VTI vs. VOO: Which Vanguard ETF Is Right for Your Portfolio?

By TheFinanceBase Team 12 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose VTI when you want one fund to cover nearly the entire investable U.S. stock market, including large-, mid-, small-, and micro-cap companies. Choose VOO when you deliberately want the S&P 500’s large-cap U.S. exposure. Vanguard’s current listing shows the same 0.03% expense ratio for both funds (listing accessed October 13, 2026), so the practical decision is market coverage and how the fund fits with your international-stock and bond allocations—not a listed-fee advantage.

Neither ETF is a complete portfolio by itself. Both hold U.S. stocks, which can lose value, and historical returns do not guarantee future results.

VTI and VOO answer different portfolio questions

VTI and VOO are both Vanguard index exchange-traded funds, but they track different portions of the U.S. equity market.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • VTI: Vanguard Morningstar Total Stock Market ETF. It seeks to track the Morningstar US Total Market Index, which Vanguard says represents approximately 100% of the investable U.S. stock market.
  • VOO: Vanguard S&P 500 ETF. It seeks to track the S&P 500 Index, a large-capitalization U.S. equity benchmark.

That makes the choice a portfolio-construction decision. VTI adds exposure to companies outside the large-cap segment. VOO focuses on the large companies represented in the S&P 500. A fund with more holdings is not automatically more diversified in portfolio impact, because the largest companies can account for much more weight than the smallest holdings.

For a U.S.-stock allocation, either approach can be reasonable. The right one depends on whether you want broad market-cap coverage or a large-cap benchmark, and on what other funds already provide in your portfolio.

What VTI owns that VOO does not target

Large-, mid-, small-, and micro-cap exposure

VTI’s benchmark is designed to represent the investable U.S. stock market across market-cap tiers. Along with the largest companies, that includes mid-cap, small-cap, and micro-cap companies. This gives VTI a single-fund way to include segments that a large-cap-only strategy leaves out.

VOO’s objective is narrower: the SEC summary prospectus says it seeks to track a benchmark measuring large-capitalization stock returns. The S&P 500 is widely recognized as a large-cap U.S. benchmark. Companies outside that segment are not part of VOO’s target index simply because they are publicly traded; they would need to qualify for the S&P 500.

Why the holding count can mislead

Vanguard reported 3,507 VTI stocks as of August 31, 2026, compared with 505 stocks on the VOO profile’s displayed reporting period. Those figures show the difference in breadth, but they do not mean VTI allocates the same amount to each company. Index funds are generally weighted according to their benchmark methodology, so the largest companies can dominate returns while thousands of smaller positions have modest individual weights.

Use the count as a scope indicator, not as a promise that every company contributes equally or that VTI will always behave dramatically differently from VOO. Because the largest U.S. companies are present in both indexes, their returns can create substantial overlap even though VTI reaches farther down the market-cap spectrum.

Overlap, concentration and what “diversified” means here

VTI and VOO are not opposites. VOO’s large companies are also included in VTI, so owning both does not create two independent U.S. markets. The second fund may mainly change the weighting of companies and market-cap segments you already own.

For example, adding VOO to VTI generally emphasizes the large-cap portion that is already a major part of a total-market index. Adding VTI to VOO generally introduces smaller companies, but it does not remove the large-cap exposure you already have. The result depends on the amount invested in each fund and the index weights at the time.

Security count is therefore a poor stand-in for portfolio diversification. VTI’s 3,507 reported stocks and VOO’s 505 reported stocks are useful facts about index breadth, but the economic exposure is driven by position weights. Review the portfolio’s largest holdings and intended market-cap mix rather than assuming that more line items automatically means less concentration.

How the two funds fit common portfolio designs

One-fund U.S. stock sleeve

If you want a single U.S. equity holding and do not want to decide how much to allocate to large-, mid-, and small-cap segments, VTI provides the broadest stated U.S. coverage of the two. It lets the index determine the relative exposure across those segments.

VOO can serve as a single U.S. stock holding when your plan intentionally uses the S&P 500 as its large-cap core. It does not claim to represent the entire U.S. market, so choosing it means accepting that your U.S. allocation is centered on large companies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pairing with separate small- or mid-cap funds

An investor who prefers VOO’s large-cap core can add separate mid-cap or small-cap funds to broaden U.S. exposure. That approach gives you control over how much exposure sits outside the S&P 500, but it also creates more moving parts and requires you to maintain target weights.

With VTI, adding another broad U.S. fund may duplicate holdings rather than add a missing market segment. A separate fund can still be intentional—for example, if you want to overweight small companies—but it is no longer a neutral total-market allocation.

Adding international stocks and bonds

Neither ETF supplies international stocks or bonds. A portfolio built around either fund may therefore need:

  • An international-stock allocation if your plan calls for companies outside the United States.
  • A bond or other fixed-income allocation if you need an asset class with a different risk and return pattern from stocks.
  • A rebalancing method that keeps the U.S., international, and bond percentages aligned with your chosen plan.

Whether you use VTI or VOO for the U.S. sleeve does not answer those separate allocation decisions. A broad U.S. fund is still only U.S. equity exposure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which fund is simpler to maintain?

VTI can be simpler when the objective is broad U.S. exposure because one holding already spans the market-cap groups represented by its benchmark. You do not need a separate U.S. small-cap or mid-cap fund merely to reach those segments.

VOO can be simpler when the desired policy is specifically an S&P 500 large-cap allocation. Its narrower mandate makes the intended exposure easy to describe, but investors who also want smaller U.S. companies must decide whether to add another fund and how to rebalance the combination.

Neither choice eliminates maintenance. Index composition changes, contributions alter portfolio percentages, and market movements can move an allocation away from its target. A written rule for contributions or rebalancing is more important than trying to predict which market-cap group will lead next.

Costs: the listed fee is tied, but trading costs still matter

Expense ratio

Vanguard’s ETF listing accessed October 13, 2026 displayed a 0.03% expense ratio for both VTI and VOO. The expense ratio is an ongoing fund expense reflected in the fund’s operating results rather than a separate bill you generally pay manually. Vanguard can change expenses, so check the current listing or prospectus before placing an order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Brokerage and transaction costs

Vanguard says ETF shares must be bought and sold through Vanguard Brokerage Services or another broker. Depending on the broker and transaction, costs can include commissions, bid-ask spreads, or other account-level charges. A zero-commission trade does not eliminate the spread or guarantee that every order executes at the price you expect.

For a long-term investor making periodic purchases, the fund’s listed expense ratio may be only one part of the cost picture. Review your broker’s current commission schedule, order types, account fees, and any requirements for recurring purchases. Those terms are separate from the ETF’s operating expense.

How to choose between VTI and VOO

Use the following sequence to make the choice without treating past performance as a forecast.

  1. Define the job of the position. Decide whether the holding is meant to represent your entire U.S. stock allocation or only a large-cap core. A total-market objective points toward VTI; an S&P 500 objective points toward VOO.
  2. List your existing U.S. holdings. Include workplace-plan funds, taxable-account ETFs, and mutual funds. If you already own a total-market fund, adding VOO can increase large-cap concentration. If you already own VOO, VTI can broaden exposure, but the overlap means the change may be smaller than the ticker labels suggest.
  3. Check for missing market-cap segments. If your current plan has no mid-, small-, or micro-cap exposure, VTI supplies those segments within its tracked market. If you choose VOO, determine whether another holding is intended to cover them.
  4. Set international and bond targets separately. Neither fund fills those roles. Write down the percentage you want in international stocks and bonds before deciding how much remains for U.S. equities.
  5. Compare current costs at the time of purchase. Confirm each fund’s latest expense ratio and your broker’s trading terms. The figures in the table are dated and should not be assumed permanent.
  6. Choose a rebalancing rule. Decide whether you will rebalance on a schedule, when allocations cross a threshold, or by directing new contributions. A rule helps prevent a fund that has recently risen from silently becoming a larger share of the portfolio than intended.
  7. Place and document the order. Verify the ticker, account, dollar amount or share quantity, order type, and estimated execution price. Record why you selected the fund so a later market move does not automatically change the plan.

How to compare performance without drawing the wrong conclusion

Vanguard’s listing contains dated performance data, but displayed dates and return windows can vary. A valid comparison requires the same measurement date, the same period, and the same total-return basis for both funds. Total return should account for distributions as well as price changes; comparing one fund’s price return with the other’s total return would produce a misleading result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Even a carefully matched historical period is descriptive, not predictive. VTI’s broader market-cap exposure can help or hurt relative to VOO depending on how smaller companies perform compared with large companies during that period. A past winner does not establish which fund will win next.

If you review performance, save the date and methodology with the figures. Do not combine a current VTI return with an older VOO return, a different time span, or a different share-class calculation.

Questions to ask before buying

  • Am I choosing a benchmark or chasing a recent result? Start with the exposure you want, not whichever ticker recently had the higher return.
  • Do I already own the same large companies elsewhere? Workplace plans and other accounts can make a VOO purchase more concentrated than it appears from one account alone.
  • Where will smaller companies come from? VTI includes them through its total-market benchmark; VOO requires another intentional source if they are part of your plan.
  • What will cover non-U.S. stocks and bonds? Neither ETF supplies either asset class.
  • Can I follow the plan during a downturn? Both funds are stock funds and can lose value. The better choice is one whose scope you can hold through market declines.
  • Are the quoted costs current? Recheck the listing, prospectus and broker terms because expense ratios and trading conditions can change.

Risks and practical limitations

Both are all-stock U.S. funds

VTI and VOO can fall when U.S. stock prices decline. They do not provide the stabilizing role some investors seek from high-quality bonds, and they do not diversify a portfolio into non-U.S. markets.

Broader does not mean safer in every period

VTI’s inclusion of smaller companies changes its exposure; it does not remove equity risk. Smaller companies can experience different volatility, liquidity, and business risks from the largest corporations. VOO’s large-cap focus can also be volatile and can become concentrated in the companies with the greatest index weights.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Index and implementation risks

Each ETF follows its index methodology, and the portfolio can change as companies enter, leave, or change size in the eligible market. Trading prices can differ slightly from the value of the underlying holdings during the day. Your realized result also depends on the price at which your order executes, taxes, and brokerage costs.

Vanguard states: “All investing is subject to risk, including the possible loss of the money you invest.” Read the fund documents and consider your time horizon and ability to tolerate losses before investing. This comparison is general information, not individualized financial advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is VTI or VOO more diversified?

VTI has broader stated coverage because its benchmark includes large-, mid-, small-, and micro-cap U.S. companies. VOO focuses on the S&P 500. However, diversification by security count is not the same as diversification by portfolio weight; large companies can dominate both funds.

Can I own both VTI and VOO?

Yes, but the funds overlap substantially because VOO’s large companies are also included in VTI. Owning both generally changes your weighting between large-cap and smaller U.S. companies rather than adding two unrelated markets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do VTI and VOO include international stocks or bonds?

No. Both are U.S. equity ETFs. Add separate international-stock and bond holdings if those asset classes are part of your allocation plan.

Which fund has the lower expense ratio?

Neither had a lower listed expense ratio in Vanguard’s listing accessed October 13, 2026: both were shown at 0.03%. Check the latest listing or prospectus because expenses can change.

How many stocks do the funds hold?

Vanguard reported 3,507 VTI stocks as of August 31, 2026. Its VOO profile showed 505 stocks for the displayed reporting period. Counts change and do not imply equal weighting.

Should I choose based on whichever performed better recently?

No. Compare identical periods using the same dated total-return methodology, then treat the result as historical information rather than a forecast. Relative performance can change as large-, mid-, and small-cap stocks lead or lag one another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where are VTI and VOO traded?

Vanguard says ETF shares are bought and sold through Vanguard Brokerage Services or another broker. The broker may charge commissions, spreads or other account-level costs.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: VTI is the broader U.S. market choice, covering approximately the investable U.S. equity market across market-cap sizes. VOO is the focused S&P 500 large-cap choice. Vanguard listed a 0.03% expense ratio for each on October 13, 2026, so decide based on intended exposure, overlap, international and bond allocations, and your ability to follow the plan—not on a presumed fee or performance advantage.
