There is no defensible answer to “which stock is cheaper” from the available figures alone. A valid Wendy’s-versus-McDonald’s comparison needs the same market-close date, share prices, diluted share counts, cash, debt, lease liabilities and matching trailing or forecast earnings. The available company filings and releases provide important operating data, but not a common-date valuation snapshot for both stocks as of October 2026.
You can still compare the businesses rigorously. Start with consistently calculated P/E and EV/EBITDA multiples, then test what those multiples imply about same-store sales, franchise economics, growth, margins, leverage, leases and dividend capacity. A lower multiple may signal deteriorating results or higher risk rather than a bargain.

What “cheaper” means for Wendy’s and McDonald’s stock
“Cheaper” is not a property of a ticker symbol by itself. It describes the price investors pay for a defined measure of earnings, cash flow, sales or enterprise value at a specified date.

The basic calculation is share price ÷ earnings per share. A trailing P/E uses earnings from a completed period, usually the last four quarters. A forward P/E uses an estimate for a future period. You must identify the estimate provider, publication date and forecast year; a forward multiple is not company guidance unless management actually issued that guidance.

Use the same earnings basis for both companies. For example, comparing Wendy’s adjusted EPS with McDonald’s GAAP diluted EPS can make one multiple look artificially low. State whether EPS is GAAP or adjusted, whether it is diluted, and which fiscal period it covers.
Enterprise-value-to-EBITDA (EV/EBITDA)
EV/EBITDA compares the value of the operating business with a cash-earnings proxy:
enterprise value = equity value + debt + other relevant claims − cash
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
EV/EBITDA = enterprise value ÷ EBITDA
Include the same categories of debt, lease obligations, preferred interests and minority interests for each company. EBITDA may be reported or adjusted. Wendy’s Q2 2026 release labels its $124.1 million figure as adjusted EBITDA, a non-GAAP measure. It should not be placed beside an unadjusted McDonald’s EBITDA figure without reconciling the adjustments.
Price-to-sales and dividend yield
Price-to-sales is market capitalization ÷ consolidated revenue. It is especially weak as a stand-alone comparison here because the companies recognize franchised-system economics differently. Dividend yield is annualized dividend per share ÷ share price; it says nothing about sustainability unless you also examine earnings, free cash flow, debt maturities and payout policy.

Why the restaurant models are not interchangeable
McDonald’s is a much larger, predominantly franchised system
McDonald’s 2025 Form 10-K reports $26.885 billion of consolidated revenue, $12.4 billion of operating income, diluted earnings per share of $11.95 and $139.4 billion of systemwide sales. At year-end it had 45,356 restaurants, approximately 95% of them franchised, and operated in more than 100 countries. Its reported 2025 consolidated operating margin was 46.1%.
Franchise-heavy systems generally collect royalties, fees and rent while franchisees record much of the restaurant-level sales and operating costs. McDonald’s says segment margins vary with restaurant ownership mix, so its consolidated margin cannot be compared mechanically with a company that has a different proportion of company-operated restaurants.

Wendy’s 2025 Form 10-K reports $2.177 billion of total revenue and 7,397 restaurants at December 28, 2025. The system included 434 company-operated and 6,963 franchised restaurants.
Wendy’s consolidated revenue combines company-operated restaurant sales, franchise royalties and fees, franchise rental income and advertising-fund revenue. Advertising-fund revenue is matched by advertising-fund expense, so the gross advertising figure is not equivalent to ordinary sales retained by the company.
Systemwide sales are useful context, not a substitute for revenue
Systemwide sales represent sales across company-operated and franchised restaurants. They help show the economic scale of a brand, but they are not the numerator for a standard consolidated P/S ratio. Substituting McDonald’s $139.4 billion systemwide sales or a Wendy’s systemwide figure for consolidated revenue would mix different accounting concepts.

What the latest dated operating figures show
The periods below are not a same-quarter comparison. Wendy’s figures come from its release for the quarter ended June 28, 2026, issued August 7, 2026. McDonald’s figures come from its 2025 Form 10-K. They establish business conditions, not a current stock ranking.
| Measure | Wendy’s | McDonald’s |
|---|---|---|
| Reporting period | Q2 2026, quarter ended June 28, 2026 | Fiscal year 2025 |
| Consolidated revenue | $570.6 million | $26.885 billion |
| Operating profit/income | $79.3 million operating profit | $12.4 billion operating income |
| Net income or diluted EPS | $32.6 million net income | $11.95 diluted EPS |
| EBITDA measure | $124.1 million adjusted EBITDA, non-GAAP | Comparable EBITDA definition not established by the cited filing figures |
| Comparable or systemwide sales trend | U.S. same-restaurant sales down 7.0%; global systemwide sales down 6.5% | Annual systemwide sales of $139.4 billion; a directly matching same-period percentage is not stated here |
| Restaurants | 7,397 at year-end 2025; 434 operated and 6,963 franchised | 45,356 at year-end 2025; approximately 95% franchised |
| Dividend information | Annualized rate reduced to $0.28 per share in the Q2 2026 release | Comparable dividend figure is not established by the cited figures |
Wendy’s also withdrew its 2026 outlook in that release. Chief executive Bob Wright described the situation this way: “Our traffic, our value proposition and franchisee economics are not meeting our expectations.” That is management’s assessment of current operating performance, not proof that the shares are overvalued or undervalued.
How to build a matched-date valuation comparison
Use one market close for both WEN and MCD. If you choose October 13, 2026, record every input from that date or clearly label a later filing used to update the balance sheet.
- Record closing prices. Use the same exchange close and currency. Note whether either price reflects a split, special distribution or other corporate action.
- Determine diluted shares. Use the latest available diluted share count or a clearly documented current share count, and keep the methodology consistent. Market capitalization is
price × diluted shares. - Assemble enterprise-value items. Collect cash and cash equivalents, short- and long-term debt, finance leases, operating-lease liabilities when your methodology includes them, preferred interests and minority interests. Document what you include and exclude for both companies.
- Choose trailing or forward earnings. For trailing P/E, use the same completed fiscal period or a consistent last-twelve-month period. For forward P/E, identify the forecast source, date and fiscal year. Do not treat Wendy’s withdrawn 2026 outlook as an available management forecast.
- Choose a consistent EBITDA definition. Reconcile stock compensation, restructuring, impairment, refranchising, acquisition and other adjustments. Wendy’s adjusted EBITDA cannot be compared directly with a differently adjusted McDonald’s measure.
- Calculate the multiples. Show the numerator, denominator and units so a reader can reproduce P/E, EV/EBITDA, P/S and, if useful, free-cash-flow yield.
- Run a reasonableness check. Compare the resulting multiples with revenue growth, same-store sales, restaurant openings and closures, operating margin, capital expenditure, net debt, interest expense and dividend coverage. A spreadsheet error can look like an investment insight.
Minimum worksheet
| Input | Why it matters | Required treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Share price and date | Sets the market value being measured | Same close date and currency for both stocks |
| Diluted shares | Converts price into equity value | Use a consistent share-count basis |
| Cash | Reduces enterprise value | Use the balance-sheet date closest to the valuation date and label any lag |
| Debt and leases | Increase claims senior to common equity | Apply the same lease policy to both companies |
| EPS | Denominator for P/E | Both GAAP or both consistently adjusted; both trailing or both forward |
| EBITDA | Denominator for EV/EBITDA | Reconcile material adjustments and period definitions |
How to interpret the multiples
If Wendy’s P/E is lower
A lower Wendy’s P/E could mean the market expects weaker traffic, lower franchisee economics, further margin pressure or more volatile earnings. The latest quarter’s sales declines, withdrawn outlook and dividend reduction are relevant to the durability of the denominator. It could also reflect a genuinely conservative price, but that conclusion requires forward earnings and balance-sheet analysis that the dated figures do not provide.
If McDonald’s P/E is higher
A premium can reflect scale, brand reach, a larger franchised base, steadier royalty income, stronger margins or confidence in international growth. It can also indicate that investors have already priced in those advantages. A premium multiple is not automatically justified, and a lower multiple is not automatically mispriced.

Why EV/EBITDA can change the ranking
P/E focuses on common shareholders’ earnings after interest and taxes. EV/EBITDA looks before those costs and adds debt and other claims to the numerator. A company with more leverage or lease obligations can appear inexpensive on P/E while looking less inexpensive on EV/EBITDA. Conversely, differences in adjustment policies can create a false ranking if one company removes more costs from EBITDA.
Why P/S needs extra caution
McDonald’s and Wendy’s recognize different mixes of restaurant sales, royalties, rent and advertising-fund activity. A low P/S may simply reflect a higher proportion of franchised revenue recognition rather than a cheaper claim on comparable economics. Use sales multiples only with an explanation of the revenue model and margin structure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Operating factors that should sit beside valuation
Same-store sales and traffic
Separate price, traffic and mix where the filings provide them. Sustained traffic losses can reduce franchisee profitability and royalties even when menu pricing lifts reported sales. Wendy’s management specifically identified traffic, value proposition and franchisee economics as concerns in its August 2026 release.
Restaurant growth and franchising
Count net openings, closures, remodels and refranchising. More restaurants can expand royalties, but rapid growth can require capital or strain franchisee finances. McDonald’s much larger franchised footprint changes the way growth converts into corporate revenue and margins; Wendy’s smaller mix includes a greater company-operated component.

Margins and capital intensity
Compare operating margin, restaurant-level margin where disclosed, maintenance capital expenditure and development spending. McDonald’s reported a 46.1% consolidated operating margin for 2025, while segment margins vary by ownership mix. Do not infer Wendy’s comparable margin from its Q2 operating-profit dollars alone without matching revenue and accounting definitions.

Debt, leases and interest
Review maturities, floating-rate exposure, lease commitments and interest expense. Lease-heavy restaurant businesses can carry substantial fixed obligations that are not obvious from debt alone. Use the same treatment in enterprise value and then test whether operating cash flow covers interest, leases, capital expenditure and dividends.
Free cash flow and payout policy
Free cash flow can reveal whether dividends are funded by recurring operations or by borrowing and asset sales. Wendy’s reduced its annualized dividend rate to $0.28 per share in Q2 2026. A higher yield after a share-price decline is not necessarily attractive if the payout was reduced because management expects weaker cash generation.
Risks specific to each stock
Wendy’s risks to monitor
- Recent U.S. same-restaurant and global systemwide-sales deterioration may pressure royalties and franchisee health.
- The withdrawn 2026 outlook increases uncertainty around near-term earnings estimates.
- The company-operated and franchised mix creates different exposure to labor, food and occupancy costs.
- Advertising-fund revenue should not be treated as ordinary retained sales.
- A reduced dividend changes the income case and may signal a more conservative cash-allocation posture.
McDonald’s risks to monitor
- Results are materially international, so currency, local inflation, regulation and geopolitical conditions matter.
- Its scale can make percentage growth harder even when absolute sales and cash flow are large.
- Franchisee economics, rent structures and development requirements affect future openings and royalties.
- High margins can create elevated expectations; a premium multiple leaves less room for execution misses.
- McDonald’s notes that restaurant-industry peer indices are not necessarily meaningful comparisons because geographic footprint and company size differ.
A practical decision framework
| What the matched-date data shows | What it may imply | What to verify before drawing a conclusion |
|---|---|---|
| Lower P/E and lower EV/EBITDA for Wendy’s | Potential discount, or compensation for weaker growth and higher risk | Forward earnings revisions, traffic, debt, leases and cash-flow coverage |
| McDonald’s trades at a premium on both measures | Investors may be paying for scale, franchise mix and perceived durability | Whether growth and margins justify the premium and whether expectations are already high |
| Low P/S for one company | Possibly an accounting-mix effect | Royalty, rent, company-operated and advertising-fund revenue composition |
| High dividend yield | Could reflect income value or a falling share price | Payout ratio, free cash flow, debt covenants and management’s stated policy |
| Different EV/EBITDA results from P/E | Leverage, leases, taxes or adjustment policies are influencing the ranking | Reconcile every numerator and denominator item |
What a current comparison still needs
The cited filings establish dated operating facts but do not provide a consistent October 13, 2026 valuation set for both companies. Before publishing or acting on a comparison, refresh:

Conclusion: how to answer “which stock is cheaper”
The correct answer is conditional, not a ticker pick. Wendy’s and McDonald’s have different scale, franchise mixes, revenue recognition, operating exposure and current business momentum. A lower matched-date multiple for Wendy’s would need to compensate investors for the risks visible in its latest operating update; a McDonald’s premium would need to be supported by the durability of its larger franchised system and cash generation. Until common-date prices, capital structures and comparable trailing or forward measures are assembled, neither stock can be called cheaper or undervalued on the evidence above.
