Bitcoin rallies when new demand and willingness to hold coins grow faster than available supply; it corrects when buyers step back, liquidity thins, or selling pressure overwhelms demand. The protocol limits how quickly new bitcoin enters circulation, so relatively small changes in demand can produce large price moves. That does not make any single catalyst—such as a halving, an exchange-traded product flow, or an interest-rate decision—a guaranteed explanation.
To understand a move, separate the immediate trigger from the longer-term condition: identify who was buying or selling, whether the news was a surprise, how much leverage and liquidity were present, and whether the event changed supply, demand, or only expectations.

How Bitcoin’s price is set
Bitcoin trades continuously across many venues. At any moment, the price is the level at which the next willing buyer meets the next willing seller. A rally does not require every holder to become bullish; it requires enough additional buying—or enough reluctance to sell—that sellers demand progressively higher prices. A correction is the reverse: marginal buyers disappear, and sellers accept lower bids to exit.
The supply visible to traders has two parts:
- Existing coins: bitcoin already held by investors, businesses, funds and long-term owners. The amount offered for sale can change quickly with sentiment, profit-taking or forced liquidation.
- New issuance: coins paid to miners under the protocol’s block-reward schedule. This flow cannot expand rapidly just because the price rises.
CME Group economists Bluford Putnam and Erik Norland described Bitcoin supply as “highly inelastic” and noted that inelastic supply increases volatility. When supply cannot respond quickly, a demand shock has to be absorbed mostly through price. The same mechanism works downward when demand weakens.

Price therefore reflects more than a headline. Expectations, positioning, leverage, market depth and the availability of easy buying or selling can determine whether identical news produces a rally one month and a decline another month.
Why Bitcoin rallies
A demand shock brings in new buyers
The most direct cause of a rally is an increase in net demand. New demand can come from people adopting Bitcoin for payments or saving, investors seeking exposure, institutions changing allocations, merchants accepting it, or traders speculating on higher future prices. If those buyers want more coins than current sellers are offering near the market price, bids move upward.
Demand can also rise without a large number of new participants. Existing holders may decide to sell less because they expect higher future adoption or because they are unwilling to part with their coins at current prices. A smaller available float makes each new order more influential.

Markets trade expectations. If investors believe adoption, access or future demand will improve, they may buy before the improvement is visible in usage data. When the anticipated event arrives, the price may rise further if the result exceeds expectations—or fall if it merely matches what traders had already priced in.
This is why a positive announcement can produce a sell-off. Traders who bought in advance may take profits once the news becomes official, while disappointed buyers decide that the remaining upside is smaller than expected. The direction depends on the gap between expectation and reality, not on whether the headline sounds positive.
Constrained issuance magnifies demand changes
Bitcoin’s issuance schedule means miners cannot rapidly create extra coins to meet a surge in buying. A small net increase in demand can therefore move the market disproportionately, especially when order books are thin or many holders are committed to holding. The effect can be amplified by momentum traders who interpret a rising price as confirmation and add to their positions.
Halving narratives can reinforce a rally
The protocol reduces the block reward every 210,000 blocks. The April 2024 halving cut the reward from 6.25 bitcoin to 3.125 bitcoin per block. SEC disclosures also describe an eventual limit of 21 million bitcoin. A halving reduces the rate at which new supply grows; it does not create buyers by itself.

A halving can support a rally when traders expect slower issuance and simultaneously see strengthening demand. It can fail to lift price when demand is weak, miners or other holders sell into the market, or the event was already fully reflected in prices. Treat it as a change in supply flow, not a self-contained investment signal.

Regulated products can widen access and create measurable flows
Exchange-traded products (ETPs), including spot products, give some investors a familiar regulated route to exposure without holding coins directly. The Federal Reserve’s 2025 analysis discusses the 2024 approval of rule changes that allowed regulated exchanges to list products referencing Bitcoin and Ether, and examines daily flows, liquidity and net-asset-value premiums.
Positive net creations can add a channel of buying. If a product issues shares and obtains the underlying exposure, that activity can contribute to market demand. The reverse is also possible: redemptions can create selling pressure, particularly when many investors exit together. An ETP approval expands access; it is not a one-way bullish force.
Speculation and momentum can accelerate an existing move
The SEC lists speculation among the factors that affect Bitcoin’s price. Traders may buy because the price is rising, attracting more buyers and creating a feedback loop. Derivatives and borrowed positions can increase the size of both gains and losses. Momentum can keep a rally going while liquidity is abundant, but the same positioning becomes a source of forced selling when price turns down.

Marginal buyers retreat
A correction can begin with no dramatic event. Buyers who were willing to pay higher prices pause, wait for a lower entry point or redirect capital elsewhere. Sellers then have to accept lower bids. Because Bitcoin trades continuously, a modest imbalance can become visible quickly.
Profit-taking increases available supply
After a strong advance, holders who bought earlier may sell part of their positions. Profit-taking is normal and does not prove that the long-term thesis has failed. It does, however, increase the coins offered near the market price. If new demand is not strong enough to absorb that supply, price falls until buyers return.
Leverage creates forced selling
Leveraged traders must maintain collateral. A decline can trigger margin calls or automatic liquidation, converting what began as discretionary selling into additional market orders. Those orders push price lower, causing more positions to breach collateral requirements. Thin liquidity makes this feedback loop sharper.
Negative information changes expected demand
SEC risk disclosures identify political and economic conditions, regulation, perceived scarcity, software development, competing platforms and speculation as influences on Bitcoin’s price. A regulatory restriction can reduce the number of potential buyers or raise the cost of trading. A security incident, technical dispute or competing network can change adoption expectations. Even when the underlying network is unchanged, a lower expected future demand can justify a lower present price.

ETF or ETP redemptions can reverse a flow-led move
Products that made buying easier also make selling easier. If investors redeem shares during a risk-off period, the resulting outflows can add to exchange selling. Watch the direction and persistence of flows rather than treating the existence of a product as permanently bullish.

Macro stress can turn Bitcoin into a risk asset
In a 2022 speech, Federal Reserve Vice Chair Lael Brainard said that crypto-assets had fallen by as much as 75% from the then all-time high and wrote: “Contrary to claims that crypto-assets are a hedge to inflation or an uncorrelated asset class, crypto-assets have plummeted in value and have proven to be highly correlated with riskier equities and with risk appetite more generally.” That observation describes the stress period she was discussing; it is not a permanent rule that Bitcoin must track stocks.
A 2023 Federal Reserve Bank of New York staff report provides an important counterpoint. Its event-study sample found Bitcoin “orthogonal to monetary and macroeconomic news,” meaning the measured response was not a simple one-to-one reaction to those announcements in that sample. Relationships can change with the time period, event definition, liquidity and prevailing investor positioning.
Does the halving make Bitcoin rise?
No. The halving reduces the flow of newly issued bitcoin, but price still depends on whether demand absorbs both that new flow and coins offered by existing holders. A useful way to think about it is:
- The halving lowers potential new supply from miners.
- Traders form expectations about the lower issuance and may buy ahead of the event.
- If actual demand is stronger than the market expected, the reduced supply growth can help produce a rally.
- If demand disappoints, macro conditions deteriorate or holders sell more, the price can remain flat or decline despite the lower issuance.
Historical narratives often assign a rally to the halving after the fact. That does not establish that the halving alone caused the move. A causal assessment would need a defined period, market data and controls for other information arriving at the same time.
Are Bitcoin ETFs pushing the price up?
They can contribute to upward pressure when creations generate sustained net buying, but the answer is empirical rather than automatic. Evaluate the channel in four parts:

| Were the flows already expected? | A widely anticipated approval or allocation may be priced in before the official event. |
The Federal Reserve’s 2025 note specifically considers liquidity, daily flows and NAV premiums. Those variables help distinguish genuine new demand from a headline-driven price reaction. A product can widen access while still experiencing outflows during a correction.
Do interest rates affect Bitcoin?
Interest rates matter indirectly through the broader risk regime, the opportunity cost of holding a volatile asset and the availability of leverage. When investors become more defensive—because financing is expensive, liquidity is contracting or risky assets are being reduced—Bitcoin can be sold alongside other speculative assets. When risk appetite and liquidity improve, demand can return.

There is no reliable mechanical rule such as “a rate cut makes Bitcoin rise” or “a rate hike makes it fall.” The New York Fed event-study result shows why simple formulas are unsafe: the measured relationship to monetary and macroeconomic news was not stable or one-to-one in its sample. A rate decision that is less restrictive than expected may help risk assets, while a cut prompted by severe economic stress may coincide with selling. Always compare the decision with expectations and with the reaction in equities, credit and liquidity.

How to explain a specific Bitcoin rally or crash
Use this sequence instead of assigning the entire move to the most visible headline.
1. Define the move
Specify the start and end dates, the reference market and whether you are describing an intraday jump, a multiday trend or a decline from a peak. A 4% intraday move and a 75% drawdown are different phenomena requiring different evidence.
2. Identify the immediate order-flow change
Ask whether buyers became more aggressive, sellers became more urgent, or both. Look for evidence of sustained inflows, exchange activity, liquidations and changes in market depth. A headline without a measurable change in trading behavior is an incomplete explanation.

3. Separate supply-flow effects from demand effects
Classify the event. A halving changes new issuance. An ETP creation changes an access and flow channel. An adoption announcement changes expected future demand. A liquidation cascade changes near-term selling pressure. Keeping these categories separate prevents a demand story from being mistaken for a supply change.
4. Check what was already expected
Compare the actual announcement with prior forecasts, positioning and market pricing. A positive result can cause a decline if traders expected something even better. Conversely, a modest result can spark a rally if expectations were unusually pessimistic.
5. Check leverage and liquidity
Large price moves are easier when order books are thin or positions are crowded. Forced liquidations can explain why a move continued after the original news had been absorbed. They describe the transmission mechanism, not necessarily the original cause.
6. Compare the market regime
Check whether equities, credit and other risk-sensitive assets were also rising or falling. Broad risk-off behavior makes a macro explanation more plausible, while an isolated Bitcoin move points toward crypto-specific flows, regulation, technology or positioning. Correlation is evidence of a shared regime, not proof that one market caused the other.

No single horizon invalidates another. A long-term adoption trend can coexist with a short-term liquidation, and a favorable supply change can be overwhelmed temporarily by a risk-off shock.

Common explanations that need qualification
“The halving guarantees a bull market.”
It does not. The halving is a predictable reduction in new issuance. It helps only if demand is sufficient and other selling pressure does not dominate.
“Institutional products can only push price higher.”
Access works in both directions. Creations can bring buying; redemptions can bring selling. The net flow and its persistence matter.
“Bitcoin is always an inflation hedge.”
Brainard’s 2022 remarks show that Bitcoin behaved like a risk asset during that stress period, falling with riskier equities. A different period can produce a different relationship, so the hedge claim should not be treated as a constant.
“One news item caused the entire move.”
Price changes usually reflect several forces: expectations, liquidity, leverage and concurrent market events. A credible explanation states what is documented and what remains uncertain.
“A large percentage drop means the network failed.”
Price and protocol operation are different questions. A correction can result from portfolio de-risking, forced liquidation or changing expectations without a corresponding failure of the network’s rules. Conversely, a technical or regulatory problem can matter if it changes future demand.
A beginner’s practical checklist
- Write down the exact date range and percentage move.
- Ask whether the change was in new supply, existing-holder selling, new demand or access to the market.
- Check whether the event was expected and how traders were positioned beforehand.
- Look for sustained ETP inflows or outflows rather than a single headline.
- Check leverage, liquidations and liquidity before calling a move a fundamental trend.
- Compare Bitcoin with broader risk assets to identify the prevailing risk regime.
- Use official filings and dated central-bank or academic analysis for factual claims; label interpretations as interpretations.
- Do not turn a retrospective explanation into a forecast or a guaranteed trading rule.
What the evidence can and cannot tell you
Bitcoin’s price is the result of changing marginal supply and demand, filtered through expectations and market structure. The available evidence supports several mechanisms—constrained issuance, demand shocks, ETP flows, leverage and changing risk appetite—but it does not support a universal percentage assigning every rally or correction to halvings, flows, interest rates, regulation or sentiment.
For an event-specific conclusion, define the period, collect the relevant market and flow data, compare the result with expectations, and distinguish correlation from causation. That approach explains why Bitcoin moved without pretending that a volatile market has a single permanent driver.
