Choose Treasuries when preserving capital and minimizing credit risk is the priority; consider corporate bonds when you can accept company-specific risk in exchange for potentially higher income. Neither choice eliminates risk. Both can lose market value when interest rates rise, both can lose purchasing power to inflation, and either can sell for more or less than face value before maturity.
The decisive questions are who owes you the money, how long you can hold the bond, whether you need to sell early, and whether the extra corporate yield adequately compensates for default, liquidity, call and tax considerations.

Treasury bonds
Treasury bonds are debt issued by the U.S. Department of the Treasury. The federal government promises the interest and principal payments, backed by its full faith and credit. That backing substantially reduces credit or default risk compared with debt issued by a company, although it does not protect you from price losses if you sell before maturity.

Treasury notes have 2-, 3-, 5-, 7- or 10-year maturities, while Treasury bonds mature in 20 or 30 years. Notes and bonds generally pay interest every six months. Treasury bills mature in one year or less and are sold at a discount or at face value rather than paying a conventional coupon. The maturity and payment structure matter when you compare a Treasury with a corporate issue.

Corporate bonds
A corporate bond is a loan to a company. The issuer agrees to pay stated interest and return principal under the bond’s indenture, but repayment depends on the company remaining able to meet its obligations. A strong company may present relatively low default risk; a financially stressed or highly leveraged company may offer a much higher yield because investors require compensation for the possibility of missed payments or a restructuring.
Credit ratings from rating agencies are estimates of relative credit risk, not guarantees. Ratings can be downgraded as business conditions change, and even an investment-grade rating does not eliminate the possibility of loss. High-yield, or non-investment-grade, bonds generally pay more interest because their estimated default risk is greater.
Core differences at a glance
| Decision factor | Treasury bonds | Corporate bonds | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Issuer and repayment | U.S. Department of the Treasury; backed by the federal government’s full faith and credit. | A company; payment depends on that issuer’s ability to pay. | Corporate analysis must cover the issuer’s finances and debt terms. A rating is an opinion, not insurance. |
| Potential yield | Set at auction or reflected in the secondary-market price and yield. | Depends on maturity, coupon, market price, structure and credit quality; lower-quality bonds generally offer higher yields. | Compare yield to maturity for securities with similar maturity, cash flows and, for corporates, credit quality. |
| Interest-rate exposure | Present for fixed-rate issues, especially longer maturities. | Also present; maturity and coupon affect sensitivity. | When market rates rise, existing fixed-rate bond prices generally fall; longer maturities usually move more. |
| Inflation exposure | Ordinary Treasuries make fixed payments that lose purchasing power when prices rise. TIPS adjust principal with the Consumer Price Index. | Most conventional issues make fixed payments that also lose purchasing power in inflation. | If inflation protection is central, compare TIPS separately with nominal bonds. |
| Liquidity and early sale | Often can be held to maturity or sold in the secondary market; the sale price may be above or below face value. | Liquidity varies by issue. The SEC notes that corporate-bond pricing is less transparent than stock-market pricing and a buyer may be harder to find. | Match maturity to the date you need the money and check likely spreads and transaction costs. |
| Calls and contract terms | Follows the Treasury issue’s published terms. | Some issues can be called before maturity; indentures may contain covenants, restrictions and remedies. | Read the call schedule and indenture before buying a corporate bond. |
How yield, coupon and price fit together
Coupon is not your actual return
The coupon is the interest rate applied to a bond’s face value. Yield to maturity (YTM) incorporates the price you pay, the coupon payments, the face value due at maturity and the time remaining. Two bonds with the same coupon can have different YTMs if they trade at different prices or mature on different dates.

Why prices move opposite to rates
If newly issued bonds begin offering higher rates, an older fixed-rate bond becomes less attractive unless its price falls enough to give a new buyer a competitive yield. If market rates fall, an older bond with a relatively high coupon can become more valuable and its price can rise. This inverse relationship applies to Treasury bonds as well as corporate bonds.
TreasuryDirect explains the secondary-market relationship this way: a bond or note generally sells below par when its YTM is above its coupon rate, at par when the two match, and above par when its YTM is below its coupon rate. These are mechanics, not a promise that any particular security will produce a gain.
What happens at maturity
If you hold a bond to maturity, the issuer is scheduled to return face value under the bond’s terms, along with any remaining interest payments. That does not remove default risk for a corporate bond, and it does not protect the purchasing power of the returned dollars from inflation. If you sell earlier, the market determines your price; it may be higher or lower than face value.

Risks you must evaluate
Credit and default risk
Treasuries carry the lowest conventional credit risk for a U.S. investor because they are obligations of the federal government. Corporate investors bear the possibility that a company will pay late, restructure its debt or default. Recovery in a default depends on the issuer’s assets, the bond’s seniority and the legal terms.

Do not treat a rating as a permanent safety label. Ratings can change, and a downgrade can reduce a bond’s market price even before any payment is missed. Read financial statements, debt levels, interest-coverage trends, industry conditions and the issuer’s stated use of borrowed money when the position is large or important to your plan.
Interest-rate risk
The SEC’s investor bulletin states that “Interest rate risk is common to all bonds, even U.S. Treasury bonds.” A longer maturity generally means a larger price response to a given rate change. A low-coupon bond also tends to have more rate sensitivity than a comparable higher-coupon bond because more of its value arrives at maturity.
Rate risk matters most when you may need to sell. If your objective and cash reserve allow you to hold the issue through maturity, temporary market-price swings may be less important, but they still matter if the issuer defaults, you need liquidity or you are comparing the opportunity cost of holding the bond.
Inflation risk
Fixed interest and principal buy fewer goods and services when prices rise. This risk affects conventional Treasuries and conventional corporate bonds alike. Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) adjust principal with changes in the Consumer Price Index. Their interest payment is calculated on the adjusted principal, so the cash interest can change over time. TIPS address inflation-indexing risk differently from ordinary fixed-principal bonds; they do not make every investment outcome positive.

Liquidity and pricing risk
Liquidity is the ability to sell promptly at a price close to an observable market value. Treasury markets are generally easier to quote and trade than many individual corporate issues. Corporate liquidity can vary with issue size, trading activity, issuer news and market stress. The SEC specifically warns that corporate-bond pricing is less transparent than stock-market pricing and that finding a buyer can be harder.
Before buying, ask whether your broker shows multiple dealer bids, how the quoted spread is calculated and what minimum denomination applies. A bond that looks attractive on paper can produce a disappointing result if you must accept a wide discount to exit.
Call and reinvestment risk
A callable corporate bond allows the issuer to repay you before the stated maturity, subject to its terms. Companies are more likely to call when market rates have fallen or their credit has improved, precisely when your existing high coupon is valuable. You then have to reinvest the principal, potentially at lower rates. Check the first call date, call price, schedule, notice provisions and whether the quoted yield is to maturity or to the earliest call date.
Tax considerations
Investor.gov states that income from Treasury securities may be exempt from state and local taxes, but not from federal taxes. The tax treatment of corporate-bond interest, discounts, premiums, sales gains or losses and bonds held in different account types can vary. Your state, account, purchase price and personal tax situation matter, so use the security’s tax documents and obtain professional advice for a personalized decision rather than assuming one category is always more tax-efficient.

How to choose between them
- Define the job for the money. Decide whether the bond is for a known future expense, emergency reserves, income, diversification or a long-term allocation. Money needed on a fixed date should not depend on selling a volatile long-maturity bond at an unknown price.
- Set your acceptable credit risk. If a missed payment would derail the goal, start with Treasuries or another government-backed option. If you choose corporates, define a minimum credit quality, limit exposure to any one issuer and recognize that high-yield debt is a risk asset, not a cash substitute.
- Match maturity and duration to the cash date. Compare the bond’s maturity with when you expect to spend the principal. A longer maturity can provide a higher yield but usually brings greater price sensitivity. A maturity ladder—securities maturing in successive years—can reduce the need to sell at an inconvenient time.
- Compare YTM on equivalent terms. Use yield to maturity rather than coupon alone. For callable issues, also examine yield to call and yield to worst. Compare a corporate bond with a Treasury of similar maturity and cash-flow pattern, then decide whether the corporate spread is sufficient compensation for credit, liquidity and call risks.
- Read the contract. Review seniority, secured or unsecured status, covenants, call and put provisions, sinking-fund rules, payment dates, minimum denominations and governing terms. The indenture is where the rights and remedies are defined.
- Plan for an early sale. Ask what would happen if you needed the money next month, during a recession or after a downgrade. Check recent bid and ask information, estimated transaction costs and whether the issue trades regularly. If you cannot tolerate an uncertain sale price, choose a maturity you can realistically hold.
- Account for inflation and taxes. Decide whether nominal payments are adequate for your spending plan. Compare TIPS when preserving purchasing power is more important than receiving a fixed nominal coupon, and compare after-tax rather than pre-tax income when the difference is material.
- Diversify the risks you are taking. Holding several corporate issuers, sectors and maturities can reduce the damage from one company’s problems. Diversification cannot prevent losses from broad rate moves or a widespread credit downturn.
When each type may fit
A known liability with little tolerance for surprises
For a tuition payment, tax bill or down payment with a defined date, a Treasury maturing near that date can reduce issuer-credit uncertainty. You still need to consider the purchase price, inflation and whether the security’s maturity actually matches the cash need.
Seeking more income and accepting company risk
A financially sound corporate bond may offer a higher YTM than a similar-maturity Treasury. That difference is compensation for risks the Treasury does not carry, not free extra return. The trade-off becomes less attractive if the issue is callable, thinly traded, subordinated or dependent on a cyclical business.
Long-term inflation concerns
If your primary concern is the future purchasing power of principal and interest, compare TIPS with nominal Treasuries and corporate bonds. TIPS’ principal adjustment and changing interest amount work differently from a fixed corporate coupon, so evaluate the cash-flow pattern as well as the headline yield.

Building a mixed bond allocation
You do not have to choose one category exclusively. Some investors use Treasuries for a high-quality core and add a measured corporate allocation for income diversification. The appropriate mix depends on the spending goal, time horizon, tax position and ability to withstand price declines and defaults.
Buying Treasury and corporate bonds
Treasury purchase routes
TreasuryDirect says individuals can buy Treasury marketable securities through a TreasuryDirect account or through a bank, broker or dealer. In an auction, the final interest rate is not known when an order is scheduled; it is set at the auction. You can also buy and sell Treasury issues in the secondary market, where the price and yield reflect current conditions.
- Choose the security type, maturity and whether you want a new-issue auction or a secondary-market purchase.
- Review the offering or quote, including coupon, maturity, price, yield and settlement date.
- For an auction order, submit the amount and order type through TreasuryDirect or your financial institution before the stated deadline.
- For a secondary-market order, compare the quoted price and yield with similar Treasury issues and confirm any commission or markup.
- Record the maturity date and payment schedule so the cash flows match your plan.
Corporate purchase checks
Corporate bonds are generally purchased through a broker or dealer. Before submitting an order, obtain the security identifier and read the offering documents or current trade information. Confirm whether the quote is a clean price or includes accrued interest, what minimum denomination applies, and whether the bond is callable. Ask for the yield to maturity and yield to worst, not just the coupon rate.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Calling a Treasury “risk-free.” It has very low conventional credit risk, but it can lose market value before maturity and can lose real purchasing power to inflation.
- Choosing the highest displayed yield. A high yield can signal weak credit, a long maturity, a callable structure or poor liquidity. Compare the full terms.
- Comparing coupons instead of YTMs. Coupon ignores the price you pay and the capital gain or loss implied by maturity value.
- Ignoring call dates. A callable bond may disappear from your portfolio when rates fall, forcing reinvestment at lower yields.
- Assuming a rating is permanent. Monitor changes in the issuer and rating, particularly when a bond is a large part of your fixed-income holdings.
- Buying a maturity you cannot hold. A sale during a rate spike or credit scare can lock in a loss that would not have occurred if you had been able to wait.
- Overlooking taxes and accrued interest. Evaluate after-tax cash flow and understand what portion of the purchase price represents interest earned by the seller.
- Concentrating in one company or sector. A portfolio of many bonds from one vulnerable industry can behave like a single large corporate bet.
A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Issuer and legal entity verified
- Credit rating and recent rating changes reviewed
- Face value, price, coupon and payment frequency recorded
- Yield to maturity calculated or confirmed
- Yield to call and yield to worst checked when applicable
- Maturity aligned with the date funds are needed
- Call provisions, covenants and seniority understood
- Bid-ask spread, trading activity and transaction costs checked
- Inflation effect on the planned cash flow considered
- Federal, state and local tax treatment discussed with a qualified adviser when necessary
- Position size and issuer concentration fit the overall plan
The bottom line on the trade-off
Treasuries exchange potential corporate yield for stronger government credit support and generally easier pricing. Corporate bonds can increase income, but the extra yield is payment for risks: the company may default, the bond may be difficult to sell, the issuer may call it early, and its price may fall with rates or worsening credit conditions. Compare actual securities—not labels—using maturity, YTM, credit quality, cash-flow needs, contract terms, liquidity, inflation exposure and taxes. The better choice is the bond whose risks you can withstand while still meeting the date and purpose for which the money is invested.
