1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor a U.S. investor, the direct way to buy stocks without borrowing from a broker is to open a cash brokerage account, deposit enough available money to pay for each order in full, and leave margin borrowing turned off. A cash account does not lend you money for purchases. You can buy individual shares, stock mutual funds, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), or—when a company offers one—a direct stock-purchase or dividend-reinvestment plan.
This avoids margin interest, margin calls, and the possibility that a broker sells your holdings without consulting you. It does not make stocks safe or guarantee a return: the investments can still lose value, and cash-account settlement rules still apply.

What “without borrowing” means
The relevant distinction is between borrowing from the brokerage firm and using money that is yours. In a cash account, you must pay the full purchase price of a security. The broker does not extend credit against your portfolio for that trade.

A cash account also is not a promise that your principal is protected. Stock prices can fall, a fund can underperform its benchmark, and a company can fail. The account type removes one source of risk—broker borrowing—but not market, business, interest-rate, liquidity, or fund risks.
Confirm that the account is a cash account
Account applications do not always make the safest choice for a no-borrowing investor obvious. The SEC’s Investor.gov guidance warns that some applications make a margin account the default. Read the account-type selection rather than accepting a preselected option.
- Select “cash account.” Use the application’s cash-account option, not a margin or “cash and margin” choice, if your goal is to prohibit broker lending.
- Check the final disclosures. Look for wording that says the firm may lend you money, charge margin interest, or use securities as collateral. Do not sign a margin agreement simply because it appears alongside the standard account forms.
- Verify after opening. The account profile, statements, or trading screen should identify the account as cash. Ask the firm to remove margin authority if the account was opened incorrectly; do not assume that never borrowing automatically disables the feature.
- Read the fee schedule and terms. Account charges can include commissions, maintenance or inactivity fees, transfer fees, and product-level expenses. The actual schedule depends on the provider and the investment you choose.
Keep a copy of the application and agreements. If the account label or permissions are unclear, obtain written confirmation from the firm before placing an order.

| Route | What you buy | Important comparisons |
|---|---|---|
| Individual stocks | Shares representing ownership in a particular company | Company-specific risk, concentration, research demands, trading costs, and whether you can tolerate a large position in one issuer |
| Stock mutual funds or ETFs | Shares of a pooled portfolio that invests primarily in stocks | Holdings, diversification, investment objective, index construction (if applicable), expense and transaction costs, tracking error, and fit with your time horizon |
| Direct stock-purchase plans | Stock bought through a participating company’s plan | Eligibility, available companies, plan fees, purchase rules, and whether the plan offers the investments you actually want |
| Dividend-reinvestment plans | Dividends used to buy additional shares under a plan’s terms | Whether reinvestment is available, any fees, purchase timing, tax reporting, and the concentration created by repeatedly adding to one company |
Availability and terms vary by provider and plan. Fractional shares, minimum-investment features, and fee-free transactions are not universal, so verify the current terms before relying on them.
Buying individual stocks in a cash account
An individual share gives you an ownership interest in one company. Your result therefore depends heavily on that company’s finances, competitive position, management, industry, and valuation. Holding several companies can reduce the effect of one failure, but a portfolio of only a few names remains concentrated compared with a broad fund.
When this route may fit
- You are prepared to read company filings and follow material changes rather than buying on a headline alone.
- You understand that a high-conviction position can produce a larger loss than a diversified portfolio.
- You can leave the money invested for a period that matches the stock’s risk and your goal.
Questions to answer before an order
- What does the company sell, and what could permanently impair its earnings or cash flow?
- How much of your total portfolio would this one position represent after the purchase?
- Are you buying because of a defined thesis, or because the price recently moved?
- What fees, bid-ask spreads, and tax consequences apply to the trade in your account?
A cash account prevents the broker from financing the purchase, but it does not prevent you from losing the entire amount invested in a company. Diversification remains a separate decision.
Using stock mutual funds and ETFs
A stock mutual fund or ETF pools investors’ money and buys a portfolio of stocks. One purchase can therefore provide exposure to many issuers, although the actual diversification depends on the fund’s holdings and concentration.

Index funds are indirect exposure to a basket
An index fund seeks to track a specified index; you cannot buy the index itself. The fund buys some or all of the securities represented by that index according to its methodology. Two funds that use similar-sounding index labels can still differ in eligible companies, weighting, rebalancing, and concentration.
Review the fund’s prospectus and shareholder report for its objective, principal strategies, holdings, costs, and risks. Compare the fund’s results with its index while allowing for expenses, trading costs, portfolio sampling, and other tracking error. A fund can lag its index and still operate as designed.
Costs and risks to compare
- Expense ratio and other fund expenses: These reduce the return retained by shareholders.
- Trading costs: An ETF may have a bid-ask spread or brokerage transaction charge; a mutual fund may have purchase, redemption, account, or other charges under its terms.
- Portfolio concentration: A fund that appears broad can still be heavily weighted toward a few companies, sectors, or countries.
- Investment objective: A fund designed for a narrow industry or style has a different risk profile from a broad-market fund.
- Tracking error: The fund may not match its index exactly.
Diversification lowers the impact of one holding’s failure; it does not remove stock-market risk. Every security held by the fund can decline, and the fund’s structure does not guarantee a profit.

Check the plan document for enrollment eligibility, minimum and recurring purchase amounts, fees, purchase dates, sale procedures, transfer restrictions, and tax reporting. A plan focused on one issuer also creates concentration risk. If you want a diversified portfolio or access to funds, a direct company plan may not meet that need.
Step-by-step: invest without enabling margin
- Define the purpose and time horizon. Identify when you may need the money and how much loss you could tolerate without abandoning the plan. A short horizon leaves less time to recover from a market decline.
- Deal with urgent financial priorities. Investor.gov’s general guidance says no investment guarantees a return that outweighs high-interest credit-card debt. Consider paying such debt and maintaining an appropriate emergency reserve before committing money to stocks.
- Open the correct account. Choose a cash account, inspect every margin-related agreement, and confirm the account type in the firm’s records.
- Fund the account with settled, available cash. Transfer money and wait until the broker shows it as available for the intended order. Do not assume that a recent deposit or sale proceeds can be reused immediately.
- Choose the security. For a stock, assess company-specific risk and position size. For a fund, read the prospectus, shareholder report, holdings, objective, index methodology (if any), expenses, and risks.
- Place an order within the cash balance. The order value plus any applicable charges must be covered by available funds. If the platform offers margin as an optional buying-power source, do not select it.
- Keep records and review periodically. Save confirmations, statements, cost information, and plan documents. Revisit whether the investment still fits your goal rather than reacting to every price change.
Cash-account settlement rules you cannot ignore
“No margin” does not mean “trade with unsettled money.” After you sell a security, the proceeds may not be settled immediately. Follow the broker’s stated settlement date and payment instructions before using those proceeds for another purchase.
Two behaviors create particular problems:
- Using sale proceeds before settlement: Buying with money that has not settled can violate cash-account payment rules.
- Freeriding: Selling a newly purchased security before paying for it with the required funds can be treated as freeriding. A consequence can be a 90-day account freeze, during which purchases may have to be fully paid for in advance.
Settlement treatment can depend on the security and the firm’s procedures. When in doubt, ask the broker whether funds are settled and whether an order would create a violation. A cash-account restriction is different from a margin call: it arises from payment timing, not from a loan secured by your holdings.

Why margin is different—and why avoiding it matters
In a margin account, the broker lends against securities in the account and charges interest. If the account value falls, the firm can require additional collateral or sell holdings. The SEC’s margin guidance says losses can exceed the amount initially invested, and a broker may sell securities without consulting the investor.

The SEC uses hypothetical arithmetic to show the leverage effect: an investor might put up $50 and see a position rise to $75, or fall to $15. Those are illustrations, not typical returns, forecasts, or reported market statistics. The practical difference is that borrowed money magnifies both gains and losses while adding interest and the possibility of forced sales.
| Feature | Cash account | Margin account |
|---|---|---|
| How a purchase is funded | Investor pays the full amount | Investor may combine cash with a broker loan |
| Interest on purchase financing | No broker-loan interest because there is no purchase loan | Interest generally applies to borrowed funds |
| Collateral and calls | No margin collateral requirement or margin call | Additional collateral can be required when values fall |
| Forced sale risk from lending | Not caused by a margin loan, although ordinary account rules still apply | Broker may sell securities, potentially without prior consultation |
| Maximum loss from leverage | You can lose the money invested; market losses still apply | Losses can exceed the initial amount invested |
How to compare choices without assuming one is best
Use the same questions for every stock, fund, or plan:
- What do I actually own? Identify the company or the fund’s current holdings.
- How diversified is it? Look at the number of holdings and the weight of the largest positions, sectors, and regions.
- What is the objective? Distinguish broad-market exposure from a narrow industry, factor, income, or thematic strategy.
- What will it cost? Include account fees, commissions, spreads, fund expenses, plan charges, and transfer costs where applicable.
- What could make me sell at a bad time? Consider volatility, liquidity, concentration, and when the money will be needed.
- Can I tolerate the loss? Match the investment to your time horizon, financial situation, and ability to withstand declines.
There is no universally correct stock allocation or single best security established by these general principles. The appropriate choice depends on the investor’s circumstances and the specific product terms.
U.S. scope and when to verify local rules
The cash-account definitions, settlement warnings, and freeriding discussion here are based on U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission investor materials, including Investor.gov guidance dated September 12, 2017 and updated August 7, 2026 for cash accounts; June 10, 2021 for margin accounts; and the SEC bulletin on opening a brokerage account. Other countries may use different account labels, settlement procedures, tax rules, and investor protections. If you invest outside the United States, confirm the local requirements with the relevant regulator and provider.
For a U.S. investor who wants to avoid broker borrowing, the operational rule is simple: select a cash account, keep enough settled cash to pay for each purchase, understand what you own and what it costs, and follow the firm’s settlement instructions. The remaining decisions—individual stocks, diversified stock funds, or an eligible direct plan—should reflect your goals, horizon, and ability to absorb losses.
