Choose the United Explorer if you want a lower ongoing fee, one free checked bag and two United Club one-time passes. Choose the United Quest if you can use its larger travel credit, need two free checked bags for two travelers, value higher United earning and want substantially more opportunity to earn Premier Qualifying Points (PQP).
Those benefits are only valuable when you can use them under Chase and United’s rules. The comparison below uses the terms shown on Chase’s product pages in October 2026; offers, credits, qualifying-spend definitions and application bonuses can change, so confirm the live terms before applying.

United Explorer vs. United Quest: the decision in one minute
Explorer is the simpler, lower-cost choice for a traveler who usually checks one bag, can use two annual lounge passes and does not need a large PQP-earning ceiling. Its annual fee is waived for the first year and then becomes $150.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsQuest costs $350 each year, but it is designed for a heavier United traveler. It includes a recurring $200 United TravelBank credit, first and second checked bags for the cardmember and one companion on qualifying itineraries, stronger United earning, a larger card-spend PQP limit and an annual award-flight discount under the published terms.
#1 Best Overall
The practical question is not which card has the longer benefits list. It is whether the extra benefits you will actually use exceed Quest’s additional annual fee, while satisfying the operating-carrier, reservation, payment, enrollment and spending conditions.
Chase’s current product pages are the controlling references for United Explorer and United Quest.

Annual fee: calculate the value you can realistically use
Explorer’s fee profile
Explorer’s first-year fee waiver reduces the cost of trying the card. From the second year, the listed fee is $150. The card can make sense when you would otherwise pay for a checked bag, can use the two United Club passes and naturally meet the calendar-year purchase threshold for its TravelBank credit or award discount.
Do not treat a benefit’s face value as cash. A lounge pass has no value if you would not visit a United Club, and the TravelBank credit is useful only for a qualifying future United or United Express-operated flight. Spending money solely to unlock a credit can cost more than the credit saves.
Quest’s fee profile
Quest’s $350 fee is $200 higher than Explorer’s post-introductory fee. The recurring TravelBank credit can narrow that gap for someone who would buy an eligible United flight anyway. Travelers who check two bags each for themselves and a companion may also avoid more fees than Explorer provides.

- Ideal for Gifting
- Ideal for a bookworm
- Compact for travelling
Quest’s higher United earning and PQP capacity matter most to people who already concentrate substantial spending with United or are pursuing MileagePlus status. They are not automatically worth a fixed dollar amount: the sources do not establish a universal cash value for MileagePlus miles or PQP.

- Start with the annual fee that applies to your year of ownership.
- Subtract only credits you would use for an eligible purchase without changing your normal behavior.
- Add the realistic value of checked-bag savings, lounge visits and any award discount you can actually redeem.
- Value extra miles and PQP according to your own travel pattern rather than a generic cents-per-mile assumption.
- Ignore benefits requiring spending you would not otherwise make, or that are blocked by expiration, enrollment or availability rules.
For example, a United traveler who naturally spends enough to trigger Explorer’s TravelBank benefit and uses its passes may find the lower fee compelling. A couple who routinely checks two bags on qualifying United-operated flights and will use Quest’s annual credit has a different calculation. Neither conclusion applies if the traveler rarely flies United or cannot use the credits before their restrictions apply.
How the earning rates work
United airfare and United purchases
Both cards show a two-part earning structure on eligible United flights. The primary cardmember receives MileagePlus fare miles, while the card adds miles on the eligible purchase. The table’s totals assume the ticket and fare qualify under Chase’s listed conditions. Basic Economy and other base-option tickets can earn differently, so check the fare rules before forecasting returns.
Quest’s additional card earning on United purchases is most meaningful for people who buy a substantial amount of United airfare or other eligible United products. If United spending is occasional, the difference may not offset the fee gap.
Everyday categories
Explorer gives a bonus for dining and hotel stays booked directly with the hotel. Quest spreads its bonus across dining, other travel and selected streaming services and lists a higher rate for prepaid Renowned Hotels stays. Purchases outside listed categories earn the base rate on either card.

Category definitions, merchant coding and exclusions control whether a transaction qualifies. A hotel booked through a third-party portal may not receive the direct-booking treatment described for Explorer, and a streaming or travel merchant may not code as expected. Keep receipts and review the posted transaction category if a purchase matters to your strategy.

Checked bags, boarding and lounge access
What the bag benefits cover
Explorer covers the first standard checked bag for the primary cardmember and one companion on the same reservation. Quest extends the listed waiver to the first and second standard bags for each of those two travelers. That difference is potentially significant for a two-person trip, but it does not mean either card waives every baggage charge.
Chase’s conditions include a United-operated flight, a qualifying reservation, the primary cardmember’s MileagePlus number and purchasing the ticket from United with the card. The product pages also describe an account-opening waiver window; Explorer’s page states a 90-day window for flights after opening. Verify the current Quest window and all exceptions before relying on the benefit.
Partner-operated codeshares may not qualify simply because a United flight number appears on the itinerary. Check the operating carrier and the live terms for each booking.
Priority boarding
Both products list priority boarding on United-operated flights for the cardmember and companions on the same reservation. The MileagePlus number must be attached to the reservation. The benefit should not be generalized to partner-operated flights without confirming the applicable rules.
United Club passes
Explorer lists two one-time United Club passes after account opening and on each anniversary. The reviewed Quest page does not list equivalent one-time passes. Do not assume Quest’s higher fee includes lounge access; a separate lounge membership or another qualifying ticket benefit would be needed if lounge entry is important to you.
TravelBank credits and award-flight discounts
TravelBank is restricted travel credit, not cash
Explorer’s credit is tied to reaching a calendar-year purchase threshold. Quest’s credit is tied to account opening and the account anniversary. In both cases, the credit is described for a future United or United Express-operated flight, not as an unrestricted statement credit or cash rebate.
Rank #4
Before counting a credit, check its expiration, eligible fare types, booking channel and whether taxes, fees, refunds or excluded transactions affect the balance. A credit that expires before your next qualifying trip has no practical value.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The two award-discount structures are different
Explorer’s published structure requires the specified calendar-year spending threshold before the 10,000-mile award-flight discount is earned. Quest’s page says a 10,000-mile discount is available each year beginning with the first anniversary and also describes a discount after $20,000 in calendar-year spending. Because those descriptions involve different triggers, read the live Quest terms for your account rather than assuming one mechanism applies universally.
An award discount is useful only when you have enough miles, eligible award space and travel plans that fit the discount’s rules. It is not equivalent to receiving 10,000 miles in your account, and it does not guarantee that a desired flight will price low enough to book.
PQP and United status strategy
Explorer lists one PQP for each $20 spent, capped at 1,000 PQP in a calendar year. Quest lists the same earn ratio with a much larger 18,000-PQP annual cap and separately lists 1,000 Card Bonus PQP each year, subject to account-status and timing conditions.
These are card-earned PQP, not a complete status qualification method. United’s current MileagePlus requirements, flight activity, fare rules and other qualification components still apply. Confirm the current program rules before choosing a card primarily for status.
Quest’s PQP ceiling is relevant only if your spending is high enough to approach it and the resulting status has value to you. Carrying a balance and paying interest to generate PQP can overwhelm any rewards value; pay the statement in full unless you have a separate, deliberate financing plan.

Which card fits common traveler profiles?
Choose Explorer when your priority is low cost and basic United benefits
- You want the lower ongoing fee after the first year.
- You usually need only one checked bag for yourself and one companion.
- You will use two United Club one-time passes each year.
- You can naturally reach the spending threshold for its TravelBank credit or award discount, without manufactured spending.
- You fly United often enough to value priority boarding but not enough to need Quest’s larger PQP ceiling.
Choose Quest when the richer United package matches your trips
- You will use the recurring TravelBank credit for a qualifying future flight.
- You and a companion commonly check two bags each on qualifying United-operated itineraries.
- You buy enough United travel for the higher United earning to matter.
- You are pursuing MileagePlus status and can use the substantially higher card-spend PQP limit.
- You can redeem the award discount under its actual timing and spending rules.
Consider neither card when United is not your primary airline
If your flights are usually on other carriers, the United-specific bags, boarding, TravelBank and award benefits may go unused. A general travel card or another airline card could fit better, but that is a separate comparison. Do not select Quest merely because its headline benefits are larger.
Secondary credits and partner benefits
Both product pages advertise additional partner credits and offers. The Quest page lists selected streaming, grocery-delivery, rideshare, hotel, car-rental and other benefits; Explorer also lists partner-related offers. These extras can involve enrollment, a particular booking channel, a calendar-year limit, merchant restrictions or an expiration date.
Count a partner benefit only after checking that it is available to your account, that you already use the eligible service and that the required enrollment is complete. A nominal credit is not savings if you subscribe or spend solely to obtain it. The current issuer overview at United Credit Cards: Benefits & Perks Explained can help you locate the applicable terms, but your cardmember agreement controls.

Application bonuses and eligibility: what can change
Application bonuses are promotional, not permanent card features. Chase’s comparison pages have displayed varying public offers, so verify the bonus amount, required spending, eligibility restrictions, application deadline and expiration before submitting an application. A bonus may be unavailable to existing or former cardmembers under Chase’s rules.
Do not apply based on a headline bonus until you have a realistic plan to meet the required spending through ordinary purchases and can pay the resulting statement balance. Returned or excluded transactions may not count, and annual-fee payments should not be assumed to qualify unless the current rewards agreement says so.
Check your credit profile, income information and existing Chase-account history before applying. Approval, credit line and bonus eligibility are determined by the issuer; neither card guarantees approval or a particular credit limit.
A decision checklist before you apply
- Write down the United flights you expect to take in the next 12 months and whether they are United-operated.
- Estimate how many travelers will check bags and how many bags each will check.
- Mark whether you would use United Club passes, if considering Explorer.
- Confirm that a future qualifying United or United Express flight exists for any TravelBank credit you plan to count.
- Estimate United airfare, other United purchases and everyday category spending from your actual budget.
- If status matters, compare your expected card spend with each card’s PQP mechanism and the current MileagePlus requirements.
- Read the live bag, boarding, award-discount and credit terms, including account-opening windows, enrollment steps and expiration dates.
- Compare the resulting realistic value with the annual fee, then apply only if the card still works without carrying interest.
Bottom line: Explorer or Quest?
Explorer is the better fit for a cost-conscious United flyer who values a first checked bag, two annual Club passes and a manageable post-introductory fee. Quest is the better fit for a frequent United traveler who will use the larger TravelBank credit, two-bag allowance, stronger United earning and expanded PQP opportunity.
