Traditional vs. Roth IRA: Which Is Right for You?

By TheFinanceBase Team 9 min read

Short answer: A traditional IRA can reduce taxable income now when you qualify for a deduction, while a Roth IRA accepts after-tax contributions and can deliver tax-free qualified withdrawals later. Neither is automatically superior. Your filing status, modified adjusted gross income (MAGI), workplace-plan coverage, expected retirement tax situation and need for early access determine which fits.

The 2026 IRA contribution limit is shared across both account types: $7,500, plus a $1,100 catch-up contribution for eligible savers age 50 or older. That means a person age 50 or older could contribute $8,600 total to traditional and Roth IRAs combined, subject to compensation and income rules.

Traditional and Roth IRAs solve different tax problems

An IRA is an individual retirement arrangement. The account type determines when contributions and withdrawals are taxed; it does not determine which investments you must buy. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) says, “A traditional IRA is a tax-advantaged personal savings plan where contributions may be tax deductible.” It also says, “A Roth IRA is a tax-advantaged personal savings plan where contributions are not deductible but qualified distributions may be tax free.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those definitions describe the central trade-off:

  • Traditional IRA: A contribution may be deductible today, depending on your income, filing status and workplace-plan coverage. Investment earnings generally are not taxed until money is distributed. Distributions are generally taxable.
  • Roth IRA: Contributions are not deductible. You pay tax before contributing, and qualified distributions can be tax free. Your original contribution basis can generally be withdrawn without tax; earnings need to satisfy the qualified-distribution rules.

The IRS does not approve or endorse IRA investments. You choose the account type and, separately, the provider and investments held inside it.

2026 contribution limits: one shared cap

For tax year 2026, the annual limit for all of your traditional and Roth IRAs combined is $7,500. If you are eligible for the age-50-or-older catch-up, you may contribute an additional $1,100, for a combined maximum of $8,600.

Saver 2026 combined traditional and Roth IRA limit What the limit means
Under age 50 $7,500 The total across every traditional and Roth IRA you own
Age 50 or older and eligible for catch-up $8,600 $7,500 regular limit plus $1,100 catch-up, combined across both account types

The limit is not a promise that every taxpayer can contribute that amount. Contributions are also constrained by compensation and, for Roth IRAs, modified-AGI eligibility rules. Splitting money between both account types does not create a second $7,500 allowance. For example, contributing $4,000 to a traditional IRA leaves $3,500 of the regular 2026 limit for a Roth IRA.

When a Roth IRA contribution is allowed

Roth contributions are subject to income phase-outs based on filing status and modified AGI. A phase-out gradually reduces the allowed contribution; it is not an automatic full contribution for everyone below the upper number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2026 Roth modified-AGI ranges

Filing status 2026 phase-out range
Single or head of household $153,000–$168,000
Married filing jointly $242,000–$252,000
Married filing separately, lived with spouse during the year $0–$10,000

Below the applicable range, a taxpayer may generally make the regular contribution, assuming the compensation and other requirements are met. Within the range, the permitted amount is reduced. At or above the upper threshold, a direct Roth contribution is not permitted for that year under the standard rules. Married taxpayers filing separately have a particularly narrow range when they lived with a spouse during the year, so filing status must be checked rather than inferred from household income alone.

Use the IRS calculation for the actual allowed amount when you are near a threshold. A small change in modified AGI can change the permitted contribution, and an excess contribution can create tax-reporting and correction work.

When a traditional IRA contribution is deductible

You may be able to contribute to a traditional IRA even when the contribution is not deductible. Whether you receive a deduction depends heavily on whether you or your spouse is covered by a workplace retirement plan and on modified AGI.

2026 deduction phase-outs when you are covered by a workplace plan

Filing status and coverage condition 2026 deduction phase-out range
Single or head of household, covered by a workplace plan $81,000–$91,000
Married filing jointly, contributor covered by a workplace plan $129,000–$149,000
Married filing jointly, contributor not covered but spouse is covered $242,000–$252,000

These are deduction phase-outs, not blanket limits on opening a traditional IRA or making a contribution. If neither you nor your spouse is covered by a workplace plan, the IRS says these deduction phase-outs do not apply. If you are covered and your income falls inside a range, the deduction is reduced rather than simply switched from 100% to zero.

Nondeductible traditional contributions require records

A nondeductible traditional contribution is still a traditional IRA contribution, not a Roth contribution in disguise. It does not provide the current deduction, and its tax basis must be tracked. The IRS discusses reporting nondeductible contributions on Form 8606. Keep your contribution records so that the nondeductible basis is not taxed again when distributions occur.

Because workplace-plan coverage and spouse coverage can change from year to year, determine eligibility annually rather than carrying forward an old conclusion.

Withdrawals: the rules that matter most

Traditional IRA distributions

Traditional IRA distributions are generally included in taxable income. Taking money before age 59½ can also trigger an additional 10% tax on the taxable portion unless an exception applies. The rule is not that every early withdrawal is penalized: the taxable amount, the account’s basis and any applicable exception matter.

Traditional IRA owners generally must begin required minimum distributions (RMDs) by April 1 of the year after reaching age 73. Waiting until that April 1 can mean taking two RMDs in the same calendar year, because the regular annual distribution for that year will also be due by December 31. RMD and beneficiary rules can be fact-specific, so use current IRS guidance for the year in question.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Roth IRA distributions

Your Roth contributions are made with money on which tax has already been paid, and returning that contribution basis is not generally subject to tax. Earnings receive the Roth tax benefit only when the distribution is qualified.

The IRS example of a qualified Roth distribution includes both requirements:

  • You have reached age 59½ (or another qualifying condition applies); and
  • The five-tax-year period beginning with the first tax year for which you made a Roth contribution has been satisfied.

A taxable early distribution may face the additional 10% tax unless an exception applies. Do not treat every Roth withdrawal as tax free: ordering rules and the distinction between contributions, conversions and earnings affect the result. Roth IRA owners may generally leave money in their own Roth IRA for life, so the owner is not subject to the traditional IRA lifetime RMD requirement. Beneficiary distribution rules are separate.

How to choose between the accounts

The most useful comparison is not “Which account is best?” but “When do I want to pay tax, and which account can I use under my facts?”

A traditional IRA may fit when a deduction is valuable now

  • You qualify for all or part of the traditional IRA deduction.
  • You expect your retirement marginal tax rate to be lower than your current marginal rate, recognizing that future rates and income are uncertain.
  • You want to reduce current taxable income and can accept taxable distributions later.
  • You are comfortable planning for RMDs beginning generally at age 73.

The deduction is a current benefit, not a guaranteed lifetime tax saving. Future tax rates, other retirement income, investment results and the size and timing of withdrawals determine the eventual outcome.

A Roth IRA may fit when future tax-free flexibility is more valuable

  • Your income permits a direct Roth contribution.
  • You expect your retirement tax rate to be similar to or higher than today’s rate, or you value certainty about qualified withdrawals.
  • You want contributions that can generally be accessed without tax, while accepting that earnings have separate distribution rules.
  • You want to avoid lifetime RMDs from your own Roth IRA.

Paying tax now does not guarantee a better result. A Roth’s advantage depends on the tax rate paid on the contribution, the investment growth and whether the eventual withdrawal is qualified.

Using both can spread tax risk

You can hold both account types, but the combined annual limit still applies. Splitting contributions can create taxable and tax-free sources in retirement, but the right mix depends on your eligibility and plan. Do not contribute to a traditional IRA expecting a deduction if your income and coverage make the contribution nondeductible; decide whether the record-keeping and future tax treatment justify it.

A practical decision process

  1. Confirm compensation. Verify that you have enough eligible compensation for the contribution you intend to make. The annual dollar limit does not override compensation rules.
  2. Identify workplace-plan coverage. Check whether you or your spouse was covered by an employer retirement plan during the tax year. This determines whether the traditional deduction phase-outs may apply.
  3. Determine filing status and modified AGI. Use the status on your federal return and estimate modified AGI, not just salary. Compare it with the 2026 Roth and traditional deduction ranges.
  4. Calculate the allowed amount. If you are in a phase-out range, calculate the reduced amount using current IRS instructions. Do not assume the full limit or assume that a phase-out means no contribution at all.
  5. Compare the tax timing. Weigh a possible deduction now against potentially tax-free qualified Roth distributions later. Model more than one retirement tax-rate scenario rather than relying on a single forecast.
  6. Check your access needs. If you may need money before age 59½, understand which dollars could be accessed and which withdrawals could be taxable or subject to the additional 10% tax.
  7. Set a contribution split and keep records. Track the total deposited across all IRAs and retain Form 8606 records when a traditional contribution is nondeductible.

Opening and managing an IRA

The IRS says an IRA may be established with a bank or other financial institution, life insurance company, mutual fund company or stockbroker. The account provider’s availability does not change the tax rules above.

When comparing providers, examine:

  • Account fees and transaction costs;
  • The investment choices available inside the IRA;
  • Trading, automatic-contribution and customer-service features;
  • Beneficiary-designation procedures; and
  • Account terms, disclosures and tax-reporting support.

The IRS does not approve IRA investments. An IRA can hold different investments depending on the provider, and the account label alone does not make an investment suitable or safe. Review the investment separately from the traditional-versus-Roth decision.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming every traditional contribution is deductible

Workplace-plan coverage and modified AGI can reduce or eliminate the deduction. Check both before claiming it.

Assuming every Roth withdrawal is tax free

Contribution basis and earnings are treated differently. Qualified-distribution requirements, including the five-tax-year rule and age 59½ condition described by the IRS, matter for earnings.

Treating the limits as separate

The $7,500 regular limit and $1,100 catch-up are shared across traditional and Roth IRAs. Depositing the maximum in each account would exceed the annual limit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring the married-filing-separately rule

For a taxpayer who lived with a spouse during the year, the 2026 Roth phase-out is $0–$10,000. A result based on single-filer thresholds can be wrong.

Failing to track nondeductible basis

Report nondeductible traditional contributions as required and retain Form 8606 records. Without accurate basis records, a later distribution may be taxed incorrectly.

Forgetting RMD timing

Traditional IRA owners generally must start by April 1 of the year after turning 73. Put the first deadline and subsequent annual deadlines on a calendar and verify the amount each year.

What this comparison cannot decide for you

The federal rules establish eligibility, deductions and distribution treatment, but they do not predict your future tax rate or cash needs. State income-tax treatment, legislation, investment returns, other retirement accounts, pensions, Social Security and the timing of withdrawals can change the result. The 2026 figures can also change with later cost-of-living adjustments or new law. Recheck current IRS guidance before contributing or taking a distribution, and consider a qualified tax professional for a situation involving high income, married-filing-separately status, nondeductible basis, conversions, inherited accounts or multiple retirement plans.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I contribute to both a traditional IRA and a Roth IRA in 2026?

Yes, if you meet the applicable eligibility rules, but the $7,500 regular limit—or $8,600 including the $1,100 catch-up for an eligible person age 50 or older—is the combined limit across both account types.

What happens if my income is inside the Roth IRA phase-out range?

Your permitted direct Roth contribution is reduced using the IRS calculation. It is not automatically the full annual limit, and it is not automatically zero until your modified AGI reaches the top of the applicable range.

Does a traditional IRA deduction phase-out prevent me from opening or funding the account?

No. The cited phase-outs govern deductibility under particular workplace-plan and filing-status conditions. A contribution may still be possible without a deduction, but you must handle the tax reporting and basis rules.

Are Roth IRA owners required to take RMDs during their lifetimes?

The IRS says owners may leave amounts in their own Roth IRA as long as they live. Beneficiary distribution rules are separate.
