The January 6, 2023 Reddit post titled “Updated list of total monthly Microsoft Rewards Points available as of January 2023 (~27,000 per month)” should be treated as a historical community estimate—not as a Microsoft-published monthly limit.
The post attempted to add together searches, daily activities, monthly bonuses, Xbox opportunities, and other offers available to a U.S. user at that time. Microsoft Rewards has since changed its earning rules, point values, offers, and regional availability. A later edit to the same thread calculated 17,482 points for a U.S. user in November 2024, which illustrates why a fixed “27,000 points every month” figure is not dependable for budgeting.
What the January 2023 Reddit estimate actually meant
The approximately 27,000-point figure was a user-calculated total based on the offers visible when the post was written. It was not an official monthly allowance, a guaranteed payout, or a worldwide maximum.
That distinction matters because Microsoft Rewards is account- and region-specific. Microsoft says earning opportunities, daily limits, terms, and available offers can vary by country, region, account, level, and current promotion. Activities such as quizzes, trivia, Xbox quests, and limited-time offers can also be changed or removed.

The post is useful as a snapshot of what an active U.S. Rewards account could potentially earn in early 2023. It is not a current rate card.
There is no universal monthly maximum
Microsoft does not publish one account-independent monthly ceiling covering every Rewards activity. Instead, some activities have daily or monthly limits while others depend on eligibility, engagement, purchases, membership tier, or temporary availability.
For a current estimate, sign in to Microsoft Rewards and check the live account pages:
- Open the Dashboard.
- Select Earn to see the activities currently available to your account.
- Review the points breakdown and progress shown on the dashboard.
- Open Redeem to see the rewards and redemption prices currently offered in your market.
- Use Order history to verify completed redemptions.
The Earn page is more reliable than an old spreadsheet or Reddit total because Microsoft can change both the activities and their point values.
Current search points: the predictable part
Microsoft’s current About page lists these qualifying search limits:

| Level | Qualifying searches per day | Points per search | Maximum per day | Approximate 30-day total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Member | Up to 5 | 5 | 25 | 750 |
| Silver | Up to 10 | 5 | 50 | 1,500 |
| Gold | Up to 20 | 5 | 100 | 3,000 |
For a 31-day month, the corresponding arithmetic totals are 775, 1,550, and 3,100 points. These are calculations from the listed daily caps, not promises that every search will qualify.
PC and mobile searches share the same account-level daily limit. Using two devices does not create two separate full allowances. Microsoft can also temporarily restrict search earning if searches appear artificial, unusually rapid, or inconsistent with its rules.
Current monthly bonuses
Microsoft currently lists three monthly bonus categories:

| Gold | 350 | Up to 3,500 | 700 | 4,550 |
The Bing Star amount is not a guaranteed fixed payment. Microsoft describes it as dependent on engagement and a behavioral score intended to reward genuine, organic usage.
The Default Search Bonus requires searches from a PC’s Bing search box or browser address bar while Bing is set as the default search engine. Microsoft says the searches must occur on at least 14 days during the calendar month. The bonus is awarded at the beginning of the following month.

Monthly bonuses appear in the Ready to claim area at the top right of the Rewards site. The monthly tier bonus generally becomes available within the first five days of the next month. Claimable bonuses generally expire after about 30 days, so an earned bonus is not necessarily safe to leave unclaimed indefinitely.
Why the 27,000-point calculation became outdated
Several moving parts make a historical monthly total unreliable:
- Daily search caps change. The current account level may not have the same limits used in January 2023.
- Point values change. A quiz, activity, purchase, or quest can pay more or less than it did previously.
- Offers are regional. A U.S. offer may not appear in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, or another market.
- Some offers are temporary. Promotions and limited-time activities can disappear without becoming permanent replacements.
- Xbox earning is separate and tier-dependent. Current Xbox information includes daily, weekly, monthly, and limited-time quests. Game Pass Premium and Ultimate members can receive exclusive quests and higher multipliers.
- Eligibility differs by account. A purchase offer, mobile activity, or quest may be visible to one account and unavailable to another.
Microsoft’s current Xbox information also gives annual gameplay earning values by Game Pass tier: $20 for Member, $25 for Essential, $50 for Premium, and $100 for Ultimate. Those figures are separate from Bing searches, Microsoft Store purchases, and other Rewards activity; they should not be added to the January 2023 Reddit estimate without checking the applicable terms.
How to estimate your own monthly total
For personal-finance purposes, treat Microsoft Rewards as variable savings rather than predictable income. A reasonable estimate should use only offers you can currently see and should separate repeatable points from promotional points.
- Record the search cap. Multiply your account’s daily qualifying-search limit by the number of days in the month.
- Add monthly bonuses conservatively. Include only bonuses whose requirements you can meet. Do not automatically count a maximum Bing Star amount.
- List recurring activities. Add Daily Set items, quizzes, and other activities that appear consistently on your Earn page.
- Separate variable offers. Track Xbox quests, purchase promotions, streak bonuses, and limited-time deals in a separate line.
- Check regional restrictions. Do not use another country’s online list as your expected total.
- Apply a discount for missed days. If you miss a Daily Set, fail a monthly requirement, or do not complete a quest, reduce the estimate rather than assuming a perfect month.
A simple worksheet might look like this:
| Category | How to treat it |
|---|---|
| Searches | Daily cap × calendar days; relatively predictable if searches qualify |
| Monthly bonuses | Include only after checking the requirements and claim window |
| Daily quizzes and activities | Use the values shown on the live Earn page |
| Xbox quests | Variable; check membership tier and annual gameplay limits |
| Purchases | Do not count unless the purchase is already planned and the offer is active |
| Limited-time promotions | Keep outside the dependable baseline |
Common reasons points stop accruing
Reaching a displayed target does not always mean the account has been suspended or broken. Microsoft identifies several ordinary explanations:
Rank #4
- Precision Typing: An instantly familiar experience, type with ease and comfort on this full-size wireless keyboard, featuring reduced noise, palm rest, spill-resistant design (1), adjustable tilt legs
- Built For Comfort: The sleek combo's wireless mouse features an ambidextrous shape and soft rubber side grips that fit comfortably in your palm, as well as enhanced tracking and precise cursor control
- Long-Lasting Autonomy: The wireless keyboard and mouse set come with long-lasting battery life, with the keyboard lasting up to 36 months and the wireless mouse for up to 18 months (3)
- Customized Control: Enhanced productivity at your fingertips, the computer keyboard comes built with convenient, essential hotkeys providing direct access to media, calculator, battery check functions
- Wireless Freedom: Plug-and-play your keyboard and mouse with the mini Logitech Unifying USB receiver, for a reliable wireless connection up to 33 ft away from your PC or laptop (2)
- The PC or mobile search counter has reached its daily maximum.
- The browser is signed into a different Microsoft account.
- Browser data has not synchronized with the Rewards account.
- Searches appear automated, manipulative, or too rapid.
- The account is earning from outside its normal market.
- Give Mode is enabled and changes how the balance is displayed.
Microsoft recommends spreading searches throughout the day and avoiding random letters or numbers entered solely to generate points. Rapidly clicking articles or bookmarks, or using bots, macros, scripts, and emulators, can lead to earning restrictions, suspension, and invalidation of points.

VPNs, travel, and streak resets
Rewards earning and redemption are region-sensitive. VPNs and proxies can cause problems, as can earning from more than one country on the same day or attempting to redeem while traveling. Offers and redemption catalogs vary by market.
A Daily Set streak can reset if the set is not completed on time, if a VPN or different device time zone is used, or if the wrong Microsoft account is active. Check the account and device time-zone settings before assuming that a missing streak is a points calculation error.
Do Microsoft Rewards points expire?
Microsoft says points expire after 12 months without earning activity. That is different from the shorter claim period for some monthly bonuses. Keep earning activity current, and check the Rewards site for the specific expiration or claim date attached to a bonus.
What the Reddit post is—and is not—good for
The January 2023 thread is useful for understanding the scale of Rewards opportunities during a particular period. It may also help explain why users once reported totals near 27,000 points in a month when they combined searches, recurring activities, Xbox quests, promotions, and other eligible offers.
Best Value
- The things you do most are right at your fingertips with one-touch controls for instant access to play/pause, volume, mute and the Internet.
- Comfortable low-profile keys: Enjoy fast, fluid quiet typing on a familiar standard layout, including number pad.
- High-definition optical mouse: Smooth, responsive cursor control from a comfortable sculpted mouse.
- Sleek and durable design: Thin profile, spill-resistant design, durable keys and sturdy adjustable tilt legs. Tested under limited conditions (maximum of 60 ml liquid spillage). Do not immerse keyboard in liquid.
- Plug-and-play PC compatibility: Simple USB connection. Works with Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 or later or Linux kernel 2.6 or later.
It should not be used to:
- Promise a fixed monthly point balance;
- Compare accounts in different countries;
- Assume today’s search limits match January 2023 limits;
- Value points as guaranteed cash income;
- Justify purchases made only to earn promotional points.
The later November 2024 U.S.-only calculation of 17,482 points in the same Reddit thread is particularly important evidence. The change from roughly 27,000 to 17,482 does not prove that every U.S. account will earn 17,482 points; it shows that the available earning mix changes over time.
FAQ
Was 27,000 Microsoft Rewards points per month an official limit?
No. It was a January 2023 community calculation based on the offers and limits visible to a U.S. user. Microsoft did not establish it as a universal monthly allowance.
How many Microsoft Rewards points can I earn from searches now?
Microsoft’s current listed maximums are 25 points per day for Member, 50 for Silver, and 100 for Gold. PC and mobile searches share the same account-level daily cap.
Can I use a VPN to earn more Microsoft Rewards points?
You should not. Microsoft says earning and redemption are region-sensitive, and VPN or proxy use can cause earning or redemption problems, especially when activity appears to come from different countries.

The Bottom Line
The “~27,000 Microsoft Rewards points per month” figure was a historical January 2023 U.S. Reddit estimate, not a current Microsoft limit. For a realistic personal-finance estimate, use the live Earn page for your own account, count search and recurring activity conservatively, and treat Xbox quests and promotions as variable. Do not budget the points as guaranteed monthly income.
