TreasuryDirect vs. a Brokerage: Where to Buy Treasuries

By TheFinanceBase Team 10 min read

Use TreasuryDirect if you want a fee-free, straightforward way to buy Treasury securities at auction and hold them to maturity. Use a brokerage, bank, or dealer if you need secondary-market access, want the option of competitive bidding, or may sell before maturity without first transferring the security out of TreasuryDirect.

Both channels can provide access to Treasury auctions. The important differences are bid type, account and intermediary fees, where the security is held, and the work required to sell early.

The short answer: which channel fits your situation?

If your priority is… Usually the better fit Why
Buying at auction with a simple rate decision TreasuryDirect You place a noncompetitive bid and accept the auction-determined rate or yield. The Treasury says opening an account and buying securities through the service are free.
Choosing a maximum acceptable yield or discount rate Brokerage, bank, or dealer An intermediary can submit competitive bids. A competitive bid can receive a full award, a partial award, or no award.
Buying an already-issued Treasury Brokerage, bank, or dealer The commercial book-entry system supports secondary-market purchases through the intermediary.
Selling before maturity Brokerage, bank, or dealer You can contact the institution holding the security. A TreasuryDirect purchase generally must remain there for 45 calendar days before it can be transferred out for a sale.
Keeping the process free of account and purchase charges TreasuryDirect TreasuryDirect states that its account-opening and purchase service has no fee. An intermediary may charge for its own services.

This is a channel comparison, not a ranking of individual brokers. Brokerage features and fees differ, so review the current terms of any institution you consider.

What you can buy through either channel

The comparison concerns marketable Treasury securities: Treasury bills, notes, bonds, Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS), and Floating Rate Notes (FRNs). These securities are issued through public auctions and can generally be transferred or sold before maturity, subject to the account and transfer procedures that apply to the place where you hold them.

Treasury bills

Treasury bills are discount securities. Rather than paying a periodic coupon, a bill pays its interest at maturity through the difference between its purchase price and the amount paid at maturity. No single bill term or secondary-market price applies across all offerings, so those details depend on the specific offering or security.

Treasury notes

Treasury notes have terms of 2, 3, 5, 7, or 10 years. Treasury guidance describes them as paying fixed interest every six months, with a $100 minimum purchase. A note can therefore look different from a bill in both cash-flow timing and maturity length.

Treasury bonds, TIPS, and FRNs

Treasury bonds, TIPS, and FRNs are also marketable Treasury categories. A complete term, coupon, or inflation-adjustment schedule is not provided for each category. Check the details of the particular auction announcement or security rather than assuming that every Treasury pays the same type of interest.

How TreasuryDirect works

TreasuryDirect is the U.S. Treasury’s online account service for buying and holding savings bonds and marketable securities. For marketable securities, the direct purchase flow is an auction flow: you choose an offering and submit a noncompetitive bid.

Your bid is noncompetitive

A noncompetitive bidder does not name a rate or yield. You agree to accept the rate or yield determined by the auction, provided your order meets the offering rules. This removes the risk that a competitive bid will be rejected because your requested rate is too aggressive, but it also means you cannot set a personal minimum yield through TreasuryDirect’s direct auction process.

Minimum and maximum bid amounts

Current Treasury buying guidance specifies a $100 minimum bid and a $10 million maximum for a noncompetitive bid. Those limits apply to the noncompetitive bidding guidance; always check the terms of the particular offering before submitting an order.

Account and purchase fees

TreasuryDirect says there is no fee to open an account or buy securities through the service. That statement covers TreasuryDirect’s account and purchase service. It does not mean that a separate bank or broker would charge nothing for moving or holding a security outside TreasuryDirect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Holding and reinvestment

After purchase, you can hold the security in TreasuryDirect until maturity. The service also offers reinvestment for certain marketable-security types. Reinvestment availability is not universal across every Treasury category, so look for the option on the specific security and maturity you own.

A limitation to know before you buy

TreasuryDirect does not offer cash management bills. If the particular Treasury product you want is a cash management bill, you need to use an eligible bank, broker, or dealer rather than the TreasuryDirect purchase flow.

How a brokerage, bank, or dealer works

A commercial intermediary can submit a Treasury auction order for you and hold the resulting security in the commercial book-entry system. Your relationship is with that institution, not directly with a TreasuryDirect account.

Two auction bid types

An intermediary can accept both noncompetitive and competitive bids. With a noncompetitive order, you accept the auction result. With a competitive order, you state the discount rate, yield, or discount margin you are willing to accept. The auction may award the entire requested amount, only part of it, or none of it. A competitive bid therefore gives you more control over the acceptable rate but introduces the possibility of a partial or zero award.

Secondary-market access

The commercial book-entry system also supports transactions in securities that have already been issued. That gives you a way to buy an existing Treasury rather than waiting for the next auction of a new issue. It also gives you a direct channel for selling a holding before maturity through the institution that maintains the account.

Intermediary fees and services

The Treasury says commercial book-entry services may involve fees. The amount, if any, is provider-specific. Review the current fee schedule and account terms for such items as Treasury auction orders, secondary-market trades, transfers, and other account services. Treasury’s official material does not identify one broker as cheapest or best for every investor.

Side-by-side comparison

Decision point TreasuryDirect Brokerage, bank, or dealer
Where the account is maintained Direct TreasuryDirect account recording your holdings Commercial book-entry account maintained by the intermediary
Auction bids accepted Noncompetitive only Competitive and noncompetitive
Rate or yield choice Accept the auction-determined rate or yield Noncompetitive accepts the result; competitive lets you specify an acceptable rate, yield, or discount margin
Possible auction result for a competitive order Not applicable because TreasuryDirect does not take competitive bids Full award, partial award, or no award
Account-opening and direct purchase charge TreasuryDirect states these are free May include intermediary charges; check the provider’s current terms
Buying an already-issued security The direct purchase instructions cover auction purchases Secondary-market purchases are available through the commercial system
Selling before maturity Generally requires 45 calendar days in TreasuryDirect first, then a transfer to a broker, dealer, or financial institution for the sale Work with the institution already holding the security
Reinvestment Available for certain marketable-security types Depends on the intermediary’s services and the security

Buying at auction: step-by-step workflows

Buying through TreasuryDirect

  1. Open and fund the TreasuryDirect account. The service is the Treasury’s online account platform for holding your securities.
  2. Select the auction offering. Choose the bill, note, bond, TIPS, or FRN identified in the current offering information.
  3. Enter a noncompetitive bid. Use an amount within the cited $100 minimum and $10 million maximum for noncompetitive bids.
  4. Accept the auction result. You are not naming a yield; your order accepts the rate or yield set by the auction.
  5. Plan to hold or reinvest. You may hold to maturity, and reinvestment is available for certain eligible marketable securities.
  6. Account for the 45-day restriction. If you might need to sell early, remember that a newly purchased marketable security generally must remain in TreasuryDirect for 45 calendar days before transfer or sale.

Buying through a brokerage, bank, or dealer

  1. Confirm the institution offers Treasury auction orders. The Treasury recognizes banks, brokers, and dealers as channels for auction bidding.
  2. Choose the bid type. Submit a noncompetitive bid if you want to accept the auction result, or a competitive bid if you want to specify an acceptable discount rate, yield, or discount margin.
  3. Set the amount and submit before the institution’s deadline. The intermediary’s cutoff can be different from the Treasury’s public auction schedule, so use the instructions shown in that account.
  4. Review the award. A competitive order can be fully filled, partially filled, or not filled. A noncompetitive order accepts the auction-determined result.
  5. Manage the security in the commercial account. The same account can generally be used for eligible secondary-market purchases and for selling a holding before maturity.

How selling early differs

Selling a TreasuryDirect holding

TreasuryDirect’s operational rule is the key constraint: “In Treasury Direct, when you buy a Treasury marketable security, you must hold it in your TreasuryDirect account for 45 days before selling or transferring it.” The U.S. Department of the Treasury, Bureau of the Fiscal Service, publishes that wording on its “Selling a Treasury Marketable Security” page; the accompanying buying guidance specifies calendar days.

After the 45-calendar-day period, TreasuryDirect does not provide a direct sale from the account. You must transfer the security to a broker, dealer, or financial institution, then arrange the sale through that commercial institution. The transfer adds an operational step and can matter if you expect to need the money quickly.

Selling a brokerage-held holding

If the security is already in a commercial book-entry account, contact the institution that holds it and use its sale process. The TreasuryDirect 45-day rule is not a blanket rule for every brokerage-held security; it specifically concerns newly purchased marketable securities held in TreasuryDirect.

Why the distinction matters

Both channels can lead to ownership of the same type of Treasury security, but they are not interchangeable after the purchase. TreasuryDirect is optimized for a direct auction purchase and holding workflow. A commercial account is designed to combine auction orders with secondary-market transactions and account-based selling.

Which channel should you choose?

Choose TreasuryDirect when simplicity and direct cost are your priorities

  • You are comfortable accepting the auction-determined rate or yield.
  • You expect to hold the security to maturity or can wait through the 45-calendar-day TreasuryDirect holding period before arranging a transfer.
  • You want the Treasury’s stated fee-free account-opening and purchase service.
  • You do not need to buy an already-issued security in the secondary market.

Choose a brokerage, bank, or dealer when flexibility is more important

  • You may need to sell before maturity and want the security already positioned in a commercial account.
  • You want to buy an existing issue in the secondary market rather than only new auction offerings.
  • You want the option of a competitive auction bid with a specified acceptable rate, yield, or discount margin.
  • You prefer to manage Treasuries alongside other holdings through one intermediary account.

Use a two-channel approach only if the extra administration is worth it

An investor can use TreasuryDirect for some auction purchases and a commercial account for secondary-market access or early-sale needs. The trade-off is administrative: holdings are split between systems, transfer procedures still apply to TreasuryDirect purchases, and intermediary fees may apply in the commercial account. Choose this arrangement for a specific operational reason rather than assuming that more accounts automatically produce a better result.

Costs, limits, and operational details to check

Do not confuse a free TreasuryDirect purchase with a free brokerage service

TreasuryDirect’s no-fee statement applies to opening the account and buying through TreasuryDirect. A broker, bank, or dealer may charge for its own account or transaction services. Compare the provider’s current terms, especially if you expect to buy in the secondary market, transfer a security, or sell before maturity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the bid limit tied to the right channel

The cited $100 minimum and $10 million maximum are TreasuryDirect’s current noncompetitive-bid figures. They should not be treated as a universal statement about every competitive order or every intermediary’s order-entry rules.

Separate Treasury issuance statistics from investor outcomes

The U.S. Department of the Treasury reported 444 public auctions and about $29.7 trillion in marketable securities issued in 2025. Those are system-wide issuance figures, not an investor return, a market-yield forecast, or evidence that TreasuryDirect or a brokerage produces better performance.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Mistake: expecting TreasuryDirect to sell directly

Fix: Treat TreasuryDirect as the purchase-and-hold account for this purpose. After the applicable 45 calendar days, transfer the security to a broker, dealer, or financial institution before arranging a sale.

Mistake: assuming every Treasury pays a coupon

Fix: Identify the security type. Bills are discount securities that pay interest at maturity. Treasury note guidance describes fixed interest every six months. Do not apply the note schedule to bills or to categories whose terms were not specified.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistake: selecting a competitive bid without understanding the outcome

Fix: A competitive bidder names an acceptable rate, yield, or discount margin. The order can receive the full amount, part of the amount, or nothing. Use a noncompetitive bid if your priority is accepting the auction result rather than setting a rate condition.

Mistake: treating “no fee” as a universal promise

Fix: TreasuryDirect’s fee-free claim covers its account-opening and purchase service. Read the commercial intermediary’s current fee schedule separately.

Mistake: buying in TreasuryDirect when early liquidity is likely

Fix: Decide where you may need to sell before submitting the order. A TreasuryDirect purchase has the 45-calendar-day holding requirement and then a transfer step; a commercial account can handle the sale through the institution holding the security.

Mistake: using a brokerage without checking auction and secondary-market capabilities

Fix: Confirm whether the institution accepts competitive bids, noncompetitive bids, secondary-market purchases, transfers, and early sales, and ask what fees apply to each service.

Questions to answer before placing an order

  • Am I buying a new issue at auction or an already-issued security?
  • Do I want to accept the auction rate, or do I need to specify an acceptable rate or yield?
  • Could I need to sell before maturity?
  • If I use TreasuryDirect, can I tolerate 45 calendar days before a transfer or sale?
  • Have I checked the intermediary’s current fee schedule and transaction capabilities?
  • Am I comparing the correct Treasury type, especially the difference between a bill’s discount structure and a note’s fixed semiannual interest?

Bottom line

TreasuryDirect is the direct, fee-free auction route for a noncompetitive bid and a hold-to-maturity plan. A brokerage, bank, or dealer is the more flexible route when you want competitive bidding, secondary-market purchases, or a straightforward early-sale process. Decide based on how you will bid, where you need the security held, and how likely you are to sell before maturity—not on the Treasury security itself, which is issued by the same U.S. Treasury regardless of the purchase channel.
