Short answer: an index-linked vehicle hedge is useful only if a tradable contract actually exists, its benchmark tracks your vehicles, and you can trade the size and maturity you need. Exponential Exchange announced the Exponential Used Vehicle Index (Bloomberg ticker AUTO) on June 28, 2023, describing it as a wholesale used-vehicle index intended to support derivatives. That announcement confirms the index launch and the issuer’s plan, but it does not establish that AUTO futures or options later listed, remain available, or have published terms.
A conventional futures hedge uses a position whose gains and losses offset movements in an underlying exposure. For a fleet or lease portfolio, the decisive issue is not whether a product is called an “index hedge” or a “future”; it is benchmark fit, basis risk, liquidity, settlement, documentation and cost. The evidence reviewed does not justify calling AUTO superior to a conventional futures hedge.

Why vehicle values create a hedgeable risk
Leasing and fleet economics depend on what a vehicle will be worth later, not only on its purchase price today. A lessor sets a residual value when a lease begins and uses that estimate to calculate the lessee’s depreciation cost. When the vehicle returns, its market price can be above or below the assumed residual. A lower-than-expected price creates a loss for the lessor or owner; a higher price can leave the asset worth more than the booked or contracted residual.

Those drivers do not affect every portfolio equally. A vehicle-value index can move differently from a particular fleet because of differences in make, body type, powertrain, age, mileage, condition, geography, channel (auction, dealer or direct sale) and valuation date. That difference is the source of basis risk: the hedge instrument and the asset being hedged do not change by the same amount.
Who is exposed?
Typical exposures include a leasing company that will receive vehicles at lease end, a rental company that plans to sell a large number of cars, an insurer managing salvage or total-loss values, and a fleet owner whose balance sheet contains vehicles that will be disposed of later. A manufacturer, dealer or buyer can face the opposite exposure if falling prices reduce the value of inventory or if rising prices increase future acquisition costs.
What Exponential Exchange announced about AUTO
On June 28, 2023, Exponential Exchange announced the Exponential Used Vehicle Index, identified by Bloomberg ticker AUTO. The release described AUTO as a tradable index representing wholesale used-vehicle values. The company said that, together with derivatives it characterized as “soon-to-launch,” the index would allow insurers and large fleet owners to transfer price-fluctuation exposure to other market participants.
The announcement supports three specific facts:
- A public launch announcement for an index named AUTO occurred on that date.
- The stated use case was wholesale used-vehicle price exposure, including transfers of fleet and insurer portfolio risk.
- The issuer intended to support derivatives linked to the index.
It does not prove that an exchange-listed future or option subsequently began trading. No current contract symbol, contract size, maturity calendar, settlement rule, margin schedule, open interest, trading volume or clearing arrangement was established in the available material. Treat AUTO’s derivative status as unverified until an exchange, regulator, clearing venue or Exponential Exchange’s current official documentation confirms it.
What the issuer claims—and what remains unproven
Exponential Exchange said AUTO was more responsive to price changes, had higher correlations with rental, lease and fleet portfolios, and required less data than other automotive indices. These are issuer assertions. The material reviewed did not provide an independent methodology validation, a published correlation study, a hedge-effectiveness analysis, a trading record or a comparison of transaction costs and liquidity.
Ryan Naughton, Exponential Exchange’s CEO, said in the June 28, 2023 release: “Efficient derivatives markets have long been a primary means of risk mitigation for asset owners across a wide range of industries – from energy to agriculture to manufacturing.” That is company commentary about the role of derivatives, not evidence that AUTO contracts achieved a particular hedge result.

How a conventional futures hedge works
The Federal Reserve’s futures research describes the basic offset. Someone who owns an asset and fears a price decline can sell futures; someone who will need to buy an asset and fears a price increase can buy futures. If the spot exposure and futures price move in sufficiently related ways, a gain on one side partly offsets a loss on the other.
Downside exposure: selling futures
Suppose a rental company expects to sell vehicles in six months. A decline in wholesale prices would reduce sale proceeds. A short position in a suitably related vehicle-value future would tend to gain when the benchmark falls, offsetting part of that reduction. The hedge is imperfect if the company’s cars differ from the futures benchmark or if the sale occurs at a different time or in a different market.
Upside exposure: buying futures
A company that expects to acquire vehicles later, or that has a cost linked to rising vehicle prices, may buy futures. A rising futures price can offset the higher cash cost. The correct direction depends on the economic exposure, not on whether the instrument is branded an index product.
Why the hedge is never automatic
A futures position has its own daily price changes, margin calls, expiration and roll requirements. The hedge works only to the extent that the contract’s settlement price is related to the exposure’s eventual cash price. The Federal Reserve’s general framework does not identify a standard exchange-listed auto futures contract, so a “traditional auto futures” comparison must begin by identifying an actual available contract rather than assuming one exists.
AUTO-style index hedge versus a conventional futures hedge
| Question | Index-linked vehicle hedge | Conventional futures hedge |
|---|---|---|
| What is the benchmark? | Potentially a wholesale used-vehicle index such as AUTO; the exact constituents and methodology must be confirmed. | The settlement benchmark specified by the futures contract, which could represent a different vehicle market or a non-auto commodity. |
| Is a tradable instrument confirmed? | AUTO’s 2023 index announcement mentioned derivatives, but current listing and terms were not verified. | Only a specific listed or bilaterally negotiated contract can be evaluated; no universal standard auto future is established here. |
| Portfolio fit | May be closer if its vehicle mix, age, geography and valuation window resemble the fleet or lease book. | Depends entirely on the contract’s underlying and how it relates to the portfolio. |
| Basis risk | Can arise from differences between the index and individual vehicles; the issuer’s stronger-correlation claim is unverified. | Can arise from any mismatch between the futures benchmark and the cash exposure, plus timing and location differences. |
| Liquidity and capacity | Unknown until current volume, open interest, bid-ask spreads and executable size are documented. | Must be checked for the particular contract and maturity; a listed contract is not necessarily liquid at the required size. |
| Settlement | AUTO publication, maturity, cash or physical settlement and roll rules were not located. | Set by the exchange or bilateral documentation and should be known before trading. |
| Operational requirements | Could involve clearing, collateral, valuation and reporting arrangements that are not established for AUTO. | Exchange, clearinghouse or dealer documentation defines margin, collateral, reporting and close-out procedures. |
Measure basis risk before choosing an instrument
Correlation is useful but not sufficient. A high historical correlation can still produce a poor hedge if the relationship changes during a stress period, if the hedge ratio is wrong, or if the index settles before the portfolio is sold.

Vehicle mix and condition
Compare the index’s eligible makes, models, body styles and powertrains with the actual book. A portfolio concentrated in electric vehicles, luxury cars, commercial vans or high-mileage rentals may not track a broad wholesale index. Condition, mileage and refurbishment costs can create another gap between an index value and realized sale proceeds.

Geography and sales channel
Wholesale prices vary by region and by channel. An index based on national auction observations may not match a fleet that sells primarily through local dealers or direct channels. Transport costs, weather events and regional inventory can widen the difference.
Age and valuation timing
A lease-return portfolio may mature in a specific month, while an index is published weekly or monthly and a futures contract settles on a separate schedule. A hedge that expires before vehicles are sold leaves the residual exposure unprotected. Rolling the hedge introduces roll price and liquidity risk.
Nonlinear effects
Vehicle values can fall faster than expected during recessions, supply disruptions or technology shifts. If the portfolio contains leases with mileage or condition penalties, the realized cash flow may change nonlinearly even when an index moves smoothly. Test the hedge against adverse scenarios rather than relying only on an average correlation.
Confirm that the product exists before comparing economics
The first diligence question is not “Which hedge is better?” It is “Can I trade the proposed hedge?” For AUTO, obtain current evidence of:
- The venue or dealer offering the derivative
- The exact contract name and symbol
- Contract unit, notional value and minimum trade size
- Listed maturities and last-trading dates
- Index publication schedule and methodology
- Cash or physical settlement rules
- Margin, collateral and clearing arrangements
- Bid-ask spreads, average volume and open interest
- Historical settlement data sufficient for hedge analysis
If those details cannot be obtained from an exchange, regulator, clearinghouse or current issuer documentation, treat AUTO as an announced index rather than an available hedge product. A theoretical derivative design is not a substitute for an executable market.
Other design concepts in the record
U.S. patent US6622129B1 describes a residual-value index built from actual lease-return values, with possible subindices, exchange-traded or over-the-counter futures and options, and insurance structures. The patent shows that such risk-transfer designs have been contemplated. Patent language does not establish implementation, listing, liquidity, pricing or commercial success.

CME Group’s general material on rolling futures indices illustrates how an index can reference futures settlement prices and roll exposure through time. It discusses uses such as benchmarking, product creation and over-the-counter derivative settlement. That example is not an auto index and should not be treated as evidence about AUTO’s construction or availability. It does, however, highlight questions any vehicle index contract must answer: which prices are sampled, how contracts are rolled, how the index handles expiration and how settlement is calculated.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA practical evaluation process for a fleet or lease portfolio
- Define the exposure. Record the number of vehicles, expected disposal or acquisition dates, carrying values, residual assumptions, geography, vehicle mix, mileage and sale channel. Separate depreciation risk from operating costs, credit risk and maintenance risk.
- Choose the economic direction. A future seller generally needs protection against falling values; a future buyer generally needs protection against rising prices. Document the cash-flow loss the hedge is intended to offset.
- Map candidate benchmarks. For AUTO or any conventional contract, obtain the underlying definition, data sources, weighting, publication frequency, eligible vehicles and geographic scope. Reject a benchmark that does not represent the exposure closely enough for the intended use.
- Estimate the hedge ratio. Use historical portfolio values and benchmark observations, where available, to estimate how much notional is needed. Include stress periods and do not assume a one-for-one relationship.
- Check tradability. Verify executable prices, normal trade size, margin, collateral, position limits, clearing and the ability to enter and exit at the required dates.
- Match settlement to the cash event. Compare maturity and settlement timing with lease returns, auction sales or purchases. Account for weekends, publication lags, holidays and roll dates.
- Model the residual basis exposure. Analyze vehicle mix, condition, region, channel and timing differences. Show the unhedged amount under normal, adverse and extreme price paths.
- Review legal, accounting and tax treatment. Confirm counterparty authority, documentation, hedge-accounting eligibility, collateral treatment, reporting and jurisdiction-specific rules with qualified professionals.
- Set governance limits. Define who may trade, maximum notional, permitted maturities, margin-call funding, valuation sources, independent price verification and exit procedures.
- Monitor and rebalance. Update the exposure as vehicles are sold, leases mature, fleet composition changes or the benchmark relationship deteriorates. A hedge is a risk-control program, not a one-time purchase.
Costs and risks that can overwhelm a seemingly good hedge
Margin and liquidity calls
Futures are marked to market. A hedge can generate cash margin calls even when it is economically protecting a longer-term asset. The treasury team must be able to fund those calls without selling vehicles at an unfavorable time.
Roll costs
If the exposure lasts longer than one contract maturity, the position must be rolled or replaced. The price difference between expiring and new contracts can create a gain or loss unrelated to the portfolio’s value change.
Execution costs
Bid-ask spreads, brokerage, clearing, financing and collateral costs reduce the benefit of the hedge. Thin trading can make a quoted price unavailable for the desired size.
Model and data risk
An index may use data that are delayed, revised, sparse or concentrated in a particular sales channel. A model that appears stable in ordinary markets may break when used-vehicle supply, financing conditions or consumer preferences shift abruptly.

When an index-linked hedge could make sense
An index-linked structure is most plausible when the index has a transparent methodology, a close statistical and economic relationship to the portfolio, sufficient liquidity, and maturities that match the disposal or acquisition schedule. It may also be useful when a portfolio contains many vehicles and an aggregate benchmark is more practical than hedging each model separately.
Those conditions must be demonstrated, not assumed from the word “index” or from the issuer’s correlation claim. If AUTO’s current derivative availability cannot be confirmed, a risk manager should not treat the announced index as a live hedge instrument.
When a conventional futures hedge may be preferable
A conventional contract may be preferable when its venue, rules, margin process and historical liquidity are well established, even if its benchmark is less customized. Standardization can simplify execution, valuation and governance. The trade-off is that a standardized benchmark may create more basis risk for a specialized fleet or lease book.
There is no universal winner. The correct choice is the instrument that provides the most reliable offset after basis risk, liquidity, margin, roll, transaction and operational costs—not the instrument with the most attractive marketing description.
Bottom-line decision checklist
- Have you confirmed that the proposed AUTO derivative is currently tradable?
- Can you obtain complete contract specifications and settlement rules?
- Does the benchmark represent your vehicles’ mix, age, condition, geography and sale channel?
- Can you quantify and stress the remaining basis risk?
- Is there enough liquidity for your notional and intended exit?
- Can your treasury function fund margin and roll requirements?
- Are clearing, counterparty, accounting, tax and regulatory obligations documented?
- Do independent data support hedge effectiveness, rather than relying only on the issuer’s assertions?
Until those questions have documented answers, AUTO is best understood as a 2023 announced used-vehicle index with an intended derivatives application, not as a verified substitute for an established futures hedge.
