Constellation Energy (Nasdaq: CEG) fits investors who want a concentrated nuclear and clean-reliable-power thesis, while Vistra (NYSE: VST) fits investors who want more diversified competitive generation, retail electricity exposure and hedged merchant cash flow. Both can benefit from rising demand for dependable electricity, including demand from data centers, but they monetize that demand differently. CEG emphasizes nuclear output and long-duration corporate contracts; VST combines nuclear and gas generation with solar, storage, retail operations and capacity-market exposure.

Neither stock can be called cheaper, safer or universally better without synchronized share prices, valuation multiples, tax circumstances and a clear risk tolerance. The practical decision is which earnings pattern, contract profile and execution risk belongs in your portfolio.

The short answer: choose the earnings exposure you actually want

Constellation is the purer nuclear-power investment. Its reported platform includes 55 gigawatts of generation capacity, approximately 2.5 million customer accounts and a fleet led by nuclear assets, supplemented by gas, geothermal, hydro, wind and solar. Its recent strategy has been to secure long-term buyers for reliable, carbon-free electricity while pursuing nuclear-life extensions and the restart of the Crane Clean Energy Center.

Vistra is a broader competitive-power and retail company. Its assets include nuclear, natural gas, solar and storage, and its results are influenced by wholesale energy prices, capacity prices, hedging, retail margins and acquisitions. That mix can provide more ways to earn money, but it also makes the investment case less concentrated and more dependent on market conditions and integration.

  • Choose CEG as the starting point if your central thesis is that nuclear generation will earn attractive long-term contracts as utilities, corporations and data centers seek reliable low-carbon power.
  • Choose VST as the starting point if you prefer diversified merchant-power cash flow, significant hedging, retail exposure and potential upside from capacity prices.
  • Own neither automatically if the current valuation, position size or volatility is inconsistent with your portfolio. The operating outlook does not remove the need for a price discipline.

How the two companies make money

Constellation: nuclear reliability with increasingly visible contracts

Constellation’s core asset is a large nuclear fleet that can run at high utilization and produce electricity without direct carbon emissions during generation. The company also owns or operates gas, geothermal, hydro, wind and solar resources, but the investment narrative is dominated by reliable nuclear output and the price customers will pay to secure it.

In its 2026 second-quarter materials, Constellation reported 44,160 gigawatt-hours of nuclear production and a 93.0% nuclear capacity factor, excluding Salem and its ownership interest in South Texas Project. Capacity factor is a production measure, not a guarantee of future earnings: outages, refueling schedules, market prices and contract terms still affect results.

Long-term power-purchase agreements (PPAs) can reduce the uncertainty of selling every megawatt at a spot price. Constellation announced an additional 920 megawatts of PPAs, generally lasting 15 to 20 years and beginning between 2029 and 2032. These contracts improve revenue visibility for the covered output, although their economics depend on contract pricing, operating performance, credit quality of counterparties and the costs required to keep plants available.

The Crane project adds a separate development and regulatory element. Constellation is advancing the restart of the Crane Clean Energy Center and working on license-renewal milestones for two New York assets. A successful restart or license extension could preserve valuable generation, but the schedule, approvals, capital needs and operating execution are not risk-free.

Vistra: merchant generation, retail customers and portfolio diversification

Vistra’s earnings come from a wider set of businesses. It sells power from nuclear, gas, solar and storage assets into competitive markets, manages a retail electricity business and uses hedges to lock in portions of future generation economics. Capacity markets can provide additional revenue when grid operators pay resources to remain available, while retail operations add customer and weather exposure that a pure generator would not have.

This diversification changes the way VST responds to market moves. Higher power or capacity prices can lift realized revenue, but weaker prices can pressure uncontracted generation. Retail margins can vary with weather, customer usage and procurement costs. Acquisitions can add cash flow and scale, but they also create financing, integration and operational demands.

Vistra’s second-quarter 2026 release attributed EBITDA growth primarily to higher realized energy and capacity prices and three months of contribution from plants acquired from Lotus. That explanation highlights both the opportunity and the sensitivity: earnings can grow when market prices and acquired assets cooperate, but they are not solely determined by long-term nuclear contracts.

Financial snapshot from the 2026 results

Measure Constellation Energy Vistra
Latest reported quarterly signal Q2 2026 adjusted operating earnings of $2.55 per share Q2 2026 ongoing-operations adjusted EBITDA of $1.767 billion
2026 outlook Adjusted operating earnings guidance raised to $11.50-$12.50 per share Adjusted EBITDA guidance of $6.8-$7.6 billion; adjusted free cash flow before growth of $3.925-$4.725 billion
2025 reported baseline Not stated in the cited 2026 materials Ongoing-operations adjusted EBITDA of $5.912 billion; adjusted free cash flow before growth of $3.592 billion
Forward generation hedging Not stated in the cited materials Approximately 100% of expected 2026 generation, 94% for 2027 and 72% for 2028 as of August 3, 2026
Generation and customer scale 55 GW of generation capacity; approximately 2.5 million customer accounts Exact comparable fleet and account totals were not stated in the cited materials

These measures are not interchangeable. Adjusted operating earnings per share and adjusted EBITDA describe different levels of the income statement, while adjusted free cash flow before growth is a cash measure with its own definition. Both companies caution that non-GAAP measures are not standardized and may not be comparable across issuers. Use the table to understand the signals, not to rank one figure against another.

Contract visibility and data-center demand

Why CEG has the cleaner long-duration contract story

Constellation’s additional 920 MW of PPAs, starting from 2029 through 2032 and generally lasting 15 to 20 years, give the company a visible route to monetize future nuclear output. Long contracts can support financing and planning because a portion of production has a committed buyer. They can also limit upside if market prices rise well above the contracted price, and they expose the company to performance obligations over many years.

Constellation’s public comments connect the Crane restart, corporate agreements and New York asset life extensions with the need for reliable power. That is a coherent thesis for investors who believe electricity demand from data centers and industrial loads will grow faster than new firm generation can be built.

Why VST is a blended contracted-and-merchant case

Vistra also has long-term nuclear agreements with large customers, including agreements associated with AWS and Meta. These contracts complement, rather than replace, the company’s merchant and retail exposure. The result is a blended model: contracted demand can anchor part of the portfolio, while open generation and capacity positions retain sensitivity to market prices.

Vistra’s hedging figures show how management is managing that sensitivity. As of August 3, 2026, approximately 100% of expected 2026 generation was hedged, compared with 94% for 2027 and 72% for 2028. Hedging can protect near-term cash flow from adverse price moves, but it also means the company may capture less of a sudden price increase. The percentages can change as new transactions are executed and as expected output changes.

Earnings quality: stability, upside and what can go wrong

Constellation’s main earnings risks

  • Unplanned or extended nuclear outages: Constellation’s Q2 2026 release noted unfavorable nuclear outages affecting adjusted earnings. A reactor that is offline cannot sell its expected output, and repairs or replacement power can add costs.
  • Crane restart execution: Restarting a retired facility requires engineering work, regulatory approvals, financing and a schedule that can slip. The commercial case depends on completing those steps at an acceptable cost.
  • Calpine integration: The expanded Calpine platform increases scale but also adds integration and regulatory complexity. Synergies are not automatic, and management must combine systems, people, contracts and operating practices.
  • Contract and market mismatch: A long-term PPA provides visibility only for the contracted volume and terms. Uncontracted output remains exposed to market conditions, and a contract can become less attractive if operating costs rise.
  • Valuation expectations: A strong nuclear narrative can be reflected in the share price before the associated earnings arrive. A company can execute well and still deliver a disappointing stock return if expectations were too high.

Vistra’s main earnings risks

  • Commodity-price volatility: Merchant generation benefits from favorable power and capacity prices but is exposed when those prices decline. Hedging reduces this risk for covered output, not for every future period.
  • Large-load offtake execution: Vistra’s 2025 Form 10-K warns that slower electricity-demand growth or failure to execute large-load offtake agreements could hurt financial performance, growth opportunities and the stock price.
  • Acquisition integration: Assets acquired from Lotus and the Cogentrix acquisition add potential cash flow and complexity. Integration, financing, maintenance and regulatory requirements can affect the realized return.
  • Retail weather and margin swings: Customer usage, extreme temperatures, procurement costs and competitive pricing can move retail results independently of fleet production.
  • Operational concentration in competitive markets: A diversified fleet is not the same as a regulated utility. Market rules, congestion, fuel costs and regional capacity mechanisms can change the economics of individual plants.

Dividends, buybacks and balance-sheet priorities

Constellation’s cited materials state that its fiscal-year 2025 dividend per share increased 10%, with another 10% increase expected in 2026. That establishes a clearer dividend-growth signal than the Vistra releases summarized here. It does not make CEG’s dividend risk-free: coverage depends on recurring cash generation, outage performance, capital spending and debt obligations.

Vistra’s cited releases emphasize cash flow, debt repayment, buybacks and dividends rather than a comparable dividend-growth pledge. Investors should therefore evaluate VST’s capital return through the amount and durability of free cash flow, debt reduction, repurchase timing and the capital required for acquisitions and plant maintenance.

Do not compare dividend yields without using the same date and share-price basis. A higher yield can reflect a lower price, a different payout policy or greater perceived risk; it is not by itself evidence of a safer income stream.

Which stock is better for common portfolio objectives?

If you want a nuclear and clean-reliable-power thesis

CEG is the more direct fit. Its 55 GW platform, 93.0% reported nuclear capacity factor excluding Salem and South Texas Project ownership, new 15-to-20-year PPAs and Crane restart plans all reinforce a nuclear-led thesis. The trade-off is concentration: nuclear outages, regulatory decisions and project execution matter more to the investment outcome.

If you want diversified merchant cash flow

VST is the more natural fit. Its mix of nuclear, gas, solar, storage, retail and capacity-market exposure gives earnings more than one driver. The trade-off is greater sensitivity to wholesale prices, retail conditions and acquisition integration, even though hedging can dampen near-term volatility.

If your priority is data-center electricity demand

Both companies can participate, but through different structures. CEG offers a more concentrated clean-reliable-power and long-duration-contract route, including the additional 920 MW of PPAs. VST combines nuclear agreements with AWS and Meta and a larger merchant platform, so data-center growth is one contributor rather than the entire thesis.

If you need dependable income

Start with the dividend policy and cash-flow coverage, not the headline yield. CEG has a stated 10% fiscal-year 2025 dividend-per-share increase and another 10% increase expected in 2026. VST’s cited materials focus on a broader capital-allocation program. For either stock, inspect maintenance capital spending, debt maturities, contract cash flows and the effect of outages before treating the dividend as portfolio income.

If you are uncomfortable with commodity exposure

CEG may be easier to underwrite, but it is not insulated from markets. Its uncontracted output, outage performance and operating costs still matter. VST’s hedge book provides more explicit near-term protection for expected generation, yet the business remains visibly tied to power and capacity prices over time.

A practical comparison checklist before buying

  1. Record a synchronized price: Use the same trading date and closing-price convention for CEG and VST. Do not infer relative cheapness from different articles or stale quotes.
  2. Calculate comparable valuation measures: Compare enterprise value to the relevant earnings or cash-flow measure, and document whether the numerator includes debt and acquired assets. Adjusted EBITDA and adjusted operating EPS are not substitutes.
  3. Read the contract disclosures: Identify contracted megawatts, start dates, duration, pricing structure, escalation terms, customer credit and the share of expected output that remains merchant.
  4. Review outage and maintenance assumptions: Check recent outage effects, refueling schedules, planned capital spending and management’s sensitivity to lower availability.
  5. Stress-test power prices: Model a case with lower energy and capacity prices, then a case with higher prices. For VST, vary hedge percentages and retail margins; for CEG, vary uncontracted nuclear output and contract timing.
  6. Check project milestones: For CEG, follow Crane restart and license-renewal approvals plus Calpine integration. For VST, follow Cogentrix and other acquisition integration, large-load offtake agreements and plant performance.
  7. Size the position: A stock with merchant or project risk should not be sized as though it were a bond. Set a maximum portfolio weight before buying and define what evidence would make you reduce it.
  8. Revisit the thesis after results: Track realized prices, hedging, outages, free cash flow, debt and contract additions against the original assumptions rather than reacting only to headline EPS.

How to interpret the 2026 guidance

Constellation raised full-year 2026 adjusted operating-earnings guidance to $11.50-$12.50 per share after reporting $2.55 of adjusted operating earnings per share in the second quarter. A raised range is a positive operating signal, but it is a forecast, not a guarantee. Investors should ask which assumptions changed, how much of the improvement is recurring, and whether outage or contract timing contributed.

Vistra reaffirmed 2026 ongoing-operations adjusted EBITDA guidance of $6.8-$7.6 billion and adjusted free cash flow before growth of $3.925-$4.725 billion after reporting $1.767 billion of second-quarter adjusted EBITDA. The range is intentionally wide enough to reflect market and operating uncertainty. Compare future results with the midpoint and with the cash actually available after maintenance needs, debt service and growth investment.

What a balanced decision looks like

A portfolio decision should separate business quality from price. CEG can be the better business for an investor who wants concentrated nuclear exposure, but an aggressive valuation can reduce prospective returns. VST can offer diversified cash-flow sources and hedging, but a low valuation would not eliminate commodity, retail or integration risks.

For a long-term investor, the most defensible choice is the stock whose downside you can explain. With CEG, that means being comfortable with outage, regulatory and restart uncertainty. With VST, it means being comfortable with market-price cycles, retail variability and acquisition execution. If you cannot state those risks and the conditions that would invalidate your thesis, the position is not yet ready for a portfolio.
