Short answer: Berkshire Hathaway’s portfolio can show which reportable securities Berkshire disclosed at a particular past date. It can provide a useful clue about where investment capital was allocated and, when read with Berkshire’s shareholder letter, reveal the company’s stated capital-allocation framework. It cannot tell you what Berkshire owns today, why every trade occurred, whether a stock is undervalued, or whether you should buy it.
What Berkshire’s portfolio actually is
Most discussions of Berkshire Hathaway’s stock holdings rely on Form 13F-HR, a regulatory report filed by institutional investment managers that meet the applicable reporting threshold. The form lists specified Section 13(f) securities held at the end of a reporting quarter. It is a dated disclosure, not a live portfolio screen.

The latest filing located for this article covers the quarter ended June 30, 2026, and was filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on August 14, 2026. Those dates answer two different questions: June 30 is the snapshot date for the reported holdings, while August 14 is when the public received the filing. A trade made on July 1, July 20 or August 13 would not necessarily appear in that June 30 snapshot.

The filing’s information table generally identifies a security, the number of shares or principal amount reported, and the market value attributed to the position at quarter end. Amendments can change a previously filed report. The practical result is that a 13F is best read as historical evidence with a known time stamp.

What the filing can tell you
A dated list of disclosed positions
You can identify reportable securities Berkshire disclosed for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, along with the amounts shown in the filing. That is useful for reconstructing what was publicly reported at that point in time and for comparing one filing with another.
A clue about capital allocation
A disclosed position indicates that some Berkshire investment capital was allocated to that security at the reporting date. It can help you see which companies represented large or small portions of the disclosed equity portfolio. It is still only a clue: the filing does not provide Berkshire’s investment memo, expected return, purchase price, or confidence level.
A starting point for further analysis
Once you know a security was disclosed, you can investigate its business economics, valuation, competitive position and risks independently. Berkshire’s shareholder communications can add context about the company’s general approach to investing and capital allocation, but they do not explain every individual line item.
What a 13F cannot tell you
| Question | What the filing establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| What does Berkshire own now? | What was reported at the quarter-end snapshot, subject to amendments. | The portfolio after quarter end or after the filing date. |
| Why was the position bought or sold? | That a reportable position appeared, disappeared or changed. | The reason, timing, target return or investment thesis. |
| Is the stock cheap? | The reported share amount and market value at the specified date. | Berkshire’s current estimate of intrinsic value or expected performance. |
| Does Berkshire own everything associated with the company? | Only securities covered by Form 13F rules and included in the report. | Operating businesses, cash, Treasury securities outside the report’s scope, or omitted and confidential positions. |
| Should an individual investor buy? | Evidence that Berkshire disclosed an institutional holding. | Suitability for your goals, time horizon, risk tolerance, taxes or diversification. |
Form 13F covers specified securities rather than every asset on Berkshire’s balance sheet. SEC instructions also allow certain small positions to be omitted, and SEC procedures permit confidential-treatment requests in appropriate circumstances. Consequently, the public list is not a complete inventory of Berkshire’s assets or investment activity.

How current is Berkshire’s 13F?
The 45-day reporting timetable
Under the SEC’s Form 13F instructions, a manager that meets the reporting threshold generally files within 45 days after year-end and within 45 days after each of the first three calendar quarters. This built-in delay means a quarterly report is already up to six weeks old when published, and market activity can continue during and after that interval.
Reading the two dates correctly
- Start with the period ended date. Treat June 30, 2026 as the date to which the holdings data relate.
- Note the filing date. August 14, 2026 is the date the information became available in the SEC filing.
- Assume an information gap. Berkshire could have changed the position between June 30 and August 14, or after August 14.
- Check for amendments. If the SEC record includes an amended filing, use the corrected information rather than an earlier version.
If you are asking, “Does Berkshire still own this stock?” the precise answer is usually “The latest public 13F showed it at the quarter-end date.” A filing alone cannot confirm the position on the day you are reading it.
Why the shareholder letter adds context
Berkshire’s 2025 shareholder letter describes a long-horizon framework for decisions to expand existing businesses, acquire businesses, invest in equities or repurchase Berkshire stock. The company says it considers whether an action can grow intrinsic value per share over time. Its listed principles include understanding the business, identifying durable advantages, assessing long-term prospects, relying on high-integrity leaders, concentrating capital in high-conviction ideas, maintaining discipline and allowing compounding to work.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The letter states: We deploy our shareholders’ capital to opportunities that generate rewards commensurate with their risk.
This is Berkshire Hathaway’s stated principle, not a disclosure of the rationale for each security in the 13F. A broad philosophy can help you interpret why a durable, understandable business might fit Berkshire’s approach; it cannot prove that a particular holding was selected for any one reason.

The same letter says, Our cash and U.S. Treasury holdings now exceed $370 billion.
That figure is Berkshire’s reported 2025 figure. It includes capital supporting insurance operations and protection against extreme scenarios while also providing dry powder for future opportunities. It should not be presented as a live 2026 balance, and it is not part of a simple “stocks Berkshire owns” list.
What Berkshire’s reported numbers show about the wider company
The portfolio is only one part of Berkshire’s capital-allocation picture. In its 2025 shareholder letter, Berkshire reported $44.5 billion in operating earnings, compared with $47.4 billion in 2024 and a five-year average of $37.5 billion. It also reported $46 billion in net cash flows from operating activities, versus a five-year average of more than $40 billion.
Berkshire cautions that GAAP net earnings can swing substantially from year to year because realized and unrealized investment gains and losses flow through the results. The company identifies operating earnings as its preferred measure for assessing annual business performance. That distinction matters when someone tries to judge a stock purchase solely by a change in Berkshire’s reported investment gains.

| Company | Reported market value at December 31, 2025 | How to interpret the figure |
|---|---|---|
| Apple | $61.962 billion | A dated market value in Berkshire’s 2025 letter, not a current valuation. |
| American Express | $56.088 billion | A year-end 2025 reported value; subsequent share prices or trades can change the position. |
| Coca-Cola | $27.964 billion | A historical portfolio-table value, not a statement that the stock is cheap today. |
| Moody’s | $12.603 billion | A reported December 31, 2025 market value, subject to later price and share-count changes. |
Market value combines the number of shares with the market price used for the reporting date. A higher value in a later table could result from a rising share price rather than additional purchases. Conversely, a lower value could reflect a falling price rather than a sale. You need the share count and the relevant dates before inferring a trade.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare two Berkshire filings without overreading them
- Align the reporting dates. Compare quarter end with quarter end, not a quarter-end figure with a later filing-date price.
- Compare share counts first. A changed share count is stronger evidence of buying, selling or another position adjustment than a changed market value alone.
- Separate price movement from transactions. Recalculate how much of the value change could be explained by the stock’s price move during the period.
- Confirm the security is reportable. A position may be absent because it falls outside Section 13(f) coverage, is below an applicable reporting threshold, is omitted under the rules or is subject to confidential treatment.
- Look for company context. Read Berkshire’s shareholder letters and other filings for stated capital-allocation principles, while recognizing that general principles do not establish the motive for one trade.
- Check amendments and corporate actions. Splits, mergers, conversions and amended filings can change how a position appears without representing a straightforward buy or sell decision.
A position appearing for the first time, disappearing, or changing size is therefore an observation to investigate, not proof of intent. The filing does not tell you whether the decision was made recently, by which investment professional, at what price, or with what expected holding period.
Does Berkshire ownership make a stock a buy?
No. Berkshire’s disclosure may be a useful idea generator, but it is not an individual recommendation. Berkshire evaluates opportunities with its own capital base, tax position, liquidity needs, insurance obligations, time horizon and risk capacity. Your circumstances can be entirely different.
Before acting on a disclosed holding, assess:
- Valuation: What price are you paying relative to realistic cash flows and alternative investments?
- Business economics: Does the company have durable advantages, sensible reinvestment opportunities and financial resilience?
- Risk: What could permanently impair the business or your investment thesis?
- Portfolio fit: Would the position improve or weaken your diversification by industry, geography, currency and company size?
- Time horizon: Can you hold through periods when the market price falls or the thesis takes longer than expected?
- Personal constraints: How do taxes, liquidity needs and account type affect the decision?
A stock can be a sensible Berkshire holding at one price and an unattractive purchase for you at another. The filing supplies a lead; your analysis must supply the decision.

A practical workflow for using the portfolio responsibly
Step 1: Record the disclosure precisely
Write down the security, reported shares or principal amount, market value, period ended date, filing date and whether the filing is amended. Do not label the number “current” without a newer source.
Step 2: Build a timeline
Mark the quarter end, filing date, major price moves, earnings releases and any corporate actions. This prevents you from treating a delayed disclosure as if it were a real-time trade alert.
Step 3: Investigate the business independently
Read the company’s own financial statements and disclosures. Examine revenue quality, margins, debt, competitive position, management incentives and the assumptions required to justify the current share price.

Use Berkshire’s letters to understand its declared emphasis on intrinsic value, durable advantages, long-term prospects, integrity, concentration, discipline and compounding. Treat those statements as a framework, not a transaction explanation.
Step 5: Make a personal portfolio decision
Decide whether the security fits your allocation, risk limits and objectives. If the answer depends mainly on Berkshire continuing to own it, the thesis is based on an uncertain and delayed signal rather than on the business itself.
The bottom line for interpreting a Berkshire holding
Berkshire Hathaway’s portfolio is valuable as a transparent, time-stamped record of reportable securities and as a window into where disclosed capital was allocated. Its 13F does not provide a live inventory, a complete balance sheet, a manager’s private reasoning or a ready-made buy signal. Use the filing to generate questions, verify the dates and share counts, read Berkshire’s broader communications, and then judge the stock on its own economics and your own circumstances.
