Re:

Verizon’s TracFone Acquisition: What Changed for Straight Talk, Walmart Family Mobile, and Lifeline in 2026

Verizon owns TracFone, Straight Talk, and Walmart Family Mobile—but ownership did not mean an instant network switch. Here is what changed, what expired, and how Lifeline customers are affected.

Verizon completed its acquisition of TracFone Wireless on November 23, 2021. Straight Talk and Walmart Family Mobile remain active prepaid brands; neither was automatically converted into Verizon postpaid service or shut down.

  • Verizon has been moving TracFone-family customers toward its network, but the change was gradual—not an immediate nationwide switch.
  • Your brand name does not prove which network your particular line uses. The SIM, device, account records, and activation history matter.
  • The original federal protections for rate plans, transition support, and many no-cost device or SIM replacements generally ended on November 23, 2024.
  • Acquisition-related federal Lifeline and 5G commitments generally continue through November 23, 2028. California has separate protections, including California LifeLine participation through November 23, 2041.

Verizon bought TracFone Wireless and its portfolio of prepaid brands on November 23, 2021. That portfolio included Straight Talk, Walmart Family Mobile, SafeLink, TracFone, Total Wireless, Simple Mobile, and other value-focused services. The acquisition changed ownership and set a long-term direction toward Verizon’s network, but it did not instantly put every customer on Verizon or turn every prepaid account into a standard Verizon wireless plan.

For a customer today, four separate questions matter:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Does Verizon own my brand?
  2. Which network does my specific SIM and phone use?
  3. Did my plan, number, balance, device, or Lifeline benefit carry over?
  4. Which acquisition protections still apply in 2026?

What Verizon actually acquired

Verizon announced the agreement to acquire TracFone from América Móvil on September 14, 2020, and completed the transaction on November 23, 2021. The deal covered TracFone’s prepaid and value wireless business, not just one brand or one network arrangement. Verizon’s acquisition announcement describes the transaction’s scope, while the closing announcement confirms the completion date.

Verizon’s stated strategy was to bring its network, including 5G, devices, and related services to a large prepaid customer base. But TracFone historically used wholesale arrangements with multiple network operators. The Federal Communications Commission therefore required a gradual migration rather than an immediate “flash cut” of customers using AT&T or T-Mobile wholesale networks.

That distinction still matters. Ownership, brand, plan, and underlying network are not the same thing. A Straight Talk or Walmart Family Mobile account can be Verizon-owned while a particular older line remains associated with a legacy SIM or network arrangement. Current support and activation pages continue to describe network-transition procedures, which means customer-level verification is safer than relying on the brand name.

Acquisition timeline and protection deadlines

Date Event Why it matters
September 14, 2020 Verizon announced its agreement to acquire TracFone. The transaction covered the prepaid brand portfolio and Lifeline operations.
November 18, 2021 The California Public Utilities Commission approved the transaction with additional conditions. California imposed requirements beyond the federal order, including long-term California LifeLine participation.
November 22, 2021 The FCC approved the transfer subject to conditions. The conditions addressed migration, plans, device replacements, unlocking, wholesale access, Lifeline, and compliance reporting.
November 23, 2021 Verizon completed the acquisition. This is the closing date used to calculate the major federal and state deadlines.
November 23, 2024 Most federal three-year transition protections ended. The original federal rate-plan, transition hotline and website, and ordinary no-cost replacement commitments generally ended.
December 31, 2025 California’s target date for enrolling at least 200,000 California LifeLine subscribers. The reviewed public sources do not establish whether Verizon met that target.
July 24, 2025 The CPUC approved a settlement extending certain migration protections to some post-acquisition California customers. Those customers received notice, free SIM or device assistance, possible refunds, and third-party-network service through at least December 31, 2025. That date has passed.
November 23, 2026 California’s stated five-year comparable-plan protection is scheduled to end. This is a California-specific protection and is separate from the expired federal three-year rate-plan condition.
November 23, 2028 Most federal seven-year Lifeline, marketing, 5G-plan, and 5G-device commitments reach their stated end date. These acquisition-specific commitments should not be described as permanent.
November 23, 2041 California’s 20-year California LifeLine participation condition reaches its stated end date. California’s participation requirement lasts substantially longer than the federal acquisition commitment.

The detailed requirements are in FCC Order 21-121 and the California Public Utilities Commission’s acquisition conditions.

What changed for Straight Talk

Straight Talk remains a prepaid brand

Straight Talk became part of Verizon’s value and prepaid portfolio. It remains sold through Walmart, Walmart.com, and StraightTalk.com. It was not automatically converted into Verizon postpaid service, and the acquisition did not require every customer to move to a more expensive plan at closing.

Verizon’s acquisition FAQ also said customers would not automatically have to replace their phones when the transaction closed. The original transition framework called for notice before a line had to move and for compatible devices or SIM cards during the covered migration period.

Verizon now positions Straight Talk around its 4G LTE and 5G network. In January 2025, it announced refreshed Straight Talk plans featuring benefits such as 5G Ultra Wideband access, premium data, hotspot allowances, device credits, and other features. Those plans and prices can change, so readers should check the current Straight Talk announcement and plan materials rather than treating the 2025 features as permanent.

A Straight Talk account does not identify the network by itself

The current Straight Talk activation flow still displays Verizon-, AT&T-, and T-Mobile-compatible SIM paths. That is evidence that legacy or transition cases remain relevant; it is not proof that every older Straight Talk line is still active on AT&T or T-Mobile.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Similarly, the Straight Talk plan-selection page indicates that some premium features depend on Verizon-network activation. A customer may therefore have the same brand, account, or plan family but receive different network-dependent features depending on the SIM and device.

What a Straight Talk customer should do

  1. Check the SIM and device before changing anything. Do not infer the network from the words “Straight Talk” on an account or box.
  2. Run the IMEI compatibility check. Use Straight Talk’s activation tools to determine whether the phone is accepted, needs a new SIM, or must be replaced.
  3. Confirm the plan’s network-dependent benefits. Ask whether 5G Ultra Wideband, hotspot, premium data, international calling, roaming, or device credits require Verizon-network activation.
  4. Follow a migration notice carefully. Keep the account number, account PIN, phone number, and any deadline in the notice. Do not cancel the old line before the new SIM or device is activated.
  5. Review current unlocking terms for the exact device. Compatibility and unlock status are separate questions.

The federal requirement for no-cost replacement devices or SIMs during the ordinary transition was time-limited and generally ended on November 23, 2024. In 2026, do not assume Verizon must provide a free replacement solely because it acquired TracFone. A current provider offer or a state-specific protection could produce a different result.

Straight Talk unlocking

The FCC required Verizon to extend a 60-day unlocking policy to certain post-closing TracFone devices purchased and activated on Verizon’s network. Devices capable of automatic unlocking were to unlock automatically after 60 days; others were to have a manual path.

That requirement should not be simplified to “every Straight Talk phone unlocks after 60 days.” Coverage depends on the device, purchase and activation facts, and the applicable policy. A phone can be technically compatible with Verizon and still be locked. Conversely, an unlocked phone may not pass a particular prepaid activation system’s IMEI or device-eligibility checks.

What changed for Walmart Family Mobile

The Walmart relationship continues

Walmart Family Mobile is now part of Verizon’s value portfolio but remains a Walmart-specific prepaid brand available through Walmart and Walmart.com. The acquisition did not turn Walmart into a wireless carrier or eliminate the retail relationship. Account, prepaid, and Lifeline questions should generally go to Walmart Family Mobile support rather than Verizon’s regular postpaid support.

Verizon’s Walmart Family Mobile announcement describes the brand’s ownership, retail relationship, plan changes, and Lifeline positioning.

Walmart Family Mobile migration is not necessarily immediate

Walmart Family Mobile’s current transition support says customers can generally keep their existing devices. If a plan is served on a non-Verizon network, the company says it will manage a transition to Verizon and contact affected customers. A Verizon-compatible phone or SIM may be required.

Customers who choose to switch voluntarily can use a Verizon-compatible SIM or a new Verizon-compatible device. The Walmart Family Mobile transition FAQ and network-switch FAQ are the best places to check the current process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is the central distinction: Verizon owns Walmart Family Mobile, but that fact alone does not prove that every line immediately used Verizon’s network.

Some Walmart Family Mobile plans were retired, but not necessarily removed from existing accounts

In a May 2025 announcement, Verizon listed these Walmart Family Mobile plan changes:

  • A $19.88 plan with 4 GB of data.
  • A $24.88 plan with 8 GB of data.
  • A $34.88 plan with 20 GB of data and 8 GB of hotspot data.
  • A $19.88 add-a-line price on the new plans.
  • Retirement of the $29.88 and $39.88 plans for new sales, while existing customers could remain on those plans.

These are dated examples, not a promise that the same prices or benefits remain available in 2026. The current Walmart Family Mobile service-plan page requires a ZIP code and warns that availability, network performance, and plan details can vary.

A plan being retired is not the same as a plan being forcibly changed. Distinguish among:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A plan no longer sold to new customers but still available to existing customers.
  • A plan that must change because the phone or SIM cannot use the required network.
  • A plan that changes because the customer voluntarily selects a new offer.
  • A plan whose benefits change after migration under the provider’s current terms.

Questions to ask before a Walmart Family Mobile migration

Public transition materials do not establish one universal answer for every account. Before accepting a new SIM or changing plans, ask:

  • Will the phone number remain the same?
  • Will the service end date, unused data, account balance, and auto-refill status carry over?
  • Will the current hotspot, roaming, international calling, 5G, or premium-data benefits remain?
  • Is a new SIM or eSIM required?
  • Is the phone unlocked, and which unlocking policy applies?
  • Is a Lifeline discount attached to the line, and will it remain after migration?

Do not cancel the old line until the new activation works and the number is confirmed. A failed activation or port can interrupt service and make number recovery more complicated.

Lifeline: what Verizon’s acquisition changed

Lifeline did not disappear

Verizon assumed responsibility for continuing TracFone’s Lifeline participation. Under the FCC’s conditions, Verizon or its affiliates must continue Lifeline service in the same general service area where TracFone offered it for at least seven years after closing—generally through November 23, 2028. Service can be provided over Verizon’s network or through MVNO arrangements.

The federal commitments also included meeting applicable minimum service standards, making a qualifying low-cost 5G Lifeline plan available within six months of closing, offering cost-effective 5G devices to Lifeline customers for at least seven years, and continuing Lifeline marketing and advertising through the commitment period. The full conditions appear in the FCC order; Verizon also summarized them in its Lifeline commitment announcement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verizon’s original public announcement also referred to a no-charge Lifeline plan and a three-year commitment. That shorter period generally ended on November 23, 2024. It should not be confused with the separate seven-year service and 5G commitments that remain longer.

Which Verizon value brands offer Lifeline?

Verizon’s current Lifeline support page identifies TracFone, SafeLink Wireless, and Walmart Family Mobile among its prepaid brands offering Lifeline-related service. It does not identify ordinary Straight Talk service as a federal Lifeline provider.

Brand Typical Lifeline structure
SafeLink A dedicated Lifeline-supported service commonly associated with no-cost talk, text, and data for eligible households, subject to current state and provider terms.
TracFone Offers Lifeline-related service and directs customers to its Lifeline resources.
Walmart Family Mobile A paid prepaid brand that advertises a Lifeline discount applied to an eligible active plan. Eligibility and the amount vary by location and offer.
Straight Talk Do not assume ordinary Straight Talk plans qualify for Lifeline. A specific current plan and state eligibility page would need to confirm that.

The broader TracFone family is described on the TracFone Wireless brand page. Brand availability and plan design are not identical across the portfolio.

How much is the Lifeline benefit?

USAC currently describes the standard federal Lifeline benefit as up to $9.25 per month for qualifying phone, internet, or bundled service, or up to $34.25 per month for qualifying consumers on Tribal lands. Only one Lifeline discount is allowed per household.

  • eSIM: During activation, you can choose to use your physical SIM or switch to eSIM. The eSIM is available on iPhone 11 and newer models, Google Pixel 2 and higher, and compatible Samsung devices.

Walmart Family Mobile materials advertise a $10 monthly discount in some areas and a larger California benefit. That does not necessarily conflict with USAC’s federal maximum: the provider amount can reflect a state program, plan structure, or combined support. A customer should check the provider’s current offer and state rules instead of treating one figure as universal.

Being Lifeline-eligible also does not automatically mean receiving free unlimited service. SafeLink may offer a no-cost service plan to eligible customers, while Walmart Family Mobile commonly applies a discount to a paid plan. Review what the benefit covers before enrolling.

Federal Lifeline eligibility in 2026

For 2026, federal income eligibility is generally 135% or less of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. In the 48 contiguous states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories, USAC lists these annual income limits:

Household size 2026 annual income limit
1 $21,546
2 $29,214
3 $36,882
4 $44,550
5 $52,218
6 $59,886
7 $67,554
8 $75,222
Each additional person Add $7,668

Alaska and Hawaii have higher limits. Eligibility can also be based on participation in programs such as SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, Federal Public Housing Assistance, or Veterans Pension and Survivors Benefit. Use USAC’s eligibility page and the National Verifier process for the current rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Lifeline maintenance rules

  • One per household: Only one Lifeline benefit is permitted per household, not one per person.
  • Use the service: If the subscriber pays nothing out of pocket, the service generally must be used at least once every 30 days. Otherwise, it may be suspended after notice.
  • Recertify: USAC says a requested annual recertification generally must be completed within 60 days.
  • Report changes: Report an address change, loss of eligibility, or a second Lifeline benefit in the household.
  • Use official channels: The National Verifier and participating provider processes should not require an unauthorized government-enrollment fee.

USAC explains these maintenance requirements on its About Lifeline page.

California has additional protections

California customers should not apply the federal deadlines to every state protection. The CPUC imposed separate conditions when it approved Verizon’s acquisition of TracFone.

  • Verizon or TracFone must participate in California LifeLine for 20 years after closing, through November 23, 2041.
  • Verizon was required to enroll at least 200,000 California LifeLine subscribers by December 31, 2025. The public sources reviewed for this article do not establish whether that target was met.
  • At least 15% of California LifeLine subscribers were required to be in low-income disadvantaged communities by December 31, 2023.
  • LifeLine customers were to receive a phone at no cost, including 5G phones after the first year of the merger where Verizon offered 5G retail service.
  • Verizon was required to offer comparable voice, text, and data plans at the same or lower price than TracFone’s then-current offerings for five years, through the stated November 23, 2026 endpoint.
  • Verizon-branded stores were required to advertise and offer California LifeLine enrollment.
  • TracFone customers were to be migrated to Verizon’s network within two years, with priority for California LifeLine customers at risk of service disruption.

These conditions apply to California and should not be presented as nationwide rules. The CPUC’s July 2025 Decision 25-07-015 approved a settlement involving certain post-acquisition California customers. It provided notice, free SIM or device assistance, possible refunds, and third-party-network service through at least December 31, 2025. That temporary endpoint has passed as of 2026, but the broader 2021 California requirements remain a separate issue.

What expired and what remains in 2026?

Protection or commitment General status in 2026
Maintain existing TracFone rate plans Federal three-year commitment generally expired November 23, 2024.
Transition hotline and website Federal three-year commitment generally expired November 23, 2024.
No-cost device or SIM replacement during ordinary federal migration Generally expired November 23, 2024. Do not assume a free replacement without a current offer or applicable state protection.
Federal Lifeline service commitment Generally continues through November 23, 2028.
Federal Lifeline marketing and 5G-device commitments Generally continue through November 23, 2028.
California comparable-plan condition Scheduled to reach its stated end date November 23, 2026.
California LifeLine participation Required through November 23, 2041, under the stated 20-year condition.

“Generally” matters because the exact result can depend on the customer’s brand, state, device, purchase date, activation date, current plan, and provider policy. The end of a federal acquisition commitment does not automatically end a separate California condition or a provider’s voluntary customer policy.

What to do now: customer checklists

For Straight Talk customers

  • Check the phone’s IMEI and SIM compatibility through Straight Talk’s activation page.
  • Confirm whether the line is already using a Verizon-compatible SIM.
  • Do not change plans solely because Verizon owns Straight Talk.
  • Before switching, compare hotspot, premium-data, international, roaming, 5G, and device-credit benefits.
  • If you received a migration notice, save the deadline, account PIN, account number, and phone number.
  • Do not cancel the existing line until the replacement SIM or device is working.
  • Check the exact device’s unlock status rather than relying on a general “60-day” statement.

For Walmart Family Mobile customers

  • Ask whether the line is already on Verizon or remains on a legacy non-Verizon arrangement.
  • Confirm device and SIM compatibility before making the switch.
  • Ask in writing which number, service end date, balance, unused data, and plan benefits will transfer.
  • Compare the current grandfathered plan with current offers before voluntarily changing it.
  • Check whether a Lifeline discount is attached to the line and whether recertification is current.
  • Use Walmart Family Mobile’s support channels for prepaid and Lifeline issues.

For Lifeline customers

  1. Verify eligibility through USAC’s National Verifier-related process.
  2. Confirm that nobody else in your household already receives Lifeline.
  3. Choose a participating provider that serves your state and offers the type of benefit you want.
  4. Ask whether the benefit is a free plan, a discount on a paid plan, or a combination of federal and state support.
  5. Keep documentation for SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, housing assistance, veterans benefits, or income eligibility.
  6. Use the service at least once every 30 days when required.
  7. Complete annual recertification within the stated deadline.
  8. Report address or eligibility changes promptly.

If service stops after a SIM or device change

  1. Do not cancel the account or discard the old SIM.
  2. Confirm that the replacement SIM is for the intended network and is associated with the correct phone number.
  3. Check the phone’s IMEI, unlock status, and activation status.
  4. Restart the phone after activation and test calls, text messages, mobile data, and emergency calling.
  5. Contact the brand’s prepaid support team—not necessarily Verizon postpaid support—with the account PIN, SIM number, IMEI, and migration notice.
  6. If the number was ported or appears missing, state clearly that you need number recovery or a failed-activation review.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • “All TracFone brands now run on Verizon.” Too broad. Verizon owns the brands and has been migrating customers toward its network, but legacy and transition cases require verification.
  • “Straight Talk is Verizon postpaid.” Straight Talk is a Verizon-owned prepaid/value brand, not automatically a standard Verizon postpaid account.
  • “Every Walmart Family Mobile line immediately changed networks.” Current support materials still describe managed migration from non-Verizon network arrangements.
  • “Everyone received a free replacement phone.” The federal replacement obligation was time-limited and generally ended in 2024.
  • “Lifeline is always free.” SafeLink and Walmart Family Mobile can use different offer structures; a qualifying customer may receive a free plan or a discount on a paid plan.
  • “The benefit is always $9.25.” That is the federal standard maximum for many customers, not necessarily the final amount after Tribal or state benefits and provider plan structures.
  • “Verizon guaranteed Lifeline forever.” The federal acquisition-specific commitment generally runs through 2028. California’s separate participation condition runs through 2041.
  • “Verizon met California’s 200,000-subscriber target.” Do not make that claim without a current CPUC compliance filing.
  • “A compatible phone is automatically unlocked.” Compatibility, unlock status, SIM type, eSIM support, and IMEI eligibility are separate checks.
  • “Moving to Verizon is always better.” Coverage can improve in one location and worsen in another. Compare the specific home, workplace, indoor locations, travel routes, and device bands.

What the acquisition means for your bill and coverage

Verizon said customers would not be required to move to a more expensive plan when the acquisition closed. That did not freeze every plan or price permanently. The federal three-year rate-plan commitment generally ended in 2024, and providers can introduce, retire, or modify offers under current terms.

  • Includes 3-in-1 sized SIM cards (Nano, Micro, Standard), with options of a CDMA or GSM SIM for network selection and compatibility.
  • SIM cards and service plans are compatible with both 4G LTE and 5G networks.
  • Service plan sold separately required for active service.
  • Powerful coverage on SIMPLE Mobile’s nationwide 5G network
  • No contracts, no mystery fees.

A network migration can also produce mixed results. Verizon coverage may be stronger at one address and weaker at another than the previous AT&T- or T-Mobile-based arrangement. A newer Verizon-compatible phone may provide access to 5G or other features, but a customer could lose a grandfathered price or a plan benefit after voluntarily switching.

Before making a change, document the current plan name, price, renewal date, data allowance, hotspot allowance, international features, account balance, and Lifeline status. Then compare those details with the proposed replacement plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Straight Talk now Verizon?

Verizon owns Straight Talk, but Straight Talk remains a prepaid/value brand rather than standard Verizon postpaid service. Many current offerings are Verizon-network oriented, but the brand name alone does not prove which network a particular older line uses. Check the SIM, device IMEI, and activation records.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need a new phone or SIM because of the acquisition?

Not automatically. Some customers can keep their existing devices, while others—especially customers on legacy network arrangements—may need a Verizon-compatible SIM or phone. The federal no-cost replacement commitment generally ended November 23, 2024, so do not assume a free replacement is still required in 2026.

Will my Straight Talk or Walmart Family Mobile number and balance transfer?

There is no single public rule that guarantees identical treatment for every plan and migration. Do not cancel the old line. Ask the brand to confirm the number, service end date, unused data, account balance, auto-refill, and plan benefits before completing the change.

Does Verizon’s acquisition mean I automatically keep my Lifeline benefit?

Lifeline service continued under Verizon’s acquisition commitments, but enrollment and plan treatment depend on the brand, state, and account. Confirm that the benefit is attached to your new line, complete any required National Verifier recertification, and check whether the offer is a free plan or a discount on a paid plan.

Can I get Lifeline through Straight Talk?

Do not assume so. Verizon’s current Lifeline page identifies TracFone, SafeLink Wireless, and Walmart Family Mobile among its Lifeline-related brands, but it does not identify ordinary Straight Talk service as a federal Lifeline provider. Verify a specific current offer and state eligibility before enrolling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long will Verizon’s TracFone Lifeline commitment last?

The main federal acquisition-related Lifeline and 5G commitments generally continue through November 23, 2028. California has a separate condition requiring California LifeLine participation through November 23, 2041.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Verizon’s 2021 TracFone acquisition changed who owns Straight Talk and Walmart Family Mobile and put both brands on a gradual path toward Verizon’s network. It did not instantly change every customer’s network, plan, phone, price, or Lifeline status. In 2026, check the actual SIM and IMEI, preserve your account information before migrating, verify plan benefits in writing, and treat Lifeline as a state- and provider-specific benefit rather than an automatic free-service promise.
