Short answer: your UAN (Universal Account Number) is EPFO’s 12-digit umbrella number, while an EPF Member ID identifies a particular provident-fund membership connected with an establishment (employer). One UAN can hold several Member IDs. When you change jobs, give your existing UAN to the new employer so the new establishment’s Member ID can be linked to it; do not apply for another UAN simply because the Member ID changes.
UAN and EPF Member ID are different numbers with different jobs
The confusion usually starts when a payslip, onboarding form or EPFO screen shows both numbers. They are related, but they are not interchangeable.

- UAN: Universal Account Number. EPFO describes it as a 12-digit number for a member. It acts as the umbrella, or pivot, that connects the member’s EPF memberships.
- EPF Member ID: the establishment-linked membership or account identifier allotted when an EPF-covered employer enrolls you. Different establishments can allot different Member IDs to the same person.
Think of the UAN as the stable identity for your EPFO membership history and each Member ID as a job-specific record underneath it. The UAN is intended to remain the same when you move between EPF-covered employers; the Member ID may change because the establishment has changed.

What “member,” “establishment” and “account” mean here
In EPFO terminology, a member is the individual covered by the provident-fund system. An establishment is the employer or covered organization through which that membership is recorded. A Member ID is therefore connected to a particular employment relationship, while the UAN is connected to you as the member.
People often call a Member ID a “PF account number.” That shorthand is understandable, but it can cause mistakes when a form separately asks for a UAN and a Member ID. Use the exact label shown on the form. If it asks for the UAN, enter the 12-digit umbrella number. If it asks for the Member ID for a particular establishment, enter that employment-linked identifier.
A payslip, appointment file or employer portal may display only one of these numbers. That does not mean the other identifier has disappeared. Keep both in your records, because they answer different questions: “Which EPFO member is this?” versus “Which establishment-linked membership is this?”
UAN vs EPF Member ID: side-by-side comparison
| Comparison point | UAN | EPF Member ID |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | Universal Account Number | Member Identification Number, commonly called Member ID |
| What it represents | Your EPFO umbrella identity | A particular EPF membership associated with an establishment |
| Digits | 12 digits, according to EPFO’s UAN and KYC FAQ | Format can depend on the EPFO record and establishment; do not assume it is the same as a UAN |
| How many can one person have? | Normally one UAN is used to connect the person’s EPF memberships | Several can exist when the person has worked for different establishments |
| What happens after a job change? | Provide the existing UAN to the new employer | The new establishment may allot a new Member ID, which should be linked to the existing UAN |
| Main practical use | Connect and access your EPFO memberships and member services | Identify the EPF membership created through a specific establishment |
The table’s most important row is the last one about a job change: a new Member ID does not automatically mean you need a new UAN.
How one UAN can contain multiple Member IDs
Each establishment can create its own membership record
Suppose you work for Establishment A first. EPFO records an EPF membership for that employment and associates it with a Member ID. Later, you join Establishment B. The second employer may allot another Member ID for the new employment. Both records can be connected to your one UAN.
The UAN therefore provides a way to view or manage the member’s connected employment-linked records rather than treating every job as a completely unrelated EPF identity.
A simple timeline example
- First EPF-covered job: Establishment A creates or uses a Member ID and a UAN is assigned to you.
- Second EPF-covered job: Establishment B creates a new Member ID for that employment.
- Linking step: you give Establishment B the UAN you already have, allowing the new Member ID to be linked under it where applicable.
- Result: the UAN remains the umbrella number, while the employment records retain their separate Member IDs.
This is why a payroll form can legitimately ask for both numbers: the UAN identifies the overall member, and the Member ID identifies the particular employment record.

Another example: three establishments
Imagine that you worked for Establishments A, B and C over several years. You may see three establishment-linked Member IDs, one for each employment, while the same UAN links them. The identifiers do not need to have identical formatting, and seeing more than one Member ID is not, by itself, evidence of duplicate membership or an error.
The important check is association: the Member IDs should be connected to the correct UAN and the correct employment history. If one appears under another person’s details or under a separate UAN created during onboarding, raise that discrepancy with payroll or an official EPFO channel.
What to do when you change jobs
EPFO’s member guidance says that an employee who already has a UAN should provide it on joining a new establishment. The employer can then link the newly allotted Member ID to that UAN. Follow this sequence.
1. Locate your existing UAN before completing onboarding
Use the official EPFO member services to retrieve or confirm the UAN. The current member portal lists a “Know Your UAN” option. If you have used EPFO services before, check your existing records rather than assuming the new employer must create a fresh number.

Check old official EPFO correspondence, employment records or account screens only as aids to identification; confirm the number through the current official service when possible. A number copied incorrectly by one digit can prevent the new Member ID from being linked correctly.
2. Give the existing UAN to the new employer
Enter the number exactly as shown in your EPFO record. If the employer’s onboarding form asks for a previous Member ID, provide the relevant employment-linked identifier as well, but do not substitute the Member ID for the UAN field.
Tell payroll that you already have a UAN and want the new establishment’s Member ID associated with it. Keep a copy or screenshot of the submitted details, including the date, so you can show what number you supplied if a mismatch appears later.
3. Check that the new membership is associated with the UAN
After the new employment is processed, review the member services associated with your UAN. You are checking for the new establishment’s Member ID under the same umbrella, not expecting the old Member ID to be reused.
The timing and display of a new record can depend on employer processing and the portal’s current workflow. If it is not visible immediately, recheck using the official service and ask payroll when the employment record was submitted. Do not respond to a short delay by applying for another UAN.
4. Resolve a mismatch promptly
If the new job appears to have produced a separate UAN, or the new Member ID is not connected to your existing UAN, ask the employer’s payroll or EPFO help channel to correct the record. Keep copies of your onboarding submission and the UAN you supplied. Do not create yet another UAN to work around a linkage problem.
When reporting the issue, describe the exact problem: a duplicate UAN, an unlinked new Member ID, or incorrect personal details. Include only the information requested through the official channel, and do not send passwords or one-time passwords to an unverified contact.
Does a new job require a new UAN?
Usually, no. A new establishment may allot a new Member ID because it is a different employer, but EPFO’s member FAQ instructs an existing member to provide the current UAN so that the new Member ID can be linked to it. The appearance of a different Member ID is therefore expected in a job change.

First confirm whether the employer used your existing number and whether the new membership has been linked correctly.
Do not confuse “new membership” with “new umbrella number.” The first describes the employment record created by the new establishment; the second would describe a separate member identity. EPFO’s guidance is designed to keep successive memberships under the existing UAN where applicable.
How to find or access your UAN and Member ID
Use the current EPFO member portal labels
The live EPFO member portal currently displays these relevant options:
Rank #3
- Know Your UAN: for members who need to retrieve or identify their UAN.
- Direct UAN Allotment: an option shown for direct UAN generation in the circumstances covered by the portal.
- UAN for Existing PF: an option for members who already have an EPF account or membership and need the applicable UAN workflow.
Portal screens and eligibility checks can change. Follow the instructions and verification requirements displayed on the official EPFO site at the time you use the service instead of relying on an old screenshot or a previously memorized menu path.
Recommended Free Tools
These labels are not interchangeable. “Know Your UAN” is a lookup route, while “Direct UAN Allotment” and “UAN for Existing PF” address particular generation or existing-membership situations. Read the eligibility text on the page before selecting an option.
Use UMANG when the portal notice directs you there
The current portal notice says that activation for existing UANs and generation of new UANs can be done through the UMANG app. If the web portal directs you to UMANG, use the current app workflow and its on-screen instructions. The exact sequence, verification prompts and available functions may be revised, so do not treat an older step-by-step guide as permanent.
Use the official UMANG application and verify that you are following the current EPFO service listing. If a third-party page asks for your login credentials, identity documents or one-time password outside the official flow, stop and return to the EPFO or UMANG service.
Check your employment records for the Member ID
A Member ID is tied to an establishment. Look at the EPF information supplied by your employer or shown in your official member account for the relevant employment. Do not infer a Member ID from the UAN’s 12-digit format: they are separate identifiers, and the Member ID’s presentation can vary by record or service.
If you have worked for several establishments, label your saved records by employer and employment period. That simple habit helps you select the correct Member ID when a form asks for the account associated with a particular establishment.
What older EPFO service lists can—and cannot—tell you
An older EPFO member FAQ listed facilities such as passbook and UAN-card downloads, a list of previous Member IDs, KYC entry, online transfer-claim eligibility and personal-detail editing. Those features explain the kinds of tasks the member portal has supported, but the list is not a guarantee that every item, label or eligibility rule is unchanged today.
For a current action, start with the live EPFO member portal or the UMANG instructions it provides. Treat archived FAQs as explanations of the UAN–Member ID relationship, not as a definitive menu of today’s screens.
If an older instruction conflicts with a current portal notice, follow the current official workflow for the task and retain the older wording only as background about the identifiers. Avoid assuming that a menu has the same name, location or eligibility conditions it had in an earlier FAQ.
What the UAN-based ECR notice means
EPFO’s employer portal states that the Electronic Challan-cum-Return (ECR) format was revised to be UAN-based and to omit the erstwhile Member ID. That notice concerns the format employers use for reporting. It does not establish that Member IDs have disappeared from EPF account records or from every member-facing service.
In practical terms, do not conclude from an employer’s ECR file or a payroll report that your Member ID is invalid or that the UAN and Member ID have become the same number. The reporting format and the underlying account identifiers serve different purposes.
Rank #4
A payroll export can therefore look different from an employee’s account view without indicating a contradiction. For questions about your own membership, rely on the member-facing record and the instructions from EPFO, not solely on the columns included in an employer’s ECR file.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Mistake: entering the Member ID where a form asks for the UAN
Why it fails: the form is asking for the umbrella number, not the establishment-specific membership identifier.

Mistake: assuming every new Member ID is a new UAN
Why it fails: different establishments can allot different Member IDs under one UAN.
Fix: provide your existing UAN to the new employer and verify that the new membership is linked.
Mistake: applying for a second UAN because the old number is not immediately visible
Why it fails: a missing login detail or an unfamiliar portal path is not evidence that no UAN exists.

Keeping your EPFO identifiers accurate
- Save your UAN in a secure password manager or another protected record rather than relying on a single payslip.
- When you join an employer, compare the UAN you submit with the number in your official EPFO record.
- Keep the Member IDs from previous establishments for your own employment history, even though they sit under the UAN umbrella.
- Review the official member account after a new job is processed to check that the new establishment appears under the correct UAN.
- Do not share one-time passwords, login credentials or identity documents through unofficial messages claiming to update your UAN.
- Record the employer name and dates next to each Member ID so you can identify the correct one when completing a form.
- Keep copies of onboarding submissions and correction requests until the new membership is visible under the correct UAN.
These checks are administrative safeguards. They do not change the underlying rule: the UAN is the umbrella identifier, while each Member ID belongs to a particular establishment-linked EPF membership.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a UAN the same as an EPF Member ID?
No. The UAN is EPFO’s 12-digit umbrella number for you as a member. A Member ID identifies an EPF membership connected with a particular establishment.
Can one UAN have multiple Member IDs?
Yes. Different establishments can allot different Member IDs, and those memberships can be linked under one UAN.
What should I give a new employer when I change jobs?
Give the new employer your existing UAN. The employer can then link the newly allotted Member ID for that establishment to your UAN.
Do I need a new UAN when my Member ID changes?
Usually not. A new Member ID can be normal when you join a different establishment. A separate UAN should be treated as a record issue to investigate.
Recommended Free Tools
Where can I find my UAN?
Use the current official EPFO member portal’s “Know Your UAN” option. The portal may also direct you to current UMANG instructions.
What is the difference between UAN for Existing PF and Direct UAN Allotment?
They are separate options shown on the current EPFO portal for different situations. Read the portal’s current eligibility and verification instructions before choosing one.
Does the UAN-based ECR format mean Member IDs no longer exist?
No. The ECR notice concerns the employer reporting format. It does not, by itself, remove Member IDs from EPF account records or every member service.
What should I do if a new job creates a separate UAN?
Do not apply for another UAN. Ask the employer’s payroll team or an official EPFO channel to check the record and link the new Member ID to your existing UAN where applicable.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: the UAN is your 12-digit EPFO umbrella number; the EPF Member ID belongs to a specific establishment-linked membership. Keep using the same UAN when changing jobs, give it to the new employer, and expect the new employment to receive its own Member ID. Use the live EPFO member portal or UMANG instructions for current lookup and activation steps, and treat any duplicate UAN or missing linkage as a record problem to correct.
