There is no universal winner. Walmart+ states a 10¢-per-gallon discount at participating Walmart, CITGO, Exxon, Mobil and Murphy stations, while Sam’s Club stations provide their separate member price. Gas-station programs use different rules: Exxon Mobil Rewards+ lists its own per-gallon savings by fuel grade, and Shell Fuel Rewards combines status discounts with rewards earned through participating partners. The cheapest choice is the program that produces the lowest final pump price at a station you can conveniently use, after accounting for eligibility, fuel grade, limits and any membership fee.
At participating Exxon and Mobil locations, you must choose between the Walmart+ discount and Exxon Mobil Rewards+; the two benefits cannot be combined. Treat published savings figures as program terms, not as proof that one company is cheaper in your neighborhood.

What each fuel program actually provides
Walmart+ Gas Savings
Walmart’s current help information says Walmart+ members can save 10¢ per gallon at participating Walmart, CITGO, Exxon, Mobil and Murphy stations. The benefit is delivered through the Walmart app, so the station must participate and the transaction must be processed in the qualifying way. At Sam’s Club fuel stations, Walmart+ members receive the Sam’s Club member fuel price instead of the 10¢ Walmart+ discount. Those are different benefits: do not subtract another 10¢ from a Sam’s Club price unless the current terms specifically say so.

How broad is the Walmart+ network?
In a 2026 corporate announcement, Walmart said adding CITGO expanded its participating network from 13,000 to more than 17,000 U.S. stations, an increase of approximately 30 percent. That is a company-reported location count, not a guarantee that a station near you participates or that every listed location offers the same transaction experience. Walmart’s membership terms describe the discount as applying at Walmart fueling stations and selected third-party providers and disclaim responsibility for products or services supplied by those third parties.
Exxon Mobil Rewards+
ExxonMobil states that Walmart+ members using the Walmart app can save 10¢ per gallon at nearly 12,000 participating Exxon and Mobil stations. The same offer says the Walmart+ savings cannot be combined with Exxon Mobil Rewards+ and that a Walmart+ transaction does not earn Rewards+ points for future savings.
ExxonMobil’s Rewards+ page separately advertises ongoing point-of-sale savings of 10¢ per gallon on regular, mid-grade and diesel fuel, and 12¢ per gallon on Supreme+ premium fuel. Those amounts are the figures stated on the accessed program page; offers and terms can change. A premium-fuel customer therefore cannot assume that Walmart+ is automatically better simply because both programs mention 10¢. The relevant comparison is the eligible discount for the grade actually purchased.

Shell Fuel Rewards
Shell describes a different model. Members with Platinum Status save at least 10¢ per gallon, and additional savings may be unlocked through participating retailers, restaurants, grocers and in-store activity. Shell also describes linking participating grocery-loyalty programs and redeeming earned fuel points for cents-per-gallon savings at Shell stations.
Shell’s potential value depends on behavior and eligibility rather than a single automatic discount. The grocery program you use, the status you have earned and the redemption rules in effect determine what you can actually take off the pump price. Compare the reward you can reliably qualify for, not a maximum promotion you are unlikely to earn.

The comparison that matters: final price at your pump
A headline discount is only one input. Use this calculation for every realistic station and fuel grade:
Net price per gallon = posted local pump price − discount or reward actually eligible for that purchase.
For a reward program, use the amount you can redeem on that visit. If a Shell offer requires Platinum Status or a linked grocery account, do not treat the base price as if the larger reward were guaranteed. If a location does not participate, its eligible discount is zero for your comparison.
A station with a larger advertised discount can still produce a higher net price when its posted price starts higher. Conversely, a smaller discount can win at a station with a lower posted price. The official program sources establish benefit rules, but they do not establish local pump-price rankings, so no national claim that one program always costs less is supported.
A repeatable way to compare your options
- List stations you already pass. Write down the Walmart, CITGO, Exxon, Mobil, Murphy, Sam’s Club and Shell locations that fit your normal routes. Include only stations that are practical; a long detour can consume the value of a few cents per gallon through extra mileage and time.
- Confirm participation. Check the Walmart app for Walmart+ Gas Savings eligibility and the current station list. Check the applicable Exxon Mobil or Shell account and offer terms for loyalty rewards. A brand name alone does not prove that a particular location accepts the benefit.
- Record the posted price for the same grade. Compare regular with regular, mid-grade with mid-grade, diesel with diesel and premium with premium. Exxon Mobil’s stated Rewards+ amounts differ by grade, and a reward available on one grade may not apply to another.
- Apply only the benefit you can use. Subtract Walmart+’s 10¢ where the transaction qualifies, the Sam’s Club member price where you are buying at Sam’s Club, the applicable Exxon Mobil Rewards+ amount, or the Shell reward you have actually earned. At Exxon and Mobil, choose between Walmart+ and Rewards+ rather than adding both.
- Check limits and account requirements. For CITGO, keep the 30-gallon-per-transaction and four-transactions-per-week limits in mind. Confirm that the required app, loyalty account, linked grocery account or status is active before fueling.
- Include membership cost only when it is incremental. If you would buy Walmart+ anyway for its other benefits, evaluate the fuel savings as an added benefit. If fuel is the reason for a new subscription, include the current annual or monthly fee shown at sign-up. The available program information does not establish a current Walmart+ price, so do not use an old price in a break-even calculation.
- Multiply the real per-gallon difference by your qualifying gallons. Use gallons that can actually be purchased under the program’s rules, not an unlimited theoretical volume.

Example: a lower posted price beats a larger-looking discount
Suppose Station A posts regular gasoline at $3.49 and accepts a 10¢ Walmart+ discount. Its net price is $3.39. Station B posts regular gasoline at $3.35 and provides a 5¢ loyalty reward. Its net price is $3.30. The smaller reward at Station B saves 9¢ more per gallon because the starting price is 14¢ lower.

Suppose an Exxon station posts Supreme+ premium at $4.09. The 12¢ Rewards+ amount stated on ExxonMobil’s program page would produce $3.97 before any other applicable terms. A 10¢ Walmart+ discount would produce $3.99, and the Walmart+ transaction would not also earn Rewards+ points. The two-cent difference is specific to this hypothetical price and the stated amounts; check the live offer before deciding.
Example: a membership fee changes the annual answer
If a hypothetical new membership cost $100 for a year and produced an additional 10¢ per gallon compared with the best no-fee alternative, the simple break-even volume would be 1,000 qualifying gallons ($100 ÷ $0.10). Real break-even volume can be higher if some fills occur at nonparticipating stations, if a price difference offsets the discount, or if transaction limits prevent all gallons from qualifying. Use the current fee and your own eligible gallons rather than this illustration.
How to think about Walmart’s reported $109 average
Walmart’s 2026 announcement reported $109 in average annual savings for members who had at least 12 months of membership and used Gas Savings at least once a week during March 2025 through March 2026. This is a defined frequent-user group and a specific period. It is not a forecast for every Walmart+ member, and it does not compare those members’ results with Exxon Mobil Rewards+, Shell Fuel Rewards or another independent control group.
Your result can be lower if you drive infrequently, buy fewer gallons, use stations outside the participating network, purchase fuel grades with different terms, or face a higher local posted price. It can be higher or lower depending on routes and actual prices. The figure is Walmart’s own reported statistic, not an independently tested comparison.

Where stacking works—and where it does not
Exxon and Mobil: select one benefit
At participating Exxon and Mobil stations, the Walmart+ offer cannot be combined with Exxon Mobil Rewards+. You should compare the two eligible outcomes at that station and select the better one for the fuel grade and transaction. Do not count Rewards+ points as an additional saving on a Walmart+ fill when the offer says those points are not earned.
CITGO: a separate loyalty possibility
Walmart said in its 2026 announcement that members can redeem Walmart Gas Savings at participating CITGO locations and stack additional savings when they join the Club CITGO loyalty program. Because that statement is tied to an announcement and program terms can change, verify the current Club CITGO rules, eligibility and whether the specific station supports the combination before relying on it.
Shell: earned rewards are conditional
Shell’s grocery-linked and partner-based rewards are not an automatic second discount for every driver. Confirm the participating grocery program, the account-linking step, the points balance, expiration or redemption conditions and the cents-per-gallon amount available on the purchase. Treat an unearned or unavailable reward as zero in your comparison.

Exxon Mobil’s published Rewards+ amounts distinguish regular, mid-grade, diesel and Supreme+ premium. If you normally buy premium, compare the 12¢ stated premium amount with Walmart+’s 10¢ rather than comparing both programs only on regular gasoline. A diesel driver should verify that the station and selected program apply the advertised diesel amount.
Volume limits matter most for large tanks, multiple vehicles and repeated commercial-style fills. The CITGO limits are explicit, while other station-specific restrictions may appear in current account terms. Keep receipts or app records when testing a program so you can identify whether the discount applied and how many qualifying transactions remain.

Convenience is a financial variable. A station on your commute has a different value from one requiring a detour, an app failure, a separate login or a queue at a busier location. Estimate the extra miles and time for any alternative route, then compare that cost with the calculated fuel-price difference.
Choosing by driver profile
You already pay for Walmart+
Start with participating stations on your normal routes. Because the membership fee is already committed for other reasons, every qualifying 10¢ discount can be evaluated as incremental value. Still compare the final posted price and remember that Sam’s Club uses its member price rather than the Walmart+ discount.
You are considering Walmart+ mainly for fuel
Use a conservative annual gallon estimate and include only stations you can realistically use. Divide the current membership fee by the expected per-gallon advantage over your best alternative. If the result requires more gallons than you normally purchase, the fuel benefit alone does not break even. Recalculate if the fee, participating network or local prices change.

Compare grade-specific terms. Exxon Mobil’s stated Rewards+ schedule gives premium a different amount from regular, mid-grade and diesel. Check whether the Walmart+ discount applies to the exact grade and whether Shell rewards can be redeemed on it at your chosen station.
You already earn grocery or partner rewards
Shell Fuel Rewards may be valuable when your normal shopping already generates eligible points or status. Count only rewards you would earn without changing your spending, and verify that the grocery loyalty program is one Shell currently accepts. Do not buy unnecessary goods solely to chase a fuel discount unless the total household economics make sense.
You want the fewest rules
A straightforward per-gallon discount may be easier to use than a status-and-points system, but only if the station is convenient and the app transaction works. Read the current terms for account activation, participating locations and limits before deciding that simplicity is worth a potentially lower reward.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Comparing advertised discounts instead of net prices: record the pump price and subtract only the eligible amount.
- Assuming every station participates: verify the exact location in the relevant app or account before driving there.
- Stacking incompatible Exxon and Mobil offers: choose Walmart+ or Rewards+; do not add the two discounts or assume points will accrue.
- Ignoring fuel grade: use the amount for the grade you purchase, especially where premium has a separate published rate.
- Treating $109 as a guarantee: remember it describes frequent Walmart users with at least 12 months of membership during a specified March 2025–March 2026 period.
- Forgetting CITGO limits: stay within 30 gallons per transaction and four transactions per week if you rely on Walmart+ there.
- Counting a reward you cannot redeem: confirm status, linked accounts, points and redemption terms immediately before fueling.
- Using an outdated fee or offer: check the current membership price and live program terms; published amounts can change.
- Driving farther for a few cents: include the extra distance, time and fuel consumed in the decision.
A practical pre-fill checklist
- Open the applicable app or loyalty account and confirm that the station participates.
- Check the posted price and fuel grade at that location.
- Verify the discount or reward amount available for this transaction.
- At Exxon or Mobil, decide whether Walmart+ or Rewards+ gives the lower eligible net price.
- Check account status, linked grocery benefits and any volume or frequency limit.
- Complete payment through the required app or loyalty method and confirm that the discount appeared on the receipt.
- Record the net price and qualifying gallons for a month, then compare your actual average with the alternatives on your regular routes.
Bottom line
Walmart+ is most compelling when you already have the membership, regularly pass participating stations and can use the 10¢ discount often enough to matter. Exxon Mobil Rewards+ can be stronger for a driver whose local Exxon or Mobil price is lower, who buys premium and can use the stated 12¢ amount, or who prefers its separate loyalty account. Shell Fuel Rewards can win when your existing grocery and partner activity reliably generates redeemable points or Platinum Status. None of those conditions establishes a universal winner: compare the final local price, eligible fuel grade, station access, transaction rules and incremental membership cost for the stations you actually use.
