A technology company’s bond yield is a warning system, not a default forecast. Separate the yield into a comparable Treasury (or swap) rate and the issuer’s spread, then test that spread against ratings, interest coverage, leverage, maturities, liquidity, rate exposure and covenants. A high yield can reflect higher market-wide rates or illiquidity; a rapidly widening spread alongside weakening cash-flow metrics is a much stronger credit warning.
Start by separating the benchmark rate from the company’s risk
The headline yield on a corporate bond combines several components:

For a U.S.-dollar, five-year technology bond, compare it with a five-year U.S. Treasury or an appropriate swap rate—not with a two-year Treasury or a euro benchmark. If Treasury yields rise, every corporate yield can rise even when the issuer’s financial condition is unchanged.

The spread is the bond’s yield minus that benchmark. It captures compensation investors demand for the issuer’s probability of loss, uncertainty, trading liquidity, and the possibility that the bond will be hard to refinance. The Federal Reserve presents corporate yields by rating and discusses spreads relative to Treasury benchmarks, which is why the spread—not the headline coupon or yield alone—is the useful starting point.
Compare the spread in three ways:
- Against the company’s own history, using the same or closely comparable issue.
- Against bonds with similar ratings, seniority, maturity and sector.
- Against the broad market, to see whether the move is company-specific or part of a risk-off episode.
A high spread generally means investors require more compensation, but it does not establish that default is imminent. A narrow spread can also understate danger if markets are complacent or the bond trades infrequently.
Read the spread’s direction and the market backdrop
Widening spreads
A widening spread means required compensation has increased. Investigate the trigger rather than treating the move as a conclusion. Company-specific causes include falling earnings, higher leverage, a rating downgrade, litigation, execution problems or a large acquisition. Market-wide causes include recession fears, higher volatility, reduced dealer inventory and a broad rise in credit-risk premia.

Tightening spreads
A tightening spread usually indicates improving demand or a lower perceived risk premium. It can reflect better operating results or a ratings upgrade, but it can also be caused by a market rally that lifts many issuers at once. Check whether the company’s spread narrowed more or less than its peer group.

Why the market regime matters
The Financial Stability Oversight Council reported in 2024 that spreads over Treasuries were near their tightest levels in three years. In a tight-spread environment, a technology bond may offer little compensation for a sudden deterioration, even if its yield looks attractive relative to older issues. The same report said higher borrowing costs had reduced aggregate interest-coverage ratios while they remained healthy overall. That combination—expensive refinancing but still-adequate aggregate coverage—calls for issuer-level analysis rather than a market-wide assumption.
Test whether operating earnings can service the debt
Interest coverage
The Federal Reserve defines interest coverage as EBIT divided by interest payments. EBIT is earnings before interest and taxes; the ratio estimates how many times operating earnings cover contractual interest.
Use a multi-period trend. A falling ratio leaves less room for a weak product cycle, a margin squeeze or higher refinancing costs. Compare reported EBIT coverage with:

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Cash interest actually paid, because accounting interest can differ from cash requirements.
- Free cash flow after capital expenditure, especially for chip, cloud and data-center businesses with heavy investment needs.
- Lease obligations and other fixed charges that compete for the same cash.
- Interest expense under the company’s refinancing assumptions, not only the current coupon.
The Federal Reserve’s historical series shows aggregate coverage falling to slightly below 2.5 during the 2001 recession and recovering to roughly 5–6 before 2020. Those are economy-wide reference points, not a safe threshold for an individual issuer. A company with volatile earnings, a concentrated maturity wall or substantial floating-rate debt may need a much larger cushion.

Leverage and cash generation
Pair coverage with gross and net debt relative to EBITDA or operating cash flow. Gross debt shows the contractual burden; net debt subtracts cash but can overstate protection when cash is trapped overseas, needed for working capital or held in a volatile business. Examine whether EBITDA growth is recurring or depends on cost cuts, a temporary pricing spike or aggressive adjustments.
Coverage can look stable while risk rises if debt is growing faster than cash earnings. Conversely, a temporarily low coverage ratio may be less alarming when a company holds substantial unrestricted cash and has no near-term maturities. The direction, composition and timing matter more than a single quarter.
Map the maturity wall and the interest-rate mix
Fixed-rate debt
Fixed-rate bonds do not reprice immediately when market rates rise. Their cost becomes a problem when principal is rolled over. A company can therefore report a low current interest burden while facing a much higher refinancing bill in a few years.
Floating-rate debt
Floating-rate borrowings reprice quickly with their reference rate, subject to any hedges, floors or caps. Lumen Technologies disclosed about $6.0 billion of unhedged SOFR-linked debt and estimated that a hypothetical 100-basis-point increase in SOFR would reduce annual pretax earnings by approximately $60 million. This is a sensitivity illustration from its 2024 Form 10-K, not a prediction of where SOFR will go. It demonstrates how to translate a rate move into earnings pressure.

Build a maturity schedule
List principal due in each year, coupon type, call dates and whether each issue is secured or unsecured. Then compare those obligations with cash, operating cash flow, committed revolvers and commercial-paper backstops. A cluster of maturities in a year of weak demand creates refinancing risk even when today’s spread is modest.
- Extract principal due by year from the debt footnote.
- Separate fixed, floating and hedged portions.
- Identify bonds that can be called or put before legal maturity.
- Subtract only cash that is available for debt service.
- Stress the rollover years using a higher spread and benchmark rate.
Use liquidity disclosures to judge refinancing flexibility
Liquidity determines whether a company can bridge a difficult market. Review unrestricted cash, revolver capacity, borrowing-base limits, financial covenants, commercial-paper programs and expected free cash flow. Also check whether facilities contain material adverse-change provisions or rating-linked pricing.
Intel reported $51.0 billion of aggregate principal amount of senior unsecured notes and other borrowings as of December 28, 2024. It also disclosed credit facilities and a commercial-paper program, and issued $2.6 billion of senior notes during 2024. The scale of those figures makes the maturity schedule and access to capital markets central to the risk assessment, not secondary details.
Intel’s filing cautions that debt-service obligations and rating changes can reduce flexibility and raise borrowing costs. Its wording is explicit: “These fluctuations, together with our debt level and related debt service obligations, could have the effect of … increasing the risk of a future downgrade in our credit ratings that can impact the value of our outstanding debt and increase our borrowing costs.” Treat that as management’s disclosed risk, then test it against actual debt, cash flow, facilities, ratings and spread behavior.

Interpret ratings, seniority and covenants together
Ratings and outlook
A rating and its outlook summarize agency analysis of default risk, but they are not a complete conclusion. A negative outlook or watch status can precede a downgrade and increase future funding costs. Compare the rating direction with the bond’s spread: a widening spread before a formal downgrade may be an early market signal, while a stable spread after a downgrade may indicate that the news was already priced.
The Federal Reserve reported in 2024 that corporate-bond defaults had moved up and that rating downgrades outpaced upgrades in leveraged loans. Those observations describe credit conditions broadly; they do not assign a default probability to any particular technology issuer.
Seniority and recovery
Two bonds from the same company can have different risk because one is secured, guaranteed or senior to the other. Unsecured notes rank behind secured claims in a liquidation. A lower yield on a secured issue may reflect better expected recovery rather than a healthier issuer.
Covenants
Read limits on additional debt, restricted payments, liens, asset sales and change-of-control transactions. A bond with sparse maintenance covenants may permit more financial flexibility but offer investors less protection. IBM’s filing illustrates why covenant and ratings language must be read alongside yield: legal protections and capital-structure changes can alter recovery and refinancing risk even when the coupon is unchanged.
A practical comparison framework for two technology bonds
| Axis | What to compare | Why it changes risk |
|---|---|---|
| Benchmark-adjusted spread | Spread to the same-currency, similar-maturity Treasury or swap | Isolates more of the issuer-specific premium |
| Rating and outlook | Agency ratings, direction and watch status | A downgrade can raise future funding cost |
| Interest coverage | EBIT/interest and cash-interest coverage trend | Measures the operating cushion |
| Leverage | Gross and net debt relative to EBITDA or cash flow | Indicates balance-sheet burden |
| Maturity wall | Principal due in each year and refinancing concentration | Concentrated maturities increase rollover risk |
| Rate type | Fixed, floating, hedged or unhedged exposure | Determines the speed of rate pass-through |
| Liquidity | Cash, revolver capacity and commercial-paper backstop | Determines the ability to bridge maturities |
| Seniority and covenants | Secured/unsecured status, guarantees, restricted payments and change-of-control terms | Affects recovery and financial flexibility |
| Market liquidity | Issue size, trading activity and bid-ask conditions | Illiquidity can widen yields without equal credit deterioration |
Step-by-step workflow for analyzing a bond yield
- Identify the exact issue. Record issuer, currency, maturity, coupon, callable features and seniority. A “technology-company yield” is not meaningful without these details and a timestamp.
- Choose the matched benchmark. Use a same-currency Treasury or swap with comparable duration.
- Calculate the spread. Subtract the benchmark yield from the bond yield, and record the result with the date and market conditions.
- Check the spread trend. Compare the issue with its own history and similar bonds to distinguish company news from a market-wide move.
- Read the latest financial statements. Track EBIT, interest expense, cash interest, free cash flow, gross debt, net debt and capital expenditure over several periods.
- Map maturities and rate exposure. Mark principal due, fixed versus floating debt, hedges, call dates and refinancing years.
- Assess liquidity. Add unrestricted cash, committed facilities and reliable operating cash flow; exclude cash that is restricted or needed to run the business.
- Review ratings and legal terms. Note outlook or watch status, security, guarantees, covenants and change-of-control provisions.
- Stress the weak points. Ask what happens if EBIT falls, the benchmark rate rises, the spread widens or a maturity cannot be refinanced on schedule.
- Write a conditional conclusion. State whether the yield appears driven mainly by benchmark rates, issuer credit, liquidity or a combination, and identify the indicator that would change your view.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Calling every high yield “default risk.” First remove the benchmark-rate component and inspect liquidity and trading conditions.
- Using the wrong benchmark. A mismatched maturity or currency can create a misleading spread.
- Relying on one coverage ratio. Use a trend and compare accounting EBIT with cash obligations.
- Ignoring refinancing. Fixed-rate debt can become expensive when rolled over, even if its current coupon is low.
- Overlooking floating-rate exposure. Unhedged debt can reduce earnings before a bond reaches maturity.
- Treating ratings as verdicts. Agencies may lag market pricing, while spreads can also be distorted by illiquidity.
- Confusing issue-level and issuer-level risk. Security, guarantees and covenants determine where a bond sits in the capital structure.
- Comparing stale prices. Record the yield, spread and liquidity conditions at the same time; thinly traded bonds may show old quotes.
What a yield cannot tell you by itself
No single live yield applies to “a technology company” without naming the issuer, issue, currency, maturity and timestamp. A yield also cannot reveal recovery value, covenant protection or the exact timing of a refinancing. Those answers come from the debt footnote, credit agreement, offering memorandum, rating reports and cash-flow statements.
The most defensible conclusion is therefore conditional: a high or widening spread raises a question about compensation for risk; worsening coverage, rising leverage, concentrated maturities, floating-rate sensitivity or weak liquidity determine how serious that question is.
