There is no defensible current winner on dividend yield or leverage from the disclosed figures alone. Hindustan Zinc reported ₹5,594 crore of net cash at 31 March 2026, while Vedanta reported ₹53,250 crore of net debt and 1.2x net debt/EBITDA at 31 March 2025. Those balance-sheet dates are a year apart. Hindustan Zinc reported a ₹10 per-share FY2026 dividend; Vedanta reported ₹34 per share of total interim dividend for FY2025-26. Without matching share prices and matching dividend periods, neither pair produces a like-for-like yield ranking.
The practical way to compare the two is to align the price date, dividend period, fiscal reporting date and consolidation basis, then examine commodity exposure, operating margins, costs, capital spending and cash available for distributions. The figures below are issuer-reported disclosures and should be treated as dated evidence rather than an independent forecast.

The comparison in one view
Vedanta and Hindustan Zinc are not interchangeable investments. Vedanta describes a portfolio spanning zinc, copper, silver, critical minerals, ferrochrome and display glass. Hindustan Zinc’s reporting centers on zinc, lead and silver operations. A broader portfolio can spread some commodity exposures, but it can also introduce more operating, regulatory, financing and project variables. A narrower portfolio can be easier to understand while leaving earnings more sensitive to a smaller set of metals.
| Measure | Hindustan Zinc | Vedanta | What can and cannot be concluded |
|---|---|---|---|
| Balance-sheet date | 31 March 2026 | 31 March 2025 | Dates are not synchronized. |
| Net debt/(net cash) | ₹5,594 crore net cash | ₹53,250 crore net debt | Useful directional evidence, but not a current like-for-like ranking because the dates and entity bases differ. |
| Net debt/EBITDA | Not stated in the cited FY2026 disclosure | 1.2x at 31 March 2025 | One company’s ratio cannot be compared with a cash figure for the other. |
| Reported dividend | ₹10 per share for FY2026; total payout ₹4,225 crore | ₹34 per share of total interim dividend in FY2025-26; ₹43.50 per share in FY2024-25 | These are different dividend descriptions and do not establish yield without a price and a matched period. |
| EBITDA margin | 54% in FY2026, versus 51% in FY2025 | Not stated in the cited material on a directly comparable basis | Hindustan Zinc’s margin is an operating indicator, not a complete risk measure. |
Hindustan Zinc’s chief financial officer, Sandeep Modi, said in the company’s FY2025-26 report: “During the year, we crossed ₹40,000 crore mark in revenue and ₹20,000 crore mark in EBITDA for the first time, while achieving the lowest zinc cost of production in the last five years.” That is a company statement, not an independently verified comparison.

How to calculate a meaningful dividend yield
Dividend yield is a price-based measure, not a substitute for the dividend-per-share figure. The basic trailing formula is:
Trailing dividend yield = dividends paid or declared for a defined trailing period ÷ share price on the stated observation date × 100
For example, a reader comparing FY2026 distributions would need the same market-price date for both securities and a clear decision about whether the calculation uses dividends paid, dividends declared, or dividends attributable to that fiscal year. A forward yield would instead use an expected future dividend and must be labelled an estimate.

Match the dividend periods
Hindustan Zinc reported ₹10 per share for FY2026 and a total payout of ₹4,225 crore. Vedanta’s FY2025-26 reporting states ₹34 per share of total interim dividend. An interim amount is not automatically a full-year dividend, and annualising it would create an assumption that may not be fulfilled. Vedanta also reported ₹43.50 per share in FY2024-25, but that prior-year amount cannot be paired with Hindustan Zinc’s FY2026 figure as though both covered the same period.

Use a price from the same date
No synchronized share-price pair is established by the cited official material. Therefore, a current yield percentage should not be published from these figures alone. A lower share price can make a historical dividend yield look high even when the cash distribution has not increased. Conversely, a rising price can reduce the yield on the same dividend.
Show the inputs separately
A transparent comparison displays the dividend per share, the price date and the resulting percentage in separate columns. It should also identify whether the dividend is final, interim, declared or paid, and whether the percentage is trailing or forward. Do not present a historical or interim payout as a guaranteed recurring return.
What the debt figures actually say
Debt comparisons require the same reporting date, currency, accounting perimeter and definition. At minimum, collect gross borrowings, cash and liquid investments, net debt, net debt/EBITDA, interest expense or coverage, operating cash flow and the maturity schedule. Also check whether the number is consolidated or company-only and whether financing sits at a parent, subsidiary or holding-company level.

Hindustan Zinc’s latest disclosed position
Hindustan Zinc’s FY2025-26 chief financial officer statement reports ₹5,594 crore of net cash at 31 March 2026, compared with ₹1,169 crore of net debt a year earlier. Net cash means reported cash and similar liquid resources exceeded the debt included in that calculation at that date. It does not mean every future project is funded or that the balance cannot change with metal prices, working capital, tax, capital expenditure or distributions.

Vedanta’s disclosed position
Vedanta’s FY2024-25 finance review reports ₹53,250 crore of net debt and 1.2x net debt/EBITDA at 31 March 2025. The ratio links debt to a reported operating-earnings measure, but it is affected by the commodity cycle and by the company’s definition of EBITDA. A strong-price year can reduce the ratio without a large debt repayment; a weaker-price year can increase it without new borrowing.
Why these numbers do not produce a live ranking
The Vedanta figure is dated 31 March 2025, while the Hindustan Zinc figure is dated 31 March 2026. They may also reflect different consolidation bases. It is therefore inappropriate to state that one currently has lower leverage simply because one number is net cash and the other is net debt. Update both balance sheets to the same reporting date, then compare like-for-like definitions.
Debt-service checks beyond net debt
- Review the next 12 to 24 months of maturities and committed facilities, not just the headline year-end balance.
- Compare interest expense with operating cash flow and EBITDA, while checking whether EBITDA includes unusual items.
- Separate cash held by operating subsidiaries from debt raised at a parent or holding-company level; cash may not be freely transferable.
- Test a lower-metal-price case to see how quickly net debt/EBITDA could rise.
- Include lease liabilities, guarantees and project-related commitments when the filings identify them as material.
Business and operating risk are different for each company
Portfolio concentration
Hindustan Zinc’s principal exposure is to zinc, lead and silver. That focus can make production, cost and price drivers more visible, but it also concentrates results in a smaller group of commodities. Vedanta reports a wider set of natural-resource and industrial businesses, including zinc, copper, silver, critical minerals, ferrochrome and display glass. Diversification may reduce reliance on one metal, yet each additional segment brings its own execution, regulation, capital needs and market cycle. “Diversified” should not be treated as synonymous with “safe.”
Commodity-price and foreign-exchange sensitivity
Hindustan Zinc’s FY2026 KPI disclosure attributes the change in EBITDA margin to several interacting factors: improved zinc and silver prices, favorable exchange rates and lower production costs, partly offset by strategic-hedging losses, lower lead prices and lower silver volume. This is a useful illustration of why a single margin number cannot capture risk. The same company can benefit from one metal and currency move while losing from another or from a hedge position.

For Vedanta, a multi-commodity portfolio means the analyst must inspect segment-level revenue, operating profit, volumes, unit costs and realized prices rather than relying on group totals. A group result can conceal a weak segment behind a strong one, or a temporary benefit from one commodity behind pressure elsewhere.
Production, cost and project execution
Track mined and refined volumes, recovery rates, unit costs, maintenance shutdowns and the timing of expansions. Low cost of production can protect margins during a price downturn, but only if the cost advantage persists after sustaining capital expenditure and inflation. New projects can increase future output while consuming cash and adding delivery risk before they contribute earnings.
Accounting and business-perimeter risk
Vedanta’s FY2026 quarterly and audited-year filing distinguishes continuing and discontinued operations. Trend analysis must use the same business perimeter in every period. A headline growth rate can be misleading if an operation has been classified differently, sold, demerged or excluded from continuing operations.
How to judge dividend sustainability
A dividend is sustainable only when the business can fund it after operating costs, interest, taxes and the investment required to keep or expand production. A large declared payout can coexist with a temporarily strong commodity cycle, asset sales or lower capital spending; none of those necessarily recur.

Start with cash, not earnings alone
Compare operating cash flow with dividends, sustaining capital expenditure, expansion capital expenditure and financing costs. Then examine free cash flow after those commitments. Net cash at one year-end supports financial flexibility, but it does not by itself prove that the next dividend will be unchanged.
Check the board policy and one-off items
Read the company’s dividend policy, the language around interim and final payments, and any stated conditions tied to leverage, liquidity or project funding. Identify one-time gains, working-capital releases, asset sales and unusually favorable prices. A payout funded by a one-off inflow should not be extrapolated as recurring income.
Relate distributions to capital plans
Mining and industrial businesses must spend to maintain mines, smelters, plants and safety systems. A company that increases expansion spending may deliberately reduce distributions even when reported EBITDA rises. Conversely, a temporary reduction in capital expenditure can lift free cash flow without improving long-term earning power.
Hindustan Zinc’s FY2026 disclosure combines net cash of ₹5,594 crore with a ₹4,225 crore total payout and a ₹10 per-share dividend. Those are facts about the company’s reported position and decision for that period, not a promise of future payments. Vedanta’s ₹34 per-share interim dividend and its reported debt position should be assessed against Vedanta’s own cash generation, maturities and capital commitments rather than against Hindustan Zinc’s payout in isolation.
A repeatable step-by-step comparison
- Set the observation date. Choose a market date for both share prices and a fiscal reporting date for both balance sheets. Record the exact dates.
- Define the dividend window. Use the same trailing 12-month period or the same fiscal year. Mark each payment as interim, final, declared or paid.
- Calculate each yield. Divide the matched dividend per share by the same-date share price. Label a forward calculation as an estimate and show the assumed dividend.
- Normalize the debt data. Collect gross debt, cash, net debt, net debt/EBITDA, interest cost and maturities on the same consolidated or standalone basis.
- Build a cash-coverage view. Compare operating cash flow and free cash flow with dividends, sustaining capex, expansion capex, taxes and interest.
- Map the operating drivers. List each company’s key commodities, volumes, realized prices, unit costs, foreign-exchange exposure and hedging effects.
- Review the business perimeter. Check continuing versus discontinued operations, demergers, disposals and segment reclassifications before comparing trends.
- Stress-test the conclusion. Ask how a fall in zinc, lead, silver or other relevant prices, a currency move, a production interruption or higher capex would affect cash and leverage.
- Separate evidence from judgment. Quote the issuer-reported number with its date, then state the interpretation and its limitation. Do not turn one year’s margin or dividend into a permanent expectation.
How to interpret Hindustan Zinc’s 54% EBITDA margin
Hindustan Zinc reported an EBITDA margin of 54% for FY2026, up from 51% in FY2025. Management linked the improvement to zinc and silver prices, favorable exchange rates and lower costs, while citing strategic-hedging losses, lower lead prices and lower silver volume as offsets. The margin indicates strong operating profitability in that reported period; it does not measure debt maturity risk, dividend coverage, mine life, regulatory exposure or the volatility of future metal prices.
For a useful comparison, obtain Vedanta’s equivalent margin on the same accounting basis and period, then examine segment margins rather than comparing a consolidated number with a single-business margin. Also ask whether the margin change came from prices, volumes, costs, currency or hedging. Those causes have different persistence.
Which investor profile fits which evidence?
| Investor question | Evidence to prioritize | Reasoning discipline |
|---|---|---|
| “I want income.” | Matched trailing yield, payout history, free-cash-flow coverage and dividend policy. | Do not rank ₹10 and ₹34 without a common price date and dividend period. |
| “I want a stronger balance sheet.” | Same-date net debt, cash, maturities, interest coverage and parent-versus-subsidiary funding. | Do not compare Hindustan Zinc’s 31 March 2026 net cash with Vedanta’s 31 March 2025 net debt as if simultaneous. |
| “I want less commodity concentration.” | Segment revenue and profit mix, commodity correlations, project and regulatory exposure. | More segments can diversify prices while adding complexity and execution risk. |
| “I want operating resilience.” | Unit costs, volumes, maintenance needs, capex intensity and margins through a full cycle. | A 54% margin in one year is not a complete resilience test. |
Questions to ask before relying on a yield or debt headline
- Are both prices from the same trading date and exchange convention?
- Do both dividends cover the same trailing period, and are they paid, declared, interim or final?
- Are the debt figures consolidated, standalone or parent-level?
- Are cash and investments available to the entity that owes the debt?
- Does the EBITDA definition include exceptional or non-recurring items?
- Would a 20% fall in the relevant metal prices still cover interest, sustaining capex and the stated payout?
- Have continuing and discontinued operations been aligned?
- Are hedging gains or losses changing the reported result?
- What capital projects, environmental obligations or closures could absorb cash before the next dividend?
Bottom line
Use the disclosed figures as starting points, not as a ready-made verdict. Hindustan Zinc’s latest cited balance sheet shows ₹5,594 crore of net cash at 31 March 2026, while Vedanta’s cited finance review shows ₹53,250 crore of net debt and 1.2x net debt/EBITDA at 31 March 2025. Hindustan Zinc’s ₹10 FY2026 dividend and Vedanta’s ₹34 FY2025-26 interim dividend cannot be converted into a fair yield comparison without synchronized prices and periods. The better decision comes from a matched-data worksheet that combines yield, debt service, cash after capex, commodity concentration and the durability of operating margins.
