1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBond duration is an estimate of how much a bond’s market price may change when interest rates change. A higher duration generally means a larger percentage price move for the same change in yields. It is quoted in years, but it is not the bond’s maturity and does not tell you when principal will be repaid. Use duration to isolate interest-rate sensitivity, then evaluate credit quality, liquidity, inflation, call or prepayment features, convexity, and your investment horizon before deciding whether a bond or bond fund fits.
What bond duration tells you
Duration answers a practical question: if market yields move, how sensitive is this bond investment’s price likely to be? It combines the timing and size of a security’s expected cash flows into a single measure. The larger the number, the more a given yield change is expected to affect the market value.

FINRA describes duration as being stated in years but “not simply a measure of time.” That distinction matters. A duration of five does not mean your principal will be returned in five years. It means the investment has an estimated sensitivity to interest-rate changes that can be summarized by the number five.

For fixed-rate bonds, prices and market yields generally move in opposite directions. When newly issued bonds offer higher rates, existing bonds with lower coupons become less attractive unless their prices fall enough to provide a comparable yield. When market yields fall, existing higher-coupon bonds generally become more valuable.

Duration is therefore most useful as a comparison and scenario tool. It can help you judge whether a short-duration fund, an intermediate bond, or a long-duration portfolio is more exposed to a rate shock. It cannot, by itself, tell you whether the issuer will repay, whether you can sell quickly, or whether the investment will preserve purchasing power.
How to estimate a bond’s price reaction
For a relatively small, parallel change in yields, the standard first-order approximation is:
Approximate percentage price change ≈ − modified duration × change in yield

Express the yield change as a decimal. A one-percentage-point increase is 0.01, not 1.
| Modified duration | Yield change | Approximate price change | Illustration |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | +1 percentage point (0.01) | −5% | A $10,000 position would be estimated at about $9,500 immediately after the move, before considering convexity, credit changes, fees, or other effects. |
| 5 | −1 percentage point (−0.01) | +5% | The same simplified calculation indicates an increase of about 5%. |
| 10 | +1 percentage point (0.01) | −10% | FINRA uses a 10-year-duration bond fund and a 10% decline as an illustrative scenario, not a current fund statistic or guarantee. |
These figures are estimates, not promised results. The relationship is not perfectly linear, particularly for large rate moves or securities whose expected cash flows change as rates change. Convexity describes the curvature in the price-yield relationship. A bond’s actual return can also be affected by coupon income, reinvestment rates, credit spreads, trading costs, taxes, and changes in the issuer’s creditworthiness.

Why duration is not the same as maturity
Maturity is the contractual date when the face value is due, assuming the issuer pays as promised. Duration reflects the timing and sensitivity of all expected cash flows, including coupons and principal. A bond that pays substantial coupons earlier can have a shorter duration than another bond with the same maturity but a lower coupon.
Yield, coupon rate, remaining maturity, payment frequency, and any call or redemption provisions can all influence duration. Two bonds that mature on the same date can therefore have different duration measures and different reactions to the same rate move.
The SEC’s investor bulletin on fixed-income investments illustrates the price effect without presenting it as a universal duration calculation: a fixed-rate Treasury example starts with a 3% market rate and a $1,000 bond price. When market rates rise to 4%, the illustrated price falls to $925 with nine years remaining. That 2013 SEC example is educational, not a current quote or a prediction for every nine-year bond.
Longer-maturity bonds generally have more interest-rate risk than otherwise similar shorter-maturity bonds. Lower coupons can also increase sensitivity when other characteristics are held constant. Those are broad tendencies, not substitutes for checking the actual duration and terms of a security.
The three duration measures you may see
| Measure | What it represents | When it is useful | Important caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Macaulay duration | A cash-flow-timing measure that weights each payment by when it is expected to arrive. | Understanding the underlying timing of a conventional bond’s payments. | It is not the direct percentage-price-sensitivity figure used in the basic rate-shock formula. |
| Modified duration | An adjustment to Macaulay duration that estimates percentage price sensitivity to a change in yield. | Making a first-order estimate for a conventional, option-free bond or portfolio. | The estimate becomes less reliable for large yield changes and securities with changing cash flows. |
| Effective duration | A sensitivity measure that allows expected cash flows to change when rates move. | Bonds or funds with calls, puts, prepayments, or other embedded options. | Do not treat it as interchangeable with Macaulay or modified duration; check the issuer’s definition and assumptions. |
Fund fact sheets and analytics providers may label the number simply “duration.” Before comparing two investments, confirm which definition is reported, the date of the figure, and whether it applies to the whole portfolio or a particular share class or mandate.

What can make a duration estimate misleading?
Large or non-parallel rate moves
The simple formula assumes a small, broadly parallel shift in the yield curve. If short-term and long-term rates move by different amounts, a single duration number cannot describe every part of the change. Large moves also expose the limits of a linear estimate; convexity can make the actual gain or loss differ materially from the calculation.
Callable and redeemable bonds
An issuer may be able to repay a callable bond before its stated maturity. If rates fall, the issuer may refinance and redeem the bond, preventing the investor from receiving the higher coupons for as long as originally expected. Effective duration is generally more informative than a simple option-free measure in this situation.
Mortgage and prepayment risk
Mortgage-backed securities provide a prominent example. When rates fall, homeowners may refinance and repay mortgages carrying higher rates. The security’s expected cash flows then change, potentially limiting its price rise. FINRA cites this type of behavior when explaining why convexity and changing cash flows matter.
Credit-spread changes
Duration isolates sensitivity to a change in the relevant yield, but a bond’s spread over a benchmark can change independently. If investors become more concerned about an issuer, the spread may widen and the price may fall even when government yields are unchanged. Conversely, improving credit sentiment can support the price.
Liquidity and transaction costs
A theoretical price change may not equal the price at which you can actually sell. Thinly traded issues can have wide bid-ask spreads, limited buyers, or temporarily unavailable quotations. Duration does not measure those trading conditions.

Duration is only one part of bond risk
A low-duration bond or fund can still lose money. FINRA explicitly cautions that low duration does not make an investment risk-free. Use a broader risk check:
- Default and credit risk: Can the issuer make scheduled interest and principal payments?
- Inflation risk: Could rising prices reduce the purchasing power of future coupons and principal?
- Liquidity risk: Can you sell at a fair price when you need cash?
- Call, redemption, and prepayment risk: Can cash flows end or change when rates move?
- Reinvestment risk: If coupons or principal arrive early, what rate will be available for reinvesting?
- Market-value risk: What price could you receive before maturity, even if the issuer remains sound?
- Fund-structure risk: Does the fund continually trade and replace securities, rather than holding one bond to a fixed maturity?
Government backing, where applicable, concerns the issuer’s payment obligations; it does not guarantee that a bond’s market value will be unchanged if you sell before maturity.
Individual bonds and bond funds behave differently
Holding an individual bond to maturity
If you can hold an individual bond until maturity and the issuer pays as promised, interim market-price changes may matter less to the amount of principal you ultimately receive. You still face default risk, inflation risk, reinvestment risk, and the opportunity cost of being locked into the bond while rates change. Selling early exposes you to the then-current market price, which duration helps approximate.
Owning a bond fund
A bond fund generally holds a portfolio and continually buys and sells securities. It does not normally have one maturity date at which all investors receive a fixed principal amount. The fund’s published duration can change as holdings, yields, maturities, coupons, and option assumptions change. A rate shock can therefore affect the fund’s net asset value, while distributions and later portfolio purchases affect subsequent returns.
Recommended Free Tools
When reading a fund report, look for the measurement date and the section often labeled Bond Holding Statistics. A duration number is a snapshot of the portfolio’s estimated sensitivity at that time, not a permanent promise.

How to find the duration of a bond or fund
- For a bond fund, open the latest fact sheet. Search for “Bond Holding Statistics,” “Portfolio Characteristics,” or a similar holdings section. Record the date beside the duration figure.
- Identify the measure. Confirm whether the fact sheet reports Macaulay, modified, effective, or another defined duration. Do not compare unlabeled figures as though they were identical.
- Check the portfolio context. Note the fund’s maturity profile, credit quality, coupon exposure, government or corporate allocation, and the presence of callable or mortgage-backed holdings.
- For an individual bond, gather complete inputs. You may need coupon rate, payment frequency, price or yield, maturity date, call schedule, and expected cash flows.
- Ask the issuer or an investment professional, or use an online calculator. Verify that the calculator’s output matches the security’s actual cash flows and that its label identifies the duration type.
- Run a scenario that matches your concern. Multiply modified duration by the proposed yield change as a decimal, reverse the sign, and label the result as an approximation.
- Stress-test the exceptions. For callable, mortgage-backed, or otherwise option-sensitive securities, ask whether effective duration and convexity assumptions are available and how they might change under the scenario.
How to compare two bonds or funds responsibly
Start with duration when your question is specifically about interest-rate sensitivity, but hold other important variables as constant as possible. A comparison that ignores those variables can produce a false sense of precision.
| Comparison factor | Question to ask | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Duration definition | Are both figures modified, effective, or Macaulay duration, and are they measured on similar dates? | Different definitions can describe different sensitivities. |
| Yield-curve exposure | Are the portfolios exposed to the same parts of the curve? | A single duration number may hide different short-, intermediate-, and long-term rate exposures. |
| Maturity and coupon | How long do the securities run, and how much coupon cash flow arrives before principal? | Cash-flow timing influences duration and price behavior. |
| Credit quality | What are the issuers’ credit profiles and default exposures? | Credit-spread changes can move prices independently of government yields. |
| Options and prepayments | Can issuers redeem bonds, or can borrowers prepay? | Expected cash flows may change as rates move. |
| Liquidity | How readily could you sell, and at what bid-ask cost? | Quoted sensitivity does not capture the cost of exiting. |
| Holding horizon | Will you need the money before the expected maturity or fund holding period? | Near-term selling makes market value more important than an investor who can hold an individual bond to maturity. |
Worked examples and how to read them
A modest rate increase
Suppose a conventional bond fund reports modified duration of 4. A parallel 0.50-percentage-point rise in yields is 0.005. The first-order estimate is −4 × 0.005, or approximately a 2% price decline. That calculation does not include the coupon distribution you may receive, and the actual result can differ because of convexity, changing spreads, portfolio turnover, and non-parallel movements.
A larger shock
With modified duration of 8, a 2-percentage-point increase produces a simple estimate of −8 × 0.02, or −16%. The size of this move is exactly why a linear duration estimate should not be treated as a forecast. Convexity becomes more important, and a fund’s holdings and duration may change while the market is moving.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A falling-rate environment for a callable security
A basic duration calculation might suggest a substantial price gain when yields fall. If the bond is callable, however, the issuer may redeem it and replace the high-cost debt. Your cash flows can end sooner, so the realized gain may be smaller than an option-free calculation implies. Effective duration is designed to account for such rate-dependent cash-flow changes, subject to the model’s assumptions.
Using duration to match a portfolio to your time horizon
Duration becomes more actionable when it is compared with when you may need the money. An investor with a near-term spending need has less time to wait for prices to recover after a rate shock and may prefer to limit exposure to large duration swings. An investor with a long horizon may tolerate more interim volatility, but still must weigh credit losses, inflation, liquidity, and the possibility that rates or cash flows do not follow expectations.
Do not infer a guaranteed recovery date from the duration number. Duration is a sensitivity estimate, not a promise that a bond or fund will return to a particular price after a particular number of years. For an individual bond, the contractual maturity and issuer’s ability to pay remain central. For a fund, holdings and duration can evolve continuously.
A practical pre-purchase and monitoring checklist
- Write down the rate change you are trying to assess and whether it is a parallel move or a specific part of the yield curve.
- Record the duration number, its definition, and its measurement date.
- Apply the modified-duration formula only as an estimate, with the yield change expressed as a decimal.
- Review maturity, coupon, yield, and expected cash flows rather than relying on duration alone.
- Check for calls, puts, sinking funds, mortgage prepayments, or other features that make effective duration relevant.
- Evaluate issuer credit quality, default exposure, inflation sensitivity, and liquidity.
- Decide whether you can hold through price volatility or might need to sell early.
- For a fund, revisit the latest fact sheet because duration and holdings can change.
- For an individual bond, distinguish the price you could receive today from the principal due at maturity if the issuer pays as promised.
Key takeaways
Duration is best understood as an interest-rate sensitivity gauge. Higher duration generally implies a larger percentage price move for a given yield change, and the modified-duration formula provides a quick first estimate. The number is quoted in years but is not a maturity date, a forecast, or a complete risk score.
Use the duration measure that fits the security, especially effective duration when options or prepayments can change cash flows. Pair it with convexity, credit quality, liquidity, inflation and reinvestment risks, and your need for cash. That combination turns duration from a misleading headline number into a useful part of a bond-risk decision.
