Treasury Bills vs. High-Yield Savings Accounts: How to Choose Where to Keep Cash

Choose based on when you need the money, not just which rate looks higher. A high-yield savings account is usually the better home for cash you may need on an uncertain date because it is designed for deposits and transfers. A Treasury bill can be a better fit for money with a known near-term use date when you can hold it until maturity and the current auction yield, after tax, beats the savings account available to you.

The comparison has three parts: liquidity, return and protection. Treasury bills are short-term U.S. government securities, not bank deposits. A qualifying account at an FDIC-insured bank is a deposit account with insurance limits. Rates, fees, transfer rules and taxes can change the result, so compare the specific bill and account on the same amount and time period.

The short answer

Question Usually points to a savings account Usually points to a Treasury bill
When might you need the cash? The date is uncertain, or you may need a partial withdrawal. The spending date is known and can be matched to a bill maturity.
How do you get the money? Transfer or withdraw under the account’s agreement and any applicable limits. Receive face value at maturity, or sell the security before maturity through a bank, broker or dealer.
What protects the balance? FDIC insurance generally covers up to $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category, subject to the rules. Not FDIC-insured; it is a Treasury security.
How is the return set? The account’s current APY, which can change and may have conditions. The auction price and resulting yield for the term you buy.
What tax treatment applies? Interest is taxable according to your circumstances. Interest is subject to federal tax but exempt from state and local tax.

Neither choice is automatically superior. Keep an operating reserve in an account you can access reliably, then consider bills for a portion of cash whose date is predictable. You can also divide the money between both.

What a Treasury bill is

A Treasury bill, or T-bill, is an electronic short-term security issued by the U.S. Treasury. Regular terms are 4, 6, 8, 13, 17, 26 and 52 weeks. Treasury bills are commonly sold at a discount to face value, although some transactions can be at par. At maturity, the Treasury pays the bill’s face value; the difference between what you paid and the amount received is the interest.

How the purchase and return work

You select a term and submit a purchase through TreasuryDirect, a bank or a broker. For auctioned bills, the price is established through the auction rather than by a fixed savings-account APY. If a bill has a $1,000 face value and you pay less than $1,000, the maturity payment is still $1,000. Your return is the discount, expressed through the auction’s quoted convention.

Treasury explains bill pricing using a discount-rate calculation based on a 360-day year. That means a quoted bill discount rate is not automatically interchangeable with a savings account’s annual percentage yield. For a meaningful comparison, convert each option to the return you would actually earn over the same holding period and amount, then account for taxes and fees.

Terms, minimum and maturity

TreasuryDirect lists a $100 minimum purchase and $100 increments. The maturity date is known when you buy. TreasuryDirect’s FAQ asks, “What are the maturity terms for Treasury bills?” Its answer covers the regular terms listed above.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

TreasuryDirect also states, “The only interest payment to you occurs when your bill matures.” There is no monthly interest deposit to spend or transfer while the bill is outstanding. At maturity, the principal and interest are paid according to the bill’s terms. You need a plan for that date: reinvest, transfer the proceeds to a bank account or use the cash.

Can you get money before maturity?

Yes, but not by making an ordinary savings-account withdrawal. TreasuryDirect says bills may be sold before maturity through a bank, broker or dealer. Selling is a market transaction. The price you receive depends on market conditions, the bill’s remaining term and the intermediary’s process and charges; it is not guaranteed to equal your purchase price or the maturity value.

If you cannot tolerate that uncertainty, do not place money needed on an unknown date into a single bill that may require an early sale. Use an accessible account for that portion or stagger maturities so some cash comes due regularly.

Taxes and protection

Interest from Treasury bills is subject to federal income tax but exempt from state and local income tax. The exemption can improve the after-tax result for a resident of a state or city with income tax, but your federal bracket and other circumstances still matter.

Treasury bills are not FDIC-insured. Their protection comes from being Treasury securities, which is a different legal structure from deposit insurance. Do not describe a T-bill as an FDIC-insured savings product.

What a high-yield savings account is

A high-yield savings account is a deposit account offered by a financial institution. The phrase describes a category, not one standardized product. Before depositing money, confirm that the institution is an FDIC-insured bank and that the particular account is an eligible deposit account.

APY is current and changeable

The account’s annual percentage yield (APY) is the number to compare with your expected savings return. It is not a promise that the rate will remain unchanged. Banks can change a variable savings rate, and an advertised APY may depend on a minimum balance, an introductory period, direct deposit, a membership relationship or other eligibility rules.

Review the current account disclosure for the APY, minimum opening deposit, minimum balance, monthly fee, overdraft or transfer charges and any conditions attached to the headline rate. A lower APY with no fee can produce more cash than a higher APY that you cannot qualify for or that is reduced by charges.

Access and transfer rules are account-specific

Savings accounts are generally intended for accessible cash, but “accessible” does not mean instant or unlimited. Check how you add money, how long an external transfer takes, whether outgoing transfers have limits or fees, whether same-day wires are available and how withdrawals are requested. The account agreement controls; category-level descriptions cannot establish a particular bank’s policy.

FDIC coverage

For qualifying deposits, the FDIC says, “The standard insurance amount is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, for each account ownership category.” Coverage is calculated across your deposits at the same insured bank within each ownership category, not simply per account number.

If your cash exceeds the applicable limit, list every deposit you hold at that bank and identify the ownership category for each. Opening several savings accounts at one bank does not necessarily multiply your insurance. You may need different ownership categories or different insured banks, and you should verify the structure under FDIC rules.

How the products differ

Axis Treasury bills High-yield savings account
What it is An electronically issued short-term U.S. Treasury security. A deposit account at a financial institution; verify that the bank is FDIC-insured and that the account qualifies.
Return mechanics Buy at a discount or par; receive face value at maturity. The purchase-price difference is interest, and the auction sets the price. Earn the account’s current APY, subject to the account’s conditions and future rate changes.
Access Known maturity date; early access requires a sale through a bank, broker or dealer. Transfers and withdrawals follow the specific account agreement and operational timetable.
Insurance or backing Not FDIC-insured; it is a Treasury security. FDIC insurance generally applies up to the statutory limit per depositor, bank and ownership category when requirements are met.
Tax treatment Federal tax applies; state and local tax exemption applies to the interest. Interest is taxable under your own federal, state and local circumstances.
Operational work Select a term, place an auction order and plan around maturity or a possible market sale. Verify APY, fees, minimums, eligibility, transfer access and insurance before funding.

Use a time-horizon test before comparing rates

1. Separate emergency cash from planned cash

Start with money whose timing is unknown: an emergency reserve, a possible medical bill, a repair, a job transition or a tax payment whose final amount is not yet clear. That money has an option value that a rate table does not show. If you may need it tomorrow, prioritize a reliable transfer and withdrawal path over squeezing out an additional yield.

2. Match a bill maturity to a known spending date

For a tuition installment, insurance premium, home project or other payment with a firm date, list the date and work backward. A bill that matures before the payment gives you a defined cash date. Leave a cushion for weekends, bank processing and any transfer time after maturity.

Do not buy a bill that matures after the date you need the money unless you are prepared to sell it early. An early sale can produce a gain or loss and may take longer than an ordinary transfer.

3. Compare the actual offers available to you

Use the current auction result for the exact bill term and the actual savings account’s current APY. The FDIC national average savings deposit rate was 0.39% on March 16, 2026, based on a $2,500 product tier. That statistic is a broad national benchmark, not a quote for a high-yield savings account, so it should not be treated as the rate you will receive from a particular bank.

No single current bill yield or high-yield account APY applies to every reader. Rates move, accounts change their terms and eligibility, and the comparison becomes stale quickly. Record the date and the product terms beside every rate you use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Put both returns on the same basis

For a savings account, estimate the interest on the balance for the period you expect to hold it, using the current APY as an assumption rather than a guarantee. For a bill, use the auction price, face value and the actual number of days to maturity. Treasury’s 360-day discount convention means the auction’s quoted discount rate is not the same thing as an APY.

Then subtract account fees and consider taxes. A simple worksheet can include:

  • Starting amount and expected holding period.
  • Bill purchase price, face value and maturity date.
  • Savings-account APY, minimum balance and recurring fees.
  • Federal tax on either interest stream.
  • State and local tax, including the Treasury bill exemption.
  • Transfer or sale costs and the time required to receive usable cash.

The result is an estimate, not a locked-in forecast. A savings APY can change before the period ends, and a bill’s return is fixed only if you hold it through maturity.

When each option tends to fit

Choose accessible savings for uncertain timing

A savings account is generally the safer operational choice when you cannot predict the withdrawal date, expect to make several withdrawals or need to move only part of the balance. Confirm the account’s transfer speed and limits instead of assuming that every online savings account works the same way.

Consider a bill for a defined horizon

A bill can fit money you do not expect to touch until a known date. The maturity schedule can make the cash plan more deliberate, and the federal-only tax treatment may be valuable in a state or locality with income tax. The trade-off is that you must accept a maturity-based structure or the uncertainty of an early sale.

Use a split or laddered approach

You do not have to choose one product for every dollar. Keep the amount needed for emergencies and near-term surprises in an accessible, insured account. For planned cash, divide the remainder among bills with different maturity dates, such as successive 4-, 8-, 13- or 26-week terms. As each bill matures, use the proceeds or reinvest them. A ladder reduces the chance that all of your planned cash is locked until one date, but it does not remove the need to check rates, taxes and liquidity.

How to buy Treasury bills

  1. List the cash date and amount. Write down when the money is needed, the minimum cushion you want and whether you could tolerate selling before maturity.
  2. Choose a term. Treasury lists 4-, 6-, 8-, 13-, 17-, 26- and 52-week bills. Select a maturity that arrives before the spending date, allowing time for the proceeds to reach your destination account.
  3. Choose an access route. TreasuryDirect, a bank or a broker can be used to buy bills. Compare the route’s account requirements, settlement process and any charges before placing the order.
  4. Meet the minimum. TreasuryDirect lists a $100 minimum and $100 increments. Confirm the minimum and increment for the route you use.
  5. Submit the auction order and save the details. Record the term, face value, purchase price or discount, issue date, maturity date and where the proceeds will go.
  6. Manage maturity. Before the maturity date, decide whether to transfer, spend or reinvest the proceeds. If circumstances change, ask the bank, broker or dealer about an early sale; do not assume the sale price or timing in advance.

How to evaluate a high-yield savings account

  1. Verify insurance first. Confirm the institution is an FDIC-insured bank and that the product is a covered deposit account. If it is not, do not treat the account as FDIC-protected savings.
  2. Capture the current APY and date. Save the disclosure showing the APY when you open or fund the account. Treat the rate as variable unless the agreement explicitly says otherwise.
  3. Check eligibility. Look for direct-deposit, membership, geographic, balance or introductory-rate requirements. Ask what APY applies if you fail a condition.
  4. Read the fee schedule. Include monthly maintenance fees, excess-transfer fees, wire fees, returned-payment fees and any charge that could reduce the interest you expect.
  5. Test the access path. Confirm how to link an external bank, how long deposits and withdrawals take, whether same-day transfers are available and whether limits apply.
  6. Map your insurance exposure. Add all deposits you own at that insured bank within each ownership category. Keep the total within the applicable coverage or obtain professional guidance on a different structure.
  7. Recheck after opening. Monitor the APY, fee schedule and transfer terms. A product that fit today may no longer be the best place for cash after a rate or policy change.

Liquidity details that are easy to miss

A maturity date is not the same as instant spendability

A bill that matures on a particular date gives you a predictable payment, but you may still need to move the proceeds to the account from which you pay a bill. Include that operational step in your calendar. If the payment date is close to the maturity date, use a larger cushion or an accessible account for the payment.

An early sale is not a withdrawal

When you sell a bill before maturity, you are selling a security in the market. The market price can be below the amount you paid, especially if market rates have risen. A bank, broker or dealer may also impose its own process or charge. This is fundamentally different from transferring money out of a savings account under the account agreement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Partial access can favor a split

If you might need $2,000 from a larger reserve but cannot predict when, putting all of the reserve into one bill creates a mismatch. A savings account can hold the flexible portion while separate bills cover dates you can identify. The split should reflect your cash-flow calendar, not a rule that every investor must use a particular percentage.

Tax and insurance checklist

  • Federal tax: Treasury-bill interest is subject to federal tax. Savings-account interest is also generally taxable; apply your own tax situation rather than assuming a universal after-tax rate.
  • State and local tax: Treasury-bill interest is exempt from state and local tax. Savings-account interest does not receive that Treasury-specific exemption.
  • Insurance limit: FDIC coverage is generally up to $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category, subject to the applicable rules.
  • Product identity: A Treasury bill is not an FDIC-insured deposit, and an account advertised as “high yield” is not automatically insured.
  • Record keeping: Keep confirmations, maturity dates, account disclosures and rate dates so you can reconcile interest and review whether the product still fits.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Comparing the FDIC national average with a live bill yield

The 0.39% FDIC figure from March 16, 2026 is a national savings-deposit benchmark based on the $2,500 tier. It is not a high-yield account offer. Correct the comparison by using the actual APY in the account disclosure and a current auction result for the exact bill term.

Treating a bill’s discount rate as an APY

Treasury bill quotes use a discount convention tied to a 360-day year. Correct the comparison by calculating the dollars earned over the same number of days and then considering taxes and costs.

Assuming a savings rate is fixed

A savings APY can change. Correct the assumption by noting the rate’s date, reading the variable-rate disclosure and deciding how often you will review it.

Locking up emergency money

A bill’s maturity may arrive too late, and an early sale may not provide the amount or speed you expect. Correct the mismatch by keeping emergency funds in an account with a tested access path.

Ignoring fees and minimums

A headline APY can be reduced by a monthly fee, an unmet minimum or a transfer charge. Correct it by calculating net dollars for your actual balance and behavior.

Assuming multiple accounts multiply FDIC coverage

Coverage is based on the depositor, insured bank and ownership category. Correct the assumption by adding all relevant deposits at the bank and checking the category rules.

Buying a maturity that misses the payment date

A bill that matures after your payment is due creates a liquidity problem. Correct it by choosing an earlier maturity and allowing transfer time, or by holding the payment amount in accessible savings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A repeatable decision worksheet

  1. Write the amount, the earliest possible need date and the firm spending dates.
  2. Reserve the portion that must remain immediately accessible.
  3. For the remaining amount, list bill terms that mature before each planned use date.
  4. Record the current bill auction result and the savings account’s current APY on the same date.
  5. Calculate expected dollars for the same amount and holding period, using the bill’s actual purchase price and the account’s fees.
  6. Adjust for federal, state and local taxes under your circumstances.
  7. Confirm FDIC coverage for deposits and remember that bills are not FDIC-insured.
  8. Choose a single product, a split or a maturity ladder, then put review dates on your calendar.

Bottom line for choosing a cash home

Use an FDIC-insured savings account when flexibility and an uncertain withdrawal date are the priority. Consider Treasury bills when the cash has a defined horizon, you can wait for maturity and the current after-tax bill return is attractive relative to the specific savings account you can use. Keep the comparison current, treat early sale as a market transaction rather than a withdrawal, and account for insurance limits, fees, taxes and transfer time before committing the money.
