Custom AI chips are processors designed for particular artificial-intelligence workloads and for the data-center systems that run them. Cloud companies build them so they can tune computing, memory, networking, software, power and cooling around their own services instead of relying entirely on general-purpose processors from outside suppliers.
For most customers, these chips are not components you can buy and install. They are accessed through a cloud provider’s services or run behind that provider’s products. Whether a custom accelerator is a better choice than a conventional GPU depends on the model, workload, software stack, region, capacity and total cost—not on a single peak-performance number.

What “AI chip” means
“AI chip” is an umbrella term, not one architecture. A CPU remains the flexible processor used for operating systems, databases and general cloud tasks. A GPU can execute many operations in parallel and is widely used for model training and inference. A purpose-built accelerator narrows the design further, adding hardware and software features for selected neural-network operations or serving patterns.
Custom chips are therefore best understood as part of a complete system. The silicon may be optimized for matrix arithmetic, but practical performance also depends on high-bandwidth memory (HBM), memory capacity, the links between chips, the way servers are assembled into racks or pods, compilers and kernels, and the power and cooling available in the facility.

Training and inference are different jobs
Training develops or updates a model by processing large data sets and adjusting its parameters. It usually requires sustained throughput across many processors, frequent communication between them and substantial memory bandwidth.
Inference uses a trained model to produce an answer, prediction or generated passage. Interactive inference can be sensitive to response latency and to the amount of memory needed for long prompts. Batch inference may prioritize throughput and cost per result. A chip that is excellent for one of these jobs may not be the best choice for the other.
Why cloud companies design their own silicon
Co-design with the data center
A cloud provider controls more than a processor. It operates servers, networking, storage, orchestration software and managed AI services. Designing the accelerator alongside those layers lets the company target the bottlenecks that matter in its own fleet rather than accepting the compromises of a general-purpose product.

More capacity and less supplier dependence
The UK Competition and Markets Authority’s Cloud Infrastructure: Final decision report, published July 31, 2025, describes proprietary accelerators as a potential differentiator for cloud providers. The report also says self-supply can reduce reliance on third-party suppliers, especially when demand for widely used GPUs exceeds available supply.

That is a strategic reason, not proof that every custom chip is cheaper or faster than every alternative. A provider still has to pay for design, software enablement, manufacturing, validation and data-center deployment. The economic result depends on utilization and the workload that actually runs.
Economics at fleet scale
When a provider deploys millions of processor-hours, even a modest improvement in energy use, rack density or utilization can matter. The relevant accounting is total cost for useful work: accelerator time, host servers, memory, networking, electricity, cooling, software engineering and idle capacity. A headline peak number does not reveal that total.
Control over product strategy
Owning the hardware roadmap can let a provider shape capacity and features around its own AI services. It can also create a second source of compute inside the company’s infrastructure. Customers may benefit from additional instance types, but they also need to evaluate whether their frameworks and models work well on a less familiar architecture.
How the major programs differ
The following figures come from the companies’ own announcements or from the CMA’s description of their programs. They use different generations, precision formats, workloads and system configurations, so they are not a cross-vendor ranking.
| Program | Primary stated focus | Published specifications or roadmap | How it is accessed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google TPU and Trillium | Training and serving models | Google describes Trillium as its sixth-generation TPU. In a 2024 announcement, it reported 4.7× higher peak compute per chip than TPU v5e, twice the HBM capacity and bandwidth, twice the inter-chip interconnect bandwidth, and more than 67% greater energy efficiency than TPU v5e. | Google says TPUs are available through Google Cloud; the CMA describes them as used internally and offered through that cloud. |
| AWS Trainium and Inferentia | Trainium for training and inference; Inferentia for inference workloads | Amazon presents the chips as part of a custom-silicon effort spanning more than a decade. Specific performance figures in the supplied material are not stated. | The CMA says the accelerators are available to AWS customers rather than sold as standalone retail chips. |
| Meta MTIA | Meta’s ranking and recommendation systems, with a multi-generation AI roadmap | Meta’s March 12, 2026 roadmap covers MTIA 300, 400, 450 and 500. MTIA 300 is in production for ranking and recommendation training; MTIA 400 has completed lab testing and is headed toward data-center deployment; MTIA 450 is scheduled for mass deployment in early 2027 and MTIA 500 in 2027. Meta reports that from MTIA 300 to MTIA 500, HBM bandwidth rises 4.5× and compute FLOPS rises 25×. | These chips primarily support Meta’s own services and infrastructure; the cited roadmap does not describe a retail purchase channel. |
| Microsoft Maia 300 | Inference-first workloads, including long-context and memory-intensive decode | Microsoft’s October 12, 2026 announcement describes Maia 300 as the third generation of the Maia program, with eight HBM4 stacks, 18.0 TB/s peak memory bandwidth and a 950-watt thermal design power (TDP). | The CMA describes Maia as part of Microsoft’s own services and cloud infrastructure. |
Vendor-reported improvements are useful for understanding each design goal, but they are not independent benchmarks. A 4.7× peak-compute comparison against an earlier product, for example, does not establish a 4.7× advantage over a current GPU on your model.

What matters besides the processor
Memory capacity and bandwidth
Large models can be limited by how much parameter and activation data fits in memory. Long-context inference can repeatedly move large amounts of data, making bandwidth important even when arithmetic throughput is ample. Check both capacity and bandwidth; a chip with more compute but insufficient memory may require splitting a model across devices.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Interconnect and scale-up
Training and large-model serving often use multiple accelerators. The links between chips, servers and racks determine how quickly parameters, activations and gradients move. A provider’s “per-chip” number says little about a distributed job if communication becomes the bottleneck.
Precision and usable compute
Accelerators advertise performance at particular numerical formats. Confirm which precisions your framework and model can use while maintaining acceptable output quality. Theoretical operations per second at a format you cannot deploy are not useful capacity.
Software compatibility
Migration effort can outweigh a hardware difference. Evaluate framework support, compiler maturity, operator coverage, kernels, debugging tools and libraries for your model. A provider may offer an optimized path for common architectures while an unusual operation falls back to slower code.
Availability and operations
Check whether the accelerator is offered in the cloud region you need, whether capacity can be reserved, and what happens during shortages. At data-center scale, power and cooling limits can constrain deployment even when chips are available on paper.

How customers actually use custom accelerators
The physical chips designed by Google, Amazon and Microsoft are generally not sold as retail components. The CMA’s July 2025 report says customers access them through those providers’ cloud infrastructure; Google separately says TPUs are exclusively available through Google Cloud. Microsoft Maia is deployed in Microsoft services and Azure infrastructure. AWS Trainium and Inferentia are offered as AWS cloud instances.
That access model changes the buying decision. You select an instance or managed service, deploy a workload and pay for consumption or a reservation under the provider’s commercial terms. You are evaluating useful throughput, latency, availability and engineering effort rather than the purchase price of a board.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are custom AI chips better than GPUs?
There is no universal winner. GPUs offer broad ecosystem support and flexibility across many model types. A custom accelerator may deliver a strong result when the provider has optimized its hardware, compiler and network for your exact workload. The same accelerator may be less attractive if your model uses unsupported operations, requires frequent changes or must run across several clouds.
Compare equivalent conditions:
- Workload: training, fine-tuning, batch inference or interactive serving; include model architecture, batch size and sequence length.
- Quality target: numerical precision and any accuracy or latency requirement.
- System scale: one device, one server, a rack or a larger cluster.
- Software effort: porting, testing, monitoring and maintaining kernels and dependencies.
- Commercial reality: regional availability, reservation terms, utilization and the cost of idle capacity.
Run the same representative workload under the same quality and service-level requirements whenever possible. Do not combine a vendor’s peak compute claim for one generation with another vendor’s measured result for a different system and call the difference a savings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA practical evaluation process
- Describe the job precisely. Record whether it is training, fine-tuning or inference; expected traffic; batch size; sequence length; model size; and latency or throughput targets.
- List hard requirements. Note memory capacity, supported numerical formats, framework versions, required operators, data location and the cloud regions you can use.
- Shortlist accessible hardware. Include conventional GPU instances and any custom accelerator available in your required region. Physical-chip availability is not the same as cloud-instance availability.
- Test software before optimizing hardware. Port a representative model, measure compilation and warm-up time, check unsupported operations and verify output quality.
- Measure end-to-end results. Capture tokens or samples per second, response latency, utilization, failure rates and the amount of host and network capacity consumed.
- Calculate total cost per useful result. Include accelerator charges, storage and data movement where applicable, engineering time, reserved capacity and any cost of underutilized instances.
- Plan for supply and portability. Confirm capacity commitments and keep a tested fallback architecture if an accelerator is limited to one provider or region.
Common misconceptions and failure modes
“Custom” means universally faster
Custom means optimized for chosen goals. It does not mean superior for every model. A design aimed at recommendation ranking, for example, may not suit a large generative model with different memory and communication patterns.

A higher TDP is a performance guarantee
TDP describes a thermal and power design target, not delivered work per dollar. Microsoft’s published Maia 300 figure of 950 watts must be considered alongside its memory system, utilization and the facility that houses it.
Peak FLOPS equals application speed
Application speed can be limited by memory, communication, input pipelines or software. Meta’s 25× compute-FLOPS increase from MTIA 300 to MTIA 500 is a roadmap specification comparison, not a promise that every model runs 25 times faster.
Cloud access removes lock-in
Using an accelerator through a cloud API avoids buying hardware, but software dependencies can still create switching costs. Keep model export, checkpoint formats and a fallback deployment path in your architecture when portability matters.

What this means for a cloud customer
Custom AI chips expand the menu of cloud compute; they do not eliminate the need for workload testing. Start with the model and service requirement, then compare complete systems. A provider’s accelerator can be financially sensible when it delivers higher utilization or lower cost per result for your workload, but those savings must be demonstrated under your traffic and quality constraints. The most reliable decision is based on measured end-to-end performance, software effort and capacity risk rather than an isolated specification.
