US toy prices climbed 6.6% in the year to September 2026 and 4.2% from August to September after seasonal adjustment, according to the latest consumer-inflation data reported by Reuters. Tariffs on imported toys are combining with higher oil, plastics, freight and shipping costs linked to the Iran conflict, making holiday shelves more expensive and keeping prices uneven across products.
How much have toy prices increased?
The September figures show both a substantial annual increase and an unusually sharp monthly move:

|---|---|---|
| Year over year | 6.6% | US toy prices, September 2026 versus September 2025; consumer-inflation data reported by Reuters |
| Month over month | 4.2% | August to September 2026, seasonally adjusted; consumer-inflation data reported by Reuters |
These are category-level inflation readings, not guaranteed changes for every item. A Barbie doll, Tonka truck or Care Bear can move by a different amount depending on its materials, factory, shipment timing, retailer and promotion.

China remains central to US toy supply
Most toys sold in the United States are manufactured in China. That concentration makes the category particularly sensitive to US-China tariff decisions. US tariffs on Chinese goods initially reached 145%, then fell to 30% in May 2025. A late-September US-China agreement covered $30 billion of goods in each direction, but those policy changes do not instantly reset the price of merchandise already in stores.

Retail prices reflect earlier import bills
Manufacturers and retailers often set wholesale and shelf prices before goods cross the ocean. Companies that bought or produced this season’s inventory when higher tariff rates applied had already absorbed those costs in their landed cost. Even if a lower tariff applies to later shipments, the older inventory can remain priced higher until it sells through. That is why tariff relief may take months to appear and may not reach every product at once.
How the Iran conflict adds a second cost shock
Toys are exposed to energy markets in several ways. Plastic components and packaging rely heavily on petroleum-based inputs. Higher crude-oil prices can raise resin and other material costs, while conflict-related disruption can increase fuel and ocean-shipping expenses. David Silverman, senior director at Fitch Ratings, said the tariff and energy pressures are “showing up in pricing” and that the Iran conflict’s effect on commodity and shipping costs will “certainly persist for the next several quarters.”

That combination matters even for a toy not made in a conflict region: the product may still use petrochemical plastics, travel by fuel-intensive freight and require energy at multiple manufacturing stages.
What toy companies are saying
Basic Fun
Basic Fun, maker of Tonka trucks and Care Bears, said tariffs add a noticeable cost to toys and other goods. CEO Jay Foreman said reducing tariffs should lower toy prices over time if other global pressures, including wars that raise fuel and raw-material costs, also subside.

Mattel
Mattel, which makes Barbie dolls, reported moderate inflationary pressure associated with events in the Middle East after tariff-related costs squeezed margins. CFO Paul Ruh’s comments indicate that companies may absorb part of the increase temporarily rather than pass every dollar directly to shoppers.
Hasbro
Hasbro CFO Gina Goetter said the company had absorbed higher input costs. Absorption can protect demand in the short run, but it can also limit margins and leave manufacturers more likely to adjust prices, product sizes or promotions later.

What shoppers should expect this holiday season
- Higher starting prices: The 6.6% annual category increase sets a higher baseline before holiday discounts.
- Uneven increases: Products with different factories, plastic content, freight routes and inventory dates will not move together.
- More promotions and trade-downs: Retailers may use temporary discounts, while families may choose smaller sets, older versions or less expensive brands if budgets tighten.
- Delayed benefits from lower tariffs: New shipments could eventually cost less, but existing inventory purchased under earlier rates may keep shelf prices elevated.
There is no reliable product-by-product forecast in the available data, so the September inflation rate should not be used to predict the exact holiday price of a specific Barbie, Tonka or Care Bears item.

Will toy prices fall if tariffs are reduced?
They could ease over time, but a reduction is not an immediate guarantee of lower checkout prices. The timing depends on when goods are produced under the new tariff rate, how quickly older inventory sells, whether oil and freight costs decline, and how much of the savings manufacturers and retailers pass through. If energy and shipping costs remain elevated, they can offset part of the tariff benefit.

How inflation is affecting household budgets
Toy inflation is arriving during a broader cost-of-living debate. In a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted through October 5, 2026, 21% approved and 67% disapproved of President Trump’s handling of cost-of-living issues. The poll does not measure toy prices directly, but it illustrates the political pressure created when everyday purchases become more expensive.
For holiday planning, compare the total delivered price rather than relying on the item’s usual suggested price, check several retailers, and decide in advance which features are essential. Because promotions and inventory timing can create large differences, waiting for a sale may help on some products, while limited-stock items may not receive a discount.
