Choose a United card when United-specific benefits—such as checked bags, boarding priority or Club passes—will be used often enough to justify the card’s rules and fee. Choose Chase Sapphire Preferred when you want flexible Chase points, broader everyday earning and the option to transfer those points to United MileagePlus. The best answer depends on your United travel frequency, bag needs, spending pattern and ability to use each card’s credits—not on the largest advertised welcome offer alone.
The United lineup is not one product: Gateway, Explorer and Quest serve very different travelers. The terms below were displayed on Chase pages on October 13, 2026; offers, fees, eligibility and benefit conditions can change by application channel and over time, so confirm the live pricing and rewards disclosures before applying.

What you are actually choosing
Chase Sapphire Preferred is a flexible-points card
Sapphire Preferred earns Chase Ultimate Rewards points. The card’s value comes from having several ways to use one currency: you can apply points within Chase’s travel ecosystem or move them to a listed airline partner, including United MileagePlus. That means choosing Sapphire Preferred does not eliminate the possibility of booking a United award; it changes where the points are earned and which redemption route you select.
The flexibility is most useful when your trips vary by airline, when you spend heavily in dining or the listed everyday categories, or when you would rather decide later which loyalty program receives your points. A transfer-partner listing does not establish a fixed cash value, a guaranteed transfer result or a particular award seat. Check the current transfer and redemption terms for the itinerary you intend to book.
United Gateway, Explorer and Quest are benefit tiers
The United cards earn MileagePlus miles directly and organize their value around United travel. Gateway is the no-annual-fee entry point, but its checked-bag benefit is tied to substantial calendar-year spending. Explorer puts the most visible trip conveniences into a mid-tier product: a first-bag benefit for the cardmember and one companion, two annual one-time Club passes and Group 2 boarding. Quest charges the highest fee in this comparison and adds a United travel credit, an annual award-flight discount and two checked bags.

How the rewards currencies differ
Direct United miles
With a United card, qualifying purchases post to MileagePlus under the card’s rules. The miles are tied to the United program, so the relevant question is whether you can use United awards and United travel benefits often enough to matter. Your result depends on the award you actually select and the issuer’s and airline’s current terms; neither the welcome offer nor the earning rate guarantees a particular trip value.
Chase points with a United option
Sapphire Preferred points are not United miles when you earn them. Chase lists United MileagePlus among its airline transfer partners, giving you a route to United awards when that is the best use. The same points can remain available for other listed uses, which can be useful if your travel plans change. Do not assume that flexibility automatically beats United miles: a traveler who repeatedly checks bags or uses United-only benefits may receive more practical value from a United tier card.

How to evaluate your real redemption pattern
- List the airlines and routes you normally use, separating United trips from everything else.
- Note whether you usually pay cash, redeem miles, or alternate between the two.
- Look at the actual award options for representative trips before assigning a value to either currency.
- Decide whether the ability to transfer Chase points is worth giving up a United card’s travel privileges.
This approach avoids assigning a universal cents-per-point figure that the issuer pages do not establish and that may not match your dates, destination or cabin.

Checked-bag benefits
Bag perks only create savings on eligible United itineraries and under the fare, ticketing and cardmember conditions in the current benefit terms. Explorer lists a free first checked bag for the primary cardmember and one companion. Quest lists two free checked bags. Gateway does not provide that benefit automatically: the two first standard checked bags are earned only after $10,000 in calendar-year spending.
Before counting a bag benefit, confirm that the traveler is the primary cardmember or an eligible companion, that the ticket is on United under the qualifying conditions, and that the bag allowance applies to the fare purchased. Do not multiply an advertised bag amount across every person or every trip without checking those rules.
Boarding and lounge access
Explorer and Quest list Group 2 boarding. Explorer also lists two United Club one-time passes per year. These are access and convenience benefits, not a guarantee that a lounge will have space or that every itinerary will qualify. Gateway’s listed terms focus on earning and the spending-triggered bag benefit rather than these travel privileges.
Quest’s credit, discount and Premier qualifying points
Quest lists a $200 United travel credit and an annual 10,000-mile award-flight discount. A credit has value only when you would otherwise make an eligible United purchase; unused credit should not be treated as cash. The offer also lists 500 Premier qualifying points after the first purchase. Premier qualifying points are relevant to United’s status framework, but receiving this amount does not promise status or any particular upgrade.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsEveryday earning: match the categories to your budget
Sapphire Preferred publishes a comparatively broad set of bonus categories: 5x on Chase Travel; 3x on dining, gas stations, EV charging, vacation homes at top brands, top streaming and online grocery, subject to exclusions; 2x on other travel; and 1x on other purchases. Read the category definitions carefully. A merchant that looks like a grocery store, streaming service or travel provider may not qualify under the issuer’s exclusions or coding.

The United cards are centered on United earning plus selected everyday categories, but the current United card disclosures do not establish one identical category structure across Gateway, Explorer and Quest. Examine the specific product disclosure for the card you are considering and compare it with your own statements. A generic claim that one airline card earns more is less useful than mapping your actual dining, travel, gas, charging, grocery and general purchases to the applicable terms.
Use an annual spending worksheet rather than a headline multiplier:
- Separate purchases that clearly fall into a published bonus category from everything else.
- Remove spending you would make only to reach a bonus or threshold.
- Check whether your merchants are processed in a way that qualifies under the issuer’s definitions.
- Compare the points or miles earned before considering travel credits and bag savings.
Annual fees and credits: do the break-even work
Gateway’s threshold trade-off
Gateway has no annual fee, so you are not paying to keep the account open. Its meaningful bag benefit, however, requires $10,000 in calendar-year spending. If your normal budget will not reach that amount, evaluate Gateway for its earning and introductory offer rather than counting bag savings you are unlikely to unlock. Never shift purchases or carry debt merely to hit the threshold.
Explorer’s first-year decision
Explorer’s annual fee is waived for the first year and listed at $150 afterward. The first-year waiver can make the initial comparison look unusually favorable. Set a reminder well before the second year to total the value of the checked-bag benefit, Club passes and other United benefits you actually used. If that value does not justify the continuing fee, reassess before the next annual charge.
Quest’s higher hurdle
Quest’s $350 annual fee is materially higher than the fees on Sapphire Preferred and Gateway. Its $200 United travel credit, award-flight discount, checked-bag allowance and other benefits can reduce the effective cost only when you use them under the qualifying conditions. A credit you would not otherwise pursue, or an award discount you cannot use, should not be assigned face-value savings.
Sapphire Preferred’s credits
Sapphire Preferred lists up to a $100 annual hotel credit through Chase Travel and up to $120 every four years toward a Global Entry, TSA PreCheck or NEXUS application fee. These are targeted credits, not automatic rebates on the annual fee. Confirm the booking channel, eligible purchase and timing requirements, then decide whether you would make those purchases without the card.

Welcome offers and spending requirements
The displayed offers have different structures. Sapphire Preferred requires $5,000 in qualifying purchases in the first three months. Gateway requires $1,000 in that period and separately lists miles for adding an authorized user. Explorer combines a $3,000 spending requirement with an authorized-user component. Quest combines a $4,000 spending requirement, an authorized-user component and 500 Premier qualifying points after the first purchase.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which card should you get? A decision framework
Choose Sapphire Preferred when flexibility is the priority
- You spend substantially on dining, travel and the listed everyday categories.
- You fly several airlines or want the option to move points to United rather than earning United miles directly.
- You can use the Chase Travel hotel credit and, when applicable, the trusted-traveler application credit.
- You prefer a lower ongoing fee than Quest and do not need United-specific bag or boarding benefits.
Sapphire Preferred is also the cleaner choice when your United travel is occasional and you would rather keep your rewards usable across more than one airline program.
Choose Gateway when avoiding an annual fee comes first
- You want a United-branded account with no annual fee.
- You can meet the introductory spending requirement naturally.
- You might reach the calendar-year spending threshold for the checked-bag benefit without changing your budget.
- You do not need Club passes, Group 2 boarding or a built-in travel credit.
If the bag threshold is unrealistic, compare Gateway’s everyday earning with Sapphire Preferred instead of assuming the no-fee card is automatically cheaper in practical terms.
Choose Explorer when United trips justify mid-tier perks
- You and a companion check bags on United often enough for the allowance to matter.
- You would use both annual Club passes and value Group 2 boarding.
- You can evaluate the account again before the post-introductory annual fee begins.
Explorer is a benefits decision, not simply a larger welcome-offer decision. The first-year fee waiver does not extend indefinitely.
Choose Quest when you can use premium United benefits repeatedly
- You will make eligible United purchases that use the travel credit.
- You can use the annual award-flight discount and regularly need two checked bags.
- The United-specific conveniences matter more to you than a lower annual fee and flexible Chase points.
- You can meet the spending requirement without financial strain and are comfortable reassessing the $350 fee each year.
Quest is difficult to justify if you would not otherwise buy United travel, use the award discount or check bags. In that case, Sapphire Preferred or a lower-fee United option may fit better.

A practical comparison process before applying
- Record a typical year. Count United flights, checked bags, companions, lounge visits, paid United purchases and non-United travel.
- Separate guaranteed from possible value. A benefit used on a booked itinerary is more concrete than a credit you might use later.
- Test the spending requirements. Use the last several months of normal expenses to see whether the welcome-offer and annual-threshold amounts are reachable.
- Compare currencies. Decide whether direct MileagePlus miles or transferable Chase points better match your likely redemptions.
- Price the second year. Include Explorer’s continuing fee and Quest’s full fee, not just the introductory period or welcome offer.
- Read the live disclosures. Verify eligibility, exclusions, authorized-user conditions, bag rules, credit timing, award restrictions and the exact offer shown in your application channel.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Counting every credit as cash
A travel credit offsets a fee only when you make an eligible purchase you genuinely wanted. If the card changes your behavior or causes an unnecessary booking, its face value overstates your savings.
Ignoring the fee after the first year
Explorer’s waiver is limited to year one. Compare the continuing fee with benefits you actually used, and perform the same annual review for Quest’s higher fee.
Assuming a bag benefit applies to every traveler
Eligibility can depend on the primary cardmember, companion, ticket and itinerary. Check the current United and issuer terms before budgeting for a trip.
Chasing a bonus with manufactured spending
Welcome offers are useful only if the required purchases fit your normal budget. Interest charges, returned payments or unnecessary purchases can erase any reward benefit.
Assuming points have a fixed value
Neither the issuer’s offer pages nor the card names establish a universal value for a Chase point or United mile. Compare the actual redemption and transfer terms for your trip.
Applying from an outdated offer
Chase explicitly says offers may vary by channel and change over time. Save a copy of the terms shown during your application and verify the current annual fee, bonus and eligibility language before submitting.
Bottom line
For most travelers who want one flexible travel card and only occasional United flights, Chase Sapphire Preferred is the more adaptable starting point because it combines broad earning with a listed United transfer option. Gateway is the no-fee United choice, but its bag benefit is tied to a significant annual-spending threshold. Explorer is aimed at travelers who will use a bag allowance, Club passes and boarding priority and who will reassess the fee after the first year. Quest can make sense for frequent United customers who will use its travel credit, award-flight discount and two-bag benefit enough to confront the higher annual fee honestly.
