Short answer: Vertiv offers more concentrated exposure to critical digital infrastructure—data-center power, cooling, IT systems and related services. Eaton reaches data centers through its electrical businesses but remains a broader power-management and industrial company. Choose between them by deciding whether your portfolio needs thematic concentration or diversification, then test demand visibility, segment economics, cash generation, execution risk and valuation. Neither company’s backlog growth, strategic positioning or data-center exposure proves that its shares are attractively priced.
What the comparison means for an investor
Vertiv and Eaton both benefit from investment in electrical capacity and data-center infrastructure, but they are not the same type of holding. Vertiv describes its business around critical digital infrastructure: power, thermal management, IT infrastructure and services for data centers, communication networks, and commercial and industrial customers. Eaton is a multi-segment power-management company. Its electrical businesses sell into data-center projects, while other Eaton segments serve different industrial, aerospace and commercial markets.

That distinction changes the portfolio question. A Vertiv position is a more direct way to express a view on critical digital infrastructure spending, especially the systems surrounding high-density computing. An Eaton position gives exposure to that demand through a larger, more diversified company whose results also depend on non-data-center markets. More concentration can increase upside when the theme and execution are strong, but it can also make a holding more sensitive to one investment cycle.
What each company sells
Vertiv: systems surrounding compute
Vertiv’s stated portfolio includes power equipment, cooling and thermal-management systems, IT infrastructure, and lifecycle services. Its customers include data centers and communication networks as well as commercial and industrial environments, so it would be inaccurate to treat every dollar of Vertiv revenue as data-center revenue.

The company’s 2025 shareholder letter described investment in manufacturing, engineering, research and development, service capacity and system-level solutions. That emphasis matters because a data-center buildout requires coordinated electrical, thermal and service capabilities rather than a single piece of equipment. Vertiv CEO Giordano Albertazzi summarized the company’s intended differentiation after the fourth quarter of 2025: “What differentiates Vertiv is our ability to anticipate and shape the industry direction.” The statement is management’s positioning, not independent proof of a competitive advantage, so investors should test it against margins, delivery performance and cash generation.
Eaton: electrical infrastructure inside a diversified portfolio
Eaton’s electrical businesses participate in data-center construction and expansion, including the Electrical Americas and Electrical Global segments. Eaton’s annual reporting also identifies data-center end markets as a source of organic sales strength. However, the company operates across multiple segments, including aerospace and other electrical and industrial activities. Consequently, a strong data-center cycle can lift Eaton’s electrical results without determining the outcome for the whole company.
Eaton defines backlog and order measures as indicators of expected future revenue for Electrical Americas, Electrical Global and Aerospace. Those measures are useful for tracking Eaton’s own demand, but they should not be combined mechanically with Vertiv’s total-company backlog. Different segment boundaries, periods and definitions can produce very different percentages.
Side-by-side business profile
| Question | Vertiv | Eaton |
|---|---|---|
| Primary positioning | Critical digital infrastructure for data centers, communications and other environments | Broad power-management company with electrical businesses serving data centers and many other end markets |
| Products and services highlighted in company materials | Power, cooling, IT infrastructure and lifecycle services | Electrical power-management products and systems across Electrical Americas, Electrical Global and other segments |
| Data-center exposure | More direct and concentrated, but not all revenue is from data centers | Meaningful within electrical businesses, diluted at the consolidated-company level by broader segments |
| Portfolio implication | Higher thematic purity and potentially greater cycle sensitivity | Broader diversification and less dependence on a single infrastructure theme |
What recent orders and backlog actually show
Recent reports from both companies show strong demand indicators, but the figures cover different periods and scopes. Read them as company-specific evidence rather than as a league table.
| Company and period | Reported measure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Vertiv, fiscal 2025 and Q4 2025 | Q4 backlog of $15.0 billion, up 109% year over year; Q4 book-to-bill about 2.9x | Total-company backlog and quarterly book-to-bill. Hyperscale and colocation data centers in the Americas were identified as primary order drivers. |
| Eaton, Q4 2025 | Electrical Americas orders up 16%; backlog up 31% year over year | Electrical Americas segment indicators, not consolidated Eaton backlog. |
| Eaton, Q2 2026 | Rolling-average orders up 41% in Electrical Americas and 33% in Electrical Global; electrical-sector backlog up 43% year over year | Segment and sector measures with rolling-average methodology. They are not directly comparable with Vertiv’s $15.0 billion total-company backlog. |
| Eaton, Q2 2026 filing | Demand strength included data-center end markets in Electrical Americas | Confirms data-center contribution to the segment’s demand, without isolating a consolidated data-center revenue figure. |
Vertiv’s Q4 2025 release, dated February 11, 2026, linked the order strength to hyperscale and colocation projects in the Americas. Eaton’s Q2 2026 disclosures provide newer segment demand data, but the reports do not create a matched, same-quarter comparison. Use the date, geography, segment and definition every time you cite one of these numbers.
Growth, cash flow and balance-sheet evidence
Vertiv’s reported fiscal 2025 results
Vertiv reported 2025 net sales of $10.2 billion, up 28% year over year. It reported $2.1 billion of operating cash flow and adjusted free cash flow of $1.9 billion. Adjusted free cash flow is a non-GAAP measure; investors must review Vertiv’s reconciliation before comparing it with a cash-flow measure from another issuer. At year-end 2025, Vertiv reported net leverage of approximately 0.5x.

These figures indicate substantial cash generation and a comparatively modest reported leverage ratio at that date. They do not by themselves establish future growth, margin durability or the quality of every backlog dollar. Working-capital movements, customer deposits, capital spending and the cost of expanding capacity all affect how backlog becomes cash.
What is and is not established for Eaton
The supplied Eaton disclosures establish strong orders and backlog in its electrical businesses, and they identify data-center demand as a contributor. They do not provide a directly comparable consolidated Eaton backlog value, operating-cash-flow figure or leverage figure in the same set of facts. Use Eaton’s FY2025 annual report and Q2 2026 filing to collect organic growth, segment margins, cash conversion, capital expenditure, debt and guidance before making a numerical comparison.
Do not compare Vertiv’s adjusted free cash flow with Eaton’s reported or adjusted earnings metrics as if they were interchangeable. First align accounting definitions, periods and adjustments. A useful model separates revenue growth, gross or segment margin, operating expenses, working capital, capital expenditure, interest expense and taxes.
A portfolio-fit framework
1. Decide how much concentration you want
Vertiv is the cleaner expression of a critical-digital-infrastructure thesis because its stated product scope is centered on power, cooling, IT infrastructure and services. That concentration can make the shares more responsive to data-center capital spending, but it also increases dependence on the timing of that spending, customer project schedules and Vertiv’s ability to add capacity.
Eaton spreads exposure across electrical and other businesses. Diversification can reduce the effect of a slowdown in one end market, although it also means a data-center boom may have less impact on consolidated results than an investor expects. Review Eaton’s segment contribution rather than assuming that electrical-sector growth flows one-for-one into company-wide earnings.

2. Test demand visibility without treating backlog as revenue
Backlog provides an indication of orders not yet recognized as revenue; it is not a guarantee of shipment timing, pricing or profit. Ask what portion is cancellable, how long conversion normally takes, whether deposits or milestone billing are involved, and whether capacity or components could delay delivery. For Vertiv, start with the $15.0 billion Q4 2025 backlog and approximately 2.9x book-to-bill, then examine subsequent quarterly conversion. For Eaton, analyze Electrical Americas and Electrical Global separately because the reported percentages are segment measures.

3. Compare economics on a like-for-like basis
Use each company’s latest full-year and quarterly filings to build the same worksheet:
- Organic sales growth by segment and region.
- Gross margin or segment operating margin and the factors moving it.
- Operating cash flow, capital expenditure and cash conversion.
- Net debt, interest cost and leverage.
- Guidance ranges, the assumptions behind them and changes from the prior outlook.
- Share count, dilution, buybacks and acquisition spending.
Vertiv’s FY2025 figures are a useful starting point, while Eaton’s Q2 2026 guidance is the more current outlook for Eaton. Do not mix an earlier Vertiv annual snapshot with a later Eaton quarter and call the result a contemporaneous comparison.
4. Examine execution and capacity
High orders create an execution test. Vertiv has discussed investment in manufacturing, engineering, research and development and service capacity. Investors should track whether those investments expand output without eroding margins or increasing working-capital needs. Eaton investors should examine plant capacity, supplier availability and project execution in the electrical businesses.

For both companies, investigate component shortages, labor availability, logistics, warranty costs, customer concentration, tariffs and the effect of acquisitions. A rising backlog can conceal delivery risk if the company cannot secure transformers, switchgear, cooling components, semiconductors or skilled installation capacity.
5. Separate business quality from valuation
A strong end market does not make a stock cheap. Value each company using assumptions that match its reporting structure: forward earnings or free-cash-flow multiples, revenue and margin scenarios, terminal growth, net debt and dilution. Run at least a base, optimistic and stressed case. In the stressed case, reduce data-center growth, extend backlog conversion, compress margins and increase working-capital investment.
The available company figures do not establish which stock is better valued at current market prices. A portfolio decision requires the share price on the date of analysis, consensus or internally modeled earnings, and a required return appropriate to the investor.

Key risks that can change the thesis
Data-center capital-spending cycles
Hyperscale and colocation customers can accelerate or defer projects. A pause in permitting, power availability, financing or customer demand can move orders between quarters. Vertiv’s concentration makes this cycle especially important; Eaton’s diversification may cushion it but can also reduce the benefit of a boom.
Customer and project concentration
Large projects can create impressive orders while concentrating exposure to a small number of customers or contractors. Read customer-concentration disclosures, contract terms and cancellation provisions in each company’s 10-K and 10-Q filings.
Supply chain, tariffs and inflation
Electrical and thermal systems rely on complex component networks. Tariffs, material costs, freight and labor can pressure margins if contracts do not allow timely price recovery. Check management commentary for backlog repricing, lead times and supplier constraints rather than assuming that backlog value equals backlog profit.
Capacity and quality execution
Rapid expansion can produce overtime, expedited freight, quality issues or warranty claims. Monitor inventory growth relative to sales, receivables, cash conversion and service costs. Strong order growth with weak cash conversion warrants investigation.
Acquisition and integration risk
Both industrial companies can use acquisitions to add technology, geographic reach or capacity. Evaluate purchase price, assumed debt, integration costs, retention of technical staff and whether acquired margins match the buyer’s stated targets.

Vertiv’s approximately 0.5x year-end 2025 net leverage provides a dated reference point, not a permanent condition. New borrowing, acquisitions, buybacks and a downturn can change leverage quickly. For Eaton, calculate consolidated and segment-relevant leverage from the latest filing and test interest coverage under lower earnings.

How to perform a disciplined comparison
- Set the portfolio role. Decide whether the position is intended as concentrated data-center exposure, diversified industrial exposure, income, quality growth or a cyclical trade.
- Choose one reporting date. Use the latest available Q2 2026 releases for current guidance, then use FY2025 annual reports for audited context. Label older Q4 2025 figures as historical.
- Normalize the metrics. Put revenue, organic growth, margins, cash flow, capital spending, debt and share count on the same period and accounting basis.
- Map exposure. For Vertiv, identify the portions associated with data centers, communications and commercial or industrial customers where disclosed. For Eaton, separate Electrical Americas, Electrical Global, Aerospace and other segments.
- Analyze backlog quality. Record order definition, geography, customer type, conversion timing, cancellation terms and book-to-bill methodology.
- Stress the model. Reduce project starts, delay conversion, raise costs and test a lower margin. Compare the resulting cash flow and leverage with your risk limit.
- Apply a valuation rule. Set the multiple or discounted-cash-flow assumptions before looking for a conclusion. Include a margin of safety for cyclical and execution risks.
- Decide position size. A concentrated Vertiv thesis may deserve a smaller allocation than a diversified Eaton position if both are expected to contribute similar portfolio risk.
Where an enterprise UPS fits
An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) maintains electrical continuity when utility power fails or fluctuates. Enterprise data centers use systems engineered for far greater power, redundancy, monitoring and service requirements than consumer UPS units. A consumer UPS can protect a workstation or network device; it is not equivalent to the modular, facility-scale power infrastructure used in a data center.
This distinction matters when researching the companies. Vertiv’s power portfolio and Eaton’s electrical businesses are relevant to enterprise critical-power systems, but a retail UPS specification should not be used as a proxy for either company’s data-center capability, backlog or economics. Evaluate capacity, topology, redundancy, efficiency, battery technology, service coverage and compliance for the specific facility.
Which investor profile fits each company?
| Investor priority | More natural fit | Reason and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Direct critical-digital-infrastructure exposure | Vertiv | Its stated scope is centered on power, cooling, IT infrastructure and services, although not all revenue is data-center revenue. |
| Broader industrial and power-management diversification | Eaton | Data-center demand supports electrical businesses within a wider multi-segment portfolio. |
| Maximum sensitivity to hyperscale and colocation buildouts | Vertiv, subject to valuation and cycle risk | Its Q4 2025 order commentary specifically cited those customers in the Americas. |
| Lower dependence on one end-market theme | Eaton | Other segments can offset some electrical-market volatility, but they can also dilute data-center upside. |
| Evidence of recent cash generation | Vertiv has disclosed figures; Eaton requires filing-based analysis | Vertiv reported FY2025 operating cash flow and adjusted free cash flow. Comparable Eaton figures were not included in the available facts. |
Bottom line for a portfolio decision
Vertiv fits an investor who intentionally wants concentrated exposure to the infrastructure systems around computing and accepts greater thematic and execution sensitivity. Eaton fits an investor who wants data-center participation inside a broader electrical and industrial portfolio. Current reports from both companies show strong demand, but Vertiv’s $15.0 billion total-company backlog and Eaton’s segment-level order and backlog percentages measure different things.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Vertiv a pure-play data-center company?
No. Vertiv is more focused on critical digital infrastructure, but it also serves communication networks and commercial and industrial environments, so its entire revenue base should not be treated as data-center revenue.
Can Vertiv’s backlog be compared directly with Eaton’s backlog?
No. Vertiv reported a $15.0 billion total-company backlog for Q4 2025, while Eaton reported segment and sector measures for Electrical Americas and Electrical Global. The periods, scopes and definitions differ.
Does strong data-center demand mean either stock is a buy?
No. Demand evidence does not establish valuation. You still need current share prices, earnings or cash-flow estimates, balance-sheet analysis and a downside scenario.
What should I check in each company’s filings first?
Start with segment revenue and margins, organic growth, operating cash flow, capital spending, debt, customer concentration, backlog definitions, capacity constraints, tariffs, acquisition integration and updated management guidance.
