A UPI PIN authorizes payments and bank transfers inside a UPI app on your registered phone. An ATM (debit-card) PIN authenticates transactions made with your physical debit card at an ATM or card terminal. The important exception is a UPI-enabled cardless ATM withdrawal: you scan the ATM’s one-time QR code in a UPI app and approve the withdrawal with your UPI PIN.
UPI PIN and ATM PIN at a glance
Both credentials prove that an account holder is authorizing a transaction, but they belong to different payment rails. Entering one in the wrong place will not substitute for the other. NPCI describes a UPI-PIN as a 4–6 digit passcode created during first registration with a UPI app and entered to authorize bank transactions. Your debit-card PIN is validated by the ATM or card network when you use the physical card.

It approves an action in the UPI app
When you send money, pay a merchant QR code or approve a collect request, the app displays an authorization screen. You select the linked bank account, check the payee and amount, and enter the UPI PIN. The app sends that authorization through the UPI system to your bank. A successful PIN check allows the bank to debit the selected account.
#1 Best Overall
The PIN is tied to the bank account registered in the UPI app, not merely to the handset or the app brand. If several accounts are linked, each account can have its own UPI PIN. Always confirm which account is selected before approving.
It is created during registration
During first-time setup, the UPI app verifies your mobile number and bank relationship, then asks you to create a 4–6 digit UPI PIN. NPCI’s wording is explicit: “UPI-PIN (UPI Personal Identification Number) is a 4-6 digit pass code you create/set during first time registration with this App. You have to enter this UPI-PIN to authorize all bank transactions.” The exact prompts and the debit-card information requested can vary by bank.
It is not a password for customer service
NPCI says not to share your UPI PIN with anyone and notes that customer support will not ask for it. A legitimate support agent, merchant or caller does not need to know the digits to issue a refund, solve a failed payment or help you install an app. A request to enter a PIN while receiving money is a warning sign: receiving a normal UPI payment does not require you to authorize a debit.

What an ATM PIN does
It authenticates the physical card
For a conventional ATM withdrawal, insert or tap your debit card, choose the transaction and enter the card PIN on the ATM keypad. The ATM routes the request through the card and bank networks, which validate the PIN before dispensing cash. The same credential may be requested at a point-of-sale terminal for a card transaction, depending on the card, terminal and transaction type.

Bank rules control the setup
The card-issuing bank decides how its PIN is issued, changed, unblocked or regenerated. Possible channels include the bank’s ATM, mobile or internet banking, a branch, or a customer-service process with additional verification. Do not assume that your bank’s card-PIN length, retry count or change procedure matches another bank’s. RBI guidance notes that ATM transaction flows differ by bank; an invalid PIN can cause the transaction to be declined.
Why an ATM can still ask for a PIN
If you inserted a physical debit card, the ATM is following the card transaction flow and will normally request the ATM PIN. The request does not mean your UPI PIN has been lost or that the ATM can use your UPI credentials. If you are using a cardless UPI-ATM feature instead, you should select the UPI cash-withdrawal option and follow the QR-code process described below; you do not insert a card.
When to enter each PIN
| Your action | Credential to use | Where authorization occurs |
|---|---|---|
| Scan a shop’s UPI QR code and pay | UPI PIN for the selected bank account | UPI app |
| Send a UPI transfer to a contact or bank account | UPI PIN | UPI app |
| Approve a collect request | UPI PIN, after checking the requester and amount | UPI app |
| Withdraw cash with a debit card | ATM/debit-card PIN | ATM keypad |
| Pay at a card terminal with the physical debit card | ATM/debit-card PIN when the terminal requests it | Card terminal |
| Withdraw cash without a card at a participating UPI-ATM | UPI PIN after scanning the ATM’s dynamic QR code | UPI app; the ATM supplies the cash |
Never type an ATM PIN into a UPI app or a UPI PIN into an ATM’s card-PIN prompt. A declined transaction after using the wrong credential is expected, not evidence that the account is blocked.
How a UPI-ATM withdrawal works
UPI-ATM is the notable exception to the usual separation. NPCI’s National Financial Switch description says the customer selects “UPI cash withdrawal” at a participating ATM, scans the QR code with any supported UPI app and authorizes with the UPI PIN on the mobile device. The physical debit card is not required.
Rank #3
- At a participating ATM, choose the option labelled UPI cash withdrawal or equivalent.
- Enter the requested cash amount. The ATM displays a one-time, dynamic QR code.
- Open your UPI app, scan that QR code and verify the ATM, amount and account shown in the app.
- Approve the request with the UPI PIN for the selected bank account.
- Collect the cash and receipt, then check the transaction status in the app and bank account.
NPCI lists a UPI-ATM transaction limit of up to ₹10,000 per transaction, subject to your existing UPI daily limit and the limits imposed by the issuer bank and the ATM operator. The ₹10,000 figure is not a guarantee that every ATM, bank or account will permit that amount.
If the QR code or cash outcome is unclear
Do not scan a QR code shown on a poster, sticker or another person’s phone. It should be generated by the ATM for that withdrawal and should be treated as single-use. If your account is debited but cash is not dispensed, save the ATM location, time, amount and transaction reference, and report the failed cash withdrawal through your bank’s official channel. Do not repeat the withdrawal until you know whether the first request is pending or reversed.
How to set or reset a UPI PIN
The labels differ among apps, but the path is usually within the bank-account management screen. You will commonly need the debit card linked to that account and access to the bank-registered mobile number for OTP verification.
- Open the official UPI app and unlock it using your device security or app passcode.
- Open Bank account, Linked accounts or the equivalent menu.
- Select the bank account whose UPI PIN is forgotten or needs changing.
- Choose Reset UPI PIN, Change UPI PIN or the matching option.
- Enter the requested debit-card details. Banks commonly ask for information such as the last digits and expiry date, but the exact fields are bank-specific.
- Request and enter the OTP delivered through the bank’s registered channel.
- Create a new 4–6 digit UPI PIN, re-enter it, and submit.
- Make a small test payment only after the app confirms that the new PIN is active.
Use only the app installed from an official app store or your bank’s official website. If the reset option is unavailable, the card is expired or blocked, the mobile number is not registered, or the OTP does not arrive, contact the bank through a verified number or branch. Do not disclose the OTP or PIN to the person helping you.

What happens after wrong attempts
Repeated incorrect UPI-PIN entries can temporarily block UPI sending, depending on the bank. Stop guessing when a PIN fails. Wait for the bank’s stated cooling-off period or use the reset flow. A wrong ATM PIN can similarly trigger a card or ATM security block under the card issuer’s rules; the bank, not the UPI app, must resolve that condition.
How to change or recover an ATM PIN
There is no single India-wide procedure. Look for Change PIN, Generate PIN or Forgot PIN in your card issuer’s official ATM or banking app. Some banks require the physical card and an OTP; others provide a temporary PIN that must be changed at an ATM. Follow the issuer’s instructions and keep the card-PIN process separate from UPI registration. If the card is retained by an ATM, contact the bank immediately and do not accept help from strangers at the machine.
Security rules that apply to both credentials
- Memorize each PIN instead of writing it on the card, phone case or wallet.
- Never share a PIN with a caller, merchant, delivery agent, friend, bank employee or supposed technical-support representative. NPCI specifically says customer support will not ask for the UPI PIN.
- Check the payee name, account and amount before approving a UPI request. A QR code is generally for making a payment, not for receiving one.
- At an ATM, cover the keypad with your free hand, inspect the card slot and keypad for loose or unusual parts, and cancel the transaction if the machine looks tampered with.
- Use the bank’s official app and keep your phone’s operating system, screen lock and app updates current.
- Turn on transaction alerts. If you see a debit you did not authorize, immediately contact the bank through the number on its official website or card, block the relevant instrument and report the transaction.
Limits, declines and other common problems
“Can I use my ATM PIN for UPI?”
No. A normal UPI payment requires the UPI PIN associated with the selected bank account. Your ATM PIN will not authorize it. During initial UPI setup or a reset, the app may ask for debit-card details as an identity check; that does not turn the card PIN into the UPI PIN.

Any UPI app needs the UPI PIN for the bank account you selected. The app brand does not change the credential. If you link accounts from different banks, select the correct account and use that account’s UPI PIN.

“My UPI payment is declined.”
Check whether you entered the correct UPI PIN, whether the selected account has sufficient funds, and whether the bank or UPI service is experiencing an outage. A PIN error, an account-specific limit, a temporary bank block or a recipient-bank problem can all produce a decline. Do not keep retrying an unknown PIN because repeated failures may trigger a temporary block.
“My ATM withdrawal was declined.”
Confirm that the physical card is active, the card PIN is correct, the account has available funds and the requested amount is within the bank’s ATM limits. RBI notes that validation flows differ by bank. If the ATM retained the card or your account was debited without cash, record the details and report it to the issuing bank.
“What is the normal UPI transfer limit?”
NPCI’s UPI FAQ lists up to ₹1 lakh per transaction for a normal UPI transfer. The page does not state a publication year, and the effective ceiling can be lower because of the bank, transaction category, account type or current NPCI rules. Check the limit displayed by your bank before relying on the maximum.

A practical decision checklist
- Is a physical debit card being inserted, tapped or swiped? Use the ATM/debit-card PIN if the terminal requests one.
- Are you inside a UPI app approving a payment, transfer or collect request? Use the UPI PIN for the selected account.
- Is an ATM displaying a UPI cash-withdrawal option and a fresh QR code? Scan it in the UPI app and authorize with the UPI PIN; no card PIN is used for that flow.
- Are you being asked for a PIN by a caller or someone offering a refund? Stop. Do not disclose either PIN and contact the bank through an official channel.
- Have you forgotten the UPI PIN? Use the app’s Bank account section and Reset UPI PIN flow with the linked debit card and OTP instead of guessing.
Keeping the two credentials distinct prevents most avoidable declines and protects both your mobile payments and your card transactions. The one deliberate crossover is UPI-ATM, where the app—not the physical card—performs the authorization.
