A mutual fund Risk-o-meter is a regulatory, visual label that places a scheme in one of six assessed-risk categories: Low Risk, Low to Moderate Risk, Moderate Risk, Moderately High Risk, High Risk, or Very High Risk. It is a useful starting point for screening and monitoring a fund, but it is not a prediction of returns, a guaranteed measure of capital loss, or a personal recommendation. Check the latest dated label, the portfolio behind it, the relevant benchmark label, and your own ability to tolerate losses before investing.
What the mutual fund Risk-o-meter tells you
The Risk-o-meter is a standardized disclosure attached to a mutual-fund scheme. Its purpose is to give investors a quick indication of the scheme’s assessed risk at the time of disclosure. Instead of requiring a reader to infer risk from a fund name or a marketing description, the label presents an ordered category from Low Risk to Very High Risk.

The label describes the scheme, not you. It does not decide whether the investment fits your goal, time horizon, income, emergency reserves, tax position, or willingness and capacity to withstand a fall in value. Those questions require information outside the Risk-o-meter.

The six Risk-o-meter categories
Current scheme disclosures enumerate six levels. They are intended to be read as an ascending scale of assessed scheme risk:
| Category | How to read it | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Low Risk | The lowest category on the six-level scale. | It does not guarantee that the investment cannot lose value or that returns will be positive. |
| Low to Moderate Risk | A step above Low Risk on the ordered scale. | It does not state a fixed loss probability, return range, or suitable holding period for every investor. |
| Moderate Risk | A middle category in the six-level classification. | It does not mean the fund will behave like every other fund carrying the same label. |
| Moderately High Risk | Higher assessed risk than Moderate Risk. | It does not predict a particular drawdown, annual return, or recovery time. |
| High Risk | A high position on the scale, signaling greater assessed risk than the categories below it. | It is not a promise that a loss will occur, nor does it quantify the size or timing of one. |
| Very High Risk | The highest category expressly listed in the cited scheme disclosures. | It does not by itself prove that the scheme is unsuitable for every investor or that a specific return is likely. |
Think of the categories as a common language for comparing a scheme with its own earlier disclosures and with other schemes. They are not six investment products with uniform holdings or identical behavior.
Why some pages say there are five categories
An official investor explainer has an internal inconsistency: it refers to five categories but then lists six, including Very High Risk. Scheme disclosures and other regulatory material expressly enumerate all six labels. When you encounter conflicting counts, use the six-category list shown in the scheme’s current disclosure and quote the labels themselves rather than relying on the incorrect count.

The cited scheme disclosure says the Risk-o-meter is evaluated monthly. The rating and the portfolio disclosure are to appear on the asset-management company’s and the Association of Mutual Funds in India’s websites within ten days after the end of each month. A scheme can therefore carry a different label from one month to the next as its assessed risk changes.
When the rating changes, the cited disclosure says unitholders are informed through a notice and by email or SMS. Do not assume that a label seen in an old factsheet is still current. Always identify the month or date printed beside the rating and match it with the latest available portfolio disclosure.

A practical date check
- Find the scheme’s latest monthly factsheet, portfolio disclosure, or product page on the asset-management company’s website.
- Record the month-end date or publication date shown beside the Risk-o-meter.
- Check whether the portfolio information covers the same reporting period.
- If the latest month has ended but the disclosure is not yet posted, treat the previous label as the most recently published assessment, not as a guarantee that the current month is unchanged.
What the label can and cannot tell you
What it can do
- Give you a fast, standardized risk signal before you read the full scheme documents.
- Help you notice that a scheme’s assessed risk has moved over time.
- Provide a common reference when you compare the scheme with its benchmark and with other funds.
- Prompt a closer look at holdings, concentration, maturity, credit exposure, equity exposure, currency exposure, or other strategy-specific risks described in the portfolio and documents.
What it cannot do
- Forecast the scheme’s return for a month, year, or market cycle.
- Guarantee repayment of your invested capital.
- State a fixed probability that you will lose money.
- Tell you how large a fall could be or how long recovery might take.
- Replace analysis of the scheme’s objective, strategy, costs, liquidity, taxation, and portfolio.
- Measure your personal risk tolerance or capacity for loss.
These limits matter because a single visual category compresses a large amount of information. Use it to decide what to investigate next, not as the only reason to buy, hold, or sell.
How to use the Risk-o-meter before investing
1. Start with the scheme’s own current label
Read the exact category and its date on the scheme’s latest disclosure. A label without a date is incomplete information because the assessment is monthly. Note whether the category is different from the previous month’s disclosure and investigate the reason in the portfolio or fund commentary.

The portfolio is the reality that the label summarizes. Look at the securities or instruments held, their weights, sector or issuer concentration, credit quality where relevant, maturity profile for debt exposures, equity allocation, foreign-currency exposure, derivatives, and cash or liquid holdings. Also read the scheme objective and investment strategy so that you know what the manager is permitted to own, not only what was held on one reporting date.
A portfolio is a dated snapshot. Holdings can change after the reporting date, so use the newest disclosure available and avoid treating one month’s allocation as a permanent promise.
3. Check the benchmark’s Risk-o-meter
SEBI’s disclosure requirements call for the scheme and benchmark Risk-o-meter to accompany scheme-versus-benchmark performance information for investors holding the scheme. The benchmark label adds context: it helps you see whether the scheme is being compared with an index that carries a similar or different assessed risk.

Do not use the benchmark label as a substitute for reading the scheme. A fund can deviate from its index through its portfolio, cash position, costs, tracking approach, active decisions, or permitted investments. Treat the two labels as context for the performance comparison, not as proof that the scheme and benchmark will move together.
4. Compare like with like, without assuming identical risk
When two schemes carry the same category, compare their actual characteristics rather than treating the shared label as an equivalence certificate. A scheme information document filed with SEBI states: “Therefore, the schemes falling under the same level of risk in the Riskometer may not be similar in nature.” The same document advises investors to consider performance, portfolio, fund managers, and the asset manager in addition to product labelling.
For a disciplined comparison, place these items side by side:
| Comparison item | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Current Risk-o-meter | What is the latest category, and what month does it cover? |
| Recent movement | Has the category changed in recent monthly disclosures, and is there an explanation? |
| Portfolio composition | What assets, issuers, sectors, maturities, currencies, or concentrations drive the exposure? |
| Objective and strategy | What is the scheme allowed to do, and how closely does the current portfolio follow that mandate? |
| Performance context | How has the scheme performed against its relevant benchmark over appropriate periods, with the dates and methodology shown? |
| Fund manager | Who manages the scheme, and what information is available about the management arrangement? |
| Asset manager | What information, governance, and disclosures does the asset-management company provide? |
5. Match the information to your own situation
After reviewing the scheme, ask whether a temporary or prolonged fall would interfere with your goal. Consider when you need the money, how much loss you could absorb without selling in distress, whether you have an emergency fund, and whether the scheme’s strategy is understandable to you. A scheme-level label cannot answer those personal questions.
This is not a recommendation to choose any particular category. Someone saving for a near-term obligation may have little capacity to tolerate volatility, while someone with a long horizon and substantial reserves may be able to accept more fluctuation. The same Risk-o-meter category can therefore lead to different decisions for different investors.

Using the rating to monitor an existing holding
The Risk-o-meter is not only a pre-purchase filter. Add the latest monthly label to your regular review of the fund.
- Save the current and previous month’s category and dates.
- Read the accompanying portfolio disclosure for material changes in allocation, concentration, credit quality, maturity, or currency exposure.
- Review the scheme-versus-benchmark performance disclosure and the two risk labels shown with it.
- Check whether your goal date, cash-flow needs, or ability to tolerate a loss has changed.
- Investigate a changed label; do not automatically redeem solely because the category moved, and do not automatically hold solely because it did not.
A change can be a prompt for investigation rather than an instruction to transact. The appropriate response depends on why the assessment changed and whether the holding still fits your plan.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Treating “Low Risk” as “no risk”
“Low” is the bottom of this six-level scale, not a guarantee against loss. Market prices, interest rates, credit events, liquidity conditions, currency movements, and other factors can affect a scheme’s value. Read the scheme documents for the risks relevant to its strategy.
Reading the category as a return forecast
The labels rank assessed risk; they do not promise high returns for high categories or low returns for low categories. Do not convert a category into an expected annual return or a probability of loss.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAssuming two funds with the same label are interchangeable
The official scheme wording expressly warns that schemes at the same level may not be similar. Compare holdings, objective, benchmark, manager, and asset manager before drawing a conclusion.

Using an outdated factsheet
Because the assessment is monthly, an old label may no longer describe the current assessment. Check the month, the latest portfolio, and the publication window after month-end.
Confusing the scheme label with personal suitability
The Risk-o-meter describes a scheme-level assessment. It does not know your goal date, other assets, debt, income stability, tax circumstances, or emotional response to losses. Make those decisions separately.
Assuming the benchmark label proves tracking or safety
The benchmark provides comparison context. It does not eliminate scheme-specific risks or guarantee that the fund will match the benchmark’s movements.
How the Risk-o-meter fits with other documents
Use the label as the first layer of a document review. The scheme information document and other current disclosures explain the investment objective, permitted assets, principal risks, fees, liquidity provisions, and operational details. The monthly portfolio shows what the scheme actually held at the reporting date. Performance disclosures place results beside the relevant benchmark and, where required, show both scheme and benchmark Risk-o-meter labels.
The cited SEBI circular is titled “Circular on Product Labeling in Mutual Fund schemes – Risk-o-meter.” The material available for this explanation does not set out the detailed annexure calculations, input weights, or thresholds. Do not infer a precise formula from the visual label or from a fund’s name. For methodology questions, consult the complete current regulatory circular and the scheme’s own disclosure.
A repeatable decision checklist
- Date: Do I know the month covered by the latest label and portfolio?
- Category: Which of the six labels is shown?
- Change: Has the label moved since the prior monthly disclosure?
- Portfolio: What holdings and concentrations create the exposure?
- Benchmark: What is the benchmark’s label in the performance disclosure?
- Comparison: Have I checked objective, performance context, manager, and asset manager rather than relying on the shared label?
- Personal fit: Could I tolerate a loss or a long recovery without disrupting my goal?
- Documents: Have I read the current scheme and portfolio disclosures rather than an undated summary?
If any answer is “no,” the Risk-o-meter has done its job as a prompt for further investigation, but you do not yet have enough context to make a well-informed decision.
Bottom line
The mutual-fund Risk-o-meter is a monthly, six-level regulatory snapshot of a scheme’s assessed risk. Use the latest dated category to screen and monitor a fund, then verify the portfolio, scheme documents, benchmark label, performance context, fund manager, and asset manager. Never treat the category as a guaranteed outcome, a fixed chance of loss, or a substitute for judging whether the investment fits your own goals and capacity for loss.
