Start with Compare the Market, Confused.com, GoCompare and MoneySuperMarket, then consider Mustard or Quotezone and check relevant insurers directly. Use identical details and cover settings on each site, because provider panels, prices and policy terms differ.
Which car-insurance comparison websites should you try first?
For a UK driver shopping in 2026, the main starting points identified by Which? are Compare the Market, Confused.com, GoCompare and MoneySuperMarket. Which? also lists Mustard and Quotezone as additional comparison options. None has been established as universally cheapest: your result depends on your age, address, vehicle, driving history, cover choices, quote date and the insurers participating in each panel.

| Website or route | What is established | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Compare the Market | Its provider page reported 197 car-insurance provider products, stated as correct in October 2026. That is a site-reported product count, not proof of whole-market coverage or the lowest price. | Use it as one of the first quote panels, then read the policy details behind the result. |
| Confused.com | Which? names it among the main comparison sites. It also publishes a recurring UK car-insurance price index with WTW. | Obtain an individual quote; do not treat its published average as a personal offer. |
| GoCompare | Which? names it among the main comparison sites. No current official panel count or feature comparison was published. | Include it in a multi-site check, without assuming that its panel is larger or cheaper than another site’s. |
| MoneySuperMarket | Which? names it among the main sites. Its Compare+ tool explains why prices can vary between panels and uses its own question set. | Run a quote and compare the resulting cover and payment terms with other panels. |
| Mustard and Quotezone | Which? lists both as other comparison options. | Use them when you want additional panels or when the first results do not produce suitable cover. |
| Insurers’ own websites | Some insurers are absent from comparison sites, and some products are sold only directly. Which? gives NFU Mutual, Aviva, Co-op Insurance, Direct Line, Saga and Tesco as examples of insurers worth considering for a direct check; availability varies by product. | Check relevant direct-only or potentially unlisted providers after your comparison-site search. |
The number of products shown is only one data point. A panel can return many policies that do not suit your needs, while a smaller panel may contain a better match. The useful question is whether a site returns a quote for your circumstances and how that policy compares on cover, excess, exclusions, extras and total cost.
Why a comparison site cannot guarantee the best policy
Comparison websites are quote-finding intermediaries, not impartial assessors that necessarily search every insurer or recommend the most suitable policy. The Financial Conduct Authority’s historical review of price-comparison services warned that customers may misunderstand the site’s role, concentrate on the headline price, buy unsuitable add-ons, misunderstand conflicts of interest or data use, and lack clear information about complaints and the intermediary relationship. The FCA page was last updated on 29 August 2025 and describes that review as historical, so it should be read as consumer-protection guidance rather than a new 2026 market ranking.

Panels differ. An insurer may participate on one site but not another, or negotiate a different price or commercial arrangement with each panel. MoneySavingExpert explains that separate panels and negotiations can produce different results. A quote appearing first is therefore the cheapest option returned by that particular search, not proof that it is the cheapest policy available to you.
Policy suitability also matters. A cheaper comprehensive policy with a high excess, narrow courtesy-car provision or expensive optional breakdown cover may be worse value than a slightly dearer policy with the limits you actually need. Compare the final policy documents, not just the order in which results appear.
How to compare car-insurance quotes properly
- Prepare one accurate fact sheet. Record each driver’s age, licence type and date, occupation, claims and convictions; the vehicle registration or exact model, mileage, modifications and security; annual mileage, business use, overnight parking and intended start date; and the details of any additional drivers. Insurers use these factors, along with location and cover choices, when pricing.
- Use the same assumptions everywhere. Select the same comprehensive, third-party fire and theft, or third-party-only cover; the same start date; the same annual mileage; the same drivers; and the same compulsory and voluntary excess. Include or exclude the same extras, such as breakdown, legal expenses, windscreen cover or a courtesy car. Changing one answer can make a displayed premium incomparable.
- Run at least two comparison-site searches. Which? says panels and sometimes prices differ, while MoneySavingExpert explains that sites can have different insurer lists and separately negotiated prices. More searches are useful when the quote is unusual, the vehicle is modified, or the first panel returns little suitable cover.
- Open the policy summary before judging the price. Check the insured value or repair basis, theft and fire treatment, windscreen limits, personal belongings, driving-abroad allowance, courtesy-car conditions, cancellation terms, claims contact and exclusions. Record both compulsory and voluntary excesses and the cost of every add-on.
- Check potentially missing insurers directly. If a provider is known to sell some products only through its own site, obtain a direct quote using the same cover and excess assumptions. A direct quote is a separate result, not evidence that every product from that insurer is unavailable on comparison sites.
- Compare the purchase-stage total. Note the annual payment, instalment total if paying monthly, deposit, interest or finance charge, administration fees, cancellation charge and renewal arrangements. The result-list price may change after questions are verified or extras are selected.
- Save evidence of what you accepted. Keep the quote reference, policy summary, statement of demands and needs, schedule, wording and payment confirmation. These documents make it easier to check that the policy issued matches the quote and to resolve a later dispute.
What to compare beyond the premium
Cover level and exclusions
Compare like with like. Comprehensive cover, third-party fire and theft, and third-party-only cover provide different protection; a price comparison is meaningless if the cover category changes. Within the same category, exclusions can remove cover for commuting, business use, certain security arrangements, unapproved modifications, young drivers or particular types of damage. Read the policy wording rather than relying on a short result-card description.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsExcesses
The compulsory excess is set by the insurer; the voluntary excess is the amount you choose to add. The two normally combine for a claim, so a low premium may leave you paying substantially more after an incident. Check whether separate excesses apply to theft, glass, young or inexperienced drivers and particular repairs. Choose an excess you could pay without borrowing.

Add-ons
Breakdown assistance, legal expenses, protected no-claims discount, guaranteed replacement-car cover, personal accident benefits and key or windscreen protection can be useful, but they are not automatically good value. Compare their limits, exclusions and standalone cost. The FCA specifically identified misunderstanding add-ons and focusing on headline price as consumer risks.
Claims and cancellation terms
Check how claims are reported, whether repairs must use an approved network, how a total loss is valued, and what happens if the vehicle is financed or leased. Read the cooling-off and cancellation charges, including any fee for cancelling after a claim or changing details. These terms can outweigh a small premium difference.
2026 price figures: useful context, not a personal forecast
Published averages below come from different organisations, periods and methods. They are not directly comparable and cannot predict your quote. Age, vehicle, occupation, convictions, claims and location can materially change an individual price.
| Measure | Published figure | Period and method |
|---|---|---|
| Association of British Insurers Premium Tracker, as reproduced by Which? | £566 average premiums paid | Q2 2026; a paid-premium measure. |
| Confused.com Car Insurance Price Index, as reproduced by Which? | £719 average cheapest prices quoted | Q2 2026; quoted-price measure, not necessarily the amount ultimately paid. |
| Compare the Market Premium Drivers research, as reproduced by Which? | £592.96 cheapest quotes available to the majority of customers | June 2026; its stated measure of quotes available to most customers. |
| MoneySuperMarket Price Index, as reproduced by Which? | £516.12 median price paid | May 2026; median, not an average. |
| GoCompare Price Index, as reproduced by Which? | £399 premiums paid | Q2 2026; the index’s stated paid-premium measure. |
| Quotezone Car Insurance Price Index, as reproduced by Which? | £619 median | Q2 2026; based on its stated index methodology. |
| Confused.com/WTW Car Insurance Price Index | £711 average UK car-insurance cost | Q1 2026; the index drew on more than 6 million quotes and reported £66, or 9%, less than 12 months earlier. |
| MoneySavingExpert analysis | £708 average annual policy cost on renewal day versus £374 when bought 25 days earlier | Hundreds of thousands of quotes from February to April 2026. MoneySavingExpert suggests checking around 22–26 days before the policy starts; the saving is not guaranteed for every driver. |
| Compare the Market provider page | 197 car-insurance provider products | Site-reported count stated as correct in October 2026; a product count, not a premium average or whole-market measure. |
The wide spread is expected because one figure may describe prices paid, another the cheapest quote returned, another a median, and another an average across a different customer sample. Treat these numbers as market context only.

When to run your search
MoneySavingExpert’s February–April 2026 analysis found an average annual cost of £708 when bought on the renewal day compared with £374 when bought 25 days earlier. It suggests a window of roughly 22–26 days before the policy start date. This is an observation from its analysis, not a promise that moving your date will produce the same reduction. You must never enter a false start date to obtain a lower price; the policy should begin when you actually need cover.
Run the comparison early enough to read the wording, verify your information and check direct insurers. If your circumstances change before the start date—such as a new address, vehicle, job, conviction or additional driver—tell the insurer and obtain a revised price.
Direct checks that comparison sites may miss
Which? notes that some insurers are not on comparison sites and that some providers sell particular policies only through their own websites. Its examples include NFU Mutual, Aviva, Co-op Insurance, Direct Line, Saga and Tesco. These names are examples, not a guarantee that every product from each is direct-only or absent from every panel.

A direct check is most useful when your circumstances are unusual, when a comparison panel returns limited options, or when a provider’s eligibility rules match your needs. Use the same driver, vehicle, mileage, start-date, excess and add-on assumptions so the direct quote can be compared fairly. Record whether the quote includes administration fees, monthly finance costs and the same level of protection.

Common mistakes and how to fix them
Choosing the first or cheapest result
Problem: The top result may have a high excess, restrictive exclusions or costly add-ons. Fix: Open the policy summary and wording, write down the key limits and compare at least one like-for-like alternative.
Changing details between sites
Problem: A different occupation description, mileage estimate, parking location or start date makes the premiums incomparable and may create inaccurate insurance information. Fix: Keep a single fact sheet and copy the same answers to every panel.
Assuming a large panel covers the whole market
Problem: A provider count does not show that every insurer participates or that the products are suitable. Fix: Try more than one panel and check relevant direct sellers.

Ignoring monthly-payment cost
Problem: The annual-equivalent premium may be lower than the total of instalments, which can include finance charges or a deposit. Fix: Compare the total amount payable and cancellation terms, not only the monthly figure.

Buying unnecessary extras
Problem: Preselected or prominently displayed add-ons can raise the price without solving a real need. Fix: Check each add-on’s limit, exclusions and separate price before accepting it.
Using an average as a budget promise
Problem: National figures combine different customer groups and definitions. Fix: Use the averages only as broad context and budget from your own verified quotes.
Failing to keep quote records
Problem: You may not be able to show which excess, add-ons or declarations you accepted. Fix: Save the quote reference, schedule, policy wording and payment confirmation.
A practical decision framework
Use the following order when deciding which result to buy:
- Eligibility: Does the insurer accept your vehicle, drivers, use and location?
- Protection: Does the cover meet your required level, repair, theft, glass, courtesy-car and travel needs?
- Claim exposure: Are the combined excesses affordable, and are important exclusions acceptable?
- Total cost: What is payable annually or through instalments after every chosen extra and fee?
- Service terms: Are claims contact, cancellation, complaints and repair arrangements clear?
- Market check: Did you compare another panel and any relevant direct insurer using identical assumptions?
If two policies remain close after this check, choose the one whose wording, excess and claims arrangements you understand better rather than relying on a small difference in premium.
Bottom line for UK drivers in 2026
Begin with Compare the Market, Confused.com, GoCompare and MoneySuperMarket; add Mustard or Quotezone if you want another panel, and check suitable insurers directly. There is no evidence that one website is cheapest for everyone. The reliable way to find value is to submit identical, accurate details to multiple sites, compare equivalent cover and excesses, inspect exclusions and add-ons, and judge the final total payable—not the headline result or a national average.
