For most hotel checkouts in India, use UPI when the property accepts it, your app and bank account are available, and the payment shows as successful. Keep a debit card ready as an electronic backup. Treat cash as a fallback for properties or situations where digital payment cannot be completed, and take extra care with large cash receipts because section 269ST of the Income-tax Act restricts certain cash payments of ₹2 lakh or more.
There is no method that wins for every hotel or guest. The right choice depends on the property’s accepted methods, your connectivity and account or card access, the exact amount displayed, the payment’s confirmed status, and whether the cash threshold is relevant. Confirm the hotel’s policy before checkout and retain both the hotel receipt and your payment confirmation.

The short answer: choose in this order
Use this sequence at checkout rather than assuming one method is universally best:
- Try UPI if the hotel accepts it and you can complete the payment in your app. Wait for a clear success or credited confirmation.
- Switch to a debit card if UPI is unavailable, connectivity is unreliable, your app or bank account is inaccessible, or the hotel prefers card payment.
- Use cash only when it is accepted and practical. It can work without an app or functioning digital connection, but a cash receipt of ₹2 lakh or more can fall within section 269ST restrictions.
This is a practical order, not a claim that UPI has the lowest risk, fastest reversal, best rewards, or universal acceptance. The available evidence does not establish those rankings for hotel payments.
#1 Best Overall
UPI, debit card and cash compared
| Method | Best use | What it can offer | What you must check |
|---|---|---|---|
| UPI | A convenient electronic payment when the hotel accepts it | UPI is one of the payment modes identified in the Reserve Bank of India’s bill-payment framework. The Ministry of Finance said on 8 August 2026 that consumers making UPI payments will not face transaction charges. | Whether this hotel accepts the particular UPI route; connectivity; access to the correct app and bank account; the amount shown before authorization; and a successful, credited status after payment. Limits can vary by bank, app and instrument. |
| Debit card | An electronic alternative when UPI is unavailable or you prefer a card terminal | The Income Tax Department lists debit card and UPI among prescribed electronic modes for the statutory provisions addressed in its FAQ. | Whether the property accepts your card network and terminal; the terminal amount; your bank’s authorization requirements; and the receipt. Do not assume a fee, reward, chargeback outcome or acceptance policy without checking. |
| Cash | A fallback when digital payment cannot be completed or the property accepts only cash | It does not require an app, bank login or functioning digital connection. | Whether the hotel accepts cash, whether you can obtain a detailed receipt, and whether the amount and circumstances approach the section 269ST threshold. Splitting a bill does not automatically remove the rule. |
Five questions that determine the best method
1. Does this property accept the method?
Acceptance is property-specific. RBI directions that took effect on 1 April 2024 identify UPI, internet banking, cards, cash and prepaid instruments within the Bharat Bill Payment System framework, but they do not mean every hotel must accept every one of those methods. Ask the front desk or booking contact which options are available for your room, taxes, deposits, restaurant charges and any other amount being settled together.
Ask a second question if the hotel displays a QR code or card terminal: is it the hotel’s own payment account or a third-party collection path, and what name and amount should appear before you approve? This helps you compare the payment screen with the final folio.
2. Can you complete the transaction at checkout?
UPI requires access to the relevant app and bank account, a usable connection and the ability to authenticate. A debit card requires the physical card or an enabled card path, a working terminal and any bank authentication the transaction requests. Cash requires enough notes or another accepted form of physical payment and a hotel employee able to issue a receipt.

3. What total is actually displayed?
Compare the payment amount with the hotel’s final folio before authorizing. Include the room balance, taxes, deposits, extensions, food or other posted charges, and any adjustment the hotel has explained. For UPI, review the amount in the app or QR-payment screen. For a debit card, inspect the terminal total before entering a PIN or otherwise approving. For cash, count the amount with the staff member and request a receipt showing what it covers.
The Ministry of Finance’s 8 August 2026 statement concerns UPI user transaction charges. It separately discusses the possibility of a limited merchant MDR above a threshold at a nominal rate. That distinction does not establish a particular hotel’s checkout policy or prove that every displayed total will be identical, so rely on the amount shown by the hotel and payment screen.
4. Has the payment really been confirmed?
A QR scan, a card insertion or a bank notification is not by itself proof that the hotel’s account has been credited. Look for a successful or completed status, match the amount and reference details, and ask the hotel to confirm receipt in its system. Preserve the confirmation even if the front desk says the folio is closed.
5. Does the amount create a cash-law issue?
Section 269ST generally prohibits a person from receiving cash of ₹2 lakh or more from one person:
Rank #3
- in aggregate in a day;
- for a single transaction; or
- for transactions relating to one event or occasion.
The rule has statutory exceptions and applies to specified cash receipts, so it is not accurate to say that every hotel bill above ₹2 lakh is automatically illegal in cash. It is equally unsafe to assume that dividing one stay into several invoices avoids the restriction: the single-transaction and one-event provisions can still matter. For a high-value stay, ask the hotel for an electronic payment option and obtain advice appropriate to the facts if the property proposes a cash arrangement.
How to pay a hotel bill with UPI
Before you scan or approve
- Confirm that the hotel accepts UPI for the specific balance you are paying.
- Ask the staff to state the final amount and, if relevant, the merchant name expected on the payment screen.
- Ensure your phone can connect and that the correct UPI app and bank account are available.
- Check your bank or app’s current transaction limits. The applicable limit can vary by bank, app and instrument; no universal limit is established here.
At the payment screen
- Open your authorized UPI app and scan the hotel’s QR code, use the hotel’s supplied UPI address, or follow the property’s approved payment flow.
- Check the payee identity and amount before entering your UPI PIN. If either is wrong, stop and ask the hotel to issue a corrected request.
- Authorize the payment and wait for the app to show a completed or successful result. Do not close the app merely because the phone displays a notification.
- Show or report the transaction reference to the front desk and wait for the hotel to confirm that its system reflects the payment.
- Save the app confirmation and collect the hotel receipt or closed folio.
What the 8 August 2026 government statement means
A Ministry of Finance statement published by the Press Information Bureau on 8 August 2026 says: “Consumers making payments will not face any transaction charges.” In context, that statement addresses consumers making UPI payments. It separately describes a possible, limited merchant MDR above a threshold at a nominal rate. Merchant MDR is a charge arrangement involving the merchant and payment ecosystem; it is not the same thing as a fee automatically payable by the consumer.
Therefore, do not add an assumed UPI fee to your calculation, and do not assume the statement tells you whether a particular hotel accepts UPI or has an applicable checkout charge. Read the amount shown by the property and the payment screen, and ask before approving anything that does not match the agreed folio.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen a UPI payment appears stuck or failed
- Pending: Do not immediately pay again. Note the transaction reference, ask the hotel to check whether it received the credit, and check your bank or app status.
- Failed or declined: Verify the amount and payee, then try the hotel’s approved alternate UPI path or use your debit card if available.
- Debited but the hotel cannot see it: Keep the debit confirmation and reference, ask the hotel to reconcile it, and avoid a second payment until you understand whether the first transaction will complete or reverse.
- QR code does not identify the expected payee: Stop and have the hotel generate a new request or provide its verified payment details.
How to pay with a debit card
Why it is the practical electronic backup
A debit card can be useful when the hotel accepts cards but the UPI route is unavailable, your phone or bank app cannot be used, or you prefer to authorize through a terminal. The Income Tax Department’s FAQ includes debit card and UPI among prescribed electronic modes for the provisions it addresses. That listing does not promise that every hotel accepts every card, nor does it establish a particular bank’s fees, rewards or dispute process.
Rank #4
Card-payment steps
- Ask the hotel whether it accepts your debit-card network and whether the terminal will charge the room folio, a deposit or another amount.
- Have staff display the final total on the terminal before you authorize.
- Follow the terminal’s instructions, including PIN or other bank authentication where requested. Keep the card in your possession and do not authorize an amount you have not reviewed.
- Wait for an approved result. If the terminal times out, ask whether the bank shows a debit before trying again.
- Collect the terminal slip or digital confirmation and the hotel’s itemized receipt. Compare the two amounts.
Card-specific checks
- Confirm that the card has sufficient available balance and is enabled for the transaction type.
- Ask whether the hotel is taking a temporary deposit or settling the final bill; these are different amounts and should be documented.
- Do not assume that a debit card has the same limits as a credit card used through UPI.
Do not confuse debit cards with RuPay credit cards on UPI
A National Payments Corporation of India circular dated 16 November 2023 set a ceiling for linked RuPay credit-card transactions on UPI at the lowest of the issuer’s credit limit, issuer risk limit and customer-set limit. That rule concerns credit-card transactions linked to UPI. It is not a debit-card limit and should not be applied to all UPI payments. If you intend to pay with a credit card through UPI, check the issuer and app terms for that instrument separately.

When cash can be useful
Cash can settle a bill when the property accepts it and you lack app access, a usable connection or a functioning electronic payment route. It can also serve as a backup while a digital outage is being resolved. Ask for an itemized receipt that identifies the hotel, date, amount, taxes or other components, and the balance marked paid.
Apply the ₹2 lakh section 269ST rule precisely
Under section 269ST, a person generally may not receive cash of ₹2 lakh or more from one person in aggregate in a day, for a single transaction, or for transactions relating to one event or occasion, subject to statutory exceptions. In a hotel context, the relevant question is not merely whether one invoice is below ₹2 lakh. A series of cash receipts connected to the same stay or occasion may still require careful treatment.
The rule concerns cash receipts and does not make electronic payments unlawful at the same amount. It also does not eliminate the need to check the facts and exceptions. If a hotel proposes taking a large cash amount, ask why that method is available, request an electronic alternative, and obtain professional tax advice when the circumstances are unclear.

Why splitting the bill is not a dependable workaround
Creating several receipts or paying on separate days does not automatically change the nature of a single transaction or one event. Section 269ST expressly includes those circumstances in addition to the daily aggregate test. Do not ask staff to divide a genuine hotel liability merely to stay below a number on an individual receipt.
Decision guide for common checkout situations
| Your situation | Practical first choice | Backup and caution |
|---|---|---|
| The hotel accepts UPI, your app and account work, and the connection is stable. | UPI, after matching the payee and amount. | Keep a debit card available in case the transaction remains pending or the hotel cannot confirm it. |
| The hotel accepts cards but has no usable UPI route. | Debit card after checking the terminal amount. | Do not retry blindly after a timeout; establish whether the first attempt was debited. |
| Your phone, app or bank account is inaccessible, but the hotel accepts cash. | Cash for an amount that does not create an unresolved section 269ST issue. | Obtain a detailed receipt and ask whether another electronic option is available. |
| The bill is ₹2 lakh or more and the hotel suggests cash. | An electronic method accepted by the property, if available. | Section 269ST has multiple triggering circumstances and exceptions. Do not assume invoice splitting solves the issue. |
| A UPI payment is debited but not confirmed by the hotel. | Pause and reconcile the first transaction. | Use the reference number and bank status before authorizing a second payment. |
| You are offered a QR code whose payee name does not match the hotel. | Stop and request verified payment details. | Do not approve based only on a printed QR code or verbal assurance. |
A checkout checklist that works for any method
- Ask first: Confirm whether the property accepts UPI, your debit card and cash, and whether any deposit or separate charge is being collected.
- Reconcile the folio: Review the room, taxes, extensions and additional charges. Ask for corrections before payment.
- Check the displayed amount: Match the hotel folio to the UPI screen, card terminal or cash count.
- Authorize once: Do not repeat a payment while the first attempt is pending or a terminal has timed out.
- Wait for confirmation: Obtain both the payment result and the hotel’s acknowledgement that the balance is settled.
- Keep records: Save the hotel receipt, itemized folio, digital reference or card slip, and any message about a reversal or adjustment.
- Review later: Check your bank account or statement for the same amount and report any mismatch promptly to the hotel and payment provider.
Limits of what can be ranked confidently
Official material identifies payment modes and sets out relevant legal or system rules, but it does not provide a hotel-specific survey of acceptance, failed-payment rates, fraud liability, reversal speed, rewards or total cost. Those outcomes can depend on the individual hotel, payment provider, issuing bank, account, card network and transaction path. A responsible comparison therefore focuses on whether you can complete and verify the payment, not on an unsupported claim that one method is always safer or cheaper.
For an India-focused hotel bill, the defensible conclusion is conditional: UPI is usually the most convenient first attempt when accepted and confirmed; debit card is the sensible electronic fallback; and cash is a useful backup only when accepted, receipted and compatible with the circumstances of section 269ST.
