VMBS is a narrower allocation to agency MBS pass-through securities issued by Ginnie Mae, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Neither fund is universally better; the right choice depends on the job you want the bond allocation to perform.

What each ETF owns
VMBS: a focused agency-MBS allocation
VMBS seeks to track an intermediate-term U.S. mortgage-backed securities index. Its stated exposure is to agency MBS pass-through securities issued by Ginnie Mae (GNMA), Fannie Mae (FNMA) and Freddie Mac (FHLMC). In a pass-through structure, mortgage payments from a pool of borrowers are passed through to investors after servicing and other fees. The fund therefore gives you a targeted way to emphasize the agency-MBS segment rather than buying the entire taxable bond market.
That focus can be useful when your asset-allocation plan already has broad exposure elsewhere and you want a specific mortgage allocation. It also means VMBS will not automatically provide the corporate-bond, Treasury, ABS or CMBS exposure found in a broad bond-market fund.

BND: a broad, market-weighted bond core
BND seeks to track a broad, market-weighted bond index. The index includes Treasuries, government-related and corporate bonds, fixed-rate agency MBS, ABS and CMBS. The result is a single ETF spanning substantially more bond sectors and individual securities than VMBS.
Because agency MBS are already part of BND’s index, buying BND gives you some MBS exposure without adding a separate mortgage fund. The exact sector weights move as the bond market changes; the key distinction is that BND is designed as broad-market exposure, while VMBS is designed as a dedicated agency-MBS sleeve.
Does BND already include mortgage-backed securities?
Yes. BND’s stated index includes fixed-rate agency MBS in addition to Treasuries, government-related bonds, corporate bonds, ABS and CMBS. Therefore, adding VMBS to an existing BND position increases your emphasis on agency MBS; it does not add a bond sector that BND entirely lacks.

This overlap matters when you set a target allocation. For example, a portfolio with 70% BND and 30% VMBS is not 100% broad bonds plus a completely separate asset class. Part of the VMBS position overlaps with the MBS exposure already embedded in BND. The more VMBS you add, the more your overall fixed-income allocation departs from a neutral broad-market mix and tilts toward agency mortgages.

Portfolio role: core holding or targeted sleeve?
When BND is the more natural choice
- You want one ETF to serve as the main diversified U.S. bond allocation.
- You do not have a specific reason to overweight agency MBS.
- You want exposure spread across government, corporate, mortgage, ABS and CMBS sectors rather than concentrated in one segment.
- You are simplifying a portfolio and prefer fewer moving parts.
BND’s 11,451 holdings, reported as of July 31, 2026, illustrate the breadth of the portfolio. Breadth does not guarantee higher returns or lower volatility, but it reduces reliance on the behavior of any one bond sector.
When VMBS can make sense
- You intentionally want agency MBS to represent a larger share of your bond allocation.
- You already hold Treasuries, corporate bonds or other broad funds and need a dedicated mortgage sleeve.
- You are constructing a multi-fund allocation in which each ETF has a defined sector assignment.
- You understand that VMBS will overlap with any BND position that already contains agency MBS.
VMBS’s 1,467 holdings, as of July 31, 2026, are spread across the agency-MBS segment, but the fund remains narrower by mandate than BND.
Interest-rate risk and mortgage prepayments
What the duration figures tell you
Vanguard’s pages display average duration of 5.6 years for VMBS and 5.7 years for BND. Duration is a summary estimate of how sensitive a bond portfolio is to changes in interest rates. The near match means the two displayed portfolios have broadly similar rate-sensitivity estimates at those measurement points.

Duration is not a promise that both ETFs will move by the same amount. It is an estimate, not a fixed maturity, and it does not capture every source of price and income variation. The VMBS duration figure is current page data without a stated as-of date in the supplied excerpt; BND’s 5.7-year figure is dated July 31, 2026. Compare updated pages before making a trade.

Why MBS can behave differently from ordinary bonds
Agency MBS are backed by pools of home mortgages. Borrowers can refinance, sell their homes or otherwise repay principal earlier than expected. When rates fall, refinancing activity can accelerate, returning principal when reinvestment opportunities are less attractive. When rates rise, prepayments can slow, extending the effective life of the securities. This “prepayment” or “extension” behavior is why two funds with similar displayed durations can still experience different cash-flow patterns and price responses.
The official product descriptions establish VMBS’s agency-MBS focus and BND’s multi-sector exposure, but they do not quantify a comparative prepayment-risk advantage. Do not infer from 5.6 versus 5.7 years that the funds have identical mortgage behavior or identical downside in every rate scenario.
Yield: why the higher snapshot is not a verdict
The cited 30-day SEC yield was 4.33% for VMBS as of September 11, 2026, and 4.75% for BND as of September 10, 2026. BND’s displayed figure is 0.42 percentage points higher in those snapshots, but the dates are different and the figures can change as portfolio income and market prices change.
A 30-day SEC yield is a standardized measure of recent net income. It is not a guaranteed distribution rate, a forecast of total return or a substitute for comparing price changes and principal repayments. Bond prices can fall when rates rise, and the yield number itself does not tell you how much of the return will come from price movement, reinvestment or changing cash flows.

Expense ratios
Vanguard’s VMBS page reported a 0.03% expense ratio as of December 19, 2025. Its BND page reported 0.03% as of April 28, 2026. At those dates, the stated annual operating-cost percentages were equal. On a $10,000 holding, 0.03% would be approximately $3 per year before the effects of market movement, although the actual dollar impact varies with your balance and the fund’s net assets.
Because the disclosures have different dates, treat the equality as a snapshot rather than a permanent promise. Check the latest prospectus and fund page before investing, especially if a small fee difference matters to your allocation.

VMBS had $17.6 billion in net assets as of August 31, 2026. BND had $398.9 billion in total net assets on the same date. BND is therefore much larger, but size alone does not establish better diversification, lower future costs or superior returns. It is context about scale, not a recommendation.

What the figures do not tell you
The supplied fund-page data do not provide a complete comparison of bid-ask spreads, tracking difference, tax lots, distributions or intraday liquidity. Those can matter when you place a large order or hold the ETF in a taxable account. Review the current trading details and tax documents for your brokerage and situation rather than assuming the larger fund is automatically cheaper to trade.
How to choose between VMBS and BND
- Define the bond allocation’s job. If the job is broad U.S. bond-market exposure in one holding, start with BND. If the job is a deliberate agency-MBS tilt, start with VMBS.
- List your existing bond funds. Identify how much of your portfolio is already in Treasuries, corporate bonds, agency MBS, ABS and CMBS. BND may overlap with several of them; VMBS specifically increases MBS concentration.
- Set a target percentage before looking at yield. Decide whether the fund is a core position or a satellite sleeve. A target prevents a temporarily higher yield from dictating your long-term allocation.
- Check current, like-dated data. Compare the latest expense ratios, 30-day SEC yields, duration, holdings and assets. The figures in this article are dated snapshots, not live quotes.
- Stress-test rate and prepayment scenarios. Ask how you would react if rates fall and mortgages prepay faster, or if rates rise and mortgage cash flows extend. Similar duration figures do not remove those questions.
- Choose the simplest implementation that meets the target. If BND already supplies the breadth you need, adding VMBS is an intentional overweight, not a required complement. If you need a single diversified bond ETF, BND may avoid unnecessary overlap.
- Rebalance by policy. Review the position on a schedule and trade only when it moves outside your chosen range or your objectives change. Do not switch funds solely because one month’s SEC yield is higher.
Examples of how the decision changes by investor
Investor seeking a one-fund bond core
An investor with stocks and no other fixed-income funds may value breadth more than sector precision. BND’s mandate covers government, corporate, mortgage and securitized sectors in one portfolio, making it the more direct match for a broad core allocation.
Investor already holding several broad bond funds
An investor who owns a broad bond ETF and wants more agency-MBS exposure could use VMBS as a targeted sleeve. The allocation should be sized with the MBS exposure inside the existing broad fund in mind; otherwise the portfolio may become more mortgage-heavy than intended.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Investor comparing only the displayed yields
Choosing BND solely because its cited 4.75% SEC yield exceeded VMBS’s 4.33% ignores the one-day difference in measurement dates, changing yields and the distinct mandates. The investor should first decide whether broad or agency-MBS exposure is wanted, then use a current yield comparison as a secondary check.
Investor focused on similar rate sensitivity
The 5.6-year VMBS and 5.7-year BND duration readings may look interchangeable. They are not a complete risk analysis because VMBS concentrates mortgage cash flows while BND combines multiple sectors. Use duration to frame rate sensitivity, not to conclude that the funds will have identical returns in a particular market.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating VMBS as a completely separate asset class from BND. BND already includes agency MBS, so the positions overlap.
- Calling one ETF universally safer. The supplied data do not establish a universal winner, and concentration and sector behavior matter alongside duration.
- Reading SEC yield as a promised return. It is a standardized recent-income measure, not a guarantee.
- Ignoring as-of dates. VMBS and BND’s fee and yield figures were reported on different dates, and VMBS’s displayed duration has no stated date in the excerpt.
- Using fund size as a proxy for fit. BND’s $398.9 billion in assets versus VMBS’s $17.6 billion describes scale, not suitability.
- Assuming equal duration means equal behavior. Mortgage prepayments can alter the timing and sensitivity of VMBS cash flows.
- Overlooking concentration. A large VMBS position can make agency MBS a dominant part of the fixed-income portfolio even when the investor intended a broad mix.
Bottom line for a portfolio decision
BND is the better starting point for most investors who mean “core U.S. bond exposure”: its index spans Treasuries, government-related and corporate bonds, agency MBS, ABS and CMBS. VMBS is the more precise tool when the objective is to emphasize agency MBS pass-through securities from Ginnie Mae, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
The cited Vanguard pages show equal 0.03% expense ratios, close displayed durations of 5.6 and 5.7 years, and dated SEC yields of 4.33% for VMBS and 4.75% for BND. Those figures help describe the funds, but they do not override the central portfolio question: do you want broad diversification or a deliberate mortgage-sector allocation? Verify the latest fund disclosures before trading because all of these statistics can change.
