If you sent a completed UPI payment to the wrong person, report it immediately in the UPI app and to the bank account that was debited. Have the transaction date, amount, recipient details, UPI reference (or RRN), screenshots and any complaint number ready. A card chargeback is a different, card-issuer process and does not automatically apply to UPI.
UPI operating rules do use the word “chargeback” for bank-to-bank adjustments. That institutional process is not a guarantee that a customer can reverse an authorized transfer to a mistaken recipient. Whether money can be recovered depends on the transaction status, the banks involved and their investigation.

Start by identifying the payment rail and status
The right complaint route depends on how the payment was made. UPI, debit cards and credit cards use separate operating systems, participants and dispute rules. Before choosing a remedy, open the transaction details and confirm all of the following:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Rail: UPI, debit card or credit card.
- Status: completed, failed, pending, reversed or declined.
- Authorization: whether you entered your UPI PIN or otherwise approved the payment.
- Recipient: whether the money went to an unintended but identifiable person, or the transaction is completely unfamiliar.
A completed, authorized transfer to the wrong UPI ID is materially different from a failed debit, a delayed transaction or an unauthorized payment. Do not describe every problem as a “chargeback”; using the wrong term can send you to the wrong team and delay reporting.

Completed UPI payment to the wrong person: what to do now
NPCI’s consumer FAQ states: “No, once the payment is initiated, it cannot be stopped.” That means there is no cancel button that reliably halts an initiated UPI transfer. You should still report the mistake at once because prompt notice gives the remitting bank and beneficiary bank the best chance to investigate and seek cooperation.
1. Capture the transaction record
Open the payment in the UPI app and save a screenshot or PDF of the details. Record the date and time, amount, recipient name and UPI ID or other payee identifier, transaction status, and the UPI reference number or RRN. Keep the debit alert from your bank and any message showing the recipient account.
2. Use the app’s help or report-issue flow
Open the specific transaction rather than submitting a generic support request. Select the closest option for an incorrect recipient, payment dispute or money sent to the wrong UPI ID. Describe that the payment was authorized by you but intended for someone else. Save the complaint or ticket number and the confirmation screen.
NPCI’s FAQ says customers can raise a grievance or check a UPI transaction’s status through the UPI app of a participating bank. The labels differ by app, so follow the transaction-level support path shown by your provider.
3. Contact the bank that debited your account
Call or message the bank holding the payer account through an official channel, and also use its written complaint route if available. Provide the reference number, date, amount, payee information and the app ticket number. Ask the bank to register the matter as a mistaken-recipient UPI transfer and to tell you how it will coordinate with the beneficiary bank.
Request a complaint or service-reference number. A telephone conversation without a recorded reference is difficult to track, so keep the time, channel, representative’s name and every written reply.
4. Preserve evidence and monitor the case
Keep app screenshots, bank alerts, emails, chat transcripts and the original payment confirmation in one folder. Check the transaction status in the app and respond quickly if the bank requests a declaration or additional information. Do not delete the payment record while a complaint is open.
5. Do not disclose credentials
No bank or recovery agent needs your UPI PIN or one-time password to receive a refund. NPCI’s FAQ warns that the UPI PIN authorizes transactions. Never enter it to “accept” money, and never share an OTP, card PIN, password or screen-sharing code with someone claiming they can recover the transfer.

What information should your complaint contain?
A clear chronology helps the bank distinguish a typing error from fraud or a technical failure. State when you initiated the payment, which UPI ID or QR code you selected, what you intended to pay, what actually appeared on the confirmation screen, and when you noticed the mistake. Include the exact amount and reference number rather than a rounded figure. If you contacted the recipient, preserve that correspondence, but do not delay the bank report while waiting for a reply.
Explain plainly that you approved the transaction with your PIN but selected the wrong recipient. That wording matters: claiming that a transaction was unauthorized when you know you approved it can send the case into the wrong investigation track. Conversely, if you genuinely do not recognize the payment, say so and use the bank’s urgent fraud channel instead of calling it a simple typo.
What happens after the bank receives a mistaken-recipient report?
The remitting bank can review its own debit record and coordinate with the beneficiary bank. The beneficiary bank may verify whether its customer’s account was credited and seek that customer’s cooperation for a return. The receiving customer’s consent may be necessary for a voluntary reversal in an authorized-payment case, so the process is not equivalent to automatically voiding a card transaction.
Ask the bank what status it has recorded, whether a request has been sent to the beneficiary bank and when you should expect the next update. Bank-specific turnaround times and forms differ, and no universal recovery period is established here. Keep checking your account ledger: a verbal statement that money was reversed should be confirmed by an actual credit and matching transaction status.
What “UPI chargeback” means—and what it does not mean
In UPI operating rules, chargeback refers to an adjustment process between member institutions. The remitting bank can raise a dispute toward the beneficiary bank under the applicable reason codes and transaction records. Banks review credit confirmations, returns and other evidence before deciding how to handle the adjustment.
NPCI’s February 2025 circular changed chargeback processing around transaction-credit confirmations and returns, with the changes effective February 15, 2025. A June 2025 addendum described a “Remitting bank raising good faith negative chargeback” (RGNB) option for specified disputes after ordinary chargebacks are declined under stated reason codes; NPCI gave July 15, 2025 as the implementation date.
Those circulars are instructions for participating banks and institutions. They do not create a consumer promise that an authorized transfer to a mistaken recipient will be reversed. Your practical route remains the UPI app and the bank that debited your account. The bank decides how to raise and process any institutional adjustment.

Choose the correct path for your transaction type
| Situation | First action | What to understand |
|---|---|---|
| Completed UPI payment sent to the wrong person | Report the transaction in the UPI app and contact the remitting bank immediately. Keep the UPI reference and complaint record. | The payment cannot be stopped after initiation, and recovery is not guaranteed. |
| UPI debit marked failed | Check the app and bank status, then contact the bank if the expected reversal does not arrive. | This is a failed-debit and reversal issue, not a mistaken-recipient payment. |
| UPI transaction pending | Check both app and bank status and allow time for beneficiary-bank processing; contact the bank if it remains unresolved. | A pending status does not prove that the beneficiary permanently received the money. |
| Suspected unauthorized or fraudulent UPI transaction | Contact the bank immediately and use the app or bank’s fraud-reporting route. | Do not wait for a generic wrong-recipient workflow. Speed matters for a possible fraud claim. |
| Card purchase or other card transaction | Contact the card issuer and follow its card-dispute process. | UPI terminology does not turn a UPI payment into a card transaction. |
How to raise and track a UPI complaint
NPCI provides a complaint-routing facility for UPI transactions. Its portal can forward a complaint to the relevant participating member, but NPCI describes the member bank or institution as responsible for resolving the complaint. In practice, that means the bank that debited your account remains your main point of contact even if you also use NPCI’s portal.

- Assemble the facts: reference or RRN, date, amount, payee identifier, status, payer account and a concise description of what went wrong.
- File in the app: open the transaction and use the report, help or grievance option.
- File with the bank: submit the same facts through the bank’s official helpline, branch, email or digital complaint channel.
- Record the acknowledgment: save the app ticket, bank complaint number and submission date.
- Answer follow-ups: provide documents requested by the bank and keep copies of your responses.
- Escalate only after using the bank’s process: if the response is inadequate or the case is not handled, review the current RBI Ombudsman eligibility before filing.
Bank screens, internal turnaround times and the documents requested can vary. No source establishes a universal recovery period or a guaranteed refund for a mistaken UPI transfer.
Questions to ask the bank during follow-up
- Has the transaction been confirmed as completed, pending, failed or reversed in the bank’s system?
- Was a request sent to the beneficiary bank, and under what complaint or reference number?
- Does the bank need a signed declaration, identity document or additional screenshot?
- What is the next escalation channel if the first team cannot resolve the case?
- When will the bank provide a written final response?
Keep the answers with your original ticket. If a representative gives only a verbal assurance, request the same information through the bank’s secure message, email or other recorded channel. Do not repeatedly create new tickets for the same transaction unless the bank instructs you to do so; duplicate complaints can make the chronology harder to follow.
When a card chargeback actually applies
A chargeback is relevant when the disputed transaction was made on a debit or credit card and the card issuer’s rules provide a dispute category. Start with the issuer, not with the UPI app or an NPCI complaint. Tell the issuer whether the issue is an unauthorized card transaction, a merchant dispute, a processing error or another category recognized by its card-dispute procedure.

The issuer may request transaction details, correspondence with the merchant, delivery or cancellation records and a written statement. Network deadlines and evidence requirements depend on the issuer, card network and facts. The RBI material supports the issuer-first route and Ombudsman escalation; it does not establish one universal deadline or guarantee that a card chargeback will succeed.
RBI’s card FAQ says a customer may approach the RBI Ombudsman when the issuer has not responded within 30 days, has rejected the complaint wholly or partly, or the customer is dissatisfied with the response or resolution. That 30-day period is an escalation threshold for the card complaint, not a promise of a refund and not a rule for every UPI mistake.
UPI dispute and card chargeback compared
| Question | UPI transfer | Card transaction |
|---|---|---|
| Where do you complain first? | The UPI app’s transaction-help route and the bank that debited the payer account. | The card issuer that issued the debit or credit card. |
| Who operates the underlying adjustment? | Participating banks and institutions, with NPCI facilitating the UPI framework and complaint routing. | The issuer applies its card-dispute process under relevant network and issuer rules. |
| Does “chargeback” mean the same thing? | It can describe an institutional NPCI process between member banks; it is not an automatic customer reversal right. | It is a customer-facing dispute route handled through the issuer for eligible card transactions. |
| What if you authorized the payment but chose the wrong recipient? | Report immediately as a mistaken-recipient transfer; recovery is investigated and not guaranteed. | That fact pattern is not a UPI case; discuss the card transaction’s actual dispute reason with the issuer. |
| What if you did not authorize it? | Use the bank’s fraud or unauthorized-transaction route immediately. | Use the issuer’s unauthorized-transaction process immediately. |
Escalating an unresolved complaint to RBI
The Reserve Bank – Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026 is the current scheme identified by RBI and took effect on July 1, 2026. RBI says complaints can be filed online through its Complaint Management System (CMS), by email or in physical mode. Check the current scheme text and RBI instructions before filing because eligibility, exclusions, required prior contact with the regulated entity and filing timelines can change.
For a UPI matter, first retain proof that you complained to the relevant bank or institution. An Ombudsman complaint is an escalation of the bank’s service or response; it is not a substitute for promptly reporting a potentially fraudulent or mistaken transfer. If the transaction is unauthorized, report it to the bank’s fraud channel immediately even while considering later escalation.

Those conditions concern the issuer’s complaint handling. They do not convert a UPI transfer into a card dispute.

Common mistakes that weaken a complaint
- Waiting for the recipient to respond: contact the bank first; any voluntary return by the recipient is separate from the formal complaint.
- Calling it a card chargeback: describe the actual UPI transaction and status so the issue reaches the correct team.
- Omitting the reference number: a bank needs the transaction identifier to locate the payment quickly.
- Confusing pending with completed: verify the status in both the app and bank records before alleging that funds were finally credited.
- Using a generic fraud route for an authorized typo: explain that you approved the payment but selected the wrong recipient; reserve the fraud route for an unfamiliar or unauthorized transaction.
- Sharing a PIN or OTP: legitimate support does not require credentials that authorize or authenticate a payment.
- Assuming NPCI itself will refund you: NPCI facilitates routing, while the member institution is responsible for resolving the complaint.
- Opening multiple contradictory cases: keep one accurate timeline and add documents to the existing complaint where possible.
A practical decision checklist
- Was the payment made by UPI? If not, use the card issuer’s process for a card transaction.
- Is the UPI transaction completed and authorized but addressed to the wrong person? Report in the app and to the remitting bank immediately.
- Is it failed or pending? Follow the status and reversal path instead of describing it as a mistaken-recipient transfer.
- Is it unfamiliar or fraudulent? Use the bank’s urgent fraud-reporting route.
- Have you saved the RRN, date, amount, payee identifier, screenshots and complaint number?
- Has the bank given a final response or failed to handle the complaint? Check the RBI Ombudsman Scheme currently in force and its filing requirements.
What to expect after you report a mistaken UPI transfer
The bank may contact the beneficiary bank, verify whether the beneficiary account was credited and ask for a written declaration or supporting records. The recipient’s bank may need the account holder’s cooperation before a voluntary return. Because the payment was authorized, the investigation is not the same as an unauthorized-transaction claim, and filing a complaint does not establish that the funds will be recovered.
Keep monitoring the ticket until the bank records a final outcome. If the bank says the payment failed or was reversed, compare that statement with your account ledger and transaction status. If it says the beneficiary was credited, ask for the complaint outcome and the next escalation channel in writing.
Frequently asked questions
Can I stop a UPI payment after sending it?
No. NPCI’s FAQ says that once a payment is initiated, it cannot be stopped. Report a mistaken transfer immediately anyway; the bank may investigate and seek a return.
Where do I register a complaint about a UPI transaction?
Use the transaction’s help or grievance option in the UPI app and contact the bank that debited your account. NPCI’s portal can facilitate routing to the relevant member, while the member institution is responsible for resolution.
Is a UPI chargeback the same as a credit-card chargeback?
No. UPI chargeback language describes an institutional process among participating banks. A card chargeback is an issuer-led dispute route for an eligible card transaction.
I entered my PIN but chose the wrong UPI ID. Should I report fraud?
Describe it as an authorized payment sent to the wrong recipient. Use the fraud route only when you genuinely did not authorize or recognize the transaction.
What if the UPI transaction says failed but my account was debited?
Check the app and bank status and allow the applicable reversal process. Contact the bank if the expected reversal does not appear. This is a failed-debit issue, not proof that the wrong recipient received funds.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat if the transaction is pending?
A pending status does not establish permanent receipt by the beneficiary. Check both systems, allow beneficiary-bank processing time and contact the bank if the status remains unresolved.

Will NPCI refund the money directly?
NPCI facilitates the framework and complaint routing. The relevant member bank or institution is responsible for resolving the complaint, and recovery is not guaranteed.
When can I approach the RBI Ombudsman?
Check the Reserve Bank – Integrated Ombudsman Scheme currently in force and its eligibility rules after first complaining to the bank or issuer. For card complaints, RBI’s FAQ identifies no response within 30 days, rejection wholly or partly, or dissatisfaction with the response or resolution as escalation conditions. The 2026 scheme took effect July 1, 2026.
Do I have to pay for a UPI complaint or buy a product to recover the money?
The relevant actions use your existing UPI app, bank channels, NPCI complaint facility and, where eligible, RBI channels. Be wary of anyone demanding credentials or promising recovery for a fee while posing as support.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: A completed UPI payment sent to the wrong person is handled through the UPI app and the bank that debited your account, not through a card chargeback. Report it immediately with the RRN, date, amount and recipient details, protect your PIN and OTP, and keep the complaint record. UPI’s bank-side chargeback procedures do not guarantee reversal. For a genuine card transaction, start with the card issuer; if the bank or issuer does not resolve the matter, check the RBI Ombudsman Scheme currently in force.
