Neither a travel credit card nor a prepaid forex card is universally cheaper or better. Choose by calculating the exact card’s total cost in your destination currencies, then matching the product to your cash-flow and budgeting needs. A credit card is usually more flexible for purchases and lets you pay later, provided you clear the statement in full. A forex card lets you preload a defined amount and may lock the exchange rate when you load it, but loading, reloading, cross-currency, ATM and refund rules can materially change the cost. Keep a backup payment method whichever card you choose.
What is the difference between a travel credit card and a forex card?
Travel credit card
A travel credit card is a revolving credit account. You make a purchase overseas, the card network and issuer convert the transaction into your billing currency, and the amount appears on a later statement. You can defer payment until the due date, but interest can make an apparently low-fee transaction expensive if you carry a balance.

The card may charge a foreign-currency or international-transaction markup in addition to the network exchange rate. The percentage, tax treatment, cash-advance charges, rewards and travel protections are determined by the specific issuer and card variant. “Travel card” is a marketing description, not a standard fee category.
Prepaid forex card
A forex card is funded before use. You load one or more supported foreign currencies, and purchases are authorised against the available prepaid balance. Some issuers describe the exchange rate as locked at the time of loading. That gives you a known load-time rate; it does not prove that the rate was the cheapest available or that every later transaction will avoid fees.

If you spend in a currency that is not loaded, the issuer may perform a cross-currency conversion and charge a fee or spread. Reloads, balance enquiries, ATM withdrawals, inactivity, replacement and refund handling are all product-specific. A prepaid balance also ties up your money before the trip.
How to compare the real cost
Do not compare only the exchange rate displayed in an app or at a terminal. Build an all-in estimate for your expected purchases and cash withdrawals. The relevant components are:
- the network or issuer exchange rate and the date on which it is set;
- foreign-transaction markup and applicable tax on a credit card;
- forex-card loading and reloading charges, including any spread in the quoted rate;
- cross-currency or non-supported-currency fees;
- issuer ATM fees and the local ATM operator’s surcharge;
- credit-card cash-advance fees and interest;
- rewards or benefits you will actually use, after restrictions and caps; and
- refund, replacement and leftover-balance costs.
| Cost or feature | Credit card | Prepaid forex card |
|---|---|---|
| Exchange rate | The network and issuer convert the transaction; settlement timing can affect the final home-currency amount. | The rate may be fixed when you load a balance, subject to the issuer’s rules. |
| Foreign-currency charges | An issuer markup and tax may apply; card variants differ. | Loading, reloading, cross-currency or transaction fees may apply; the schedule differs by card. |
| Overseas cash | A cash advance can involve an issuer fee, markup, the ATM operator’s fee and interest. | An issuer withdrawal fee and the ATM operator’s fee may apply; the withdrawal reduces the prepaid balance. |
| Spending control | Uses a credit line and creates a later bill. | Normally limited to the loaded balance, subject to fees and temporary authorisation holds. |
| Rewards and protections | Depend on the named card’s current benefit guide and terms. | Depend on the named prepaid product; do not assume credit-card rewards or insurance. |
| Currency choice at checkout | A merchant or ATM may offer dynamic currency conversion (DCC) into your home currency. | A DCC prompt can also appear; accepting it can trigger an unfavourable conversion. |
A practical decision method
- List the countries and currencies. Include transit airports and online bookings made before departure. A card that supports your main currency may still be costly for a second currency.
- Estimate purchases and cash separately. Write a realistic amount for hotels, transport, meals, shopping and emergencies, then a separate ATM amount. Cash costs are not interchangeable with purchase costs.
- Obtain the current fee schedules. Check the exact credit-card variant and forex-card program, including taxes, load and reload spreads, supported currencies, ATM charges, cross-currency rules, limits and expiry or inactivity provisions.
- Apply the conversion rules. For the credit card, use the issuer’s stated network-conversion method and add the foreign-transaction markup and tax. For the forex card, use the load-time rate and add every applicable load, reload, cross-currency and withdrawal charge.
- Value benefits conservatively. Count a reward only if you would otherwise buy the qualifying item and can redeem it at its stated value. Treat insurance, lounge access and purchase protection as conditional benefits, not guaranteed savings.
- Check your cash-flow preference. A credit card preserves cash until the statement is due but can produce interest and overspending. A forex card requires money up front and makes the loaded amount visible.
- Choose a backup. Carry a second card from a different account or network and a modest amount of emergency cash. A declined, blocked, lost or offline card should not end the trip.
When a credit card is the better fit
You want flexible payment timing
A credit card can cover a hotel deposit, transport disruption or unexpected medical bill without preloading a large sum. This advantage exists only if you can pay the full statement by the due date. Paying interest changes the calculation and can overwhelm a modest foreign-transaction saving.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYour card has a low documented markup
Some products charge substantially less than an issuer’s standard rate. ICICI Bank’s fee page checked on 13 October 2026 says most of its credit cards have a 3.5% foreign-currency markup plus GST, while named exceptions on that page are 2% for Emeralde Private Metal, Emeralde Private and Emeralde (effective 15 November 2024), 0.99% for the MakeMyTrip ICICI Bank Credit Card and 1.49% for the Times Black ICICI Bank Credit Card. These are issuer-published terms for specified products, not an Indian-market average. Confirm that the same rates and tax treatment still apply before departure.
You will make many card purchases
Using one credit card for hotels, restaurants and transport can simplify records and reduce the need to exchange cash. That convenience should be weighed against the markup, any merchant surcharge and the risk of a large statement. Check whether hotels or car-rental companies place temporary authorisation holds that reduce your available limit.

You have verified a benefit you will use
Rewards, travel insurance, baggage cover, lounge access and purchase protections vary by product. Read the current benefit guide for eligibility, activation, minimum spend, exclusions, claim deadlines and whether the fare had to be paid with that card. Never assume that a product labelled “travel” includes any particular protection.
When a forex card is the better fit
You want a defined trip budget
Loading a planned amount limits ordinary spending to available funds, although fees and pending authorisations can reduce the usable balance. This can be useful for a student, family member or traveller who does not want a credit line available overseas.
You value a known load-time rate
Axis Bank describes its forex card as prepaid and says the exchange rate is locked when funds are loaded. The rate is therefore predictable for that load, but the decision still depends on the quoted spread, load fee, later reloads and whether you spend in the loaded currency. A locked rate can be worse than a later market rate, just as a floating rate can move against you.
Your destination uses a supported currency
Loading the currency you will actually spend can avoid a second conversion. Verify the card’s supported-currency list and the treatment of purchases in an unloaded currency. Do not infer that every multicurrency card supports every currency or that a card with several wallets uses the cheapest conversion automatically.
You can manage the prepaid administration
Before leaving, confirm how to top up, view balances, retrieve a forgotten PIN, freeze a lost card and request a replacement. Ask how refunds are credited, how an unused balance is withdrawn after the trip and whether there are deadlines or charges. A low purchase fee is less valuable if recovering the remaining balance is difficult.

Cash withdrawals need a separate calculation
Credit-card cash advances
An overseas ATM withdrawal on a credit card is generally treated as a cash advance rather than a normal purchase. HSBC India explains that this category can attract a cash-advance fee and interest, and the normal purchase grace period may not apply. ICICI Bank’s fee page checked on 13 October 2026 lists ₹125 plus GST for an overseas ATM cash withdrawal and ₹25 plus GST for an overseas balance enquiry. Those figures apply to the specified issuer terms and can change; check your own card’s schedule.

Add the ATM operator’s surcharge, the issuer’s foreign-currency markup and any tax before deciding that a credit card is convenient for cash. If you need cash, a debit or prepaid product with a clearly lower documented withdrawal cost may be more suitable, but verify its own limits and fees.
Forex-card ATM withdrawals
A forex-card withdrawal reduces the loaded balance and may incur both an issuer fee and the local ATM operator’s fee. ICICI’s prepaid-forex information says ATM charges depend on the currency and selected card. Its fee schedule lists a 0.5% cash-at-POS advance fee; that is a specific schedule item, not a universal ATM price for all forex cards. Some ATMs also impose a fixed local fee that the card issuer cannot waive.
Withdraw fewer, larger amounts only when that is safe and practical: a fixed fee can make several small withdrawals costly, while carrying excessive cash increases loss risk. Check daily limits and keep enough balance for a card authorisation that has not yet settled.
Dynamic currency conversion: choose the local currency
At an overseas terminal or ATM, you may be asked whether to pay in Indian rupees or the local currency. This is DCC: the merchant or ATM provider performs the conversion and displays its own rate and fees. It is separate from your card issuer’s foreign-transaction charge.

Axis Bank’s forex-card terms advise avoiding a currency-change prompt, and HSBC India distinguishes the merchant’s DCC rate from the issuer’s foreign-transaction fee. In most cases, select the local currency so your card network and issuer perform the conversion. Accept INR only after comparing the displayed exchange rate and total fee with the rate your card would use; a familiar currency display is not evidence of a better deal.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.India-specific product examples and limits
The following examples illustrate why product-level checking matters. They are India-focused issuer statements checked on 13 October 2026, not universal rules.
| Issuer information | Published detail | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| ICICI Bank credit cards | Most cards: 3.5% foreign-currency markup plus GST. Named exceptions: 2%, 0.99% and 1.49% as specified above. Overseas ATM withdrawal: ₹125 plus GST; balance enquiry: ₹25 plus GST. | Identify the exact card variant and verify the current fee page before relying on the percentage or rupee charges. |
| ICICI Bank prepaid forex cards | ATM fees depend on currency and selected card. The schedule lists a 0.5% cash-at-POS advance fee. | Do not treat the cash-at-POS line as the price of every ATM withdrawal or every forex card. |
| Axis Bank forex card | Prepaid structure, rate locked at loading, international purchases and ATM use; terms address DCC. | Confirm supported currencies, reload pricing, withdrawal limits and the exact DCC wording for your card. |
| HSBC India credit-card guidance | Separates merchant DCC from issuer foreign-transaction charges and describes ATM withdrawals as cash advances. | Compare the complete cash-advance cost rather than applying the purchase fee to an ATM transaction. |
| IndusInd Bank comparison page | Updated 24 September 2026 and useful for general issuer framing. | Use the product’s own current fee schedule and terms for a precise decision. |
ICICI’s prepaid-forex FAQ also states that its card cannot be used for transactions or withdrawals in India, Nepal or Bhutan. That restriction belongs to that issuer’s product; it should not be generalized to every forex card.
Common failure points and how to avoid them
Comparing a headline rate with a final bill
A favourable-looking exchange rate can be offset by markup, tax, loading spread or an ATM fee. Compare the amount debited after every fee for the same purchase and withdrawal assumptions.
Assuming a locked rate guarantees savings
Locking fixes the rate at loading, not the market’s future direction and not the product’s other charges. Load only after checking the quoted rate, fee and supported-currency rules.

Using a credit card for cash because purchases are fee-free
Purchase and cash-advance pricing are different. Read the cash-advance fee, interest start date, daily interest rate and ATM surcharge before withdrawing.
Accepting DCC automatically
Press the option for the local currency unless you have compared the complete DCC offer. Keep the receipt showing the currency and amount.
Loading too little or too much
An insufficient prepaid balance can cause a declined transaction or force an expensive reload. An excessive balance leaves money to recover and may expose you to refund or withdrawal fees. Stage loads when the fee schedule makes that economical.
Relying on one payment method
A blocked card, damaged chip, offline terminal, lost phone or network outage can prevent access to funds. Notify your issuer of travel dates when required, record emergency contact details securely and carry a separate backup card.
Before departure checklist
- Confirm the card is enabled for international purchases and ATM withdrawals.
- Check expiry date, PIN requirements, contactless limits and whether a one-time passcode will work abroad.
- Download or save the current fee schedule and benefit guide for the exact product.
- Record supported currencies, daily purchase and ATM limits, reload methods and customer-service numbers.
- Verify how hotel, car-rental and other deposit holds affect available credit or prepaid balance.
- Load only the planned forex amount, with a buffer for fees and pending authorisations.
- Carry a backup card from another account or network and modest emergency cash.
- Tell a trusted person how to reach you and where emergency card details are stored; do not write a PIN on the card.
During and after the trip
At the point of sale
Check the amount and currency on the terminal, select the local currency when DCC appears, and retain receipts for disputed or refunded transactions. For a prepaid card, monitor the wallet after each significant purchase so a temporary hold does not create a surprise decline.
If a transaction is declined
- Confirm that the merchant selected the correct local currency and did not retry a reversed authorisation.
- Check available credit or prepaid balance, including pending holds and fees.
- Try the backup card rather than repeatedly submitting the same transaction.
- Contact the issuer through its official international number and ask whether a security block, offline-terminal rule or currency restriction caused the decline.
When you return
Review the credit-card statement against receipts and check the exchange rate, markup, tax, refunds and any cash advances. For a forex card, reconcile the remaining balance, submit outstanding refunds and follow the issuer’s documented process for withdrawal or transfer. Keep statements until deposits and reversals have settled.
Bottom line: choose by use case, not card category
Choose the credit card when you need payment flexibility, can pay the statement in full, and its exact markup and benefits make sense for your spending pattern. Choose the forex card when a prepaid budget and a known load-time rate matter more than delayed payment, and the destination currency and fee schedule are favourable. For many travellers, the most resilient arrangement is a low-cost card for purchases, a separately funded backup and limited emergency cash. The winning product is the one whose complete, current terms produce the lower practical cost without leaving you exposed to a single point of failure.
