quantinuum’s Form 10-Q for the six months ended 30 June 2026 reports a loss from operations of USD 632.2 million. The same issuer reported a loss from operations of USD 199.3 million for the year ended 31 December 2025. D-Wave’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K reports net losses of USD 355.1 million in 2025 and USD 143.9 million in 2024.
These figures belong to different issuers and reporting periods and should not be compared as though they measure identical businesses. D-Wave notes that the difference between its operating and net losses was principally affected by mark-to-market charges related to publicly traded warrants. A net loss can therefore include accounting movements that do not equal current-period cash spending.

| Issuer and filing | Period | Reported measure | Amount | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Quantinuum, Form 10-Q | Six months ended 30 June 2026 | Loss from operations | USD 632.2 million | Issuer-reported operating loss for that six-month period |
| Quantinuum, Form 10-Q | Year ended 31 December 2025 | Loss from operations | USD 199.3 million | Prior calendar-year operating loss; not a like-for-like period with the six-month figure |
| D-Wave, Form 10-K | Year ended 31 December 2025 | Net loss | USD 355.1 million | Includes the company’s disclosed warrant-related mark-to-market effects |
| D-Wave, Form 10-K | Year ended 31 December 2024 | Net loss | USD 143.9 million | Prior-year net loss under the company’s accounting |
Quantinuum says it expects continuing operating losses while it invests in design, development, manufacture, testing, research and commercial infrastructure, and warns those efforts may not produce revenue or profitability. Its filing states: “Our business model is unproven and may never allow us to cover our costs.” The key shareholder question is not simply whether a company is losing money, but whether available cash and liquid investments can fund the planned work until commercial cash flow improves.
Runway questions for a current filing
- Read the latest balance sheet for cash, short-term investments and restricted cash.
- Compare operating cash use with the previous periods and with committed capital spending.
- List debt principal, interest rates, covenants and maturity dates.
- Review recent equity issuance, warrants, convertibles and equity-linked agreements.
- Check management’s stated spending plans against the cash available, without assuming a future financing is guaranteed.
4. Raising capital can dilute shareholders or add obligations
When a company sells additional common shares, each existing holder usually owns a smaller percentage of the business unless that holder buys enough of the new issue to maintain the percentage. Dilution can reduce a shareholder’s claim on future earnings, voting power and liquidation proceeds. The market may also treat a planned issuance as a signal that more cash is needed before profitability.
Other financing structures carry different risks. Debt adds interest and repayment requirements and may impose covenants. Convertible notes can create future share supply or conversion-price uncertainty. Warrants can increase potential dilution and produce accounting volatility, as illustrated by D-Wave’s disclosure about mark-to-market charges. Preferred securities or strategic investments may have liquidation preferences or other rights that rank ahead of common stock.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo not assume that every quantum company must raise money or that dilution is certain. Examine the particular issuer’s latest filings for authorized shares, outstanding instruments, registration statements, committed funding and debt maturities. A company with more cash, lower spending or a strategic parent may face a different financing path from a smaller standalone issuer.

5. Competition, alternative approaches and obsolescence can break an investment thesis
Quantum companies compete globally on performance, scale, speed, fidelity, accessibility, software, applications, price, financial resources and customer support. Rigetti lists these factors in its 2025 Form 10-K. Competition includes other quantum architectures, well-funded technology companies, specialist suppliers and improvements in classical computing that may solve a customer’s problem more cheaply.
D-Wave warns that functionality or integrations it develops may become obsolete and that new offerings may not gain market acceptance. A company can therefore execute its own plan and still lose value if a rival reaches a more useful error rate, a lower cost, better software or a stronger customer ecosystem. Avoid treating one architecture as certain to win. The relevant test is what each company has demonstrated and which future evidence would disprove its thesis.
Questions for comparing approaches
- What technical result has been delivered to customers, and what remains a management target?
- How much of the stack does the company control, including hardware, control systems, software and applications?
- Can it manufacture and service systems at the required scale?
- Does it have application expertise and customer support, not just laboratory capability?
- What classical or competing quantum alternatives could meet the same customer need?
6. A stock can fall when expectations are repriced
Share prices incorporate expectations about future revenue, technology, funding and market size. If an anticipated milestone arrives late, proves less useful than expected or requires more capital, investors may lower those expectations even while the company continues making progress. A high-growth multiple can contract independently of a change in current revenue.
ESMA’s report Quantum computing in financial markets: applications, investments and prospects, published 13 May 2026, says selected listed quantum-related companies experienced “repeated valuation surges followed by corrections.” ESMA also says pure-play firms remained early in commercialization and incurred significant losses. That is sector evidence, not a forecast for any single stock.

| ESMA observation | Period or date | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Combined market capitalization of four publicly traded quantum-related U.S. companies temporarily exceeded USD 65 billion | Late 2025 | Investor enthusiasm can produce very large sector valuations before mature economics are established |
| Weekly trading volumes for those selected stocks surpassed USD 70 billion | Late 2025 | Heavy trading can accompany rapid repricing in both directions |
| Quantum-themed ETFs collectively held USD 0.6 billion in assets under management | End of March 2026 | The dedicated fund market was still relatively small at the report date |
High volume is not protection against loss. It can make price changes faster when news, short-term speculation or changing interest-rate expectations alter demand for the shares. Investors should distinguish a company’s operating progress from the price already assigned to that progress.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. ETFs reduce single-stock concentration but keep sector risk
A thematic fund can spread exposure across pure-play quantum companies, larger technology firms with quantum programs and suppliers. That may reduce the damage caused by one issuer’s product failure or financing event. It does not remove technology, valuation, liquidity or market risk, and it can introduce management fees, rebalancing effects and exposure to companies whose quantum activity is only a small part of their business.
ESMA’s analysis reported USD 0.6 billion in combined assets for quantum-themed ETFs at the end of March 2026. It identified two comparable U.S. funds managing USD 3.3 billion and USD 0.03 billion, respectively, and described one as quantum-computing-and-machine-learning themed and the other as a recently launched pure-play quantum-computing fund. These are report-date figures, not current recommendations.
Recommended Free Tools
Before buying a fund
- Read the latest prospectus and holdings file; a fund name does not establish its current composition.
- Check the percentage in pure-play companies, large diversified firms and suppliers.
- Review concentration in the largest holdings, fees, turnover, spread and trading volume.
- Identify the benchmark and rules for adding or removing companies.
- Understand that diversification changes company-specific exposure, not the possibility of a sector-wide repricing.
8. A practical framework for comparing quantum-computing companies
Use the same questions for every issuer rather than ranking companies from a single milestone or headline. A comparison should cover five dimensions:
Best Value
- Twin-Ball Design : Hiacry gel pen features a double ball conical tip that reduces writing resistance and provides a stable and smooth writing experience. 0.7mm quick drying black ink ensures no jumping, leakage or seepage.
- Quick-Dry Long Lasting Ink:0.7mm black ink can slide effortlessly, dry immediately, & is not easily dirty. It has a high-capacity reservoir (up to 1300 meters), which is very suitable for left-handed & right-handed users.
- Sleek Design for Journaling & Planning: Engineered with a low center of gravity and precision tip for steady ink flow, these journaling pens excel at note-taking, sketching, planning, and more. They combine stylish pens with top-tier performance.
- Rolling Ball Design:The pocket clip with roll ball design can be easily attached to notebook pockets and binders, in addition, the fidget on the pen clip is also a small toy for your daily thinking to relieve stress.
- Comfortable Non-Slip Grip:The ergonomic pen barrel has a soft rubberized coating for a comfortable, non-slip grip, so you won't get fatigued even after long hours of writing.
| Dimension | Evidence to examine | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Technical approach and evidence | Architecture, demonstrated milestones, error performance, scalability and independent validation | Targets presented as though they were delivered capabilities |
| Commercial proof | Recognized revenue, customer concentration, repeat usage, production deployment and gross margins | Many announcements but little recurring revenue or cash collection |
| Financial endurance | Cash and liquid investments, operating cash flow, losses, debt, maturities, committed investment and share issuance | Rapid cash use with no clear financing capacity |
| Execution and competition | Manufacturing scale, suppliers, hiring, support, software, applications and classical alternatives | Dependence on one supplier, scarce talent or an unproven production process |
| Valuation and trading risk | Expectations embedded in the price, volatility, liquidity and events that could change those expectations | A price that assumes technical and commercial success before evidence exists |
Keep reporting periods aligned. A six-month operating loss should not be compared directly with a full-year net loss, and a booking should not be treated as revenue. Recheck the latest filing, share count, financing instruments, roadmap and fund documents before making a decision.
9. Direct answers to common investor questions
Can quantum-computing stocks go down even if the technology works?
Yes. Working technology may still arrive later than the price assumes, lack a profitable application, require expensive support or face a cheaper competing approach. The stock can also decline when a high valuation multiple contracts.
What happens to shareholders if a quantum company needs to raise money?
An equity offering can reduce each existing holder’s ownership percentage. Debt, convertibles and warrants can add interest, repayment, conversion or future-share risks. The effect depends on the instrument’s terms and the company’s cash needs; read the issuer’s current disclosures rather than assuming a particular outcome.

How do I compare quantum-computing companies?
Compare technical evidence, commercial proof, financial endurance, execution and competition, and valuation expectations using the five-part framework above. Keep each company’s architecture, reporting period and accounting measures distinct.
Are quantum-computing ETFs less risky than individual stocks?
They may reduce single-company concentration, but they still carry sector, valuation, technology and market risk. Holdings, concentration and fees change, so consult the fund’s current prospectus and holdings before investing.
